Groundwater, the principal source of supply, is distributed largely by public water systems. Principal water-bearing formations in descending order, include the surficial aquifer, artesian zone 1 in the Tamiami Formation, zone 2 in the upper part of the Hawthorn Formation, zone 3 in the lower part of the Hawthorn Formation and upper part of the Tampa Limestone, and zones 4 and 5 which comprise the Floridan aquifer. The surficial aquifer, except near tidewater, provides limited supplies of freshwater to wells. Artesian zone 1 is the major aquifer for public supply. It is contaminated by saline water in some areas, either as a result of inundation by storm-driven tides or by upwar leakage of mineralized water from underlying aquifers through uncased or improperly constructed wells. The city of Venice obtains some water from zone 2, but the water is brackish in much of the area. The water is suitable for irrigation in parts of the area. Except for local use of water for watering livestock and maintaining ponds, the water from zones 3, 4, and 5 is little used because of its poor quality. Summary descriptions of individual lode gold deposits and districts which include those occurrences in the&nbsp;Medford&nbsp;1<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;x 2<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;quadrangle have been published by Brooks and Ramp (1968) and Hotz (1971) and by others cited in the reference lists in these two publications. As part of the Medford CUSMAP project between 1974 and 1980, some of these deposits were examined in the field during geologic mapping and geochemical sampling and most of the available information on individual deposits was compiled into a CRIB computer file (Computerized Resource Information Bank). This report is a summary of the more pertinent geologic and economic characteristics of the lode gold deposits for use in the resource evaluation part of the Medford CUSMAP project. Multiple-regression techniques were used to define the relationship between a suite of basin and climatic characteristics and flood peaks in three flood-frequency regions at a total of 95 sites. Station flood-frequency data were computed following guidelines in Bulletin 17A of the U.S. Water Resources Council. The frequency analyses are based upon weighted skew values, adjustments for high and low outliers, and historic peak data. \r\n\r\nRegression equations for estimation of peak discharges for 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.04, 0.02, and 0.01 exceedance probabilities are provided for ungaged sites. An improved sample of flood peaks and gaging stations and the definition of three flood-frequency regions reduced the standard errors of estimate by about 5 percent over those for the 1977 relations. Included in this analysis were the synthetic flood-frequency data at 8 sites computed using historic climatic data and 10 parameters optimized by calibration of the U.S. Geological Survey's rainfall-runoff model with storm data observed over 11 years. \r\n\r\nThe equations are applicable to streams unaffected by regulation where the usable manmade storage is less than 4.5 million cubic feet per square mile, or by diversions or urbanization. The equations are restricted to sites where the basin indices are within a specified range outside of eastern Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, or Nantucket Counties. Treatment of fifteen geochemical parameters illustrates the organic quality, quantity, and thermal maturity of well cuttings and core samples. Major maturity indicators suggest that the section is thermally mature for oil from approximately 3,300 feet to 10,500 feet (1,006 to. 3,200 m). Kerogen types are predominantly herbaceous and humic and, consequently, yield mainly gas. Except for these two areas of identified and suspected resources, we did not observe indications of resource potential elsewhere in the Raywood Flat Roadless Areas.</p>\n<p>The area having nonmetallic mineral resources is in the vicinity of the Mill Creek mine near the northeastern boundary of the further planning area (B5-187); there, we identified marginal reserves of marble suitable for the production of lime and construction stone. The reserves are marginal because of their remote location and poor accessibility. Geologic mapping did not reveal any additional marble occurrences within the study area.</p>\n<p>The area having moderate potential for base-metal resources forms a small zone in the eastern part of the recommended wilderness (A5-187). Within this zone, evidence provided by stream-sediment geochemistry suggests that crystalline bedrocks in several drainages contain concentrations of metallic elements. Because the terrain is inaccessible and covered with dense brush, most of the bedrock in the specific drainages containing the geochemical anomalies could not be examined. Thus, although we infer that mineral occurrences exist in the drainage basins, we have little data on which to base an estimate of their extent and quality. Locally, the crystalline rocks probably contain hydrothermal veins or disseminated occurrences where lead, copper, molybdenum, tin, cobalt, bismuth, and arsenic have been concentrated. However, the geochemical anomalies for these metals are small, and the stream drainages also are relatively small. Therefore, the inferred occurrences of metallic minerals probably are small scale, scattered, and low grade. Locally anomalous areas in perthitic, alkalic granite terrane in the Ranyah quadrangle possibly contain niobium, zirconium, thorium, fluorite, rare-earth, tin, molybdenum, or copper mineralization. The reconnaissance rock geochemical survey in layered volcanic and volcaniclastic terrane in the Jabal Dalfa quadrangle identified a zinc anomaly in quartzite and a nickel-copper zone that is an extension of the Jabal Judayr prospect, where a low-grade, nickel-copper sulfide deposit is known. The Bald al Jimalah East ancient lead-silver mine should be drilled to investigate its mineral potential at depth and to.determine its apparent relationship to the nearby Baid al Jimalah West tungsten-tin prospect.
