Maps are prepared showing water levels measured in wells each May to coincide with seasonal low levels, and each September to coincide with seasonal high levels. The mapped area shows 16 well fields which supplied 128 million gallons to municipalities on May 15, 1979. The water is withdrawn from the Floridan aquifer, the major aquifer in Florida. Water levels were significantly higher in May 1979 than in May 1978. Heavy rains on May 7 and 8th deluged the well-field areas with 2 to 18 inches of rain. The maximum increase in water levels from May 1978 to May 1979 was more than 8 feet at the Eldridge-Wilde well field. About 15 percent of the county is covered by several hundred lakes whose surface areas range in size from a few to several thousand acres. Much of the natural drainage has been altered by canalization or regulated by control structures. Under natural conditions streamflow is seasonal, usually high in September or October and low in May or June, in phase with the rainy season. Control structures are used to maintain lake levels within a relatively small range in stage, producing greater seasonal variations in river flow than before regulation. Dissolved-solids concentration of much of the surface water is less than 240 mg/l, in some, much less. The water typically is of calcium bicarbonate type. Color is fairly high, in water draining from swamps, where the pickup of humic acids is significant. The abundance and size of extinct travertine deposits suggest that in many places, such as pinnacles at the southwest end of the Searles Lake basin, California, spring activity was once more widespread and copious than it is now. Travertine of Eocene age has been reported, and a scattering of later Tertiary occurrences is known. But where age has been inferred, the inferred ages are predominantly Pleistocene or younger. So travertine seems to be a geologically transient phenomenon, subject either to removal by erosion or to burial and disappearance. Many travertine deposits are known to be on or close to faults. Their occurrence in otherwise structurally featureless alluvial valleys may, therefore, suggest the possibility of a hidden fault. From the Front Range to the Pacific, more than 300 travertime deposits have been identified. The map shows that the deposits are widely dispersed. However, there are apparent groupings on the Wasatch Fault and associated tectonic areas trending northward in Utah and southern Idaho, and also near the great fault zone that marks the eastern boundary of the Sierra Nevada, California. Residues of almost all the pesticides selected for monitoring were found in water in the drains. Stratified sand and gravel deposits form the principal unconsolidated aquifers. These aquifers are generally less than 50 feet thick in most of the study area; however, an area in north-central Wilbraham, near the Chicopee River, is underlain by stratified drift deposits more than 200 feet thick that may be capable of yielding more than 300 gal/min (gallons per minute) to individual wells. Bedrock aquifers are generally of two types: Triassic and Jurassic sedimentary rock lies west of a north-south trending fault, and Paleozoic metamorphic, and igneous rock lies east of the fault. The median yield of wells in sedimentary bedrock is 15 gal/min; yields range from 2 to 110 gal/min. These releases were routed northward down the Tioga River to Lindley, Erwins, and Corning, New York: combined with flows routed down the Cohocton River from Campbell to Corning, New York; and then routed southeastward down the Chemung River from Corning to Chemung, New York. The models used to route the flows of Cohocton and Chemung Rivers accounted for bank-storage discharge and streamflow depletion by well pumpage. In general, 17 water years of concurrent streamflow data were available for model calibration and verification.
\n
Three hypothetical reservoir releases were made from the reservoirs and routed to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, using the models developed in this study and models developed downstream to Wilkes-Barre in a previous study. A hypothetical makeup water requirement of 65 cubic feet per second was assumed. Two historical low-flow periods were investigated. The first hypothetical release investigated was a constant 100 cubic feet per second, and the second release was a constant 70 cubic feet per second. The third scheme was a hypothetical release of 100 cubic feet per second for three days followed by a constant 70 cubic feet per second for the duration of the period considered. Constant 100 cubic feet per second releases arrived downstream more quickly than constant 70 cubic feet per second releases for both test periods, but delivered more water than required to satisfy the assumed makeup requirement. The third release scheme was generally the most efficient of the three schemes tested.
\n
Although inherent modeling errors exist in all the simulated data, the accuracy of the estimated routed reservoir releases at the downstream sites is considered good.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7985","usgsCitation":"Armbruster, J.T., 1979, Flow routing in the Susquehanna River Basin: Part III -- Routing reservoir releases in the Tioga and Chemung rivers system, Pennsylvania, and New York, 1977: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 79-85, v, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7985.","productDescription":"v, 34 p.","numberOfPages":"43","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":134595,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri7985.jpg"},{"id":310279,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1979/0085/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New York, Pennsylvania","otherGeospatial":"Chemung River, Tioga River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.5030517578125,\n              41.176586696571015\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.5030517578125,\n              42.374778361114195\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.74523925781249,\n              42.374778361114195\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.74523925781249,\n              41.176586696571015\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.5030517578125,\n              41.176586696571015\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e488de4b07f02db51dabb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Armbruster, Jeffrey T.","contributorId":37707,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Armbruster","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":229970,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

An additional objective was the collection of continuous streamflow and temperature data at selected sites for development of a thermal model for use as a guide in design and management of a small reservoir. The quantity of surface water during low-flow varies considerably throughout the basin. Streamflow during periods of drought is groundwater discharging through numerous springs and seeps. The average 3-day, 20-year low-flow of the six study sites range from 0.1 to 2.2 cubic feet per second. Seepage investigations in October 1976 show that as much as 4.4 cubic feet per second are lost from the Sulphur Fork Red River within a reach of 1.7 miles between river mile 30.8 and 29.1. Seepage investigations in July 1977 show that as much as 3.7 cubic feet per second are gained in the Sulphur Fork Red River within a reach of 0.8 miles between river mile 42.6 and 41.8. Measured discharges from the 12 major springs in the basin ranged from less than 1 to 1660 gallons per minute during low-flow. Water quality of streams varies in time and space. Specific conductance ranged from 200 to 1,800 micromhos per centimeter at 25O centigrade during the 1976 seepage investigation on the Sulphur Fork Red River. During the two-year study the specific conductance of water from the springs ranged from 230 to 675 micromhos per centimeter at 25O centigrade.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/wri7977","usgsCitation":"Robbins, C.H., 1979, Low-flow hydrology of the Sulphur Fork Red River basin, Robertson County, north-central Tennessee: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 79-77, 67 P., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7977.","productDescription":"67 P.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":3759,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/wri79-0077/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":123826,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri_79_77.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7fe4b07f02db648787","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robbins, Clarence H.","contributorId":44159,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robbins","given":"Clarence","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":230204,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
