LEE over the entire Bering Sea region. 75 successful sonobuoy refraction and wide angle reflection stations were recorded over the shelf areas of Navarin Basin, St. George Basin and Umnak Plateau, and the deep ocean areas of Bowers Basin and the Aleutian Basin. Of these, 18 were in shallow water depths (less than 200 meters), 21 were in intermediate depths (200 to 3000 meters) and 36 were in deep water (greater than 3000 meters). The shortest of the sonobuoy lines is 3 nautical miles (5.6 km) while the longest is almost 42 n.m. (78 km). The average distance 1s 17 n.m. (21 km). In the Hawaiian Islands, the application of this technique is providing a chronology of the geologic history that will serve as a framework for studies of volcanologic and related hazards, sea-level changes, paleomagnetism, and paleobotany. Many <sup>14</sup>C dates have also been determined for archaeological studies on the Islands.</p><p>During the last 3 years, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) radiocarbon laboratory at Reston, VA, has determined more than 100 <sup>14</sup>C dates from carbonized roots and other plant material collected from beneath prehistoric lava flows and ash deposits from Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes. Prior to 1976, only 10 flows from these volcanoes had been dated by radiocarbon methods. Collection of dateable material has been facilitated by an improved understanding of the conditions of charcoal formation and preservation beneath basaltic lavas (Lockwood and Lipman, 1979).</p><p>The purpose of this report is to gather all published Hawaiian radiocarbon dates, except geochemical dates, together in order to spare those working on the geologic and archaeologic history of the Islands the time and energy necessary to recover these dates from their various sources, as well as to prevent duplication of effort in the field and laboratory. A few unpublished dates from the Reston laboratory are also included. The listing and bibliography are as complete as possible. The U.S. Geological Survey library was used as the primary source of information.</p><p>The dates are divided by island, and, within island groups, by category of interest. Within each category, dates are listed chronologically from youngest to oldest. The letter before the lab number tells what lab ran the sample. Volcanic rocks in the Mineral Mountain and Teapot Mountain quadrangles mark the site of a major northwest-trending structural hingeline. This hingeline divides an older Precambrian X terrane on the west from intensely deformed sequences of rock as young as Pennsylvanian on the east, suggesting increased westerly uplift. The volcanic rocks consist of a pile of complexly interlayered rhyolite, andesite, dacite, flows and intrusive rocks, water-laid tuffs, and very minor olivine basalt. Although the rocks erupted from several different vents, time relations, space relations, and chemistry each give strong evidence of a single source for all the rocks. Available data (by the K-Ar dating method) on hornblende and biotite separates from the volcanic rocks range from 14 to 19 m.y. and establish the pre-middle Miocene age of major dislocations along the structural hingeline. Most of the volcanic rocks contain glass, either at the base of the flows or as an envelope around the intrusive phases. One of the intrusive rhyolites, however, seems to represent one of the final eruptions. Intense vesiculation of the intrusive rhyolite suggests a large content of volatiles at the time of its eruption. Mineralization is associated with the more silicic of these middle Miocene volcanic rocks; specifically, extensive fissure quartz veins contain locally significant amounts of silver, lead, and zinc and minor amounts of gold. Many of the most productive deposits are hosted by the volcanic rocks, although others occur in the Precambrian rocks. Durbin (U.S. </span><span>Geological Survey) for use in ground-water investigations in southern </span><span>California. </span></p><p><span>The documentation assumes that the reader is familiar with the physics of ground-water flow, numerical methods of solving partial-differential equations, and the FORTRAN IV computer language. Upper Cretaceous strata on Sanak Island are strongly deformed and show structural features of broken formations similar to those observed in the Franciscan assemblage of California. Rocks exposed on Sanak Island do not crop out on the peninsular mainland or on Unimak Island, and probably make up the acoustic and economic basement of nearby Sanak basin. Tertiary sedimentary rocks on the outermost part of the Alaska Peninsula consist of Oligocene, Miocene, and lower Pliocene volcaniclastic sandstone, siltstone, and conglomerate deposited in nonmarine and very shallow marine environments. Interbedded airfall and ash-flow tuff deposits indicate active volcanism during Oligocene time. Locally, Oligocene strata are intruded by quartz diorite plutons of probable Miocene age. \r\n\r\nReservoir properties of Mesozoic and Tertiary rocks are generally poor due to alteration of chemically unstable volcanic rock fragments. Igneous intrusions have further reduced porosity and permeability by silicification of sandstone. Organic-rich source rocks for petroleum generation are not abundant in Neogene strata. Upper Jurassic rocks in the Black Hills area have total organic carbon contents of less than 0.5 percent. \r\n\r\nDeep sediment-filled basins on the Shumagin Shelf probably contain more source rocks than onshore correlatives, but reservoir quality is not likely to be better than in onshore outcrops. Much of the water may move through confining layers to other aquifers or to the land surface rather than discharging directly to the streams.