The Arkansas River meanders atop and interacts hydraulically with the area's unconfined sand and gravel aquifer. Owing to decreasing recharge and increasing discharge during the 1970's, water levels declined an average of 4 feet during 1970-79. Average annual streamflow at Syracuse, Kansas, also decreased from 232 cubic feet per second during 1951-69 to 85 cubic feet per second during 1970-79. \r\n\r\nA digital-computer model was calibrated to simulate the trends of historic water levels and streamflow during 1970-79. Simulated 1975-79 conditions depict an annual recharge to the aquifer of 15,000 acre-ft (acre-feet) from river leakage, 9,000 acre-ft from boundary inflow, and 50,000 acre-ft from deep percolation. Simulated annual discharge consists of 12,000 acre-ft to boundary outflow across the Bear Creek Fault zone, 1,000 acre-ft as leakage to the Arkansas River, 11,000 acre-ft to groundwater evaporation, and 57,000 acre-ft to pumpage. Simulated annual recharge was 7,000 acre-ft less than simulated annual discharge of 81,000 acre-ft. \r\n\r\nSimulation indicates that: (1) The long-term effects of less recharge from smaller than average amounts of annual precipitation during the 1970's were offset by more recharge during brief, timely periods of much greater than the mean monthly amounts of precipitation, and (2) the effects of the increased pumpage were partly offset by increased recharge resulting from increased irrigation. Model results indicate that the water-level decline and streamflow shortage during 1970-79 were affected more directly by departures from historic (1951-69) rates of incoming streamflow than by either the smaller than average amounts of precipitation or the increased pumpage during the 1970's. Results also indicate that waterlevel declines and streamflow reduction would stabilize or reverse during 1980-82 if one of the following conditions prevailed: (1) Monthly precipitation increased to 25 percent greater than the normal for 3 years. (2) pumpage decreased to 50 percent of the 1979 rate or, (3) incoming streamflow increased to the 1951-69 rate.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2200","usgsCitation":"Barker, R., Sauer, C.G., and Dunlap, L.E., 1983, Analysis and computer simulation of stream-aquifer hydrology, Arkansas River Valley, southwestern Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2200, vii, 59 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2200.","productDescription":"vii, 59 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137876,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2200/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25553,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2200/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25554,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2200/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad0e4b07f02db680ca5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barker, R.A.","contributorId":28952,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barker","given":"R.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":142963,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sauer, C. Also provided for each site are regression equations relating specific conductance to each of 12 chemical constituents and a regression equation relating specific conductance to stream discharge. \r\n\r\nThe descriptive statistics are presented by river basins. Water leaving these basins that has the lowest mean specific conductance (266 umho/cm) is from the Niobrara River at Verdel, and water that has the highest (1,890 umho/cm) is from the South Platte River at Roscoe. Statewide, the principal cations in streamflow are calcium and sodium, and the principal anions are bicarbonate and sulfate. Calcium and bicarbonate usually predominate where mean specific conductance is less than 1,000 umho/cm, and sodium and sulfate predominate where the mean exceeds 1,000 umho/cm. \r\n\r\nOn the basis of regression equations, dissolved solids, hardness, calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate, with some exceptions, correlate well with specific conductance of all stream sites. \r\n\r\nIllustrations of how regression equations may be used to estimate water quality of streamflow are given and are compared with values from actual analyses.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2179","usgsCitation":"Engberg, R.A., 1983, A statistical analysis of the quality of surface water in Nebraska: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2179, iv, 252 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2179.","productDescription":"iv, 252 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137974,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2179/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26364,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2179/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a630d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Engberg, Richard A.","contributorId":20897,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Engberg","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143561,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Channel capacities in Brown County are as little as 200 cubic feet per second, and spring flooding can be expected on an average of every other year. The river has potential for extended periods of flooding an average of once in 10 years. Extended periods of no flow during late-summer and winter also can be expected. Excluding flows of a very large magnitude, average travel time between Columbia and Scotland (a distance of 382 river miles) is estimated to be 25-30 days for most flows. The upstream reach of the James River within the Lake Dakota Plain generally loses discharge with distance whereas the downstream reach generally gains discharge with distance. Ground water - surface water interaction does not appear to be significant along upstream reaches of the James River. Some interaction, although not quantified, does occur in Hanson, Davison, and Yankton Counties. Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located just downsteam from the State line and containing Sand and Mud Lakes (combined capacity = 24,600 acre-feet), is a major source of water loss between LaMoure, N. The water was moderately hard (hardness greater than 60 but less than 120 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate). The concentrations of each of these constituents were usually greatest during winter, especially during the first few years of the study, but decreased significantly as discharges of municipal wastes were systematically and progressively diverted to treatment facilities downstream from the reservoir.</p>\n<p>Thermal stratification in Lake Arlington usually begins during March or April and persists until October. Thermal stratification has resulted in significant seasonal and areal variations in the concentration of dissolved oxygen, dissolved iron, dissolved manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Oxygen utilized in the decay of organic matter is not replenished during periods of summer stagnation, and water below depths of 30 to 40 feet usually contains less than 2 milligrams per liter of dissolved oxygen during stagnation. Even though heated effluent from an electrical generating plant is returned to the reservoir at site GC and causes an elevation of water temperature, average dissolved oxygen levels at this site are not significantly different from levels at other sites.</p>\n<p>During summer stagnation, reducing conditions result in the dissolution of iron and manganese from bottom deposits at deep sites in the reservoir. At site AQ, a deep site near Arlington Dam, dissolved iron concentrations in water near the bottom during summer stagnation ranged from less than 10 to 1,100 micrograms per liter and averaged about 640 micrograms per liter. Dissolved manganese concentrations near the bottom at site AC during summer staynation ranged from 20 to 2,700 micrograms per liter and averaged about 1,500 micrograms per liter. The concentrations of dissolved iron and dissolved manganese in water throughout the reservoir during winter circulation and in water near the reservoir surface during summer stagnation averaged less than 50 micrograms per liter.</p>\n<p>Seasonal temperature and dissolved oxygen cycles resulted in the recycling of dissolved iron and dissolved manganese between the water and bottom sediments. However, no significant accumulation of these constituents within the reservoir was detected during the study.</p>\n<p>The concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus are greatest during summer stagnation in water near the bottom at deep sites. At site AC during the summer, the concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen in the hypolimnion averaged about 0.9 milligram per liter, and the concentration of total phosphorus near the bottom averaged about 0.2 milligram per liter. The concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen in the epilimnion at site AC averaged about 0.1 milligram per liter; the concentrations of total phosphorus averaged less than 0.1 milligram per liter.</p>\n<p>The densities and composition of algal populations varied seasonally. At site AC, total algae counts ranged from 200 to 240,000 cells per mi Hi liter and averaged about 50,000 cells per milliliter. At site FC, total algae counts ranged from 1,000 to 290,000 cells per milliliter and averaged about 56,000 cells per milliliter. Algal densities were greatest during the summer with blue-green algae being the predominant phyla.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri834196","usgsCitation":"Andrews, F.L., and Gibbons, W.J., 1983, Water quality of Lake Arlington on Village Creek, north-central Texas; 1973 to 1981: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4196, vi, 126 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834196.","productDescription":"vi, 126 p.","numberOfPages":"132","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":408941,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35843.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":157166,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4196/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54696,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4196/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Lake Arlington","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -97.24342346191406,\n              32.66278938534136\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.24342346191406,\n              32.73646168396554\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.17716217041014,\n              32.73646168396554\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.17716217041014,\n              32.66278938534136\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.24342346191406,\n              32.66278938534136\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5fa982","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Andrews, Freeman L.","contributorId":91486,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andrews","given":"Freeman","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195518,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gibbons, Willard J.","contributorId":173568,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gibbons","given":"Willard","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195517,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The area is on the south flank of the Backbone anticline; the rocks dip to the south at 5o-45o. Alluvium along James Fork consists of sandy and clayey silt and may be as much as 30 feet thick.