In the laboratory, larger offspring were produced when the mother's food supply was reduced. In field populations, larger offspring were produced during the summer, a period of reduced food availability. Smaller offspring are produced in the spring, when food is readily available. Five exploratory wells have been drilled in the vicinity of the KBFZ, but none of them are producing thermal fluids; in fact, three have been abandoned. This may be because hydrothermal fluid discharges along the KBFZ are low. The Na-K-Ca and Na-Li geothermometers indicate that the waters discharging around Howard and Seigler Springs may have equilibrated at temperatures above 200 degree C. If boiling has occurred or is occurring, a chloride-enthalpy diagram may be appropriate. Such a diagram for the KBFZ shows that a water in excess of 250 degree C existed or may exist in the area. However, because currently measured temperatures rarely exceed 50 degree C and magnesium concentration in the water is high, very little deep high temperature water may be present. Remnants of oceanic crust now comprise the ophiolitic complexes of the Urd group. The oldest plutonic unit in the study is from one of these complexes and gave an age of 694 ± 8 Ma. Detrital zircons from the sedimentary Abt formation of the Urd group, which is intercalated with the ophiolitic rocks, were derived from source rocks with a mean age of 710 Ma. The Abt formation may be an accretionary wedge on the western margin of the Ar Rayn plate. Plate convergence was terminated by collision of the Afif and Ar Rayn plates during the Al Amar orogeny which began about 670 Ma. During collision, the Urd group rocks were deformed and in part obducted on to one or both plates. Synorogenic leucogranitoid rocks were intruded from 670 to 640 Ma. From about 640 to 630 Ma, widespread unfoliated dioritic plutons were emplaced in the Ar Rayn block, and represent the end of orogenesis related to collision. The cost to construct such a pond is approximately $173,000, or the equivalent of seven years' fuel bills using conventional heating equipment. In three trials with three sizes of fish (mean initial weights, 0.5, 3.2 and 4.3 g) and two water temperatures (8.3° and 15°C), no significant diet-related growth inhibition was detected. Recruitment to Age 1 was directly proportional to population fecundity but strongly influenced by the effects of the random environmental variables. The simulated observations were subjected to multiple regression analysis which detected the influence of the random environmental variables but did not reliably detect the influence of spawning stock. These telluride minerals have so far not been identified. The nearby Brewer mine, on the basis of chemical evidence, also contains tellurides. The probable telluride localities in South Carolina are now expanded to three, significantly increasing the few reports of Te minerals from the Au deposits of the southeastern Piedmont, many of which are now considered to be volcanogenic. The occurrence of telluride minerals in gold ore from the Haile-Brewer area may help to explain the divergence in Au/Ag ratios reported in chemical analyses of drill core, ore samples and production records. Gas production estimates are very close to revised pre-perihelion estimates by Newburn based on 1910 observations of Halley; the increase in observed gas production post-perihelion may be explained by a variety of factors. The energy contribution from multiply scattered sunlight and thermal emission by coma dust increases the total energy reaching the Halley nucleus at perihelion by a factor of 2.4.
