The problem of identifying cumulative effects is evident in the Trout Creek drainage, a tributary to the Yampa River in northwestern Colorado, where a number of mines are active and mine expansions are planned. As an evaluation tool, a model was developed and calibrated for the Trout Creek drainage and a reach of the Yampa River main stem. This model uses a series of nodes on the stream network to sum water quantity and quality through the network. The model operates on a monthly basis and uses data from water years 1976 to 1981. Output is mean monthly discharge, dissolved-solids concentration, and dissolved-solids load. Observed data are needed to initiate the model and for model calibration. Some data were extrapolated from records of nearby streamflow-gaging stations. Some nodes within the stream network were for inputs from anticipated mining and were inactive during calibrations. After calibration, these nodes were used to input water discharge at a given dissolved-solids concentration to reflect various future mine configurations. The data were statistically summarized and regression equations were developed to define relationships between water-quality variables. Where applicable, measured water-quality conditions were compared to various water-use standards. Measured concentrations of dissolved solids ranged from 145 to 12,200 milligrams per liter. Concentrations commonly exceeded 1,000 milligrams per liter and thereby present a high to very high salinity hazard for irrigation. Streamflow of the area contains predominantly sodium and sulfate ions and generally constitutes a medium to very high sodium hazard for irrigation during base flow. The water in most streams is generally adequate for livestock consumption during base flow. Concentrations of suspended sediment were extremely variable and had a direct correlation to water discharge. Measured suspended-sediment concentrations ranged from 4 to 23 ,000 milligrams per liter. Sediment-transport curves were developed for 18 of the study sites. Mean annual suspended-sediment loads were determined at five sites using the flow-duration, sediment-transport curve method. Mean annual sediment loads ranged from 1,010 to 72,7000 tons. As much as 0.34 m of vertical separation has been observed along a 5.2-km segment of the Kern Front fault, the structural barrier separating the Kern Front oil field on the west from the Kern River field to the east. Similar separations of as much as 0.15 m and 0.32 m, respectively, have also been identified along the surface traces of two en echelon faults between the Premier and Enas areas of the Poso Creek oil field and the fault that defines the southeast flank of the Premier area. The measured height changes are based on both unadjusted observed elevations and minimally constrained adjusted elevations developed from repeated control levelings referred to a relatively stable local bench mark; measurement error in the reported vertical movements probably is less than 0.05 m. Differential subsidence of at least 0.31 m (1903-68) and 0.05 m (1926/27/30/31-59) has occurred within the Kern Front and Fruitvale oil fields, respectively; subsidence of as much as 0.33 m (1903-53) and 0.19 m (1931-63) has also been measured along the north edge of the Premier area of the Poso Creek oil field and the south edge of the Main area of the Mount Poso field, respectively. Differential uplift of as much as 0.11 m and 0.13 m occurred within and immediately north of the Kern River oil field between 1903 and 1968, and similar uplift of as much as 0.19 m was measured along the north edge of the Dominion area of the Mount Poso field between 1931 and 1963. </p><p>Differential subsidence within the Kern Front and Fruitvale oil fields and along the edges of the Poso Creek and Mount Poso fields is attributable to subsurface compaction owing to fluid withdrawal; absence of subsidence within the much larger Kern River field probably is the result of either production from compaction-resistant materials or natural water flooding that has acted to preserve reservoir fluid pressures in the generally shallow producing beds. Contemporary displacements on the Kern Front fault and those along the faults within and adjacent to the Poso Creek oil field are attributable largely or entirely to changes in the subsurface stress regime associated with reservoir compaction; accumulated elastic strain of tectonic derivation conceivably contributed to the development of these displacements. The apparent uplift within and north of the Kern River oil field and along the north edge of the Mount Poso field probably is due in part to compaction of as much as 0.055 m beneath the reference bench mark; most of this apparent uplift, however, is interpreted as an effect of tectonic tilting.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Publishing Office","doi":"10.3133/pp1245","usgsCitation":"Castle, R.O., Church, J.P., Yerkes, R.F., and Manning, J.C., 1983, Historical surface deformation near Oildale, California: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1245, Report: iv, 42 p.; 2 Plates: 25.12 x 36.22 inches and 29.04 x 39.66 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1245.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 42 p.; 2 Plates: 25.12 x 36.22 inches and 29.04 x 39.66 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":104580,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4766.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"4766"},{"id":126340,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1245/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53963,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1245/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"4.09 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":340319,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1245/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":340320,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1245/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.2,\n              35.3\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.8,\n              35.3\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.8,\n              35.7\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.2,\n              35.7\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.2,\n              35.3\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62c2a7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Castle, Robert O.","contributorId":22741,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Castle","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192930,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Church, Jack P.","contributorId":6480,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Church","given":"Jack","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192928,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Yerkes, Robert F.","contributorId":64239,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Yerkes","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192931,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Manning, John C.","contributorId":10460,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Manning","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192929,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

