In the early 1970's, human activity was responsible for the death of approximately 196 million birds per year, or about 1.9% of the wild birds of the continental United States that died each year.  Hunting was the largest direct mortality factor and accounted for about 61% of human related bird deaths.  Control or prevention of avian depredations took about 1% of the total, and all research and propagation about 0.5%.  Collision with man-made objects was the greatest indirect human cause of avian deaths. accounting for about 32% of the human related deaths.  Pollution and poisoning caused the death of about 2% of the total.  A relatively few species account for most of this mortality but continue to maintain large, harvestable populations, suggesting that the numbers of most bird species are essentially unaffected by the human activities discussed.  Other activities of man that do not necessarily result in the death of birds but rather reduce reproductive potential are more likely to have long-term effects on avian populations.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Banks, R., 1979, Human related mortality of birds in the United States: Special Scientific Report  - Wildlife 215, 16 p.","productDescription":"16 p.","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":202832,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":112200,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://wild.nrel.gov/sites/default/files/WILD_41.pdf"}],"country":"United States","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a52e4b07f02db62a61a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Banks, R.C.","contributorId":20440,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Banks","given":"R.C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":343806,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Sequential samples representing 1.35 to 5.4 mm of rain were collected from November 1971 to January 1972. At rural Petrolia the Cl:Na ratio was that of seawater for Cl concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 38 mg/l. In metropolitan Menlo Park the Cl:Na ratio in rain closely approximated that in seawater above about 0.5 mg/l Cl, but at lower Cl concentrations the ratio exceeded that in seawater, a fact attributed to the presence of anthropogenic Cl. Other constituents dissolved in Menlo Park rain (along with their concentration ranges in milligrams per liter), and believed to be derived in part from anthropogenic sources, were Ca (0.01–1.07), Mg (&lt;0.01–1.08), Pb (0.003–0.035), Zn (0.002–0.013), Mn (0.0001–0.0057), Cu (0.0008–0.0024), NO</span><sub>3</sub><span>‐N (0.02–0.54), and Br (&lt;0.01–0.12). Approximately 200 records were analyzed along 1500 km of ship track on Georges Bank, northwest Atlantic Ocean, to obtain regional sediment velocity distribution to a depth of 1.4 km below sea level. This technique provides nearly continuous coverage of refraction velocities and vertical velocity gradients. Because of the length of the hydrophone cable and the vertical velocity gradients, the technique is applicable only to the Continental Shelf and the shallower parts of the Continental Slope in water depths less than 300 m. Sediment diagenesis, the influence of overburden pressure on compaction, lithology, density, and porosity are inferred from these data. </p>\n<br/>\n<p>Velocities of the sediment near the water‐sediment interface range from less than 1500 m/sec on the north edge of Georges Bank to 1830 m/sec for glacial deposits in the northcentral part of the bank. Velocity gradients in the upper 400 m range from 1.0km/sec/km(sec<sup>−1</sup>) on the south edge of the bank to 1.7sec<sup>−1</sup> on the north. Minimum gradients of 0.8sec<sup>−1</sup> were observed south of Nantucket Island. Velocities and velocity gradients are explained in relation to physical properties of the Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Pleistocene sediments. Isovelocity contours at 100-m/sec intervals are nearly horizontal in the upper 400 m. Isovelocity contours at greater depths show a greater difference from a mean depth because of the greater structural and lithological variation. Bottom densities inferred from the velocities range from 1.7 to 1.9g/cm<sup>3</sup> and porosities range from 48 to 62 percent. The most significant factor controlling velocity distribution on Georges Bank is overburden pressure and resulting compaction. Characteristic features in the tree-ring record indicative of disturbance include: (1) the occurrence of reaction wood, (2) abrupt changes in growth rate, (3) age of scars caused by avalanche impact, (4) age of trees in reforested tracks, and (5) examination of a “new leader.”</p><p>This study was conducted at the town of Ophir, a small community in southwestern Colorado with a severe snow avalanche hazard. Historical records indicate that snow avalanches reached the town, or its vicinity, four times during this century (1918, 1951, 1958, and 1959). Tree-ring analysis substantiated this record in part and produced evidence of at least one additional event (middle to late 1880s). From this combined information, the recurrence interval for major snow avalanches capable of endangering the town is thought to be at least as frequent as once in 20 yr. The limitations of tree-ring analysis encountered in this study are also discussed.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"GSA","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<773:TDOSAF>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Carrara, P.E., 1979, The determination of snow avalanche frequency through tree-ring analysis and historical records at Ophir, Colorado: GSA Bulletin, v. 90, no. 8, p. 773-780, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<773:TDOSAF>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"773","endPage":"780","costCenters":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":374496,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Ophir","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -108.094482421875,\n              37.64794668685352\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.61932373046875,\n              37.64794668685352\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.61932373046875,\n              37.99291593373803\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.094482421875,\n              37.99291593373803\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.094482421875,\n              37.64794668685352\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"90","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carrara, Paul E. pcarrara@usgs.gov","contributorId":1342,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carrara","given":"Paul","email":"pcarrara@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":788599,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Monitoring of the interaction of factors including hydrogeologic conditions, well construction, waste volumes and characteristics, and potable-water sources is desirable to assure that fresh-water resources are not being adversely affected. An effective aquifer-system monitoring program includes on-site wells located close to an injection well and open to the next-higher permeable stratum, satellite wells located hundreds to several thousands of feet from an injection well and open to the receiving aquifer, and regional wells located miles from individual injection wells and open to the receiving aquifer. An extensive aquifer-system monitoring program associated with two waste-injection facilities near Pensacola, Florida, has provided data which have aided hydrologists to understand the aquifer system's response to the injection and, accordingly, to evaluate the potential for affecting the area's fresh-water resources.