Data analysis is based on a unified physico-chemical model for reaction of simple ions with polyelectrolytes employing a modified Henderson-Hasselbalch equation. Peat exhibited an apparent intrinsic acid dissociation constant of 10</span><sup>−4.05</sup><span>, and an apparent intrinsic metal ion binding constant of: 400 for cadmium ion; 600 for zinc ion; 4000 for copper ion; 20000 for lead ion. A humic acid was found to have an apparent intrinsic proton binding constant of 10</span><sup>−2.6</sup><span>. Copper ion binding to this humic acid sample occurred at two types of sites. The first site exhibited reaction characteristics which were independent of solution pH and required the interaction of two ligands on the humic acid matrix to simultaneously complex with each copper ion. Diets of both cervids were comprised mainly of common old-growth flora, particularly in winter. High dietary overlap suggested competitive interactions for food, especially in winter when forage resources were least available. Predominant forages in fall and winter diets seemed to afford little opportunity for cervids to select different plant parts. Crude protein (CP), in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), and phosphorus (P) in important forages varied with phenology, but seasonal trends were more pronounced for shrubs and grasses than forbs and trees. CP, IVDMD, and P in cervid diets also varied seasonally and usually in the following ascending order: winter, fall, summer, spring. CP and P appeared to be adequate in diets, but low IVDMD suggested that digestible energy was limited. Few significant differences in seasonal dietary qualities were demonstrated between elk and deer. The collective cervid population (and its habitat) in the Hoh Valley is unmanaged and probably at equilibrium with its food resource, or at ecological carrying capacity. Results are discussed in light of herbivore--habitat interactions at equilibrium densities.<br Fluorite and sphalerite at 1 atmosphere confining pressure","docAbstract":"<p><span>More than 1,300 measurements on fluid inclusions in fluorite and sphalerite indicate that stretching proceeds systematically and predictably. In order to generate internal pressures that are sufficiently high to cause stretching, most inclusions must be heated beyond their initial homogenization temperatures, i.e., overheated. The amount of overheating necessary to initiate stretching depends on the P-V-T-X properties of the inclusion fluid, the inclusion size and shape, physical properties of the host mineral, and the confining pressure. In the range of homogenization temperatures and salinities examined in this study, the amount of overheating necessary to initiate stretching of inclusions in fluorite is inversely related to inclusion volume. The results of this study show that the measured homogenization temperature of a fluid inclusion may be considerably higher than the true homogenization temperature if the internal pressure reached sufficiently high values during previous testing in the laboratory or, less likely, during postentrapment thermal events in nature. The systematic relationship between the internal pressure necessary to initiate stretching and the inclusion volume provides a means of recognizing previously stretched inclusions and estimating the magnitude of postentrapment thermal events. Furthermore, reproducibility of homogenization temperature measurements, lack of microscopically observable fractures in the inclusion walls, and the lack of a noticeable increase in the vapor bubble size after heating are insufficient to prove that an inclusion has not stretched.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.79.1.141","issn":"03610128","usgsCitation":"Bodnar, R., and Bethke, P.M., 1984, Systematics of stretching of fluid inclusions; I. Data were collected for about 300 runoff events on four different urban land-use basins - commercial, highway, single-family residential, and apartment. These data were collected from sewers that carried only stormwater runoff. In analyzing the rainfall-runoff data, three types of relations were found. A one-curve, linear relation occurred for the commercial basin that has 98 percent of the basin as hydraulically effective impervious area. A two-curve, intercepted relation occurred for the highway basin - a linear curve for the low and medium events observed and a second-degree curve for high events observed. A two-curve, disjointed relation occurred for the remaining two basins - the residential basin and the apartment basin. This relation also contained a linear curve for low and medium events and a second-degree curve for the high events. However, the two curves do not intersect, but are disjointed.","largerWorkTitle":"University of Kentucky, Office of Engineering Services, (Bulletin) UKY BU","conferenceTitle":"Proceedings - 1984 International Symposium on Urban Hydrology, Hydraulics and Sediment Control.","conferenceLocation":"Lexington, KY, USA","language":"English","publisher":"Univ of Kentucky","publisherLocation":"Coll of Engineering, Lexington, KY, USA","issn":"02706504","isbn":"089779606X","usgsCitation":"Miller, R.A., 1984, RAINFALL-RUNOFF MECHANICS FOR DEVELOPED URBAN BASINS, SOUTH FLORIDA., <i>in</i> University of Kentucky, Office of Engineering Services, (Bulletin) UKY BU, Lexington, KY, USA, p. 135-141.","startPage":"135","endPage":"141","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":221970,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a9323e4b0c8380cd80c35","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, Robert A.","contributorId":52938,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364493,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Despite significant compositional variation within lavas forming the Honolulu Volcanics, these lavas are isotopically (Sr, Nd, Pb) very similar which contrasts with the isotopic heterogeneity of the Koolau tholeiites. Among Hawaiian tholeiitic suites, the Koolau lavas are geochemically distinct because of their lower iron contents and Sr and Nd isotopic ratios which range to bulk earth values. These geochemical data preclude simple models such as derivation of the Honolulu Volcanics and Koolau tholeiites from a common source by different degrees of melting or by mixing of two geochemically distinct sources. There may be no genetic relationship between the origin and evolution of these two lava suites; however, the trend shown by Koolau Range lavas of increasing<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>143</sup>Nd/<sup>144</sup>Nd and decreasing<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr with decreasing eruption age and increasing alkalinity also occurs at Haleakala, East Molokai and Kauai volcanoes. A complex mixing model proposed for Haleakala lavas can account for the variations in Sr and Nd isotopic ratios and incompatible element abundances found in lavas from the Koolau Range. This model may reflect mixing and melting processes occurring during ascent of relatively enriched mantle through relatively depleted MORB-related lithosphere. Although two isotopically distinct components may be sufficient to explain Sr and Nd isotopic variations at individual Hawaiian volcanoes, more than two isotopically distinct materials are required to explain variations of Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic ratios in all Hawaiian lavas.