For the study, usable ground water is considered to be that which contains less than 10,000 mg/L dissolved solids. Using a group of geohydrologic parameters derived from or combining 21 categories of basic data, established from study and interpretation of well cuttings and geophysical logs, a series of 32 regional maps and 8 stratigraphic cross sections was constructed. For each of the eight geologic units delineated in the subsurface, the maps illustrate the distribution of waste-storage potential in terms of areal extent, depth below land surface, sand-shale geometry, and the approximate sodium chloride concentration of a unit 's nonusable ground water. In areas where the geologic units contain nonusable ground water, the depth below land surface and the thickness of potential waste-storage reservoir and reservoir-seal combinations are variable. The range in variability appears to be broad enough to meet the need for a wide choice among the geologic requirements that would normally be considered in selecting specific waste-storage sites for detailed examination. The discharge-frequency data and basin characteristics of 220 stream-gaging stations in New York and adjacent States were used in developing multiple linear regression equations for floods ranging in recurrence interval from 2 to 100 years. Separate equations were developed for northern, southeastern, and western New York. Standard errors of estimate of the 100-year flood range from 32.9 percent in the southeastern region to 42.8 percent in the western region. Drainage area is the independent variable needed in all equations; other variables needed, depending on region, are main-channel slope, storage index, and mean annual precipitation. A method is given for obtaining improved discharge-frequency relationships at gaged sites by weighting log-Pearson type III and regression estimates according to their variances. Basin characteristics, log-Pearson type III statistics, and regression and weighted estimates of the frequency-discharge relationship, are tabulated for the gaging stations used in the regression analyses. Background details of the regional geology and major structures are described in a companion report by Tysdal and Case (1979), and interpretation of the gravity data are described in a report by Case and others (1979). Preliminary reports of a paleomagnetic investigation have been reported by Hillhouse and Gromme (1977), and a more complete analysis of the results is in preparation. The aeromagnetic survey was flown at a nominal height of 300 m above the surface and flight lines were spaced about 1.7 km apart. Total magnetic field was measured by a proton-precession magnetometer. The International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF), updated to 1976, was removed, and the residual values were computer-contoured to produce the aeromagnetic map (sheet 1). Detailed aeromagnetic maps at scale 1:63,360 and a map at scale 1:250,000 have been released as Open File Reports 78-1080 through 1083 (U.S. Geological Survey, 1978).

Magnetic anomalies in the Seward-Blying Sound region are somewhat less complex than in other parts of south-central Alaska, primarily because of the huge volume of relatively nonmagnetic flysch that constitutes the Valdez and Orca Groups. Several rather isolated groups of mafic-ultramafic rocks are significantly more magnetic than the flysch assemblages, and cause distinctive patterns of magnetic anomalies. A few of the granitic plutons are magnetic, but most appear to have little or no magnetic expression.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf880D","usgsCitation":"Case, J.E., Tysdal, R.G., Hillhouse, J.W., and Grommé, C., 1979, Geologic interpretation of aeromagnetic map of the Seward and Blying Sound quadrangles, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 880, 2 Plates: 33.37 x 38.61 inches and 58.63 x 44.21 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf880D.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 33.37 x 38.61 inches and 58.63 x 44.21 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":417374,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0880-D/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":417373,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0880-D/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":183900,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0880-D/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Blying Sound Quadrangle, Seward Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -150,60 ], [ -150,61 ], [ -147,61 ], [ -147,60 ], [ -150,60 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b16e4b07f02db6a5508","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Case, J. The basins are in the northeast part of the Warrior coal field. Coal is and has been mined from the Blue Creek, Mary Lee, and and Newcastel coal beds in the Mary Lee group. Results show water-quality degradation, increased sediment yields, and increased low flow in most tributaries draining mined areas. The impact of mine drainage and sediment yield from mined subbasins on water in the main stem of Turkey Creek was small due to the alkalinity of the water in the creek and to dilution ratios that ranged from 1:30 to 1:300. Mine drainage has affected the quality of water in Crooked Creek. The dissolved solids concentration in water downstream from the mined areas was as much as 7 times greater than that in water in unmined parts of the basin. The sediment yield to Crooked Creek was lower in the mined area than in the unmined segment of the stream. The lower yield is due, in part, to the trapping of sediment in sediment ponds in the mines and in a swamp downstream from the mines. The work was done as a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission. The map shows the altitude of the water table in increments of 20 feet, with supplemental 10-foot contours. The altitude ranges from less than 580 feet at a point near Lake Michigan to more than 840 feet at a point near the western border of the county. The manhole extends through most of the 7.5-meter-thick unsaturated zone, which is composed of glacial outwash sand and gravel, and enables collection of water samples and monitoring of dynamic characteristics of the unsaturated zone during recharge experiments. The system contains instrumentation for monitoring infiltration rate, pressure-head distribution, soil-moisture content, ground-water levels, and soil gases. The 24.55-square-meter recharge basin has operated in all seasons intermittently since April 1975 and, as of April 1978, has transmitted 62 million liters of tertiary-treated effluent to the water-table aquifer. This information will be useful in planning and monitoring the development and use of the ground-water resources of southeastern Idaho.

