The contact between the top two layers is unconformable in the south and, in some places, shows karst collapse and solution features. Karst topography grades into a more hummocky erosional surface to the north, which in turn smoothes out; the contact become conformable still further north. A period of folding, which is widespread over the outer portion of the study area and which may be related to large scale mass wasting, occurred at about the same time represented by the unconformity. Significant subsidence has occurred as late as Pleistocene. \r\n\r\nThe surface layer thins to a minimum (0 in the south) at about 525-meters water depth and then thickens again dramatically to the west, downslope. This thinning is interpreted to be due to the Loop Current, which flows from north to south in the area and which acts to block deposition and scour the bottom. \r\n\r\nDespite the fact that the margin is dominated by carbonates, usually associated with low sedimentation rates, there is widespread evidence of mass wasting affecting ancient and surficial deposits on the outer part of the upper slope. \r\n\r\nThree potential groups of geohazards identified are: \r\n\r\n1. Potential bottom failure in areas where a thin top layer overlies the karst surface. \r\n2. Potential for sliding and slumping. \r\n3. Scour due to currents which could also affect drilling and engineering activities.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83425","usgsCitation":"Doyle, L.J., 1983, Shallow structure and stratigraphy of the carbonate West Florida continental slope and their implications to sedimentation and geohazards: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-425, 21 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83425.","productDescription":"21 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141103,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0425/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36208,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0425/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f40a9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Doyle, Larry J.","contributorId":43352,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doyle","given":"Larry","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158035,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Sampling of Lake Lucien was added to the study in April 1975.

Chemical quality of the lakes varies little in comparison with chemical quality of surface runoff to the lakes, bulk precipitation, and water from the surficial aquifer. However, there is variation in water quality among the lakes; dissolved solids have averaged about twice as high in Lake Charity as in Lake Lucien. High sulfate concentrations in Lake Charity may be because of inflow of high sulfate water from the surficial aquifer in an area of citrus groves.

Surface runoff supplied about 19 percent of the direct inflow to Lakes Faith, Hope, and Charity and contributed a total of about 2,000 pounds of dissolved solids per acre of lake surface from April 1971 to June 1979, while bulk precipitation contributed about 1,170 pounds per acre. Nitrogen loading of the lakes was greater through rainfall (140 pounds per acre) than through surface runoff (average of 78 pounds per acre).

Water quality in the lakes changed during the study, generally for the better. However, an infestation of Hydrilla verticillata or elodea, in Lake Hope has interfered with recreational use of the lake. Trends in water quality in the lakes include (1) decreasing dissolved solids (and, hence, specific conductance) in Lakes Faith, Hope, and Charity, (2) decreasing total nitrogen concentration in all four lakes, (3) decreasing daily variation in dissolved oxygen concentration in Lakes Hope and Charity, (4) decreasing densities of phytoplankton in Lakes Hope and Lucien, and. (5) decreasing relative proportion of pollution-tolerant algae in Lakes Lucien, Faith, and Hope.

