The discharge contains high concentrations of radon, and the gross alpha activity and the concentration of adium-226 exceed maximum levels recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency for drinking water. Part of the discharge is diverted for space heating, bathing, and domestic use. The radioactive thermal waters at measured temperatures of about 60&deg;C are  of the sodium bicarbonate type and saturated with respect to calcium carbonate. Radium-226 in the rock and on fractured surfaces or coprecipitated with calcium carbonate probably is the principal source of radon that is dissolved in the thermal water and discharged with other gases from some wells and springs. Local surface water and shallow ground water are of the calcium bicarbonate type and exhibit low background activity. The temperature, percent sodium, and radioactivity of mixed waters adjacent to the fault zone increase with depth. Samples from most of the major hot springs in southwestern Montana have been analyzed for gross alpha and beta activity. The high level of radioactivity at Alhambra appears to be related to leaching of radioactive material from siliceous veins by ascending thermal waters and is not a normal characteristic of hot springs issuing from fractured crystalline rock in Montana.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Leonard, R., and Janzer, V.J., 1978, Natural radioactivity in geothermal waters, Alhambra Hot Springs and nearby areas, Jefferson County, Montana: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 6, no. 4, p. 529-540.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"529","endPage":"540","costCenters":[{"id":255,"text":"Energy Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266911,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266910,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1978/vol6issue4/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"18.0 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","county":"Jefferson County","otherGeospatial":"Alhambra Hot Springs","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -112.5948,45.7485 ], [ -112.5948,46.5725 ], [ -111.6586,46.5725 ], [ -111.6586,45.7485 ], [ -112.5948,45.7485 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"6","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"510e4381e4b09f303997b292","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leonard, Robert B.","contributorId":14407,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leonard","given":"Robert B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472908,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Janzer, Victor J.","contributorId":36119,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Janzer","given":"Victor","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472909,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Its population in 1970 was estimated at 535,000. Precipitation averages 47 inches per year and provides an abundant supply of water. Twenty-one inches returns to the atmosphere as evapotranspiration; the remainder flows directly to streams or percolates to the water table and discharges to Long Island Sound. Small amounts of water are exported from the basin by the New Britain Water Department, and small amounts are imported to the basin by the New Haven Water Company.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The amount of water that can be developed at a given place depends upon precipitation, variability of streamflow, hydraulic properties and areal extent of the aquifers, and hydraulic connection between the aquifers and major streams. The quality of the water is determined by the physical environment and the effects of man.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Stratified drift is the only aquifer capable of large sustained yields of water to individual wells. Yields of 64 screened wells tapping stratified drift range from 17 to 2,000 gpm (gallons per minute); their median yield is 500 gpm.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Till is widespread and generally provides only small amounts of water. Wells in till normally yield only a few hundred gallons of water daily and commonly are inadequate during dry periods. Till is generally used only as an emergency or secondary source of water.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Bedrock aquifers underlie the entire report area and include sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rock types. These aquifers supply small but reliable quantities of water to wells throughout the basin and are the chief source for many nonurban homes and farms. About 90 percent of the wells tapping bedrock yield at least 2 pgm, and much larger yields are occasionally reported. Maximum well yields of 305 gpm for sedimentary, 75 gpm for igneous, and 200 gpm for metamorphic bedrock have been reported.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Water potentially available from stratified drift was estimated on the basis of hydraulic characteristics of the aquifers and evaluation of natural and induced recharge. Long-term yields estimated for 14 favorable areas of stratified drift range from 0.8 to 16.1 mgd (million gallons per day), but detailed verification studies are needed before development.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The natural quality of water in the report area is good. The water is generally low in dissolved solid and is soft to moderately hard. Surface water is less mineralized than ground water, especially during high flow when it is primarily surface runoff. A median dissolved-solids concentration of 117 mg/l (milligrams per liter) and a median hardness of 58 mg/l was determined for water samples collected at 20 sites on 16 streams during high flow. A median dissolved-solids concentration of 146 mg/l and a median hardness of 82 mg/l was determined for samples collected at the same sites during low flow. In contrast water from 130 wells had a median dissolved-solids concentration of 188 mg/l and a median hardness of 110 mg/l.