Rainfall intensities of 2.5 inches per hour, and more than 16 inches in 18 hours were recorded. Almost instantaneous runoff caused widespread flooding near the coastlines of both islands. Parts of Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas were inundated with four feet or more of mud and flood water. Harry S. Truman Airport was flooded for two days with two to three feet of ponded water. Three phases appear to control the bulk compositions: Mn and Fe oxyhydroxides and aluminosilicates. Relatively wide compositional variations are evident throughout the area. Nodules with high Mn/Fe ratios, high Cu, Mg, Mo, Ni and Zn concentrations and high todorokite/δ-MnO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>ratios have granular surface textures and are confined to an east-west trending depression with thin Quaternary sediment cover. Nodules with low Mn/Fe ratios, high concentrations of As, Ca, Ce, Co, La, P, Sr, Ti, V, Y and Zr and low todorokite/δ-MnO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>ratios have smooth surfaces and are confined to shallower areas with relatively thick Quaternary sediment to the north and south of the depression.</p><p>All nodules in the area have compositions which are influenced by diagenesis, but those with the most marked diagenetic signature (high Mn/Fe and Cu/Ni ratios, low Ce/La ratios and more todorokite) are found in areas of very slow or non-existent sedimentation; many of these nodules are actually in contact with outcropping Tertiary sediment. This paradox may be resolved by postulating, by analogy with some shallow-water occurrences, that the nodules accrete from bottom waters which have enhanced particulate and dissolved metal contents derived from diagenetic reaction in areas remote from the site of nodule formation. The metals are supplied in a bottom flow (probably Antarctic Bottom Water) which also erodes, or prevents modern sedimentation in, the depression. Nodules on the flanks of the depression are not evidently affected by this flow and derive at least pan of their constituent metals from diagenetic reaction in the underlying Quaternary sediment.</p><p>Apparently, abyssal diagenetic nodules can have an immediate and a remote diagenetic metal source. Metal fluxes derived from pore water dissolved metal gradients may not be relevant to particular accreting nodules if a significant fraction of their metals is derived from outside the area in which they form.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(84)90374-0","issn":"00167037","usgsCitation":"Calvert, S., and Piper, D., 1984, Geochemistry of ferromanganese nodules from DOMES site a, Northern Equatorial Pacific: Multiple diagenetic metal sources in the deep sea: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 48, no. 10, p. 1913-1928, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(84)90374-0.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"1913","endPage":"1928","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220614,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"48","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a16f4e4b0c8380cd5531d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Calvert, S.E.","contributorId":12196,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Calvert","given":"S.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":366911,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Piper, D.Z.","contributorId":34154,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Piper","given":"D.Z.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":366912,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Large calderas subsided 2.0, 1.3, and 0.6 Ma ago, on eruption of ash flow sheets that represent at least 2500, 280, and 1000 km</span><sup>3</sup><span>&nbsp;of zoned magma. More than 60 other rhyolite lavas and tuffs permit reconstruction of the long-term chemical and isotopic evolution of the silicic system. Narrow δ</span><sup>18</sup><span>O ranges in the ash flow sheets contrast with wide δ</span><sup>18</sup><span>O variations in postcaldera lavas of the first and third caldera cycles. Earliest postcollapse lavas are 3 to 6‰ lighter than the preceding ash flow sheets. The O</span><sup>18</sup><span>&nbsp;depletions were short-lived events that immediately followed caldera subsidence; hundreds of cubic kilometers of magma were drastically&nbsp;</span><sup>18</sup><span>O depleted and thousands were depleted by 1–2‰. Sequences of postcaldera lavas record partial recovery toward precaldera δ</span><sup>18</sup><span>O values; secular trends between collapse events thus reflect gradual reenrichment of the roofmost magma in δ</span><sup>18</sup><span>O. Much of the subcaldera reservoir was affected, because lavas that erupted as far apart as 115 km reflect the same pattern of depletion and partial recovery. Contemporaneous extracaldera rhyolites have the highest δ</span><sup>18</sup><span>O values in the volcanic field and show no effects of the repeated depletions. Sr and Pb isotope ratios of intracaldera rhyolites jump to more radiogenic values at times of caldera formation and show a longterm zigzag pattern like that of δ</span><sup>18</sup><span>O. Although some contamination by foundering roof rocks seenis to be required, water was probably the predominant contaminant. Even if roof rocks had been strongly depleted in O</span><sup>18</sup><span>&nbsp;before engulfment, their assimilation would have been far from sufficient to account for the large O</span><sup>18</sup><span>&nbsp;shift. The low- O</span><sup>18</sup><span>&nbsp;lavas contain no xenocrysts and show no trace element or phenocryst evidence of massive contamination. Their Fe-Ti-oxide temperatures indicate no cooling relative to the caldera-forming ash flow magma, and their whole-rock, glass, and phenoeryst chemistry suggests compositional continuity with the ash flow sequence. Oxygen exchange between the magma and a mass of low-O</span><sup>18</sup><span>&nbsp;water greatly exceeding solubility limits may require (1) recurrent explosive activity to sustain access and mixing of water with the magma and (2) convection of the magma reservoir to prevent local saturation.