This report represents a joint effort by the OSMS, CDMG and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The report summarizes all strong-motion accelerograph records recovered from the August 6, 1979 Coyote Lake earthquake. The majority of accelerograms were recorded at stations operated by the OSMS-CDMG and USGS; the latter organization operates a network of instruments that belong to various federal agencies. Documentation of strong-motion data for the Coyote Lake earthquake best serves the scientific community if presented as a single data set.
\nReasonable precautions have been taken to ensure the accuracy of the material presented; however, the preliminary nature of the report makes it subject to change upon further verification. Measurements and scalings of the accelerograms are not recommended for use in detailed studies because of possible photo copy distortions during reproduction. A report on the processed data from close-in stations is in preparation and will be issued in the near future.

The inflow and outflow discharges of the probable maximum flood were computed to be 23,600 and 23,100 cubic feet per second, respectively, and of the standard project flood, 9,400 and 8,800 cubic feet per second, respectively. A rating curve computed for the dam spillway indicates that water-surface elevations produced at the dam by runoff from both the standard project flood and the maximum probable flood would be above the top of the spillway abutments. The 10- and 100-year peak discharges at the Butternut Creek gaging station were computed by the HEC-1 program of the Corps of Engineers to be 2 ,160 and 3,450 cubic feet, respectively, as compared to 1,680 and 2,810 cubic feet per second computed by a log-Pearson type III analysis of the station data. The aggregate thickness of salt-bearing rocks, from the base of the lowest salt to the top of the highest salt, ranges from about 300 feet in the northern part of the area to more than 450 feet in the southern part. The aggregate thickness of salt, exclusive of the intervening rocks, also increases southward, from about 100 feet to more than 200 feet. Estimates of end-of-month storage in Dillon Reservoir, assuming the reservoir was in place and 131,000 acre-feet of water were diverted from the reservoir each year, were reconstructed by mass balance for the 1931-77 water years. Based on the analysis, the annual maximum end-of-month drawdown below the elevation at full storage would have averaged 54 feet. The maximum end-of-month drawdown below the elevation at full storage would have been 171 feet. The mean-annual discharge-weighted dissolved-solids concentrations in the Colorado River near Glenwood Springs and Cameo, Colo., and Cisco, Utah, for the 1942-77 water years, were computed assuming an annual diversion of 131,000 acre-feet of water from Dillon Reservoir. The average increases in the dissolved-solids concentrations with the 131 ,000-acre-foot diversion were 15 to 16 milligrams per liter at the three sites. Rate of sediment accumulation in a pond in the basin that was surface mined for coal and left unrehabilitated was over 11 times greater than in a pond in the adjacent unmined basin. The additional sediment came primarily from barren high walls and roughly graded spoils. No sediment was yielded from ungraded spoil rows that drained to closed depressions. Most sediment yielded from the two basins was trapped in the two ponds. The chemical composition of materials from slopes, channels, and pond bottoms of the two basins were similar; however, concentrations of dissolved and suspended matter in waters of the two ponds were different. Low concentrations of dissolved chemical constituents in the pond water below the unmined basin suggest surface runoff as the source. Higher concentrations of dissolved chemical constituents , notably calcium, magnesium, and sulfate, in pond water below the mined area suggest ground-water discharge as the source. Sediment yield was a better indicator of the effects of disturbance on mined areas than chemical quality of water. The dominant hydrologic factor influencing the distribution of bottomland tree species is flooding. Individual tree species are distributed as a function of frequency and duration of flooding. In the lower White and Ouachita River basins, the flood plains consist of a series of terraces, progressively higher terraces having less frequent flooding and less duration of flooding, and a significantly different composition of forest tree species. The sites studied can be divided into four basic groups and several subgroups on the basis of flood characteristics. On Group I (water hickory-overcup oak) sites, flooded near annually 32 to 40 percent of the time, the dominant species are water hickory and overcup oak. On Group II (nuttall oak) sites, flooded near annually 10 to 21 percent of the time, a more varied flora exists including nuttall oak, willow oak, sweetgum, southern hackberry, and American elm. The third group (Group III or shagbark hickory-southern red oak) of sites is flooded at intervals from 2 to 12 years. This group includes southern red oak, shagbark hickory, and black gum. The presence of blackjack oak in addition to Group III species marks Group IV (not flooded in historic time). Changes in land use associated with urbanization have increased flood-peak discharges in northeastern Illinois by factors up to 3.2.
Techniques are presented for estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods in the urban environment of northeastern Illinois, and for estimating probable changes in flood characteristics that may be expected to accompany progressive urbanization. Suggestions also are offered for estimating the effects of urbanization on flood characteristics in areas other than northeastern Illinois.
Three variables, drainage area, channel slope, and percent imperviousness (an urbanization factor), are used to estimate flood magnitudes for frequencies ranging from 2 to 500 years. Multiple regression analyses were used to relate flood-discharge data to the above watershed characteristics for 103 gaged watersheds. These watersheds ranged in drainage area from 0.07 to 630 square miles, in channel slope from 1.1 to 115 feet per mile, and in imperviousness from 1 to 39 percent.

The model preserves the mean, variance, and cross correlations of the observed station data. In addition, it has a desirable blend of both high and low frequency characteristics and therefore is capable of preserving the Hurst coefficient, h. The generated annual flows are disaggregated into monthly sequences using a modification of the Valencia-Schaake model. The low-flow frequency and flow duration characteristics of the generated monthly flows, with length equal to the historical data, compare favorably with the historical data. Once the models were verified, 100-year sequences were generated and analyzed for their low flow characteristics. One-, three- and six- month low-flow frequencies at recurrence intervals greater than 10 years are generally found to be lower than flow computed from the historical flows. Daily streamflow records obtained at this site are published in the annual series of Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers beginning in 1925. In October 1960, the Geological Survey resumed collection of hydrologic data in the Mountain Creek watershed by establishing three stream-gaging stations and one reservoir-content station. The data-collection sites are on Mountain Creek near Cedar Hill, Walnut Creek near Mansfield, Mountain Creek at Grand Prairie, and Mountain Creek Lake near Grand Prairie (fig. 1). In October 1970, the Geological Survey assumed operation of the stage station Mountain Creek near Duncanville (fig. 1).
Water-quality data for the 1977 water year for sites in the study area are presented in downstream order along with the streamflow data in the section \"Compilation of data.\" A complete tabulation of data, including laboratory analyses, for the 1977 water year for the Trinity River basin is given in Water resources data for Texas, TX-77-1, 1977.
The purpose of this report is to compile the records of streamflow and reservoir content for the year into a form which facilitates their use in detailed analyses of the Mountain Creek hydrologic system. This report contains basic-hydrologic data for the 1977 water year (Oct. 1, 1976-Sept. 30, 1977). Assistance in the form of funds or services was provided by the Texas Department of Water Resources and the Dallas Power and Light Company.

The water-level rise in these trenches does not appear to be related to ground-water inflow, but rather to increased infiltration of precipitation through the clay-rich till cover over the trenches. The increase in infiltration is attributed to inflow through cracks caused by dessication and (or) settling of the buried refuse. A closed pipe was driven through the buried waste, and a removable point withdrawn. The hole was then advanced by alternately pushing a coring device, then driving an inner casing to the depth reached by the coring device and cleaning out cuttings from within the casing. The effectiveness of the technique was limited by inability to predict the location of impenetrable objects within the waste in some parts of the burial ground and difficulty in detecting when the end of the pipe first penetrated undisturbed material beneath the trench floor. Geophysical logs of the completed hole were used to help determine the trench-floor depth.
