In the northern Adobe Range, where the entire Permian sequence is approximately correlative with the Phosphoria Formation, it is 200 m thick and averages 1.7 percent P2O5 . In the southern Adobe Range, the Permian sequence is more than 1,700 m thick, and the upper half which is roughly correlative with the Phosphoria Formation averages more than 2 percent P2O5. Some thin beds in rocks of Permian age contain more than 20 percent P2O5. \r\n\r\nPhosphatic rocks of the Adobe Range were deposited in shallow water among islands in the western part of the epicontinental Phosphoria sea. The continental margin and the open ocean lay far to the west. At the same time, the Phosphoria Formation was being deposited in the eastern and central parts of the Phosphoria sea. Theories based on the work of Kasakov done in 1937 relating phosphate deposition directly to sites of upwelling oceanic waters are questioned. The water-resources data and the results of the investigations are published or released by either the U.S. Geological Survey or by cooperating agen-cies. This report describes the water-resources investigations in Colorado for the 1979 fiscal year (October 1, 1978, to September 30, 1979).</p><p>The U.S. Geological Survey's investigations of the water resources of Colo-rado are under the direction of James F. Blakey, District Chief. The Colorado District office is located in Building 53, Denver Federal Center, Lakewood, Colo. (fig. 1). Strips of plains material </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">bound the cratered terrain in both the northern and eastern parts of the quadrangle</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">. There is approximately </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">3 km of relief</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\"> across the quadrangle, with the highest </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">elevations</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\"> in the eastern part. </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">Plains</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\"> materials </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">of this region are situated along the lower slopes of the </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">Tharsis</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\"> Montes, which con</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">tinue to rise in elevation eastward in</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">t</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">o the adjacent </span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW205397021 BCX8\">Pheo</span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW205397021 BCX8\">nicis</span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">Lacus</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\"> and </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">Tharsis</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\"> quadrangle. </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\">There is little correlation between terrain types and elevation within the </span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW205397021 BCX8\">Mamnonia</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205397021 BCX8\"> quadrangle.