</p><p>Transmissivities of the sandstones range from 50 to 300 squared feet per day. Lowest dissolved-solids concentrations occur in or near outcrops of the sandstones and :Increase in the direction of ground-water flow. The moat portions of the caldera complex were subsequently filled with tuffaceous sediments. Late in the caldera development near-surface intrusives and domes were emplaced along the margins of the complex and mineralized with uranium. Seven large hydrothermal systems developed at this time and formed large areas of alteration within the caldera-fill volcanics and sediments. An equal amount leaves the lake, and of this, 380 acre-feet is by surface runoff, 8 acre-feet is by groundwater seepage, and 140 acre-feet is by evaporation. Based on these amounts of inflow and outflow, the theoretical water-renewal time of the lake is calculated to be 2.6 years. The annual contributions of nitrogen and phosphorus to the lake from precipitation, natural ground water, and septic-tank leachate are about 920 kilograms nitrogen and 38 kilograms phosphorus. Nitrogen and phosphorus contributions from other sources were not assessed but could be significant. The holes are within the area of the short-term lease application. C-27931 held by Wyoming Fuels of Lakewood, Colorado.</p><p>Drill-hole GNW1 is located in T. 3 N., R. 78 W., sec. 10, SIANE14, in the Gould NW quadrangle, and drill-hole JMM2 is located in T. 8 N., R. 78 W., sec. 10, SW<sup>1</sup>/<sub>2</sub>NE<sup>1</sup>/<sub>4</sub>, in the Johnny Moore Mountain quadrangle (fig. 1). The area is part of the McCallum Known Recoverable Coal Resource Area (KRCRA).</p><p>The purpose of the drilling was to gather additional data concerning depth, thickness, and extent of the Sudduth coal bed in order to calculate a reserve base for the area of the lease application. USGS personnel chose the drill-hole sites, conducted the geophysical logging, and recorded the descriptions of cuttings at 5-foot intervals.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological These faults are the Hosgri fault, the Offshore Lompoc fault, and smaller unnamed faults. Faults trending offshore from the adjacent shoreline such as the Pezzoni, Lions Head, Honda, and Pacifico faults, do not show post-Wisconsin activity. \r\n\r\nThe Hosgri fault trends directly toward the coastline between Purisima Point and Point Arguello where it appears to merge with folds and smaller faults in the western Transverse Ranges. This marine sequence consists of 2,800 meters of predominantly thin-bedded siltstone and sandstone that encloses six distinctive members. The named members include four packets of thick-bedded amalgamated turbidite sandstone, an olistostromal shallow-water marine sandstone and conglomerate member, and a thin-bedded water-laid tuff member. A local unconformity of submarine origin occurs within the lower part of the Makah Formation except in the central part of the study area, where it forms the contact between the older Hoko River Formation and the Makah. Foraminiferal faunas indicate that the Makah Formation ranges in age from late Eocene (late Narizian Stage) to late Oligocene (Zemorrian Stage) and was deposited in a predominantly lower to middle bathyal environment. </p><p>The Makah strata are part of a deep marginal basin facies that crops out in the western part of the Olympic Peninsula, in southwesternmost Washington and coastal embayments in northwestern Oregon, and along the central part of the coast of western Vancouver Island. On the basis of limited subsurface data from exploratory wells, correlative deepmarginal-basin deposits underlie the inner continental shelf of Oregon and the continental shelf (Tofino Basin) along the southwestern side of Vancouver Island. </p><p>Directional structures in the Makah Formation indicate that the predominantly lithic arkosic sandstone that forms the turbidite packets was derived from the northwest. A possible source of the clastics is the dioritic, granitic, and volcanic terranes in the vicinity of the Hesquiat Peninsula on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Vertical and lateral variations of turbidite facies suggest that the four packets of sandstone were formed as depositional lobes on an outer submarine fan. Climatic and prior growth factors in regression explained 87 and 71 percent of the variance of the preditching and postditching earlywood widths, respectively, and 82 and 7O percent of the latewood widths for the same time periods. Early summer precipitation was significantly, and positively, correlated with preditching latewood growth. When pre and postditching records were merged into a single record, regression analysis explained less growth variation than when the two time periods were considered individually, implying a change in growth response following ditching. Prior to ditching, growth was most limited by dry summers which followed dry summers. After ditching, growth was less strongly linked with precipitation and more strongly linked with temperature. The stresses were measured with the U.S. Bureau of Mines borehole deformation gage in both the horizontal and vertical planes. Anomalously high stresses in both planes were observed in the block before quarrying. Relatively small stresses remained in the block after quarrying.