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/j.1745-6584.1979.tb03318.x","usgsCitation":"Vecchioli, J., 1979, Monitoring of subsurface injection of wastes, Florida: Groundwater, v. 17, no. 3, p. 244-249, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1745-6584.1979.tb03318.x.","productDescription":"6 p. The spectra typically display well-defined bands caused by both electronic and vibrational processes in the individual mineral constituents.Electronic transitions in the iron-bearing constituent minerals produce diagnostic minima near 0.43, 0.65, 0.85, and 0.93 mu m. Vibrational transitions in clay and water-bearing mineral constituents typically produce characteristic single or multiple features over limited spectral ranges near 1.4, 1.75, 1.9, 2.2, and 2.35 mu m. The most abundant feature-producing minerals present in these rocks are hematite, goethite, and alunite, while others frequently present are jarosite, kaolinite, potassium micas, pyrophyllite, montmorillonite, diaspore, and gypsum.This study shows that visible-near infrared spectrometry is a reliable and rapid technique for detecting and identifying clay minerals and alunite in rocks. Because these minerals are important constituents of altered rocks, the feasibility of using the visible and near infrared for detecting altered rocks by remote-sensing techniques is indicated. Significantly, these aragonite casts are more resistant to solution than surrounding ooid aragonite. We examined the specific assumptions for this method and derived a valid goodness of fit test.  We performed this test on 45 data sets representing a cross section of banded sampled for various waterfowl species, geographic areas, banding periods, and age/sex classes.  We found that: (1) the composite dynamic method was rejected (P <0.001) in 37 of the 45 data sets (in fact, 29 were rejected at P <0.00001) and (2) recovery and harvest rates are year-specific (a critical violation of the necessary assumptions).  We conclude that the restrictive assumptions required for the composite dynamic method to produce valid estimates of mortality rates are not met in waterfowl data.  Also we demonstrate that even when the required assumptions are met, the method produces very biased estimates of age-specific mortality rates.  We believe the composite dynamic method should not be used in the analysis of waterfowl banding data.  Furthermore, the composite dynamic method does not provide valid evidence for age-specific mortality rates in waterfowl.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Wildlife Management","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Society","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.2307/3800344","usgsCitation":"Burnham, K.P., and Anderson, D.R., 1979, The composite dynamic method as evidence for age-specific waterfowl mortality: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 43, no. 2, p. 356-366, https://doi.org/10.2307/3800344.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"356","endPage":"366","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":291998,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":291997,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.2307/3800344"}],"volume":"43","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53eb2a90e4b0461e44764ad3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burnham, Kenneth P.","contributorId":95025,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burnham","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":189,"text":"Colorado Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":497888,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Anderson, David R.","contributorId":92722,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderson","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":497887,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Average values for feather characters generally increased as the birds advanced from yearlings to adults. Black-white surface area of greater secondary covert 2 was the single most reliable aging character identified during the study. The error rate was lowest in females (3%) when discriminant functions were used with measurements of primary 1 weight and black-white area of greater secondary covert 2 and in males (9%) when the functions were used with black-white area of greater secondary coverts 1, 2, and 3. Many data have been collected and published relating pair counts to habitat use and water conditions (e.g., Evans and Black 1956; Smith 1971; Stoudt 1971; Stewart and Kantrud 1973, 1974). However, use of pair-count data to assess wetland use tends to emphasize individual wetland units and does not consider total wetland habitat required to sustain a breeding pair on a daily or seasonal basis. We therefore attempted to determine habitat use by individually radio marked mallards during the breeding period. This paper describes home range characteristics and habitat use of a radiomarked sample of mallard hens breeding in North Dakota during 1973-75. Under continued flooding the roots of the upland variety sylvatica have decreased rates of ethanol production, very likely a result of the progressively worsening necrosis of the root system. Few of these plants survive a full year of flooding. The swamp variety biflora survives and grows well under flooded conditions due to sequential metabolic and anatomical changes in the roots. Within a month after flooding, var. biflora initiates new roots with greatly accelerated rates of ethanol production, perhaps providing for a short-term compensatory energy source. Long-term acclimation to flooding involves a replacement of these roots and increased oxygen transport to the roots. The hypoxic conditions of the soil environment are avoided, and these rates of ethanol production are similar to those of drained plants.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"University of Chicago Press","doi":"10.1086/283414","usgsCitation":"Keeley, J.E., and Franz, E.H., 1979, Alcoholic fermentation in swamp and upland populations of Nyssa sylvatica: Temporal changes in adaptive strategy: American Naturalist, v. 113, p. 587-592, https://doi.org/10.1086/283414.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"587","endPage":"592","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130108,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"113","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db6882b8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keeley, Jon E. 0000-0002-4564-6521 jon_keeley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4564-6521","contributorId":1268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keeley","given":"Jon","email":"jon_keeley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":315301,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Franz, E.
