In 1971-72, wings were sampled again to compare levels of organochlorine insecticide residues with those of the previous survey and to delineate differences in residue values between adult and immature woodcock. Three additional states, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Vermont, and one additional organochlorine insecticide, heptachlor epoxide, were included in the second survey. Residue levels in the 1971-72 wings showed the same pattern as that observed in 1970-71: organochlorine insecticide residues were highest in wings collected in the southern states and in New Jersey; residues were lowest in samplings taken in the northern and midwestern states. Residues of DDT, TDE, and dieldrin in the 1971-72 wings were slightly lower than those found in 1970-71. DDE, PCB, and mirex residues were significantly lower (P<0.05, P<0.01, and P<0.01, respectively) in 1971-72. Wings of immature woodcock in Louisiana had significantly lower (P <0.05) mirex residues than did adult wings.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pesticides Monitoring Journal","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"McLane, M.A., Dustman, E.H., Clark, E., and Hughes, D., 1978, Organochlorine insecticide and polychlorinated biphenyl residues in woodcock wings, 1971-72: Pesticides Monitoring Journal, v. 12, no. 1, p. 22-25.","productDescription":"22-25","startPage":"22","endPage":"25","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":269763,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/26096570"},{"id":199427,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"12","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae5e4b07f02db68a5f1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McLane, M. Although Bond (1956) states that they breed in the Greater Antilles, nests are known only from Cuba, St. Croix (Bond 1956), and Jamaica (Lack 1976), and Bond considered the bird rare in Puerto Rico. Other students of Puerto Rican ornithology have suggested that the species is \"uncommon\" (Leopold 1963), \"rare\" (McCandless 1958), or a regular migrant or resident species (Wetmore 1916). Although no nests have been reported, most authors suspect that it breeds, and agree that it frequents coastal areas in western or southwestern Puerto Rico, primarily from May to September (Wetmore 1916, Danforth 1936, McCandless 1958, Leopold 1963, Biaggi 1970). From 1968 to 1971 we conducted linear strip censuses along pre-selected routes throughout the island, counting all birds heard or seen (Kepler and Kepler 1970); data we obtained on the Yellow-billed Cuckoo helped clarify and amplify existing information on its distribution and status.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Society","usgsCitation":"Kepler, C.B., and Kepler, A.K., 1978, Status and nesting of the yellow-billed cuckoo in Puerto Rico: The Auk, v. 95, no. 2, p. 417-419.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"417","endPage":"419","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":196565,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":341287,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/4085466"}],"volume":"95","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a83c1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kepler, Cameron B.","contributorId":27567,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kepler","given":"Cameron","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333109,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kepler, Angela K.","contributorId":105098,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kepler","given":"Angela","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":333110,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Shell thickness reductions of 9 to 15 percent were found in white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), brown pelicans (P .occidentalis), and great blue herons (Ardea herodias). DDT family compounds were found in all eggs, and mean residues ranged from 0.4 ppm in white ibis (Eudocimus albus) to 23.2 ppm in great egrets (Casmerodius albus). GDDT residues were negatively correlated with shell thickness in five species; PCBs were negatively correlated in two. Residues in marine birds were generally lower and more uniform than levels in birds feeding in fresh and brackish water. DDT and dieldrin residues were higher in eggs from colonies near agricultural areas where these insecticides were heavily used; higher PCB residues were consistently associated with urban and industrial areas. Populations of five species have declined and deserve continued study: brown pelican, reddish egret (Dichromanassa rufescens), white-faced ibis (Plegadis chihi), laughing gull (Larus atricilla), and Forster's tern (Sterna forsteri). DDE was found in 100% of the clutches, PCBs in 89%, and dieldrin in 78%. Eggshell thickness was inversely correlated with concentrations of DDE, DDD, and dieldrin residues. Six of the 18 clutches had mean DDE residues above 5 ppm, and eggshell thickness in these six clutches was significantly less (P<0.001) than in the other 12 clutches. The owls produced 1.7 young per active nest in 1973. This rate is slightly below the reproductive rate needed to maintain a stable population. An estimated 15% of the population carried concentrations of organochlorine residues that may have been detrimental to their reproduction. Passerine birds, taken extensively as food by a small proportion of the population, are believed to have been the source of elevated concentrations of organochlorines in these barn owls.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.2307/1351649","usgsCitation":"Klaas, E., Wiemeyer, S.N., Ohlendorf, H.M., and Swineford, D.M., 1978, Organochlorine residues, eggshell thickness, and nest success in barn owls from the Chesapeake Bay: Estuaries, v. 1, no. 1, p. 46-53, https://doi.org/10.2307/1351649.