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Iron and manganese occur in objectionable concentrations in parts of the report area, particularly in water from streams draining swamps and in water from aquifers rich in iron- and manganese-bearing minerals. Concentrations of iron in excess of 0.3 mg/l were found in 40 percent of the high-streamflow samples, 59 percent of the low-streamflow samples and 20 percent of the ground-water samples.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Human activities have modified the quality of water in much of the basin. Wide and erratic fluctuations in concentration of dissolved solids in streams, high bacterial content of the Quinnipiac River, and locally high nitrate and chloride concentrations in ground water are evidence of man's influence. Streams, wetlands, and some aquifers along the southern boundary of the basin contain salty water. Overpumping has caused extensive saltwater intrusion in aquifers in the southern and eastern parts of New Haven.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The total amount of fresh water used in the area during 1970 is estimated at 35,710 million gallons, or 183 gallons per day per capita. Public water-supply systems met the domestic requirements of about 90 percent of the population; all the systems supplied water that met the drinking water standards of the Connecticut Department of Health.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Connecituct Department of Environmental Protection","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection","usgsCitation":"Mazzaferro, D.L., Handman, E.H., and Thomas, M.P., 1978, Water resources inventory of Connecticut Part 8: Quinnipiac River basin: Connecticut Water Resources Bulletin 27, Report: v, 86 p.; 5 Plates: 31.07 x 54.28 inches and smaller.","productDescription":"Report: v, 86 p.; 5 Plates: 31.07 x 54.28 inches and smaller","numberOfPages":"96","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":258819,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0027/report.pdf","size":"33897","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258820,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0027/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":286041,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70038340/plate-c.pdf"},{"id":286042,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70038340/plate-d.pdf"},{"id":286043,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70038340/plate-e.pdf"},{"id":286039,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70038340/plate-a.pdf"},{"id":286040,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70038340/plate-b.pdf"}],"scale":"48000","country":"United States","state":"Connecticut","otherGeospatial":"Quinnipiac River Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -73.083333,41.183333 ], [ -73.083333,41.708333 ], [ -72.683333,41.708333 ], [ -72.683333,41.183333 ], [ -73.083333,41.183333 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bcb7ee4b08c986b32d69c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mazzaferro, David L.","contributorId":89539,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mazzaferro","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":463907,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Handman, Elinor H.","contributorId":31748,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Handman","given":"Elinor","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":463906,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Thomas, Mendall P.","contributorId":104314,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thomas","given":"Mendall","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":463908,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Semimonthly from May to September and monthly from September to February, calcium and phosphorus were determined in eviscerated bodies and fat-free skeletons by neutron activation analysis. Body weight gains, survival rate, and feed conversion rates were determined for the May to September period. Fish on the three diet regimens showed no significant difference in weight gain, feed conversion, or survival. As plans for more effective management of the coastal zone evolved, it soon became apparent that improved maps and charts of these areas were needed. This handbook was prepared with the requirements of the entire coastal community in mind, giving greatest attention to the needs of coastal zone managers and planners at the State and local levels. Its principal objective is to provide general information and guidance; it is neither a textbook nor a technical manual, but rather a primer on coastal mapping. This handbook should help planners and managers of coastal programs to determine their mapping requirements, select the best maps and charts for their particular needs, and to deal effectively with personnel who gather data and prepare maps. The sections on \"Sources of Assistance and Advice\" and \"Product and Data Sources\" should be especially useful to all involved in mapping the coastal zone. Brief summaries of the mapping efforts of several State coastal zone management programs are included. \"Future outlook\" discusses anticipated progress and changes in mapping procedures and techniques. Illustrations are inserted, where appropriate, to illustrate the products and equipment discussed. Because of printing restrictions, the colors in map illustrations may vary from those in the original publication. The appendixes include substantial material which also should be of interest. In addition a glossary and an index are included to provide easy and quick access to the terms and concepts used in the text. For those interested in more technical detail than is provided in this handbook, the \"Selected references\" will be useful. Also, the publications of the professional societies listed in appendix 4 will provide technical information in detail.