The program, originally written to be processed in batch mode for an IBM computer, was modified to run in time-sharing mode on the DEC 10 computer.

This version does not depart philosophically from the original program; however, the input and output formats have been adapted to the time-sharing terminal. These modifications and the actual running of the program are not discussed in detail here, as this report is intended only to make the program itself available. Examples of the input and output formats are shown on pages 3-8.

Input can be entered through the terminal by two methods. An input file may either be independently created and then entered into the program later, or created directly through the interactive mode of the program. With the latter method a file of the input information may also be saved for later use. Both methods allow for the data to be edited after each refinement run.

The output format has been changed to an 80-column width, common to many terminals. Only the last refinement cycle is printed and some of the statistical computations have been surpressed.

Using the \"Unit Cell\" program from the terminal in a \"real time\" situation emphasizes the versatility of the program. The injection system presently consists of Injection Well A, Injection Well B, and two deep monitor wells all completed open hole in the lower limestone of the Floridan aquifer and one shallow monitor well completed in the upper limestone of the Floridan aquifer. The two deep monitor wells are used to observe hydraulic and geochemical effects of waste injection in the injection zone at locations 1.5 miles south-southeast and 1.9 miles north-northwest of the center of the injection site. The shallow monitor well, used to observe any effects in the first permeable zone above the 220-foot-thick confining bed, is 100 feet northeast of Injection Well A.

Since injection began in July 1963, about 14.2 billion gallons of acidic industrial waste consisting of an aqueous solution of nitric acid, inorganic salts, and numerous organic compounds have been injected into a limestone aquifer containing saline water. From July 1963 to April 1968, the pH of the waste was raised to about 5.5 with aqueous ammonia prior to injection. Since 1968, no aqueous ammonia has been added and the waste has been injected at a pH of about 2.3. Wellhead injection pressures at both injection wells in December 1977 averaged 170 pounds per square inch and the hydraulic pressure gradient was 0.52 pound per square inch per foot of depth to the top of the injection zone. Increases in pressures since 1970 at the north and south monitor wells ranged from 21 to 31 pounds per square inch. The pressure in the shallow monitor well declined about 6 pounds per square inch.

No changes were detected in the chemical characteristics of water from the shallow monitor and the north monitor wells. Since late 1973, concentrations of bicarbonate and dissolved organic carbon in water from the south monitor well have increased. These increases in bicarbonate and dissolved organic carbon have been accompanied by increases in gas content of water at the point of discharge from the well and a distinctive odor like that of the waste. In samples of water from the south monitor well, concentrations of nitrogen gas ranged from 5.1 to 12.7 milligrams per liter, methane from 24 to 70 milligrams per liter, and carbon dioxide from 14 to 56 milligrams per liter.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78355","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation","usgsCitation":"Pascale, C.A., and Martin, J., 1978, Hydrologic monitoring of waste-injection wells near Pensacola, Florida, March 1970 - December 1977: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-355, v, 78 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78355.","productDescription":"v, 78 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413197,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0355/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142485,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0355/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Pensacola","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.4352973536881,\n              30.602838004118823\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.4352973536881,\n              30.347295597488937\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.03446660204348,\n              30.347295597488937\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.03446660204348,\n              30.602838004118823\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.4352973536881,\n              30.602838004118823\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ae4b07f02db6065aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pascale, Charles A.","contributorId":99978,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pascale","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161691,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Martin, J.B.","contributorId":32923,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"J.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161690,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