Results of this study could have some applicability to other lakes in central Florida where highway construction and other development could affect water quality.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8251","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Florida Department of Transportation","usgsCitation":"German, E.R., 1983, Water quality of lakes Faith, Hope, Charity, and Lucien, 1971-79, in an area of residential development and highway construction at Maitland, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 82-51, vi, 71 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8251.","productDescription":"vi, 71 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":380213,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/0051/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158664,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/0051/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","city":"Maitland","otherGeospatial":"Faith, Hope, Charity, and Lucien Lakes","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.39736175537108,\n              28.62287753035747\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.3636302947998,\n              28.62287753035747\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.3636302947998,\n              28.64276579455255\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.39736175537108,\n              28.64276579455255\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.39736175537108,\n              28.62287753035747\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a07e4b07f02db5f9977","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"German, Edward R.","contributorId":85567,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"German","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197866,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The States affected the most by these floods were Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The flooding was the result of two major storms; one in early December and the other in late December. The early December storm resulted in outstanding floods mainly in Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas. The late December storm produced major flooding mainly in southeastern Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Western Tennessee was on the fringes of both storms. Average per capita use for all offstream uses was 2,000 gpd (gallons per day) of fresh and saline water, and 1,600 gpd of fresh water; this represents a slight increase since 1975. Offstream uses include (1) public supply (domestic, public, commercial, and industrial uses), (2) rural (domestic and livestock uses), (3) irrigation, and (4) self-supplied industrial uses (including thermoelectric power). From 1975 to 1980, public supply use increased 15 percent to 34 bgd, rural use increased 14 percent to 5.6 bgd, irrigation use increased 7 percent to 150 bgd, and self-supplied industrial use increased 8 percent to 260 bgd. Within the industrial category, thermoelectric power generation increased 9 percent to 210 bgd, whereas other self-supplied industrial uses remained approximately constant at 45 bgd. Total fresh water consumed- that part of water withdrawn that is no longer available for subsequent use- by these offstream uses increased 7 percent to 100 bgd, with irrigation accounting for the largest part of water consumed, estimated at 83 bgd. Estimates of withdrawals by source indicate that from 1975 to 1980, total groundwater withdrawals increased 7 percent to 89 bgd, and total surface-water withdrawals increased 9 percent to 360 bgd. Total saline-water withdrawals increased by about 2 bgd to 72 bgd, of which 71 bgd was saline surface water. Reclaimed sewage amounted to about 0.5 bgd in 1980, an 11-percent decrease from 1975. Water used for hydroelectric power generation, an instream use, remained unchanged from 1975 at 3,300 bgd. This is in contrast to the increasing trend from 1950 to 1975. Although 1980 estimates of water use were higher than the 1975 estimates for all offstream categories, trends establishing during the periods 1970 to 1975 and 1975 to 1980 indicate a general slackening in the rate of increase of total withdrawls in comparison to the period 1965 to 1970. The lines were located between latitudes 39° and 40°10'N and longitudes 73°50' and 74° 40'W. High-resolution seismicreflection data were collected using an EG&G Uniboom (400-4000 Hz) and an ORE Mode! 1035 (3.5 kHz) subbottom profiling system in conjunction with a Klein Sidescan Sonar System (100 kHz). While the quality of the data is variable, it is virtually all usable and generally of good quality but rarely excellent. Due to equipment failure, only 880 km of 3.5 kHz and 796 km of sidescan-sonar data were recorded. Navigation was by Loran-C. and fixes were recorded at 5-minute time intervals with some gaps in the data.

Analysis of the sidescan-sonar data shows five recognizable features in the study area. Megaripples (2-3 m crestal spacing) were recorded almost exclusively on coast parallel tracklines, and were most abundant at distances of 10 to 20 km offshore. Nonlinear light and dark patches were abundant in the northern half of the study area and offshore to the south. Two groups of linear light and dark bands were observed as being clearly parallel or oblique to the bathymetric contours and were noted throughout the survey area. Trawl marks were noted on only one line near the shore, just north of Barnegat Inlet.

These observations indicate widespread, perhaps frequent, movement of the surface sands on the Inner New Jersey continental shelf. Directions of sediment transport are suggested by the orientation of the alternating light and dark bands and the ripples, assuming a parallel and/or transverse relative movement. Asymmetry of the ripples was not observed on the sidescan sonographs.

The high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles indicate three distinct types of subbottom stratigraphy in the top 20 to 40 m of sediment. Reflectors in the area north of Barnegat Inlet dip gently (<1° ) to the south-southeast. The thirty plotted reflectors are 5 to 12 m apart (vertically), are essentially parallel, and are truncated on the updip (northern) limits where they outcrop or subcrop (under a 2-4 m overburden). Truncated by erosion, they are the dominant cause of N65° east-striking topographic ridges in this offshore region. The age of the reflectors is· inferred to be Tertiary from the strike and dip, which are the same as the Tertiary beds of adjacent New Jersey.
","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr83422","usgsCitation":"McClennen, C.E., 1983, High-Resolution Seismic Profile and Sidescan-Sonar Data Collected During June 1980 Offshore New Jersey, Whitefoot Cruise 80-1: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-422, 5 p, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83422.","productDescription":"5 p","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144344,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259852,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0422/ofr1983422.pdf","text":"Report","size":"8.25 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1983-422"}],"contact":"
Coastal and Marine Geology Program
U.S. Geological Survey
384 Woods Hole Road
Woods Hole, MA 02543
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db688870","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McClennen, Charles E.","contributorId":67891,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McClennen","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161063,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A total of 35.6 million cubic yards of mudflow material was deposited in the lower Cowlitz (downstream from the Union Pacific Railroad bridge) and Columbia Rivers.

