S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, in Kansas is to investigate the occurrence, quantity, quality, distribution, and movement of surface and ground water throughout the State. Primary activities include the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of hydrologic data, evaluation of water demands, and water-resources research. Four types of hydrologic investigations are conducted: (1) data-collection activities, (2) statewide or regbnal investigations, (3) local or areal investigations, and (4) research. These studies are funded through joint-funding agreements with State and local agencies, transfer of funds from other Federal agencies, and direct Federal funds. </p><p>Forty water-related studies were ongoing during fiscal years 1989 through 1991 in Kansas. This report describes for each study the problem that initiated the study, the objectives of the study, the approach designed to achieve the objectives, and significant milestones and publications that resulted during fiscal years 1989-91. Information on more than 1,800 data-collection stations in Kansas is presented in maps and tables. A list of 81 reports and abstracts published or released by the U.S. Geological Survey, its cooperators, or technical and scientific organizations during calendar years 1989, 1990, and 1991 is Field studies by the authors began as early as 1973 in the quadrangles, but systematic mapping was not begun until 1988. Systematic mapping remains to be completed for much of the southwest part of the map area and the vicinity of southeastern Cold Bay. Previous geologic mapping in the region, which constitutes an invaluable data base for our studies, was conducted by Kennedy and Waldron (1955). Waldron (1961). Burk (1965). McLean and others (1978), and DuBois and others, 1989.</p><p>Most of the new mapping for this map was done by helicopter-supported foot-traverses and with helicopter spot landings. Coverage of areas between surface observations was made using helicopter overflights and interpretation of vertical aerial photography and Landsat imagery. Field investigations were conducted from bases at Cold Bay (1990), King Cove (1988), and False Pass (1991). In addition, some field work in 1984 was also conducted using the U.S. Geological Survey Research Vessel Don J. Measured tracer-response curves produced from the injection of a known quantity of soluble tracer can be used in conjunction with the superposition principle to simulate potential waste buildup in streams, lakes, and estuaries. Such information is particularly valuable to environmental and water-resource planners in determining the effects of proposed waste discharges.</p><p>The theory, techniques, analysis, and presentation of results of tracer-waste simulation tests in rivers, lakes, and estuaries are described.