These sea bed micro-features are regionally widespread but are not uniformly distributed. Furthermore, the microrelief, texture, and lithologic structure of sea bed sediments have been significantly modified by the disruptive processes associated with ice gouge formation. \r\n\r\nAn analysis of some 10,.200 individual gouges shows that the density of ice gouges increases with increasing latitude, increasing slope gradients, and decreasing water depth. Across the northern half of the shelf few trackline segments are free of ice gouges; in the southern portion numerous segments contain no ice gouges. However, ice gouges extend at least as far south as Cape Prince of Wales Shoal. Densities of over 200 gouges per km of trackline are not uncommon in water depths less than 30 m ,but no values higher than 50 km are encountered in water deeper than 50 m. No ice gouges have been observed in water depths exceeding 58 m. Saturation ice gouge densities (greater than 300/Pan) occur along the eastern side 6f Barrow Sea Valley and the northeast flank of Hanna Shoal. \r\n\r\nMaximum gouge incision depths per km of trackline are greatest in water 36 to 50 m deep . A maximum incision depth of 4.5 m occurs in the 35-40 m water depth interval. Individual ice gouge events wider than 100 m, most produced by multi-keeled ice fragments, are found between 31 and 45 m depths. The dominant azimuth of gouge furrows shows no preferred orientation on the Chukchi Sea shelf; only locally does bathmetric control of the trend of gouges appear. \r\n\r\nThe occurrence of current-produced bedforms within individual ice gouges suggests an interaction between slow-moving grounded or gouging ice keels and swift currents. In other cases, current-produced bedforms, interpreted as being in equilibrium with existing flow regimes, lie adjacent to ice gouges, suggesting contemporary ice gouging to water depths of at least 43 m.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78693","usgsCitation":"Toimil, L.J., 1978, Ice-gouged microrelief on the floor of the eastern Chukchi Sea, Alaska: a reconnaissance survey: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-693, 44, [68] leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (113 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78693.","productDescription":"44, [68] leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (113 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144818,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0693/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39316,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0693/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb725","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Toimil, Lawrence J.","contributorId":53806,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Toimil","given":"Lawrence","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163160,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Delineation of thin, nonsalt interbeds within the upper reaches of the salt body is extremely important because the nature and character of any such fluid- or gas-saturated horizons would be critical to the mode of emplacement of wastes into the structure. \r\n\r\nAnalysis of 50 km of conventional seismic-reflection data, in the vicinity of the anticline, indicates that mapping of thin beds at shallow depths may well be possible using a specially designed adaptation of state-of-the-art seismic oil-exploration procedures. Computer ray-trace modeling of thin beds in salt reveals that the frequency and spatial resolution required to map the details of interbeds at shallow depths (less than 750 m) may be on the order of 500 Hz, with surface-spread lengths of less than 350 m. Consideration should be given to the burial of sources and receivers in order to attenuate surface noise and to record the desired high frequencies. \r\n\r\nCorrelation of the seismic-reflection data with available well data and surface geology reveals the complex, structurally initiated diapir, whose upward flow was maintained by rapid contemporaneous deposition of continental clastic sediments on its flanks. Severe collapse faulting near the crests of these structures has distorted the seismic response. Evidence exists, however, that intrasalt thin beds of anhydrite, dolomite, and black shale are mappable on seismic record sections either as short, discontinuous reflected events or as amplitude anomalies that result from focusing of the reflected seismic energy by the thin beds; computer modeling of the folded interbeds confirms both of these as possible causes of seismic response from within the salt diapir. Prediction of the seismic signatures of the interbeds can be made from computer-model studies. \r\n\r\nPetroleum seismic-reflection data are unsatisfactory for mapping the thin beds because of the lack of sufficient resolution to provide direct evidence of the presence of the thin beds. However, indirect evidence, present in these data as discontinuous seismic events, suggests that two geophysical techniques designed for this specific problem would allow direct detection of the interbeds in salt. These techniques are vertical seismic profiling and shallow, short-offset, high-frequency, seismic-reflection recording.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78591","usgsCitation":"Stockton, S., and Balch, A.H., 1978, The utility of petroleum seismic exploration data in delineating structural features within salt anticlines: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-591, ii, 36 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.; (41 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78591.","productDescription":"ii, 36 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.; (41 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143644,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0591/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39150,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0591/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a58e4b07f02db62f170","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stockton, S.L.","contributorId":89139,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stockton","given":"S.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162965,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Balch, Alfred H.","contributorId":71553,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Balch","given":"Alfred","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162964,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

For streams where only periodic measurements are made during the year, and that are not appreciably affected by regulation or by thermal loading , a simple harmonic function may adequately depict the annual seasonal cycle of stream temperature at any given site. Resultant harmonic coefficients obtained from available stream-temperature records may be used in the following ways: (1) To interpolate between discrete measurements by solving the harmonic function at specified times, thereby filling in estimates of stream-temperature values; (2) to characterize areal or regional patterns of natural stream-temperature values; (2) to characterize areal or regional patterns of natural stream-temperature conditions; and (3) to detect and to assess any significant at a site brought about by streamflow regulation or basin development. Moreover, less-than-daily or sampling frequencies at a given site may give estimates of annual variation of stream temperatures that are statistically comparable to estimates obtained from a daily or continuous sampling scheme. The latter procedure may result in potential savings of resources in network operations, with negligible loss in information on annual stream-temperature variations. Hydrologic data are being collected to provide the data base necessary to determine the effects of a potential mining operation on the water resources of the area. The area of potential depletion or contamination of water supplies is the 50-square-mile alluvial slope downgradient from Copper Basin. In the Copper Basin area the streams generally are dry, except for the perennial flow in a 3-mile-long reach of Kirkland Creek, where the base flow ranges from about 1 to 3 cubic feet per second.

The water in the alluvium, which is more than 1,000 feet thick in places, generally is under unconfined conditions. The direction of ground-water movement is generally southwesterly toward Skull Valley Wash and Kirkland Creek. The depth to water in wells ranges from less than 10 to 675 feet below the land surface. Near the center of the area, test wells penetrate a clay confining bed at the base of the alluvium and an underlying sequence of volcanic rocks, which is more than 1,000 feet thick and contains water under confined conditions.

Pump tests indicate that the confining bed forms a barrier between the water in the alluvium and the water in the volcanic rocks and that, initially, pumping from the volcanic rocks would not affect the water level in the alluvium. The areal extent of the volcanic sequence is not known.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78413","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the The map indicates the location of all sites as of July 1976 in the conterminous United States, and a later published report will include all sites. The project is one of several in the National Environmental Overview Program of the U.S. Geological Survey which will identify and summarize geologic, hydrologic, and topographic topics associated with future energy, mineral resource, and land use development in the United States.

