Under the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964) and the Joint Conference Report on Senate Bill 4, 88th Congress, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have been conducting mineral surveys of wilderness and primitive areas. Areas officially designated as \"wilderness,\" \"wild,\" or \"canoe\" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report discusses the results of a mineral survey of the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Study Area, Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Lake, Park, and Chaffee Counties, Colo. The area was established as a wilderness study area by Public Law 96-560, December 22, 1980.

It evolved over the last 25 million years (Miocene and Pliocene epochs) from an ancestral, Atlantic-Pacific species that also gave rise to the Central American oyster of the Pacific coast, Crassostrea corteziensis (Hertlein) (Stenzel 1971). It evolved to fill a eurytopic niche in coastal estuaries where it forms massive reefs in nearshore bays, sounds, lagoons, and river mouths. Its existence depends on suitable substratum (cultch and firm bottom sediments) and acceptable sal-inity conditions. The location and distribution of oyster reefs in a salt marsh-estuari ne ecosystem are not acci denta 1; rather, they result from the interacti on of many bi 01 ogi ca 1, chemica1, geo1ogi ca1, and phys i ca 1 processes (Butler 1954a; Marshall 1954; Bahr and Lanier 1981).

Parts of the area have a low potential for the occurrence of additional low-grade graphite resources, but there is no potential for additional magnesian marble resources within the roadless area. Sand, gravel, and construction stone other than carbonate rocks are found in the roadless area, but similar or better quality materials are abundant and more accessible outside the area. The roadless area has no identified energy mineral resources, but parts of the area have a low to moderate potential for low-grade uranium resources. There are no identified metallic mineral resources within the area, and there is no evidence of a potential for the occurrence of such resources. No previously unknown mineral occurrence was located during this study.

From west to east the four Klamath Mountains thrust slices are called the western Jurassic belt, the western Paleozoic and Triassic belt, the central metamorphic belt, and the eastern Klamath belt. The Condrey Mountain Road less Area is located within a structural window in the western Paleozoic and Triassic belt, a window in which the structural dome comprised of the Condrey Mountain Schist is exposed (Coleman and others, 1983). North, east and south of the roadless area, the Condrey Mountain Schist is separated from the overlying western Paleozoic and Triassic belt by a low-angle regional thrust, whereas to the west the two units are in high-angle fault contact (Coleman and others, 1983).
\nThe Condrey Mountain schist consists mainly of sedimentary and volcanic rocks metamorphosed to greenschist facies. Metasedimentary rocks are exposed over most of the eastern and central parts of the structural window. Metavolcanic rocks occupy the western part of the window but also occur in small exposures within the metasedimentary rocks and along the eastern and southern margins of the window. Tabular bodies of metaserpentinite, the largest of which crops out near White Mountain, are contained within the metasedimentary rocks. Densities of hand samples from 11 sites scattered throughout the Condrey Mountain window average 2.66±0.05 g/cm3. The four samples of metavolcanic rocks yielded a higher average density than the seven samples of metasedimentary rocks (2.71±0.04 g/cm3 versus 2.63±0.03 g/cm3).
\nAlong the western edge of the Condrey Mountain Road less Area, numerous narrow north-trending zones of mineralized schist extend from near Copper Butte on the south, northward to Elliot Creek (Coleman and others, 1983). These zones contain abundant pyrite mineralization associated with pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, qalena, and sphalerite. The Blue Ledge mine area, 2 mi north-northeast of Copper Butte, is located in a zone of mineralized schist.
\nThe western Paleozoic and Triassic belt that nearly surrounds the Condrey Mountain Schist is a melange of sedimentary, volcanic, and ultramafic rocks metamorphosed to amphibolite facies (Coleman and others, 1983). Only two samples of the metamorphic melange were collected near the Condrcy Mountain Road less Area, but extensive sampling of this unit southwest of the roadless area yielded an average sample density of 2.86±0.15 g/cm3 (112 samples) (Jachens and others, 1983).

Sieved bulk-sediment fractions and pan concentrates were created from the original samples collected from wadis in the two quadrangles. A semiquantitative 30-element spectrographic analysis was completed on both the sieved bulk-sediment fraction and the pan concentrate of each sample. The results were statistically analyzed in an attempt to identify anomalous regions. Anomaly threshold values were calculated for most elements; the threshold value of an element in a data set is defined as the geometric mean value plus two standard deviations. \r\n\r\nThe Bald al Jimalah West tin-tungsten deposit (MODS 02661) in the southern part of the Al Jurdhawiyah quadrangle was identified by one pan-concentrate sample containing anomalous concentrations of tin and tungsten. Samples near the Bald al Jimalah East ancient lead-zinc-silver mines (MODS 00960) contain strongly anomalous concentrations of tin and lead and to a lesser extent of tungsten and copper. Both of these regions and other regions containing anomalous concentrations of certain elements are recommended for additional studies.