The southeastern corner of Idaho, as described in this report, encompasses an area of about 4,000 mil in Bannock, Bear Lake, Caribou, and part of Power Counties. The popu- lation of the area in 1975, based on best estimates by the Idaho Division of Budget, Policy Planning, and Coordination (1976) was 75,200. About 80 percent of the population is in and near the city of Pocatello, which is the second largest population center in the State.

Pocatello's economy depends largely on manufacturing and industrial processing, which includes chemicalfertilizer plants. The econ- omy in the rural areas depends largely on agriculture--both dry and irrigated farming are practiced. Mining is important and expected to dominate the economy in the eastcentral part of the area in the future.

Natural resources include phosphate ore, which makes up about 35 percent of the U.S. reserves (U.S. Department of Interior and U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1977); ground water, which mostly underlies the several intermontane valleys that dissect the area; and hot springs, which indicate that geothermal energy sources may underlie part of the area. Also, current (1978) speculation is that petroleum reserves may be present in the vicinity of Bear Lake. Development of more sprink- ler-irrigated lands, increases in population, and growth of phosphate mining are expected to place stress on the ground-water resources, both in quality and quantity.

The purpose of this report is to present the results of a study whose primary objectives were (1) to provide current waterquality data representative of the water in several different aquifers (water- bearing formations) in the study area, and (2) to relate these data to natural and manmade environmental controls. The wells sampled during this study establish a quasi-network, which could be resampled in the future to document and analyze changes (if any) in ground-water quality. Based on this information, planners and water managers could better understand the causeand-effect relations controlling water quality and could better manage land and water-resource development.

The report is designed for ease of reading and presentation. It uses maps, tables, and abbreviated text to describe geology, hydrology, and ground-water quality and how they are interrelated. Some practical ways for improving water quality are discussed for the benefit of individual water users. The field data collected in making the study are contained in the Data Section of this report.

The authors gratefully acknowledge the many individual well owners, municipal officials, and private industries that provided well information and allowed access to their properties and collection of water samples. Without their help, this work could not have been done. Water samples were collected at 103 well sites. Waterlevel measurements were made at 98 of these sites during July, August, and September of 1976.