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 1978, Coastal mapping handbook, viii, 200 p.","productDescription":"viii, 200 p.","numberOfPages":"210","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":259579,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f785e4b0c8380cd4cb77","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Ellis, Melvin Y.","contributorId":54456,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellis","given":"Melvin","email":"","middleInitial":"Y.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":749900,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":529185,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration","contributorId":128155,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration","id":529186,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The proper development and protection of our water resources, however, will depend on adequate data on the quantity and quality of our water. Much data have already been collected by hundreds of agencies, and much more are continuously being collected. Even though a vast amount of data is being collected, the potential user faces a bewildering problem in trying to determine if the specific information he needs has been collected and where it is available. To help solve these problems of matching user needs to available data, NAWDEX the National Water Data Exchange has been established.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/70039586","usgsCitation":"Edwards, M.D., 1978, NAWDEX: key to finding water data: Monograph, 15 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70039586.","productDescription":"15 p.","numberOfPages":"15","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261107,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70039586/report.pdf"},{"id":261108,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70039586/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a6138e4b0c8380cd71857","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Edwards, Melvin D.","contributorId":94305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edwards","given":"Melvin","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":466517,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The past year also marked the beginning of a third and challenging mission, drawing upon the Survey's scientific talents, to explore and assess the petroleum potential of a vast 37,000 square miles expanse of Alaska's North Slope known as the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. The first two missions require detailed and continuing investigations of the location, character, and extent of the Nation's land, water, mineral, and energy resources; a continuing National Topographic Mapping Program; the classification of Federal lands for mineral and waterpower potential; and a continuing program of technical review, safety inspection and royalty auditing of the operations of private parties engaged in mineral development on Federal lands to assure standards of safety, environmental protection, resource conservation, and a fair market return to the public for the development of their resources.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/70039031","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1978, United States Geological Survey Yearbook, fiscal year 1977: Yearbook, v, 229 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70039031.","productDescription":"v, 229 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261267,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70039031/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"91.34 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":261268,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70039031/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bbc8fe4b08c986b328ce3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":535200,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Bayer 73 was extracted from acidified water samples with chloroform and then hydrolyzed to 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline (CNA) with either acid or base. The CNA was diazotized with sodium nitrite, and an azo dye was formed with either <i>N</i>-( 1-naphthyl) ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (after acid hydrolysis) or 1-naphthol (after base hydrolysis). There was no interference from the lampricide 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM) in either method. Standard curves were prepared with untreated water to compensate for interfering substances that occurred naturally in some streams. The methods were sensitive to about 0.005 mg/L (ppm). Time required for analysis of a sample ranged from 25 min to 1 h.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","publisherLocation":"Ottawa, Ontario","doi":"10.1139/f78-196","collaboration":"None","usgsCitation":"Dawson, V.K., Harman, P., Schultz, D., and Allen, J.L., 1978, Rapid method for determining concentrations of Bayer 73 in water during lampricide treatments: Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, v. 35, no. 9, p. 1262-1265, https://doi.org/10.1139/f78-196.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"1262","endPage":"1265","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":259634,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259621,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1139/f78-196","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"volume":"35","issue":"9","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a94efe4b0c8380cd816f2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dawson, V. Maryland's mountain stations are now reporting through Region IV (NASS 2:184-187). Region V welcomes three new stations this year: Colesville and Sandy Spring in the Maryland Piedmont and Long Beach on the coast of North Carolina. The Round Bay and Bellevue Stations were not operated in 1976 and banding was too sporadic at Irish Grove Wildlife Sanctuary for their contributions to be included in this summary.</p><p>Station activities for 1976 are summarized in Table 1. Banding effort (net-hours] was the lowest since 1970, but the 20,560 birds banded in Region V were only 3 percent below the 8 year average of 21,138.
