This program was initiated to delineate and assess geologic hazards that could be particularly detrimental to major constructions, especially nuclear reactors. Faults are of principal interest to the program because earthquakes associated with them can cause major damage in short periods of time.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Prior to 1970, very little was known about Cenozoic faulting in the eastern United States. the most abundant data were available in the western gulf Coastal Plain where oil exploration had generated a considerable amount of subsurface stratigraphic information. The Atlantic coastal Plain was considered to be generally devoid of faults, although scientists such as McGee (1888) and Darton (1891, 1951) had proposed major faulting or uplift along the Fall Line. The Piedmont and Blue Ridge Provinces of the eastern United States contained numerous mapped faults, abut the recency of fault movement was unknown because of the absence of Cenozoic strata.</p>\n<p>One of the initial efforts of the Reactor Hazards Program was a compilation and evaluation of Cretaceous and younger faults in the East. Topical studies were initiated in areas of particular interest, and these studies in turn generated a broader scientific interest in the problem of Cenozoic deformation. A preliminary literature investigation of Cretaceous and younger faulting was published by York and Oliver (1976), and was followed by an interpretive map of young faults by Howard and others (1978).</p>\n<p>The data in this report represent the presently available knowledge of fault characteristics and distribution. Clearly, as current investigations progress and as geologists become more aware of the evidence for Cenozoic faulting, the number of known Cenozoic faults will increase substantially. Until such time, the data that are shown here must be viewed conservatively because I believe they are not a totally representative collection of information at this scale. the data are useful in characterizing basic fault patterns in the region, but certain factors limit the usefulness of the map. The back-arc, median, and downwarp basins have significantly greater petroleum potential than do the fore-arc and inner-are basins. The latter two types are expected to yield only small discoveries; also, significant portions of such basins lie in water depths in excess of 1,000 m. The back-arc basins have been the most petroleum productive, but they also have been the most extensively explored. The greatest undiscovered petroleum potential is estimated to lie in the downwarp and median basins. \r\n\r\nIn Indonesia, six general types of geological settings or plays have been identified as being favorable for petroleum accumulation. They are transgressive clastic sequences, regressive clastic sequences, deltas, carbonate platforms, pinnacle reefs, and fractured igneous and volcanic rocks. The multiple-pay transgressive clastic reservoirs in the back-arc basins have produced most of Indonesia's crude oil. About 136 million tons of coal within the tract is Federally owned, of which 98 million tons has been identified for potential lease sale. A hydrologic study has been conducted in the potential lease area to describe existing hydrologic systems and to assess potential impacts of surface coal mining on local water resources. Shallow ground-water resources in the tract are limited to sandstone and coal aquifers in the Tongue River Member of the Fort Union Formation (Paleocene age). These shallow aquifers have small values of hydraulic conductivity; yields to wells generally range from 1 to 10 gallons per minute. Water from shallow sandstone and coal aquifers is used primarily for livestock watering and domestic supply. Chemical analyses indicate that water from most shallow aquifers is dominated by calcium and magnesium cations and sulfate and bicarbonate anions. Surface-water resources in the tract consist primarily of small reservoirs used for livestock watering. All streams in the tract are ephemeral, making them unreliable as a source of livestock water. Mining of the Pust coal bed would cause certain impacts on local water resources. About 15 stock and domestic wells and 13 small stock reservoirs would be destroyed by mining. Shallow coal and sandstone aquifers would be permanently removed from parts of the tract. Leaching of soluble salts from mine spoils may cause a long-term degradation of the quality of water in shallow aquifers in or near the coal tract. Impacts on the local water resources could be mitigated by development of alternative ground-water supplies from deeper aquifers in the Fort Union and in the Upper Cretaceous Hell Creek and Fox Hills Formations. Reservoirs destroyed by mining could be reconstructed during mine reclamation. Results were obtained through linear multiple regression. It also presents functions relating uncertainties in records to the number of discharge measurements made at these and 21 other stations. The application is unusual in that it includes analysis of the uncertainty of discharge as affected by backwater from ice. Total uncertainty consists of errors incurred during measurement and during data processing. An average of 46.8 percent of the total variance for the 21 stations not affected by backwater was due to measurement variance, and 53.2 percent was due to process variance. Data from the remaining 33 stations were divided into summer (open-water) periods and the winter (backwater) periods. An average of 49.3 percent of the total variance for the summer-period stations was due to measurements variance; 50.7 percent was due to process variance. An average of 25.2 percent of the total variance for the winter-period stations was due to measurement variance; 74.8 percent was due to process variance. Results of the seasonal division of average variance suggest that the process and measurement variances are essentially equal during open-water periods and that process variance is considerably greater than the measurement variance during backwater periods. The errors in winter discharge records significantly increased average uncertainty in the records of annual mean discharge. The regional pattern of stream sulfate trends is similar to that reported for trends in S02 emissions to the atmosphere during the same period. Trends in the ratio of alkalinity to total major cation concentrations at the stations follow an inverse pattern of small increases in the Northeast and small, but widespread decreases elsewhere.
