This report summarizes the amounts and distribution of the pumpage of ground water for public supplies from four aquifers in Wisconsin. The data are for 1979 and reflect the pumpage from about 1,100 wells in 485 communities. The distribution and amount of pumpage is estimated to be similar for subsequent years.
\nOf the water pumped for public supplies, 95 percent comes from two major aquifers--the sand-and-gravel and the sandstone aquifers. Lesser amounts of water come from the Silurian dolomite, which is present onlyl in a narrow band in eastern Wisconsin, and from the generally low-yielding Precambrian basement rock that underlies the entire state.

The water was very hard (hardness greater than 180 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate). The concentrations of principal dissolved constituents varied in relation to releases from Lake Granbury and in relation to runoff from the intervening drainage area. Releases from upstream reservoirs associated with heavy rainfall during August 1978 showed a marked increase in concentrations of all dissolved constituents.
\nThermal stratification in Lake Whitney usually begins during April and persists until October. Stratification causes significant seasonal and areal variations in the concentration of dissolved oxygen, which cause variations in the concentrations of dissolved iron, dissolved manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Oxygen utilized in the decay of organic matter and bottom material is not replenished during periods of summer stagnation, and water below depths of 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 meters) usually contains less than 2.0 milligrams per liter of dissolved oxygen.
\nDuring summer stagnation, reducing conditions result in the dissolution of iron and manganese from the bottom deposits in the lake. At site AC, a deep site near Whitney Darn, dissolved iron concentrations in water near the bottom during summer stagnation ranged from 90 to 400 micrograms per liter and averaged about 195 micrograms per liter. Dissolved manganese concentrations ranged from 240 to 2,100 micrograms per liter and averaged about 1,400 micrograms per liter. During winter circulation and in water near the surface during summer stagnation, both iron and manganese concentrations averaged less than 40 micrograms per liter.
\nThe concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus are greatest during summer stagnation in water near the bottom at deep sites. At site A c during the summer, the concentration of total inorganic nitrogen near the bottom averaged 1.3 milligrams per liter and the concentration of total phosphorus near the bottom averaged 0.28 milligram per liter. During the entire year, the concentration of both these constituents in water near the surface averaged less than 0.05 milligram per liter, with the exception of site P12.
\nSeasonal temperature variations and variations in the concentration of dissolved oxygen result in dissolved iron, dissolved manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus being recycled within the lake; however, no significant accumulations of these constituents were detected.

Derivative, wavelength-filtered, and trend maps were compiled to aid in properly locating major geophysical trends corresponding to faults, folds, and lithologic boundaries. The anomaly maps indicate that Paradox Basin is characterized by a heterogeneous Precambrian basement, essentially a metamorphic complex of gneisses and schist intruded by granitic rocks and mafic to ultramafic bodies. Interpreted Precambrian structures trend predominantly northwest and northeast although east-west trending features are evident. Prominent gravity lows define the salt anticlines. Structural and lithologic trends in the Gibson Dome area are closely examined. Of greatest interest is a series of circular magnetic highs trending west-northwest into the Gibson Dome area. A synthesis of stratigraphic variations in mineral species and diversity in Morrison sandstones reveals an increasing upward igneous component, characterized by euhedral zircon and subhedral apatite. Complementing this trend, the predominantly well-rounded assemblage of the Recapture Member changes to a mixed assemblage of rounded and angular grains in the Westwater Canyon Member. Overall, the low diversity in mineral species indicates a sedimentary, low- to medium-grade-metamorphic, and acid igneous parentage for Morrison sediments; however, post-depositional processes have played a significant role in determining the present mineralogy. \r\n\r\nThe roles that diagenesis and weathering have played in determining the present aspect of the assemblage, which is a mature garnet-zircon-apatite-tourmaline suite, cannot be overemphasized. For instance, the presence of authigenically etched to skeletal garnet and staurolite implies that entire grains have been destroyed. Comparison of cores with measured sections indicates that near-surface weathering has caused the destruction of some minerals, notably apatite, sensitive to acidic conditions. Therefore, in order to interpret the sedimentology, stratigraphic intervals in which post-depositional processes have affected the mineralogy were identified. In general, topographically higher sub-basins have deficient surface outflow unless significant spring flow occurs in the basin. Topographically lower areas adjacent to the main channel of Sweetwater Creek generally have surplus flow. Major flow surpluses were associated with areas in which the majority of flow originated at a spring. Unusual outflow was related to geology to hypothesize a ground-water flow network. Areas of ground-water flow up-gradient of large springs were hypothesized as likely areas for significant ground-water reservoirs. A water budget study indicated that during dry years approximately three-fourths of the annual flow to Sweetwater Creek may be derived from ground-water sources. Streamflow records were analyzed to estimate the frequency of low-flow of Sweetwater Creek.
