Permeability ranged over four orders of magnitude, from around 10</span><sup>−22</sup><span>&nbsp;to 10</span><sup>−18</sup><span>&nbsp;m</span><sup>2</sup><span>&nbsp;(1 darcy = 0.987 × 10</span><sup>−12</sup><span>&nbsp;m</span><sup>2</sup><span>). The lowest values were characteristic of the montmorillonite-rich and finer grained non-clay gouges. Illite, kaolinite, and chlorite had intermediate permeabilities, while the highest values were typical of the serpentine and coarser grained non-clay gouges. Grain size was an important factor in determining permeability, particularly for the clay-rich samples. The coarse grained gouges were the most permeable and decreased in permeability after shearing. Conversely, the fine grained gouges had characteristically lower permeabilities that did not vary significantly after various amounts of shearing. The permeabilities of the non-clay samples were not significantly different than those of the clays. Therefore, comminuted rock flours can be equally as effective in reducing the flow of water as the characteristically low permeability clay gouges. The strengths of the samples were quite variable. The non-clay gouges were consistently the strongest, with yield points (beginning of nonelastic behavior) around 850 MPa, while montmorillonite had an anomalously low strength in relation to all the other gouges at 250 MPa. Strength of the saturated samples under drained (low pore pressure) conditions did not correlate with high or low permeability. However, the low permeabilities of these gouges could be a factor in the measured low shear stresses along fault regions if excess pore pressures were created as a result of shearing or compaction, and this pressure was unable to dissipate through a thick section of the material.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/JB089iB05p03193","issn":"01480227","usgsCitation":"Morrow, C., Shi, L., and Byerlee, J., 1984, Permeability of fault gouge under confining pressure and shear stress: Journal of Geophysical Research Solid Earth, v. 89, no. One arrangement of the equipment weighs about 500 kilograms, and can be contained on two sleds, each about 3 meters long. Simplified performance equations are given, and experiments with nozzle design suggest a characteristic number describing the efficiency of each design, and a minimum bore-hole diameter very close to 6 centimeters for a hot water drill. Also discussed is field experience with cold weather, water supply, and contact with englacial cavities and the glacier bed.","largerWorkTitle":"CRREL Special Report (US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory)","conferenceTitle":"Ice Drilling Technology, Proceedings of the Second International Workshop/Symposium.","conferenceLocation":"Calgary, Alberta, Can","language":"English","publisher":"US Army Cold Regions Research & Engineering Lab","publisherLocation":"Hanover, NH, USA","issn":"03757935","usgsCitation":"Taylor, P.L., 1984, HOT WATER DRILL FOR TEMPERATE ICE., <i>in</i> CRREL Special Report (US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory), Calgary, Alberta, Can, p. 105-117.","startPage":"105","endPage":"117","numberOfPages":"13","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":221857,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a2e82e4b0c8380cd5c5e7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Taylor, Philip L.","contributorId":96829,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"Philip","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364760,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

We found that the proportion of juvenile Dunlins (<i>Calidris alpina</i>) in the kills of a Merlin (<i>Falco columbarius</i>) one winter at Bolinas Lagoon, California was greater than the proportion of juveniles in the lagoon's winter population. This is evidence that raptor predation may be one of the factors contributing to the age differences in annual mortality rates of shorebirds. We suggest that the greater vulnerability of juveniles to predation by the Merlin may be caused by age-related differences in Dunlin flocking behavior.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Society","usgsCitation":"Kus, B., Ashman, P., Page, G., and Stenzel, L., 1984, Age-related mortality in a wintering population of dunlin: The Auk, v. 101, p. 69-73.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"69","endPage":"73","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129855,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":341260,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/4086224 "}],"volume":"101","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db689232","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kus, B.E.","contributorId":99492,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kus","given":"B.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315986,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ashman, P.","contributorId":44867,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ashman","given":"P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315984,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Page, G.","contributorId":34463,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Page","given":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315983,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Stenzel, L.","contributorId":91053,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stenzel","given":"L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315985,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

