The Bodaway Mesa area includes about 800 square miles in north-central Arizona, and most of the area is in the Navajo Indian Reservation. Ground-water development has been slight; in 1977 the estimated ground-water withdrawal was less than 5 acre-feet. The Chinle Formation is the principal aquifer tapped by wells, and in places the Moenkopi Formation and the Redwall and Muav Limestones yield water to wells and springs. Water levels in the Chinle Formation are 15 to 200 feet below the land surface. The water from one well completed in the Petrified Forest Member of the Chinle Formation contained 1,210 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids; the dissolved-solids concentrations from two wells in the Shinarump Member of the Chinle were 1,000 and 1,110 milligrams per liter. Three wells penetrate the Moenkopi Formation, but only one yields water. One well obtains its water from the Redwall Limestone, and the water level is 2,200 feet below the land surface. About 60 cubic feet per second of water is discharged by springs that issue from the Redwall and Muav Limestones along the east wall of the canyon of the Little Colorado River. Information on the map includes depth to water, altitude of the water level, specific conductance, and fluoride concentrations. Scale 1:125,000.

The Gila River drainage from Painted Rock Dam to Texas Hill area includes about 3,000 square miles in southwestern Arizona. Ground-water development has taken place only in the northern part of the area, and only this part is included in the report. The southwestward-flowing Gila River drains the 1 ,900-square-mile northern part of the area. The main water-bearing unit is the valley-fill deposits. Since 1967, the estimated ground-water pumpage has exceeded 100,000 acre-feet per year, and in 1977 the ground-water pumpage was 210,000 acre-feet; the ground water is used mainly for irrigation. The ground-water withdrawals have resulted in general water-level declines in most of the area. Information shown on the maps includes change in water level, 1965-78 and 1973-78, and irrigated area; depth to water, altitude of the water level, and well depth; and specific conductance and fluoride concentration in the water. Hydrographs of the water level in selected wells and a table of historical pumpage also are included. Scale 1:250 ,000.

The main water-bearing unit is the alluvium along the Gila River and its tributaries and in the valleys that separate the mountains. Most of the ground-water development has taken place in the Wellton-Mohawk area in the northern part of the Gila River drainage from Texas Hill to Dome area. The use of imported Colorado River water for irrigation caused the water levels to rise, and in the early 1970 's the water levels were within 6 feet of the land surface in most of the area. Since 1961, a network of about 70 wells has been pumping about 200,000 acre-feet of ground water annually for drainage of the waterlogged land in the area. The ground water in the Wellton-Mohawk area is of unsuitable chemical quality for most uses. Information shown on the maps includes depth to water , well depth, altitude of the water level, irrigated area, and specific conductance and Fluoride concentration in the water, A table of historical pumpage also is included. The Elizabethtown area of north-central Kentucky contains aquifers and streams that yield adequate quantities of water of suitable quality for most individual domestic needs as well as for industrial, public supply, and irrigation uses.

The area consists of typical karst with numerous sinkholes and subsurface drainage. The bedrock structure controls, in part, the availability of ground water. Potentiometric and structure contours suggest that wells, springs, and streams on anticlines are more likely to have smaller yields or flows and possibly be more affected by droughts, than those on synclines.

Water wells, tapping the St. Louis Limestone of Late Mississippian age, yield from less than 1 to about 540 gallons per minute. The average well is 93 feet deep and has a static water level of 40 feet. Well depths range from 43 to 335 feet. The low average discharges of springs during 7 consecutive days for a 10-year period range from 0.4 to 13.4 cubic feet per second.

Stream discharges average from less than 0.002 cubic feet per second in the headlands, to 458 cubic feet per second for Nolin River at White Mills, just beyond the area of study. Low average discharges of streams during 7 consecutive days for a 10-year interval range from zero to 34 cubic feet per second. Along many intervals of Middle Creek and North Fork Nolin River, during periods of low flow, there may be no surface flow. Such losing streams are common in karstland which lacks surface drainage.

The quality of water from wells and springs is typical of a limestone terrane. It is chiefly a calcium bicarbonate or calcium sulfate type of water. The water is moderately hard to very hard. The water quality of streams at baseflow is similar to that of the ground water. During periods of precipitation, water in streams is diluted by the overland runoff and contains fewer dissolved solids.

Water in the basal gypsum-hearing part of the St. Louis Limestone is likely to have sulfate content in excess of 250 milligrams per liter. The water from this zone may also contain excessive dissolved solids. Water from rocks that have shale beds below the St. Louis Limestone is likely to be saline.

This gazetteer is a catalog of lakes formed by surface coal mining in southwestern Indiana that are 0.5 acre or larger and in nonactive mine areas. Approximately 1,000 of the lakes are listed by 7.5-minute quadrangle topographic-map name, lake-identification number, latitude and longitude, and county. Other data given are shape of lake, maximum length, mean width, length and development of shoreline, surface area, orientation, presence of a stream inlet or outlet, and geologic data (geologic formation of area surrounding the lake and the mined coal-bed member). Field data (sampling date, pH, specific conductance, apparent color of lake, and general vegetation along the shoreline) were collected for 287 of the lakes.

Two-hundred eighty-seven lakes were sampled once for pH and specific conductance. Vegetation along the shoreline and apparent color of each lake were identified at the same time. Although these data are not sufficient to quantify the water quality of the lakes, they do illustrate the variability of these characteristics. The pH of the 287 lakes ranged from 2.5 to 10.0; however, the pH of 80 percent of them ranged from 6 to 9. Specific conductance ranged from 99 to 3,800 micromhos per centimeter at 25° Celsius. Specific conductance for approximately 70 percent of the lakes in the Staunton and Brazil Formations was less than 500 micromhos per centimeter at 25° Celsius, but for approximately 65 percent in the Dugger and Petersburg Formations it was greater than 1,000 micromhos per centimeter at 25° Celsius. The apparent colors of the lakes observed were varying shades of aqua, blue, brown, lime green, red, and green. Eighty percent of the lakes sampled were green.

Lake sizes ranged from a chosen minimum of 0.5 acre to a maximum of 344 acres. Maximum length ranged from 0.1 to 2 miles, and the mean width was generally less than 0.8 mile.