This basin of 16,800 sq km is typical of many areas in the country. Fifty digital data sets were included in the Fox-Wolf information system. Many data sets were digitized from 1:500,000 scale maps and overlays. Some thematic data were acquired from WATSTORE and other digital data files. All data were geometrically transformed into a Lambert Conformal Conic map projection and converted to a raster format with a 1-km resolution. The result of this preliminary processing was a group of spatially registered, digital data sets in map form. Parameter evaluation, areal stratification, data merging, and data integration were used to achieve the processing objectives and to obtain analysis results for the Fox-Wolf basin. Parameter evaluation includes the visual interpretation of single data sets and digital processing to obtain new derived data sets. In the areal stratification stage, masks were used to extract from one data set all features that are within a selected area on another data set. Most processing results were obtained by data merging. Merging is the combination of two or more data sets into a composite product, in which the contribution of each original data set is apparent and can be extracted from the composite. One processing result was also obtained by data integration. Integration is the combination of two or more data sets into a single new product, from which the original data cannot be separated or calculated. The increase in New England and New York occurred primarily before the mid-1950's. Since the mid1960's, there has been no significant change in the acidity of precipitation in this region; however, sulfate concentrations have decreased and nitrate concentrations may have increased. The time of initial acidification in Southeastern Canada is not known because of a lack of historical data. In the Southeastern United States, the evaluation of whether precipitation has been acidified is complicated by meager data. The available data show that precipitation is more acidic than would be expected for sites unaffected by anthropogenic emissions. In addition, comparison of recent data with the meager historical data suggests, but does not unambiguously prove, increased acidification since the 1950's. In the Western United States, available data indicate that precipitation at individual sites has been acidified by anthropogenic emissions. The acidification generally has been attributable to localized sources, and the time of initial acidification is undefined. \r\n\r\nAcidification of lakes and streams in the Northeastern United States has occurred in a time frame compatible with the hypothesis that acidification of precipitation was the cause. The acidification of surface waters appears to have occurred before the mid- to late 1960's. In Southeastern Canada, the best-documented cases of acidified lakes point to localized sources of acidic emissions as the cause. Sparse evidence of recent regional acidification of lakes and streams exists, but evidence for acidification of precipitation as the cause is largely lacking. In the Southeastern United States, most data on acidification of surface waters are ambiguous, and in the West, most of the data reflect local conditions. However, recent analysis of a national network of remote stream sampling stations indicates that, since the mid- to late 1960's, sulfate concentrations have increased in the Southeast and the West, with a concurrent decrease in alkalinity. Additional work is needed to test the hypothesis that regional acidification of surface waters is occurring in the Southeastern and Western United States.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2249","usgsCitation":"Turk, J.T., 1983, An evaluation of trends in the acidity of precipitation and the related acidification of surface water in North America: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2249, iii, 18 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2249.","productDescription":"iii, 18 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138979,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2249/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":29404,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2249/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad8e4b07f02db6848a4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Turk, John T.","contributorId":53363,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Turk","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145880,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is concluded that the steady-state method, which combines as instantaneous injection of dye tracer with a long-duration injection of propane tracer, is an operationally feasible field technique and provides a very reliable means of determining the propane desorption coefficient in steady-channel flow. Ground magnetic measurements made in the vicinity of several known cased wells yielded total field anomalies with peak values ranging from about 1,500 to 6,000 gammas. The anomalies measured on the ground are very narrow and, considering noise due to other cultural and geologic sources, a line spacing on the order of 50 feet (15.2 m) would be necessary to locate all casings in the test area. \r\n\r\nThe mathematical model used to represent a casing was a set of magnetic pole pairs. By use of a non-linear least squares curve fitting (inversion) program, model parameters which characterize each test casing were determined. The position and strength of the uppermost pole was usually well resolved. The parameters of lower poles were not as well resolved but it appears that the results are adequate for predicting the anomalies which would be observed at aircraft altitudes. Modeling based on the parameters determined from the ground data indicates that all of the test casings could be detected by airborne measurements made at heights of 150 to 200 feet (45.7-61.0 m) above the ground, provided lines spaced as closely as 330 feet (100 m) were used and provided noise due to other cultural and geologic sources is not very large. Given the noise levels of currently available equipment and assuming very low magnetic gradients due to geologic sources, the detection range for total field measurements is greater than that for measurements of the horizontal or vertical gradient of the total intensity. \r\n\r\nElectrical self-potential anomalies were found to be associated with most of the casings where measurements were made. However, the anomalies tend to be very narrow and, in several cases, they are comparable in magnitude to other small anomalies which are not directly associated with casings. Measurements made with a terrain conductivity meter and slingram system were negative. However, from other work it is known that electrical resistivity and induced polarization measurements can be influenced significantly by the presence of a casing. \r\n\r\nIt is concluded that detailed ground magnetic surveys would be effective in locating casings within relatively small areas. It would be very costly to cover large areas with ground surveys but it appears that airborne surveys may be a cost-effective means of locating wells when the search area is on the order of a few square miles or more. Also, airborne methods could be used in some areas where access to the area on the ground is difficult or impossible.