\r\nWater in bedrock is under artesian conditions. The depth to water in most wells is less than 20 feet below the surface; a few wells flow. Yields of most wells probably are less than 5 gallons per minute. Water from nine wells was a sodium carbonate or sodium mixed anion type; dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 294 to 1,250 milligrams per liter. No relationship between variations in chemistry of ground water and well depth, geographic distribution, or geologic formation is apparent.\r\n\r\nJames Fork has flow most of the time and discharge exceeds 25 cubic feet per second about one-half the time. The mean dissolved-solids concentration in James Fork water ranged from 224 milligrams per liter near Williams, Oklahoma, to 332 milligrams per liter near Hackett, Arkansas. Water in James Fork is a calcium magnesium sulfate type about 75 percent of the time. Maximum suspended sediment discharge was 2,720 tons per day. Silt-clay particles (diameters less than 0.062 millimeter) are the dominant sediment size.\r\n\r\nPotential hydrologic effects of surface mining for coal include: (1) Creation of additional water storage in surface-mine ponds, (2) changes in rock permeability and ground-water storage, (3) changes in runoff and streamflow characteristics, (4) changes in drainage patterns, and (5) changes in the chemical quality and sediment load of James Fork. Although mining may increase the quantities of sediment and dissolved minerals added to James Fork, detection of these increases would be difficult because the potentially mineable area is very small in proportion to the total area of the basin.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wri834013","usgsCitation":"Marcher, M., 1983, Preliminary appraisal of the hydrology of the Rock Island area, Le Flore County, Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4013, iv, 39 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834013.","productDescription":"iv, 39 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156904,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4013/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54480,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4013/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54481,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4013/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54482,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4013/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54483,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4013/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67ca7e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marcher, M.V.","contributorId":9267,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marcher","given":"M.V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":194784,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Collectively, anatomical evidence was detected for 33 of the 34 growing-season floods during the study period. Evidence of 12 floods prior to 1930 was also noted, including catastrophic ones in 1889 and 1924. Trees damaged after the transition from earlywood to latewood growth typically formed ' flood rings ' of enlarged vessels within the latewood zone. Trees damaged near the beginning of the growth year developed flood rings within, or contiguous with, the earlywood. Both patterns are assumed to have developed when flood-damaged trees produced a second crop of leaves. Trees damaged by high-magnitude floods developed well formed flood rings along the entire height and around the entire circumference of the stem. Small floods were generally associated wtih diffuse or discontinuous anomalies restricted to stem apices. Frequency of flood rings was positively related to flood magnitude, and time of flood generation during the tree-growth season was estimated from the radial position of anomalous growth relative to annual ring width. Reconstructing tree heights in a year of flood-ring formation gives a minimum stage estimate along local stream reaches. Some trees provided evidence of numerous floods. Those with the greatest number of flood rings grew on frequently flooded surfaces subject to flood-flow velocities of at least 1 m/s, and more typically greater than 2 m/s. Tree size, more than age, was related to flood-ring formation. Trees kept small by frequent flood damage had more flood rings than taller trees of comparable age. The Tar Sand Triangle area, which contains about 15 billion barrels of oil, is the largest. This area and the Sunnyside and P R Springs areas contain more than three-fourths of the Utah reserves. About 88,000 acre-feet of water per year would be required for a commercial tar-sand industry producing about 365,000 barrels per day. At this rate, most of the recoverable oil would be mined within 30 years. About 22,000 acre-feet of water per year would be required for a commercial tar-sand industry producing about 83,000 barrels per day. Impacts on local hydrology would be greatest in the Tar Sand Triangle, Sunnyside, and P R Springs areas. Impacts could be minimized with proper construction of surface facilities to decrease erosion, sediment transport, and impoundment of mining and retort water. Increases in salinity of the Colorado River at Imperial Dam, Ariz.-Calif., could be about 3 milligrams per liter, with a peak of 9 milligrams per liter, for a 365 ,000-barrel-per-day industry and less than 1 milligram per liter , with a peak of 2 milligrams per liter, for an 83 ,000-barrel-per-day industry.