This study was made by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Idaho Department of Water Resources. A similar study is being made (1978) in north Idaho. Other studies are planned, specifically to obtain ground-water-quality data in areas where land and water-resource development is expected or accelerating.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7914","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Idaho Department of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Seitz, H.R., and Norvitch, R.F., 1979, Ground-water quality in Bannock, Bear Lake, Caribou, and part of Power counties, southeastern Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 79-14, vii, 53 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7914.","productDescription":"vii, 53 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":357118,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1979/0014/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159837,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1979/0014/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","county":"Bannock County, Bear Lake County, Caribou County, Power County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.90924072265625,\n              42.004407212963585\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.04705810546874,\n              42.004407212963585\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.04705810546874,\n              43.068887774169625\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.90924072265625,\n              43.068887774169625\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.90924072265625,\n              42.004407212963585\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa7e4b07f02db66726f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Seitz, Harold R.","contributorId":61814,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Seitz","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201909,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Norvitch, Ralph F.","contributorId":65456,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Norvitch","given":"Ralph","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201910,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Climatic and prior growth factors in regression explained 87 and 71 percent of the variance of the preditching and postditching earlywood widths, respectively, and 82 and 7O percent of the latewood widths for the same time periods. Early summer precipitation was significantly, and positively, correlated with preditching latewood growth. When pre and postditching records were merged into a single record, regression analysis explained less growth variation than when the two time periods were considered individually, implying a change in growth response following ditching. Prior to ditching, growth was most limited by dry summers which followed dry summers. After ditching, growth was less strongly linked with precipitation and more strongly linked with temperature. Regression results are compatible with the contention that growing season water levels in the proximity of the collection site have been lower since ditching.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri78136","usgsCitation":"Phipps, R.L., Ierley, D., and Baker, C., 1979, Tree rings as indicators of hydrologic change in the Great Dismal Swamp, Virginia and North Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 78-136, v, 26 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri78136.","productDescription":"v, 26 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":58024,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0136/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158887,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1978/0136/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina, Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Great Dismal Swamp","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.56303405761719,\n              36.42956988113611\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.34262084960938,\n              36.42956988113611\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.34262084960938,\n              36.76969233214548\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.56303405761719,\n              36.76969233214548\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.56303405761719,\n              36.42956988113611\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db6980d6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Phipps, Richard L.","contributorId":52122,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Phipps","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201029,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ierley, D.L.","contributorId":44584,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ierley","given":"D.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201028,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Baker, C.P.","contributorId":27896,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baker","given":"C.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201027,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Multiple-regression analyses were used to define the relationship between the flood-discharge frequency of annual peak discharges for streams draining 0.1 to 1,000 square miles and 10 climatological and physical basin characteristics. The analyses indicate that the drainage area of the basin is the most significant characteristic. Five regions having distinct flood-discharge frequency characteristics are delineated. Results of the modeling showed that the water levels would decline from less than 1 to about 4.5 feet within the study area and a maximum of 1 to 2 feet in Taylorsville in response to a pumping rate of 700 gallons per minute. Model results also show that the ground-water system would reach steady state in approximately 5 years after pumping begins. Corrections applied to water-level declines indicated by the model, to account for the effects of partial penetration of the aquifer by wells, showed that these effects, although substantial in the pumping wells, are negligible 200 feet from the wells.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri7920","usgsCitation":"Planert, M., and Tucci, P., 1979, Effects of pumping on ground-water levels near Taylorsville, Bartholomew County, Indiana: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 79-20, iv, 22 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7920.","productDescription":"iv, 22 p. Samples were analyzed for nitrogen and phosphorus species, suspended sediment, organic carbon, and pesticides. Daily mean constituent concentrations and discharges transported from the basin were computed for a gaging station near the mouth. Intermittent constituent mean concentrations and discharges were computed for storms at the six subbasin sites.
\n
The objective of this project was to assess the magnitudes and types of nonpoint discharges that affect the water quality of Pequea Creek. The project included the determination of (1) the total discharges of suspended sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus from the basin; (2) intermittent storm and base-flow discharges from six subbasin sites of varying size, geology, and land use; (3) the difference in magnitudes of the discharges during base-flow periods and storms; and (4) which variables most affect the transport of these constituents.
\n
The yields measured from the Pequea Creek basin for the period February to December 1977 were among the highest measured in the lower Susquehanna River basin. Some preliminary relations between constituents were examined using linear regression techniques on all of the data for each site. Direct runoff transported the majority of the suspended sediment, total phosphorus, and suspended organic carbon from the basin; the other constituents were transported mainly during base flow.