These moths oviposit in the ovary of the plants and the larvae are entirely dependent upon <i>Yucca</i> seeds for food. The extent and distribution of larval seed predation was examined in nine <i>Yucca</i> species in the southwestern United States. The proportion of seeds destroyed by the yucca moth ranged from 3 % in Y. schidigera from coastal southern California to 45 % in one population of Y. angustissima from southern Utah. This sampling was done in 1979 at which time the <i>Y. schidigera</i> population averaged 0.6 larvae per fruit and the population of <i>Y. angustissima</i> averaged 9.3 larvae per fruit. A second sampling of these populations in 1982 averaged 0.5 for <i>Y. schidigera</i> and 5.6 for <i>Y. angustissima</i>. Several species showed significant differences between populations in the number of larvae per fruit. Contrary to expectation, based on the dogma that fruit production is dependent upon <i>Tegeticula</i> pollination (which is always followed by oviposition), a large number of fruits were found without larvae. The proportion varied greatly between populations but was as high as two thirds of all fruits in some populations. Observations suggested that these flowers had been pollinated by <i>Tegeticula</i> and the moths had oviposited in them but that the eggs failed to hatch.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"University of Notre Dame","doi":"10.2307/2425472","usgsCitation":"Keeley, J.E., Keeley, S.C., Swift, C.C., and Lee, J., 1984, Seed predation due to the yucca moth symbiosis: American Midland Naturalist, v. 112, p. 187-191, https://doi.org/10.2307/2425472.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"187","endPage":"191","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129829,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"112","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fba24","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keeley, Jon E. 0000-0002-4564-6521 jon_keeley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4564-6521","contributorId":1268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keeley","given":"Jon","email":"jon_keeley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":315974,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Keeley, Sterling C.","contributorId":112968,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keeley","given":"Sterling","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315972,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Swift, C. Geological Survey (USGS) has been developing a program which would emphasize broad-scale surveys of the continental margin and intensive studies of 'baseline corridors' in various areas of the U. S. EEZ to gather energy and mining information in this new frontier as quickly as possible. Of twelve baseline corridors identified to date along the east and west coasts and the Gulf of Mexico, the highest priority would be placed on areas off the west coast, including Juan De Fuca and Gorda Ridges and off Hawaii. Each corridor assessment will involve collection of multi-channel and high resolution geophysical data, bottom relief and sampling, and production of reports and cartographic products displaying the scientific findings of the assessments.","largerWorkTitle":"Technical Papers of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping","conferenceTitle":"Technical Papers of the 44th Annual Meeting of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping.","conferenceLocation":"Washington, DC, USA","language":"English","publisher":"American Congress on Surveying & Mapping","publisherLocation":"Falls Church, VA, USA","issn":"07483244","usgsCitation":"Hill, G., 1984, U. We have studied the oxygen and sulphur isotope geochemistry of sulphides, sulphur, sulphate and water in the field and in experiments to identify sources of oxygen and reaction mechanisms of sulphate formation. Here we report that the oxygen isotope composition of sulphate in acid mine drainage shows a large variation due to differing proportions of atmospheric- and water-derived oxygen from both chemical and bacterially-mediated oxidation. 18O-enrichment of sulphate results from pyrite oxidation facilitated by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in aerated environments. Oxygen isotope analysis may therefore be useful in monitoring the effectiveness of abatement programmes designed to inhibit bacterial oxidation. Sulphur isotopes show no significant fractionation between pyrite and sulphate, indicating the quantitative insignificance of intermediate oxidation states of sulphur under acid conditions.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Nature","doi":"10.1038/308538a0","issn":"00280836","usgsCitation":"Taylor, B., Wheeler, M., and Nordstrom, D.K., 1984, Isotope composition of sulphate in acid mine drainage as measure of bacterial oxidation: Nature, v. 308, no. 5959, p. 538-541, https://doi.org/10.1038/308538a0.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"538","endPage":"541","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":220391,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"308","issue":"5959","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a3f85e4b0c8380cd645be","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Taylor, B.E.","contributorId":23262,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"B.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":366765,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wheeler, M.C.","contributorId":79955,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wheeler","given":"M.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":366766,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nordstrom, D.