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/JB089iB10p08339","issn":"01480227","usgsCitation":"Hildreth, W., Christiansen, R., and O’Neil, J.R., 1984, Catastrophic isotopic modification of rhyolitic magma at times of caldera subsidence, Yellowstone Plateau Volcanic Field: Journal of Geophysical Research Solid Earth, v. 89, no. DDE was detected in 220 eggs sampled; eggshell thickness was negatively correlated with residues of DDE and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's). Other contaminants were detected in 35% or fewer of the eggs. Except for the two Columbia River colonies in which local DDE contamination was a probable compounding factor, a strong north-south clinal pattern of DDE residues among colonies existed. Southern colonies were most contaminated, and observed productivity was below population maintenance in one colony (Ruby Lake). At DDE levels in eggs above 8 ppm, clutch size and productivity decreased, and the incidence of cracked eggs increased. No evidence of breeding-ground DDE-DDT contamination was found except along the Columbia River.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3808448","usgsCitation":"Henny, C.J., Blus, Major carbonate units within a 16-km**2 study area were readily distinguished, and some aspects of their structure and stratigraphy could be inferred from image spectral signatures. Spectral data channels centered at 1. 6 and 2. 2 mu m accounted for much of the data sensitivity to lithologic differences. Rock texture, organic matter content, and weathering expression were important lithologic factors producing spectral variation.","conferenceTitle":"Proceedings of the International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment, Third Thematic Conference: Remote Sensing for Exploration Geology.","conferenceLocation":"Colorado Springs, CO, USA","language":"English","publisher":"Environmental Research Inst of Michigan","publisherLocation":"Ann Arbor, MI, USA","usgsCitation":"Crowley, J.K., 1984, MULTISPECTRAL REMOTE SENSING OF CARBONATE ROCKS IN THE CONFUSION RANGE, UTAH., Proceedings of the International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment, Third Thematic Conference: Remote Sensing for Exploration Geology., Colorado Springs, CO, USA, p. 837-851.","startPage":"837","endPage":"851","numberOfPages":"15","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222029,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a4b02e4b0c8380cd69214","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Crowley, James K.","contributorId":10928,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Crowley","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364144,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Small amounts of North Slope crude oil introduced at low tide directly into burrow openings (mostly made by the crustacean Callianassa) resulted in a limited and temporary reduction in the number of burrow openings. In contrast, a layer of oil-saturated sand 1 cm thick buried about 5 cm below the sediment surface sharply reduced the number of burrow openings. After a year, the few new burrows penetrated only the margins of the experimental plot, and bioturbation below the buried oil-saturated sand layer declined dramatically. The experiments suggest that small amounts of oil temporarily stranded by tides in themselves have no long-range effect on burrowing behavior. The fauna, however, are capable of introducing measurable amounts of oil into the subsurface, where it is retained long after the rest of the stranded oil had washed away. A buried layer of oil-saturated sand greatly reduces infaunal activity; the oil presents an effective barrier that can persist for years. The oil incorporated into the sediment from burrow openings showed evidence of degradation after 7 months. In contrast the layer of buried oil remained essentially undergraded after a period of two years, even though oil in lower concentrations above the layer was degraded after a period of one year. This variation in degree of degradation of the buried oil, as well as the heterogeneity of oil distribution wherever the oil has been incorporated from the surface, emphasises the importance of careful sampling in any attempt to locate or monitor the presence of spilled oil in the substrate.In a series of experiments in Willapa Bay, Washington, small amounts of North Slope crude oil introduced at low tide directly into burrow openings resulted in a limited and temporary reduction in the number of burrow openings. In contrast, the layer of buried oil remained essentially undegraded after a period of two years. Tourmalinites are more widespread than previously recognized and are especially common in Proterozoic and early Paleozoic sequences dominated by clastic metasedimentary rocks. They consist of conformable layers made up primarily of quartz and abundant tourmaline, the latter typically exceeding 15% to 20% of rock volumes. A few tourmalinites display striking sedimentary structures such as graded bedding, cross-laminations, slump and flame structures, and rip-up clasts. These and other geologic features provide important constraints for assessing the origin of these rocks, and they suggest that tourmalinites form by the early diagenetic modification of a primary boron-rich chemical precipitate. Tourmalinites are significant in preserving a valuable record of unusual chemical and paleogeographic conditions in clastic sedimentary basins, and in their close association with a variety of stratabound mineral deposits.</p></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0091-7613(1984)12<713:STIMTA>2.0.CO;2","issn":"00917613","usgsCitation":"Slack, J.F., Herriman, N., Barnes, R., and Plimer, I., 1984, Stratiform tourmalinites in metamorphic terranes and their geologic significance: Geology, v. 12, no. 12, p. 713-716, https://doi.org/10.1130/0091-7613(1984)12<713:STIMTA>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"713","endPage":"716","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":221963,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"12","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b98c1e4b08c986b31c122","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Slack, J.
