Scholl and Hopkins (1969) report that a sedimentary basin underlies the offshore area. More recent data, which form the basis of part of this report, show the basin is deepest beneath Norton Sound; also, the basin has sufficient depth and areal extent that the basin may be a target for development of hydrocarbon resources after Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Lease Sale 57. As shown by the means for ultimate and proximate analyses small differences exist between the two sets of data, only the moisture content and oxygen are significantly different. The forms of sulfur and heat of combustion are also similar. The means for the major and minor oxides in ash are similar for SiO<sub>2</sub>, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, CaO, MgO, K<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> and TiO<sub>2</sub>. Na<sub>2</sub>O is significantly lower and Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> and MnO higher in the analyses of the 617 samples of this report. This study represents a broadscale inventory of total chemical composition of the surficial materials of the Northern Great Plains coal region (western North and South Dakota, eastern Montana, and northeastern Wyoming); data are given for 41 elements in A and C soil horizons. \r\n\r\nAn unbalanced, nested, analysis-of-variance design was used to quantify variation in total content of elements between glaciated and unglaciated terrains, for four increasingly smaller geographic scales, and to quantify variation due to sample preparation and analysis. From this statistical study, reliable maps on a regional basis (>100 km) were prepared for C, K, and Rb in A and C soil horizons; for N a, Si, Th, D, and Zn in A-horizon soil; and for As, Ca, Ge, and Mg in C-horizon soil. The distribution of variance components for the remaining 29 elements did not permit the construction of reliable maps. Therefore, a baseline value for each of these elements is given as a measure of the total element concentration in the soils of the Northern Great Plains coal region. The baseline is expressed as the 95-percent range in concentration to be expected in samples of natural soils.\r\n\r\nPART B: A reconnaissance study of total concentrations of 38 elements in samples of soils (0-40 cm deep, composite) from the Bighorn and Wind River Basins of Montana and Wyoming indicates that the geographic variation for most elements occurs locally (5 km or less). However, in the Bighorn Basin, Zn exhibits significant regional variation (between geologic units); and in the Wind River Basin, AI, Cr, K, Mn, Mo, Ni, U, and V exhibit similar variation. For the remaining elements, the lack of regional variation suggests that a single summary statistic can be used to estimate a baseline value that reflects the range in concentration to be expected in samples of soils in each basin. The concentrations of most of these elements in both basins are not much different from those measured independently in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming or in the Western United States. In addition, data from an analysis of variance provide an estimate of the number of random samples within an area of specified size (10 km square, approximately a township) that are needed to prepare a reliable map of total element concentration in soils for each of the elements in each of the basins.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Measurements of thermal gradient in the upper few tens of meters generally are sufficient to outline the major anomalies, but it is always desirable to combine these gradients with reliable estimates of thermal conductivity to provide data on the energy flux and to constrain models for the heat sources responsible for the observed, near-surface thermal anomalies. The major problems associated with heat-flow measurements in the geothermal exploration mode are concerned with the economics of casing and/or grouting holes, the repeated site visits necessary to obtain equilibrium temperature values, the possible legal liability associated with the disturbance of underground aquifers, the surface hazards presented by pipes protruding from the ground, and the security problems associated with leaving cased holes open for periods of weeks to months. \r\n\r\nWe have developed a technique which provides reliable 'real-time' determinations of temperature, thermal conductivity, and hence, of heat flow during the drilling operation in unconsolidated sediments. A combined temperature, gradient, and thermal conductivity experiment can be carried out, by driving a thin probe through the bit about 1.5 meters into the formation in the time that would otherwise be required for a coring trip. Two or three such experiments over the depth range of, say, 50 to 150 meters provide a high-quality heat-flow determination at costs comparable to those associated with a standard cased 'gradient hole' to comparable depths. The hole can be backfilled and abandoned upon cessation of drilling, thereby eliminating the need for casing, grouting, or repeated site visits.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79593","usgsCitation":"Sass, J., Kennelly, J., Wendt, W., Moses, T., and Ziagos, J., 1979, In situ determination of heat flow in unconsolidated sediments: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-593, v, 71 p., 4 sheets :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79593.","productDescription":"v, 71 p., 4 sheets :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160335,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0593/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59576,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0593/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f41ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sass, J.H.","contributorId":70749,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sass","given":"J.H.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":204162,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kennelly, J.P.","contributorId":16051,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kennelly","given":"J.P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wendt, W.E.","contributorId":60248,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wendt","given":"W.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Moses, T.H.","contributorId":24344,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moses","given":"T.