</p></div></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0012-821X(84)90079-7","issn":"0012821X","usgsCitation":"Roden, M., Frey, F., and Clague, D., 1984, Geochemistry of tholeiitic and alkalic lavas from the Koolau Range, Oahu, Hawaii: Implications for Hawaiian volcanism: Earth and Planetary Science Letters, v. 69, no. 1, p. 141-158, https://doi.org/10.1016/0012-821X(84)90079-7.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"141","endPage":"158","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":225612,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Koolau Range","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -158.01361083984375,\n              21.16904512040848\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.59063720703125,\n              21.16904512040848\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.59063720703125,\n              21.749295836732088\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.01361083984375,\n              21.749295836732088\n            ],\n            [\n              -158.01361083984375,\n              21.16904512040848\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"69","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a1724e4b0c8380cd553cc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Roden, M.F.","contributorId":55581,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Roden","given":"M.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":367209,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Frey, F.A.","contributorId":12618,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frey","given":"F.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":367207,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Clague, D.A.","contributorId":36129,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clague","given":"D.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":367208,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The CO2 produced by the oxidation of the coal is extremely depleted in 13C relative to normal atmospheric CO2. The change in the ??13C value of atmospheric CO2 near the vents resulting from the burning coal was not recorded in tree rings from red cedars, but the ??13C values of some C3 and C4 type plants collected from within the area were greatly affected. Within this wedge, seismic reflection profiles reveal an abundance of potential hydrocarbon-trapping structures. These structures include antiforms, thrust and normal faults, and stratigraphic pinchouts. Maximum closure on these features is 2 km. In addition, the silt and possibly sand size sediment within the offscraped turbidite deposits, and the porous diatomaceous pelagic deposits interbedded with and at the base of the wedge, may define suitable reservoirs for the entrapment of hydrocarbons. Potential seals for these reservoirs include diagenetically-altered and -produced siliceous and carbonate sediment. The organic carbon input into the central Aleutian Trench, based on carbon analyses of DSDP Legs 18 and 19 core samples, suggests that the average organic carbon content within the accretionary body is approximately 0.3-0.6%. Heat flow across the Aleutian Terrace indicates that at present the oil generation window lies at a depth of 3-6.5 km. At depths of 8 km (which corresponds to the maximum depth the offscraped sediment has been seismically resolved beneath the lower trench slope), the probable high (170-180??C) temperatures prohibit all but gas generation. The dewatering of trench sediment and subducted oceanic crust should produce an abundance of fluids circulating within the accretionary body. These fluids and gases can conduct hydrocarbons to any of the abundant trapping geometries or be lost from the system through sea floor seepage. In the Aleutian accretionary body all the conditions necessary for the formation of oil and gas deposits exist. The size and ultimate preservation of these deposits, however, are dependent on the deformational history of the prism both during accretion and after the accretion process has been superceded by subsequent tectonic regimes. ?? 1984.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Marine and Petroleum Geology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0264-8172(84)90083-7","issn":"02648172","usgsCitation":"McCarthy, J., Stevenson, A., Scholl, D., and Vallier, T., 1984, Speculations on the petroleum geology of the accretionary body: an example from the central Aleutians: Marine and Petroleum Geology, v. 1, no. 2, p. 151-167, https://doi.org/10.1016/0264-8172(84)90083-7.","startPage":"151","endPage":"167","numberOfPages":"17","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":268658,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0264-8172(84)90083-7"},{"id":220577,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"1","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b95b8e4b08c986b31b0a0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McCarthy, J.","contributorId":50290,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McCarthy","given":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":365655,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Stevenson, A.J.","contributorId":27864,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stevenson","given":"A.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":365654,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Scholl, D.W.","contributorId":106461,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scholl","given":"D.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":365657,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Vallier, T.L.","contributorId":69526,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vallier","given":"T.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":365656,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}
