The results show evidence of radioactive disequilibrium in six of the nine samples investigated. Disequilibria are attributable to solution to solid 234U recoil gain (weakly mineralised zones adjacent to the main mineralisation) and solid to solution 234U recoil loss (moderate to highly mineralised zones). The absence of significant 238U loss in the samples emphasises the reducing conditions at the sampled depths. ?? 1984.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"LITHOS","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0024-4937(84)90021-5","issn":"00244937","usgsCitation":"Smellie, J.A., and Rosholt, J., 1984, Radioactive disequilibria in mineralised fracture samples from two uranium occurrences in northern Sweden: LITHOS, v. 17, no. Talc commonly forms by hydrothermal alteration of rocks rich in magnesium and iron (ultramafic rocks) and by low-grade thermal metamorphism of siliceous dolomites. The fact that talc often occurs in association with other minerals, or that its crystalline form may be platy, fibrous, acicular, or massive, does not modify its definition. This advance assures a prominent future position for the use of these techniques in geochemical exploration for concealed mineral deposits. Partial dissolution techniques are classified as single dissolution or sequential multiple dissolution depending on the number of steps taken in the procedure, or as “nonselective” extraction and as “selective” extraction in terms of the relative specificity of the extraction. The choice of dissolution techniques for use in geochemical exploration is dictated by the geology of the area, the type and degree of weathering, and the expected chemical forms of the ore and of the pathfinding elements. The numerically most abundant taxa were Bacillariophyceae (Achnanthes minutissima, Cocconeis placentula, Cymbella microcephala, C. sinuata, Fragilaria construens, F. crotonensis, Navicula spp., Synedra acus and S. rumpens), and the Cyanophyta Lyngbya spp., a co-dominant during spring and summer. Population densities of Lyngbya spp. were markedly reduced at all Cu concentrations. Population densities of the principal Chlorophyta (Spirogyra spp., Cladophora spp.) and the diatom Amphipleura pellucida were reduced at 5 mu g l-1 CuT. Of the 22 most abundant taxa, 16 were reduced in abundance by continuous exposure to 10 mu g l-1 CuT. There was no commensurate reduction in standing crop. Achnanthes minutissima was the primary replacement species. Other taxa more abundant at 5 mu g l-1 CuT than in the control were Ceratoneis arcus, Cocconeis placentula, Navicula spp. and Synedra rumpens. Only A. minutissima and Calothrix spp. were more abundant at 10 mu g l-1 than in the control. The ratio can only remain constant if no reaction is occurring and, therefore, Connan's data on 'reaction time' in petroleum generation (assumed to be the age of the sediment) only measures the time elapsed since the system formed. Thus, the widely cited pseudo-activation energy of 11-14 kcal/mole computed from Connan's equation for the start of oil generation from kerogen is meaningless.-Author","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Petroleum Geology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","doi":"10.1111/j.1747-5457.1984.tb00166.x","issn":"01416421","usgsCitation":"Barker, C., 1984, A problem with estimating the pseudo- activation energy of kerogen thermal maturation from Connan's time-temperature relation in oil genesis.: Journal of Petroleum Geology, v. 7, no. 1, p. 109-112, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1747-5457.1984.tb00166.x.","startPage":"109","endPage":"112","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220529,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":269630,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1747-5457.1984.tb00166.x"}],"volume":"7","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2007-12-18","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059e50ae4b0c8380cd46aae","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barker, C.E.","contributorId":69991,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barker","given":"C.E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":365810,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Surface exposures of the arc extend northward to approximately 57°30'N., or midway through the Ugashik quadrangle, but none are observed north of that point. Subsurface drill-hole data (Brockway and others, 1975) indicate continuation of the arc, possibly offset to the northwest of the northernmost known surface exposures.</p><p>In the extreme northern part of the Ugashik and Karluk quadrangles, volcanic rocks again become important. Experiments were conducted under both aerobic and anaerobic sterile conditions, as well as under aerobic conditions in the presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, to elucidate the pathways of oxidation. Oxygen isotope fractionation between SO2-4 and H2O varied from +4.0 %. (anaerobic, sterile) to + 18.0 %. (aerobic, with T. ferrooxidans.). The oxygen isotope composition of dissolved oxygen utilized in both chemical and microbially-mediated oxidation was also determined (+11.4 %., by T. ferrooxidans; +18.4 %., chemical). Contributions of water-derived oxygen and dissolved oxygen to the sulfate produced in the oxidation of pyrite could thus be estimated. Water-derived oxygen constituted from 23 to ~ 100 percent of the oxygen in the sulfate produced in the experiments, and this closely approximates the range of contribution in natural acid mine drainage. Oxidation of sulfides in anaerobic, water-saturated environments occurs primarily by chemical oxidation pathways, whereas oxidation of sulfides in well-aerated, unsaturated zone environments occurs dominantly by microbially mediated pathways.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(84)90315-6","issn":"00167037","usgsCitation":"Taylor, B., Wheeler, M., and Nordstrom, D.K., 1984, Stable isotope geochemistry of acid mine drainage: Experimental oxidation of pyrite: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 48, no. 12, p. 2669-2678, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(84)90315-6.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"2669","endPage":"2678","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":220539,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"48","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9678e4b08c986b31b518","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Taylor, B.E.","contributorId":23262,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"B.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":366210,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wheeler, M.C.","contributorId":79955,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wheeler","given":"M.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":366211,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nordstrom, D. Most lavas are aphyric or sparsely phyric (< 10% phenocrysts) and have phenocrysts of olivine (Fo77-80), clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, and microphenocrysts of plagioclase (An53-68) in a fine-grained groundmass of olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, opaques, potassic oligoclase, ?? nepheline and accessary phases. Oxygen isotope and Fe2O3 FeO data suggest that most samples are fresh, although H2O contents are high. Xenoliths of chromite-bearing harzburgites and dunites, both with cumulate textures occur in one locality. Major- and trace-element concentrations are similar to other oceanic volcanic islands. Most major elements and compatible trace elements vary systematically with respect to the Mg number [ 100Mg (Mg + Fe2+)]. In contrast, the incompatible trace elements do not correlate with the Mg number, but do covary with other incompatible elements. Simple closed-system shallow fractionation cannot be invoked to explain the observed chemical variation in the lavas. Derivation of the fractionated lavas (Mg number = 66-48) probably involved polybaric crystal fractionation from a high-Mg-number parental liquid. In addition, variable-source concentration of a trace-element-rich minor phase is postulated. However, the mantle was homogeneous with respect to the ratio of  87Sr 86Sr. New KAr age data are not consistent with the hypothesis that Ponape and the Caroline Ridge represent a simple \"hot spot\". ?? 1984.","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0009-2541(84)90138-4","issn":"00092541","usgsCitation":"Dixon, T., Batiza, R., Futa, K., and Martin, D., 1984, Petrochemistry, age and isotopic composition of alkali basalts from Ponape Island, Western Pacific: Chemical Geology, v. 43, no. 1-2, p. 1-28, https://doi.org/10.1016/0009-2541(84)90138-4.","productDescription":"28 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"28","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220463,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266108,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0009-2541(84)90138-4"}],"volume":"43","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a777ce4b0c8380cd784e1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dixon, T.H.","contributorId":14947,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dixon","given":"T.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":365383,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Batiza, Rodey","contributorId":95613,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Batiza","given":"Rodey","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":365386,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Futa, Kiyoto 0000-0001-8649-7510 kfuta@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8649-7510","contributorId":619,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Futa","given":"Kiyoto","email":"kfuta@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":365384,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Martin, D.","contributorId":75269,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":365385,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}