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204160,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Ziagos, J.P.","contributorId":77931,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ziagos","given":"J.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204163,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The line begins in Paleozoic and Mesozoic cover rocks near Riyadh on the Arabian Platform, leads southwesterly across three major Precambrian tectonic provinces, traverses Cenozoic rocks of the coastal plain near Jizan (Tihamat Asir), and terminates at the outer edge of the Farasan Bank in the southern Red Sea. More than 500 surveyed recording sites were occupied, including 19 in the Farasan Islands. Six shot points were used--five on land, with charges placed mostly below water table in drill holes, and one at sea, with charges placed on the sea floor and fired from a ship. The total charge consumed was slightly in excess of 61 metric tons in 21 discrete firings. \r\n\r\nSeismic energy was recorded by means of a set of 100 newly developed portable seismic stations. Each station consists of a standard 2-Hz vertical geophone coupled to a self-contained analog recording instrument equipped with a magnetic-tape cassette. The stations were deployed in groups of 20 by five observer teams, each generally consisting of two scientist-technicians and a surveyor-guide. On the day prior to deployment, the instruments were calibrated and programmed for automatic operation by means of a specially designed device called a hand-held tester. At each of ten pre-selected recording time windows on a designated firing day, the instruments were programmed to turn on, stabilize, record internal calibration signals, record the seismic signals at three levels of amplification, and then deactivate. After the final window in the firing sequence, all instruments were retrieved and their data tapes removed for processing. A specially designed, field tape- dubbing system was utilized at shot point camps to organize and edit data recorded on the cassette tapes. The main functions of this system are to concatenate all data from each shot on any given day onto a single shot tape, and to provide hard copy for monitoring recorder performance so that any problems can be corrected prior to the next deployment. \r\n\r\nComposite digital record sections were produced from the dubbed tapes for each shot point by a portable processing and plotting system. The heart of this system is a DEC PDP 11VO3 computer, which controls a cassette playback unit identical to those used in the recorders and dubbers, a set of discriminators, a time-code translator, a digitizer, and a digital plotter. The system was used to maintain various informational data sets and to produce tabulations and listings of various sorts during the field operations, in addition to its main task of producing digital record sections. \r\n\r\nTwo master clocks, both set to time signals broadcast by the British Broadcasting Corporation, provided absolute time for the recording operations. One was located on the ship and the other was stationed at a base camp on the mainland. The land-based master clock was used to set three additional master clocks located at the other active shot points a few days in advance of each firing, and these clocks were then used to set the internal clocks in the portable seismic stations via the hand-held tester. A master clock signal was also linked to the firing system at each shot point for determination of the absolute shot instant. \r\n\r\nIt is possible to construct a generalized crustal model from examination of the six shot point composite record sections obtained in the field. Such a model rests upon a number of simplifying assumptions and will almost certainly be modified at a later stage of interpretation. The main assumptions are that the crust consists of two homogeneous isotropic layers having no velocity inversion,, that the Mohorovicic discontinuity is sharp, and that effects of surface inhomogeneities and elevation changes can be ignored. The main characteristics of the tentative model are the following: \r\n\r\n(1) The thickness of th","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791568","usgsCitation":"Blank, H.R., Healy, J.H., Roller, J., Lamson, R., Fisher, F., McClearn, R., and Allen, S., 1979, Seismic refraction profile, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: field operations, instrumentation, and initial results: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1568, ii, 52 p. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791568.","productDescription":"ii, 52 p. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":163371,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1568/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59593,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1568/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":59594,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1568/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":59595,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1568/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":59596,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1568/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":59597,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1568/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":59598,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1568/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":59599,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1568/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb25f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blank, H. This record provides data concerning faunal changes in the Upper Arm, and also permits reconstruction of fish sizes and growth rates based upon scale remains. Four tables are presented that provide data on sample numbers and their frequency of occurrence and identification of skeletal and scale remains, and the reconstructed lengths and weights of Tule perch (<i>Hysterocarpus traski</i> Gibbons) based upon remains of the scales of this species. A fifth table presents the mean reconstructed standard lengths and mean ages in years B.P. for slugs 1 through 24, 0-18.3 m. These data provide a unique data base for examination of paleoecologic and paleoclimatic trends in the North Coast Range of California through the Holocene and late Pleistocene. The record augments similar paleoecologic and paleoclimatic trends reconstructed from Core 6 and 7, taken in the Highlands and Oaks Arms of Clear Lake, respectively.