The advantages are: (1) these isotopes do not occur in terrestrial rocks, (2) they have negligible decay losses because of their long half lives, (3) they cause minimal recoil contamination to surface-barrier detectors, (4) they allow for simultaneous determination of the concentration and isotopic composition of uranium and thorium in a variety of sample types, and (5) they allow for simple and constant corrections for spectral inferences, 0.5% of the 238U activity is subtracted for the contribution of 235U in the 236U peak and 1% of the 229Th activity is subtracted from the 230Th activity. Disadvantages in using 236U and 229Th are: (1) individual separates of uranium and thorium must be prepared as very thin sources for alpha spectrometry, (2) good resolution in the spectrometer system is required for thorium isotopic measurements where measurement times may extend to 300 h, and (3) separate calibrations of the 236U and 229Th spike solution with both uranium and thorium standards are required. The use of these tracers in applications of uranium-series disequilibrium studies has simplified the measurements required for the determination of the isotopic composition of uranium and thorium because of the minimal corrections needed for alpha spectral interferences. ?? 1984.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Nuclear Instruments and Methods In Physics Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0167-5087(84)90711-7","issn":"01675087","usgsCitation":"Rosholt, J., 1984, Radioisotope dilution analyses of geological samples using 236U and 229Th: Nuclear Instruments and Methods In Physics Research, v. 223, no. 2-3, p. 572-576, https://doi.org/10.1016/0167-5087(84)90711-7.","startPage":"572","endPage":"576","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219661,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":268836,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0167-5087(84)90711-7"}],"volume":"223","issue":"2-3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a93fde4b0c8380cd81135","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rosholt, J.N.","contributorId":37749,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rosholt","given":"J.N.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357577,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

We found that the proportion of juvenile Dunlins (Calidris alpina) in the kills of a Merlin (Falco columbarius) one winter at Bolinas Lagoon, California was greater than the proportion of juveniles in the lagoon's winter population. The Antarctic calcites (?? 18O(SMOW) = +9.14 to +11.82%0) were deposited from waters enriched in 16O whose isotopic composition was consistent with that of meteoric precipitation at low temperature and high latitude. The carbon of the calcite cleats (?? 13C(PDB) = -15.6 to -16.9%0) was derived in part from the coal (?? 13C(PDB) = -23.5 to -26.7%0) as carbon dioxide and by oxidation of methane or other hydrocarbon gases. The strontium ( 87Sr 86Sr = 0.71318-0.72392) originated primarily from altered feldspar grains in the sandstones of the Beacon Supergroup. Calcite cleats in the Kittaning No. 6 coal seam of Ohio (?? 18O(SMOW) = +26.04 to +27.79%0) were deposited from waters that had previously exchanged oxygen, possibly with marine carbonate at depth. The carbon (?? 13C(PDB) = 0.9 to +2.4%0) is enriched in 13C even though that cleats were deposited in coal that is highly enriched in 12C and apparently originated from marine carbonates. Strontium in the cleats ( Sr 87 0.71182-0.71260) is not of marine origin but contains varying amounts of radiogenic 87Sr presumably derived from detrital Rb-bearing minerals in the adjacent sedimentary rocks. The results of this study suggest that calcite cleats in coal of southern Victoria Land, Antarctica, were deposited after the start of glaciation in Cenozoic time and that those in Ohio precipitated from formation waters derived from the underlying marine carbonate rocks, probably in the recent geologic past. ?? 1984.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Chemical Geology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0009-2541(84)90174-8","issn":"00092541","usgsCitation":"Faure, G., and Botoman, G., 1984, Origin of epigenetic calcite in coal from Antarctica and Ohio based on isotope compositions of oxygen, carbon and strontium: Chemical Geology, v. 46, no. 4, p. 313-324, https://doi.org/10.1016/0009-2541(84)90174-8.","startPage":"313","endPage":"324","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":266107,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0009-2541(84)90174-8"},{"id":220113,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"46","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a70d2e4b0c8380cd7628a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Faure, G.","contributorId":92422,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Faure","given":"G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":366735,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Botoman, G.","contributorId":101006,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Botoman","given":"G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":366736,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We have studied the oxygen and sulphur isotope geochemistry of sulphides, sulphur, sulphate and water in the field and in experiments to identify sources of oxygen and reaction mechanisms of sulphate formation. Here we report that the oxygen isotope composition of sulphate in acid mine drainage shows a large variation due to differing proportions of atmospheric- and water-derived oxygen from both chemical and bacterially-mediated oxidation. 18O-enrichment of sulphate results from pyrite oxidation facilitated by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in aerated environments. These moths oviposit in the ovary of the plants and the larvae are entirely dependent upon Yucca seeds for food. The extent and distribution of larval seed predation was examined in nine Yucca species in the southwestern United States. The proportion of seeds destroyed by the yucca moth ranged from 3 % in Y. schidigera from coastal southern California to 45 % in one population of Y. angustissima from southern Utah. This sampling was done in 1979 at which time the Y. schidigera population averaged 0.6 larvae per fruit and the population of Y. angustissima averaged 9.3 larvae per fruit. A second sampling of these populations in 1982 averaged 0.5 for Y. schidigera and 5.6 for Y. angustissima. Several species showed significant differences between populations in the number of larvae per fruit. Contrary to expectation, based on the dogma that fruit production is dependent upon Tegeticula pollination (which is always followed by oviposition), a large number of fruits were found without larvae. The proportion varied greatly between populations but was as high as two thirds of all fruits in some populations. Observations suggested that these flowers had been pollinated by Tegeticula and the moths had oviposited in them but that the eggs failed to hatch.
","language":"English","publisher":"University of Notre Dame","doi":"10.2307/2425472","usgsCitation":"Keeley, J.E., Keeley, S.C., Swift, C.C., and Lee, J., 1984, Seed predation due to the yucca moth symbiosis: American Midland Naturalist, v. 112, p. 187-191, https://doi.org/10.2307/2425472.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"187","endPage":"191","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129829,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"112","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fba24","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keeley, Jon E. 0000-0002-4564-6521 jon_keeley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4564-6521","contributorId":1268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keeley","given":"Jon","email":"jon_keeley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":315974,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Keeley, Sterling C.","contributorId":112968,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keeley","given":"Sterling","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315972,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Swift, C. The mean error for rate of spread was +0.03 foot per minute for the NFDRS and -0.15 foot for the FBPS. For flame length the mean error was -0.38 foot for both systems. Regressions provided factors for correcting predicted values. Burning prescriptions based on the models have been adjusted for the variation in their predictive capability.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.1093/jof/82.8.479","usgsCitation":"van Wagtendonk, J., and Botti, S., 1984, Modeling behavior of prescribed fires in Yosemite National Park: Journal of Forestry, v. 82, no. 8, p. 479-484, https://doi.org/10.1093/jof/82.8.479.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"479","endPage":"484","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129852,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"82","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db6999bb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"van Wagtendonk, J.