The arrival of this material at the Columbia River, during a period of the daily tidal cycle, when the flow was at a minimum or quite probably reversed and flowing upstream resulted in its deposition in an area 7 miles upstream and 2 miles downstream from the junction of the Cowlitz and Columbia Rivers. The thickness of the deposit was at a maximum near Coffin Rock, where a hole 140 feet deep was filled with 90 feet of sediment. This Jurassic intrusion displays large and systematic chemical and mineralogical zonation over a horizontal distance of 5 km. Major-element variations compare closely with Dalyls average andesite-dacite-rhyolite over an SiO2 range of 63 to 76 percent. \r\n\r\nFor various reasons it was originally thought that assimilation played a dominant role in development of the Snake Creek-Williams Canyon pluton. However, based on modeling of more recently obtained trace element and isotopic data, we have concluded that the zonation is the result of in-situ fractional crystallization, with little assimilation at the level of crystallization. \r\n\r\nThis report summarizes data available for each of the mineral species present in the zoned intrusion. Special attention has been paid to trends We present oxygen and strontium isotopic data for olivine tholeiites, evolved (that is, differentiated and (or) contaminated) lavas, rhyolites, and crustal- derived xenoliths from the Snake River Plain. These data show that the olivine tholeiites are fairly uniform in d80 (5.1 to 6.2) and 87Sr/86Sr (0.7056 to 0.7076) and reveal no correlation between these ratios. The tholeiites are considered representative of mantle-derived magmas that have not interacted significantly with crustal material or meteoric water. The evolved lavas display a wider range in d 80 (5.6 to 7.6) and 87Sr/86Sr (0.708 to 0.717) with positive correlations between these ratios in some suites but not in others. Crustal xenoliths have high and variable 8?Sr/86Sr (0.715 to 0.830) and d80 values that vary widely (6.7 to 9.2) and are a few permil greater than d80 values of the Snake River basalts. Thus, isotopic data for the evolved lavas are permissive of small degrees of contamination by crustal rocks similar to the most d80-depleted xenoliths. The d80 enrichments in some evolved lavas also are consistent with crystal fractionation processes and do not necessarily require bulk interaction with crustal rocks. Enrichment in d80 but not in 87Sr/86Sr in one suite of evolved lavas suggests that crustal contamination may not be essential to the petrogenesis of those lavas. Other suites of evolved lavas display large variations in 87Sr/86Sr that reflect at least some selective contamination with 87St. \r\n\r\nBulk solid/liquid oxygen-isotope fractionation factors (a's) calculated for the evolved lavas from Craters of the Moon National Monument are comparatively large. These a's are dependent upon the nature and proportions of phases removed by crystal fractionation; basaltic lava a's differ from latitic lava a?s in accordance with different phenocryst assemblages in these rocks. \r\n\r\nSnake River Plain rhyolites are isotopically distinct from both the analyzed crustal xenoliths and olivine tholeiites. Their origin remains poorly understood, but crustal or sub-crustal sources may be viable. In the first case, they must be derived by anatexis of material distinct from the analyzed crustal xenoliths. In the second case, they must be derived from material unlike the source for tholeiites. No cogenetic relation with the tholeiites seems likely on the basis of available data. that might relate to the variation in the chemical petrology of the pluton.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83338","usgsCitation":"Leeman, W.P., and Whelan, J.F., 1983, Oxygen and strontium isotopic studies of basaltic lavas from the Snake River plain, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-338, 35 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83338.","productDescription":"35 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143338,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0338/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37775,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0338/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db68a0dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leeman, William P.","contributorId":87142,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leeman","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160600,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Whelan, Joseph F.","contributorId":29792,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whelan","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160599,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