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791148","usgsCitation":"Casteel, R.W., Williams, J., Throckmorton, C., Sims, J., and Adam, D., 1979, Fish remains from core 8, Clear Lake, Lake County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1148, ii, 98 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791148.","productDescription":"ii, 98 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":424211,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1148/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":163274,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1148/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Lake County","otherGeospatial":"Clear Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.9894278536758,\n              39.14131413814653\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.9894278536758,\n              38.93010608959281\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.61039953336348,\n              38.93010608959281\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.61039953336348,\n              39.14131413814653\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.9894278536758,\n              39.14131413814653\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae2e4b07f02db688b1e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Casteel, Richard W.","contributorId":28241,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Casteel","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204641,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Williams, J.H.","contributorId":29482,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"J.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204642,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Throckmorton, C.K.","contributorId":67894,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Throckmorton","given":"C.K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204643,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Sims, J.D.","contributorId":9230,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sims","given":"J.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204639,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Adam, D.P.","contributorId":14815,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Adam","given":"D.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

After fault movement had ceased, much of the carbonate fault breccia, here called calcibreccia, lay loose on the resulting surface of tectonic denudation. Before this unconsolidated calcibreccia could be removed by erosion, it was buried beneath a cover of Tertiary volcanic rocks: the Wapiti Formation, composed of volcanic breccia, poorly sorted volcanic breccia mudflows, and lava flows, and clearly shown in many places by inter lensing and intermixing of the calcibreccia with basal volcanic rocks. As the weight of volcanic overburden increased, the unstable water-saturated calcibreccia became mobile and semifluid and was injected upward as dikes into the overlying volcanic rocks and to a lesser extent into rocks of the upper plate. In some places the lowermost part of the volcanic overburden appears to have flowed with the calcibreccia to form dike like bodies of mixed volcanic rock and calcibreccia. One calcibreccia dike even contains carbonized wood, presumably incorporated into unconsolidated calcibreccia on the surface of tectonic denudation and covered by volcanic rocks before moving upward with the dike. Angular xenoliths of Precambrian rocks, enclosed in another calcibreccia dike and in an adjoining dikelike mass of volcanic rock as well, are believed to have been torn from the walls of a vent and incorporated into the basal part of the Wapiti Formation overlying the clastic carbonate rock on the fault surface. Subsequently, some of these xenoliths were incorporated into the calcibreccia during the process of dike intrusion. \r\n\r\nThroughout the Heart Mountain fault area, the basal part of the upper-plate blocks or masses are brecciated, irrespective of the size of the blocks, more intensely at the base and in places extending upward for several tens of meters. North of Republic Mountain a small 25-m-high upper-plate mass, brecciated to some degree throughout, apparently moved some distance along the Heart Mountain fault as brecciated rock. Calcibreccia dikes intrude upward from the underlying 2 m of fault breccia into the lower part of the mass and also from its top into the overlying volcanic rocks; an earthquake-related mechanism most likely accounts for the observed features of this deformed body. \r\n\r\nCalcibreccia dikes are more common within the bedding-plane phase of the Heart Mountain fault but also occur in its transgressive and former land-surface phases. Evidence that the Wapiti Formation almost immediately buried loose, unconsolidated fault breccia that was the source of the dike rock strongly suggests a rapid volcanic deposition over the area in which clastic dikes occur, which is at least 75 km long. \r\n\r\nClastic dikes were injected into both the upper-plate and the volcanic rocks at about the same time, after movement on the Heart Mouuntain fault had ceased, and therefore do not indicate a fluid-flotation mechanism for the Heart Mountain fault. \r\n\r\nThe difference between contacts of the clastic dikes with both indurated and unconsolidated country rock is useful in field mapping at localities where it is difficult to distinguish between volcanic rocks of the Cathedral Cliffs and Lamar River Formations, and the Wapiti Formation. Thus, calcibreccia dikes in the Cathedral Cliffs and Lamar River Formations show a sharp contact because the country rock solidified prior to fault movement, whereas calcibreccia dikes in the Wapiti Formation in many instances show a transitional or semifluid contact because the country rock was still unconsolidated or semifluid at the time of dike injection.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1133","usgsCitation":"Pierce, W.G., 1979, Clastic dikes of Heart Mountain fault breccia, northwestern Wyoming, and their significance: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1133, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1133.","productDescription":"25 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":125134,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1133/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":60462,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1133/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d6e4b07f02db5de2cc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pierce, W.