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"46","endPage":"53","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197191,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland, Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Chesapeake Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -75.81282248950788,\n              39.6518719878126\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.23495435353824,\n              39.51663195064236\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.66242965888596,\n              39.2936797117751\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.75861160258926,\n              38.841477980517936\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.0792180815997,\n              38.920350258120635\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.42119832587827,\n              38.52430829549036\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.33570326480844,\n              38.231085199317135\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.10593528818404,\n              37.805915062803024\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.06853119896621,\n              37.628386334404496\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.44257209114524,\n              37.391020284490665\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.66777310020282,\n              36.74722706800088\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.29373220802378,\n              36.73438117064465\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.98915605296305,\n              36.837088131045434\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.9624388463787,\n              37.101776603121436\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.96778228769608,\n              37.29756295481282\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.85557002004245,\n              37.513522287219644\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.64717580868565,\n              37.79273654299129\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.59374139551691,\n              37.965658652485686\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.56168074761582,\n              38.33124444361815\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.73801431107218,\n              38.50289616779369\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.79679216555701,\n              38.8657802378103\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.87160034399332,\n              39.2144024982245\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.78076184160679,\n              39.433480609792724\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.75938807633915,\n              39.51597318312585\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.81282248950788,\n              39.6518719878126\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"1","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae5e4b07f02db68a6fd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Klaas, Erwin E.","contributorId":21487,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Klaas","given":"Erwin E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333827,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wiemeyer, Stanley N.","contributorId":78279,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wiemeyer","given":"Stanley","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333829,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Ohlendorf, H. Seven of the 9 sea birds are known to breed, and 2 (Blue-faced Booby and Laughing Gull) are here recorded as breeders in Puerto Rico for the first time.  The Pelecaniformes are represented by 5 species, the White-tailed Tropicbird, the 3 pan-tropical boobies, and the Magnificent Frigatebird.  The boobies all have long but annual breeding seasons, from fall through spring, showing a distinct breeding hiatus in the hot summer months, although some late-nesters may care for chicks during this period.  The Magnificent Frigatebird has the most synchronous breeding, with a laying peak from late October to early December, when 70% of the population lay eggs.  Four larids (Laughing Gull, Bridled Tern, Sooty Tern, and Brown Noddy) are summer residents vacating the island in August-September, and returning again in March-April. In general, they nest during the pelecaniform non-breeding season.  The sea birds show a great range in nest site preference, with little overlap among them.  Their diversity results from a combination of isolation, rugged cliffs, and the structural diversity of Monito Island.  Although currently one of the outstanding sea bird colonies in the West Indies, Monito is threatened, and the colonies could be lost unless they are legally protected.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Condor","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Kepler, C.B., 1978, The breeding ecology of sea birds on Monito Island, Puerto Rico: Condor, v. 80, no. 1, p. 72-87.","productDescription":"72-87","startPage":"72","endPage":"87","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":18511,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Condor/files/issues/v080n01/p0072-p0087.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":194161,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"80","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db69903b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kepler, C. The northern California population","docAbstract":"
An estimated 355± 40 pairs (95 percent C.I.) of Ospreys (<i>Pandion haliaetus carolinensis</i>) nested in the northern California survey area in 1975. Eighty-one pairs were estimated along the extreme northern coast in Del Norte and Humboldt Counties. One hundred and forty-four pairs were estimated along California's northern coast in Mendociuo, Sonoma, and Marin Counties. The northern interior region, primarily in Siskiyou, Trinity, Shasta, Lassen, and Plumas Counties, contained an estimated 130 pairs. Forty-nine percent of the interior Osprey population is associated with reservoirs that were not present in 1900. We believe more Ospreys are present in the interior now than 75 years ago because of the increase in suitable habitat; nevertheless, populations at Shasta Lake and Clair Engle Lake are now exhibiting below-normal production rates and local declines. The long-term status of the coastal population, nesting along rivers, streams, and bays, is not clear. Recent production rates from two segments of the coastal population appear to be normal, but production at Usal Creek is below normal.