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83702","usgsCitation":"Frischknecht, F.C., Muth, L., Grette, R., Buckley, T., and Kornegay, B., 1983, Geophysical methods for locating abandoned wells: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-702, ii, 211 p. chiefly ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83702.","productDescription":"ii, 211 p. chiefly ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140173,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0702/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34601,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0702/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a85dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Frischknecht, Frank C.","contributorId":57838,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frischknecht","given":"Frank","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154736,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Muth, L.","contributorId":10035,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Muth","given":"L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154733,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Grette, R.","contributorId":13230,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grette","given":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154734,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Buckley, T.","contributorId":17222,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Buckley","given":"T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154735,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Kornegay, B.","contributorId":93041,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kornegay","given":"B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154737,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Rock units which appear on the accompanying map are indicated by an asterisk beside the map symbol in the explanation.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83185","usgsCitation":"Curtis, S., Ellersieck, I., Mayfield, C., and Tailleur, I., 1983, Reconnaissance geologic map of the De Long Mountains A1, B1, and part of C1 quadrangles, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-185, Report: 53 p.; 2 Plates: 18.67 x 54.82 inches and 32.78 x 16.87 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83185.","productDescription":"Report: 53 p.; 2 Plates: 18.67 x 54.82 inches and 32.78 x 16.87 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":419783,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0185/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":419782,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0185/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":419781,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0185/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":397477,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13928.htm"},{"id":140007,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0185/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"63360","country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"De Long Mountains A1, B1, and part of C1 quadrangles","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -162.6,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -162,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -162,\n              68.583\n            ],\n            [\n              -162.6,\n              68.583\n            ],\n            [\n              -162.6,\n              68\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a72e4b07f02db642d6d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Curtis, S.M.","contributorId":16823,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curtis","given":"S.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154414,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ellersieck, Inyo","contributorId":34914,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellersieck","given":"Inyo","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154415,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mayfield, C.F.","contributorId":95467,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mayfield","given":"C.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154417,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Tailleur, I.L.","contributorId":59027,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tailleur","given":"I.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154416,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The northern quarter is covered by Cambrian Siq Sandstone and the southeastern corner is covered by Quaternary to Tertiary basalt. The remainder of the area is underlain by trachyandesite, andesite, and metasedimentary rocks of the lower part of the Hulayfah group and \r\nrhyolitic flows and ruffs of the upper part of the Hulayfah group. These rocks have been intruded by rocks that range in composition from gabbro to alkali-feldspar granite. Two small outcrops of Tertiary rhyolite are present in the quadrangle. \r\n\r\nThe predominant structures are folds and faults initiated by the formation of the caldera in the southwestern part of the area. The northerly trending structures were reactivated during the late Precambrian Najd orogenic event and again in the Tertiary during the opening of the Red Sea. \r\n\r\nNo mineral deposits of economic importance were found in the quadrangle.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83821","usgsCitation":"Fairer, G., 1983, Reconnaissance geology of the Ishash Quadrangle, sheet 26/39C, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-821, i, 19 p. :maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83821.","productDescription":"i, 19 p. :maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143418,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0821/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36344,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0821/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36343,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0821/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a50e4b07f02db628e33","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fairer, G.