The increasing use of atomic energy creates a need for the dissemination of information about nuclear reactors. Because power plant safety is related, in part, to the geology and seismology of the plant area and surroundings, this study is focused primarily on that relationship.

Information about the geology and seismology is summarized from reports prepared by consultants to utility companies and submitted by the companies to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (formerly the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission) in support of the application for a construction permit.

Coordinates for site locations were established by the author from descriptive information in the reports. The U.S. Geological Survey 7-1/2 minute topographic maps were used in confirming the geographic location of the sites. The coordinates may in some cases represent the planned location rather than the exact actual location.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Stream discharge, which was measured along this reach every 16 to 24 kilometers, ranged from 9.4 to 10.6 cubic meters per second. Variations in streamflow were explained, in part, by underflow, loss to ground water, and evaporation. Specific conductance was measured about every 2 kilometers and indicated a downstream increase on the order of 11 to 12 percent for the reach. Except for mercury, bottom-sediment trace-element concentrations in the study reach were less than maximum concentrations determined during August-September 1976 for bottom sediments at unperturbed sites upstream in the Yampa River basin. At one of five sampling sites, the mercury concentration in bottom sediments exceeded the maximum measured upstream level.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78226","usgsCitation":"Steele, T.D., Wentz, D.A., and Warner, J.W., 1978, Hydrologic reconnaissance of the Yampa River during low flow, Dinosaur National Monument, northwestern Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-226, ii, 10 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78226.","productDescription":"ii, 10 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142576,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0226/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":358795,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0226/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Dinosaur National Monument","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -109.05029296875,\n              40.43022363450862\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.50372314453125,\n              40.43022363450862\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.50372314453125,\n              40.71603763556807\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.05029296875,\n              40.71603763556807\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.05029296875,\n              40.43022363450862\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db60545d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steele, Timothy Doak","contributorId":88723,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steele","given":"Timothy","email":"","middleInitial":"Doak","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162916,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wentz, Dennis A. dawentz@usgs.gov","contributorId":1838,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wentz","given":"Dennis","email":"dawentz@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":162915,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Warner, James W.","contributorId":106119,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Warner","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162917,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Construction and regular use of a new production well in the area of nitrogen-rich water would temporarily increase the rate of nitrogen removal by causing more rapid flow of water from the silty upper part of the aquifer downward to the more permeable lower part, and by reducing the distance the water must flow through the lower part to the nearest point of withdrawal. After such a well had been in use for several months and the system had adjusted to the new conditions, the rate of further nitrogen removal would depend on the rate at which nitrogen compounds are leached from the soil by infiltrating precipitation. Alternative techniques for speeding the flushing of the aquifer include artificially increasing the amount of infiltration, changing the rates of withdrawal from existing production wells, and pumping shallow low-yield wells in the area of nitrogen-rich water. Effect of the effluent from sewage-treatment plants on water quality was evident at 3 sites where concentrations of nutrients and bacteria in the Broward County canals exceeded state standards of 2,400 colonies per 100 milliliters for total coliform bacteria, and where at 2 of the 3 sites the fecal coliform/fecal streptococcus ratios indicated possible human contamination. The effect of agriculture on water quality was evident where relatively high levels of chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides had concentrated in the bottom sediments of the canals. For example, DDD reached levels of 330 micrograms per kilogram at site 3. The effects of storm-water runoff on water quality were detected during the wet season when concentrations of several trace elements increased. For example, zinc averaged 30 micrograms per milliliter in the wet season compared with 20 micrograms per milliliter during the dry season.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological On the basis of synoptic in situ measurements of light transmissivity and suspended-sediment concentrations at six monitoring stations, a time sequence of six turbidity structures was established along the longitudinal trend of the bay and its tidal inlet over a 16-month observation period. The bay turbidity structures were observed to be highly variable in time and space. Structures ranged from a vertically homogeneous water column, to a well-stratified column exhibiting an increasing turbidity gradient with depth. Wind appeared to be the dominant forcing agent influencing turbidity toward the bayhead sector, where it both generates waves for bottom-sediment resuspension and regulates fluvial sediment influx from the Nueces River. Turbidity toward the baymouth sector appeared to be dominantly regulated by tidal forcing effects from Aransas Pass inlet. Both the discharge characteristics of the Nueces River and the mean density of the bay's water column had no discernible influence on the observed bay turbidity structures.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78789","usgsCitation":"Shideler, G.L., 1978, Longitudinal turbidity structures in a bar-built coastal plain estuary, Corpus Christi Bay, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-789, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78789.","productDescription":"34 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413412,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0789/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143562,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0789/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Corpus Christi Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -97.51778699827092,\n              27.89456789643843\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.51778699827092,\n              27.68326330727676\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.10734729025134,\n              27.68326330727676\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.10734729025134,\n              27.89456789643843\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.51778699827092,\n              27.89456789643843\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db640a98","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shideler, Gerald L.","contributorId":89137,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shideler","given":"Gerald","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162600,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