","language":"English","publisher":"Northwest Science Association","usgsCitation":"Henny, C.J., Dunaway, D.J., Mallette, R.D., and Koplin, J.R., 1978, Osprey distribution, abundance, and status in western North America: I. The type locality of the species is the West Indies, but there is little evidence that birds from that area are anything but vagrants or birds imported from South America. All records of this species in the West Indies are attributable to the subspecies that occurs naturally in South America. The plate and description on which the name of the species is based seem to be of the South American form. It thus becomes clear that the South American and West Indian populations of Black-bellied Whistling-Duck must bear the name Dendrocygna autumnalis autumnalis (Linnaeus) 1758 and that Dendrocygna discolor Sclater and Salvin 1873 is a junior synonym. Dwight (1900: 298) discussed this genus with the family Paridae and stated: \"All the members of this family have only the annual moult. They are peculiar in assuming a juvenal plumage closely resembling the pale nuptial plumage which results from extreme fading of the winter dress.\" Witherby (in Witherby et al. 1938: 244) remarked that in S. europaea the summer plumage is attained by abrasion rather than by molt. Following Dwight's analysis, Bent (1948) recorded that the prenuptial molt did not occur in S. carolinensis or S. canadensis. Although Norris (1958: 246) found several females of S. pygmaea that were replacing feathers in the nuchal region in March and April, he regarded this as a regrowth of feathers lost in social interactions rather than as prealternate molt; the replacement of contour feathers \"over nearly every part of the body\" in early April by one female of that species was considered to be \"an aberrant instance of prenuptial molt.\" Norris (op. cit.) stated categorically that \"There is no prenuptial molt in Sitta pusilla.\" For most species in the genus, however, I have been unable to find any statement, even a negative one, concerning the occurrence of this molt. A statistically significant interaction was defined as greater brain cholinesterase inhibition in morsodren-fed than in clean-fed birds following pesticide dosage. The tissue residues of mercury that accumulated before significant mercury-parathion interactions occurred were higher than levels that might be expected in natural populations, but significant mercury-carbofuran interactions occurred in birds that had only accumulated 1.0 ppm liver mercury. The results indicate that indiscriminate usage of cholinesterase inhibiting pesticides are dangerous, since natural populations of fish-eating birds oftentimes contain this magnitude of mercury.","largerWorkTitle":"","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF01685815","usgsCitation":"Dieter, M.P., and Ludke, J., 1978, Studies on combined effects of organophosphates or carbamates and morsodren in birds. Immediately after parturition, female bats and litters were frozen. Five litters included at least one dead young, and these five litters contained significantly more of the PCB, Aroclor 1260, than did the 21 litters with only living young....The present study attempted to verify that Aroclor 1260 could cause stillbirths. I fed 18 of 36 pregnant big brown bats mealworms containing 6.36 ppm of Aroclor 1260 prior to birth of their litters. Both carcasses and litters of dosed females contained approximately 10 times more PCB than their respective controls, but no additional stillbirths resulted. Three of 18 control litters included dead young, whereas the comparable ratio among litters from dosed females was one of 18. Additional comparisons involving means of litter weight, adult female weight, parturition date, days in captivity, tooth wear, and percentage fat also failed to show any effect of the PCB....The association found earlier between PCB and dead young (CLARK and LAMONT 1976) was not one of cause and effect. In both studies, bats that had not been dosed showed greater PCB residues among younger females. Among control bats in the present series, females that produced dead young were significantly younger (that is, showed significantly less tooth wear) than other females. In sum, whereas dead young seemed to have been caused by greater residues, these two factors were actually independent of each other but associated with a third factor--age of the female parent bat.","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF01685862","usgsCitation":"Clark, D.R., 1978, Uptake of dietary PCB by pregnant big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) and their fetuses: Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, v. 19, no. 6, p. 707-714, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01685862.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"707","endPage":"714","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198169,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"19","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dbe4b07f02db5e07a1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Clark, D. Observations were made throughout the breeding season.  Preferred breeding habitats of Red-wings, in order of preference, were wetlands, hayfields, old fields, and pastures.  Males and females occupied old fields and wetlands first, then hayfields, and finally, pastures.     Cutting of hayfields caused territorial abandonment by both sexes within 48 h.  The apparent movement of displaced females from cut hayfields to uncut hayfields suggests that habitat fidelity of females is strong after the breeding effort has begun.       Breeding Red-wings exhibited general preferences for trees, large amounts of habitat edge, erect old vegetation, and sturdy, tall, and dense vegetation.  Vegetative forms and species, such as upland grasses, broad- and narrow-leafed monocots in wetlands, and forbs were important to the Red-wing at various times during the breeding season.  Landscape and vegetational preferences of breeding adults were easier to observe early in the breeding season (March through May) than later.  Vegetational growth and increases in the size of the breeding population probably make these preferences more difficult to detect.     Territory size was poorly correlated with landscape and vegetational characteristics in uplands but strongly correlated with broad- and narrow-leafed mono cots and vegetative height in wetlands.  Wetland territories were smaller than upland territories.  Territories increased in size during the middle and late portions of the breedi g season.  Habitat selection by the Red-winged Blackbird can best be studied by evaluating vegetative preferences throughout the breeding season.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wilson Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","collaboration":"1776_Albers.pdf","usgsCitation":"Albers, P., 1978, Habitat selection by breeding red-winged blackbirds: The Wilson Bulletin, v. 90, no. 4, p. 619-634.","productDescription":"619-634","startPage":"619","endPage":"634","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":18434,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Wilson/v090n04/p0619-p0634.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":197453,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"90","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7fe4b07f02db6486fd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Albers, P.H.","contributorId":26646,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Albers","given":"P.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":336121,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
