The first schemes investigated combine finite-element spatial discretization with split-step time stepping schemes that have been found useful in finite-difference computations. Because of the large number of numerical integrations performed in space and the large sparse matrices solved, these finite-element schemes were found to be economically uncompetitive with finite-difference schemes. A very promising leapfrog scheme is proposed which, when combined with a novel very fast spatial integration procedure, eliminates the need to solve any matrices at all. Additional problems attacked included proper propagation of waves and proper specification of the normal-flow boundary condition. This report indicates work in progress and does not come to a definitive conclusion as to the best approach for finite-element modeling of surface-water problems. Sand and gravel units of the unconsolidated deposits, which occur principally in valley bottoms, form the best aquifers and commonly provide well yields of several hundred gallons per minute. Carbonate aquifers are the most productive consolidated rock units. Ground water in the Hudson River basin is generally hard and may contain appreciable amounts of iron, salts in solution, or sulfur locally. Basic data on the availability of ground water in the Hudson River drainage area are compiled in (1) a hydrogeologic map of the drainage basin; (2) a table of well depths, yields, concentrations of selected chemical constituents, and hardness of ground water, listed by county and aquifer type; (3) a short text describing the occurrence of ground water in the basin; and (4) a bibliography of ground-water reports pertinent to the area studied. Field and aerial-photograph inspections indicate that large mass-movement features, such as earthflows and massive streamside debris slides, occur primarily in terrain underlain by unmetamorphosed or slightly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. These features cannot account for stream sediment derived from schist. Observed lithologic heterogeneity of stream sediment therefore suggests that large-scale mass movement is only one part of a complex suite of processes supplying sediment to streams in this basin. Other significant sediment contributors include various forms of fluvial erosion and small-scale discrete mass failures, particularly on oversteepened hillslopes adjacent to perennial streams. Photo-interpretive studies of landslide and timber-harvest history adjacent to Redwood Creek, together with analysis of regional precipitation and runoff records for six flood-producing storms between 1953 and 1975, indicate that loci and times of significant streamside landsliding are influenced by both local storm intensity and streamside logging. Analysis of rainfall records and historic accounts indicates that the individual storms comprising a late-19th-century series of storms in northwestern California were similar in magnitude and spacing to those of the past 25 years. The recent storms apparently initiated more streamside landslides than comparable earlier storms, which occurred prior to extensive road construction and timber harvest. \r\n\r\nField observations and repeated surveys of stake arrays at 10 sites in the basin indicate that earthflows are especially active during prolonged periods of moderate rainfall; but that during brief intense storms, fluvial processes are the dominant erosion mechanism. Stake movement occurs mostly during wet winter months. Spring and summer movement was detected at some moist streamside sites. Surveys of stake arrays in two recently logged areas did not indicate exceptionally rapid rates of movement in three years following timber harvest.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78486","usgsCitation":"Harden, D.R., Janda, R.J., and Nolan, K.M., 1978, Mass movement and storms in the drainage basin of Redwood Creek, Humboldt County, California — A progress report: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-486, Report: v, 161 p.; 2 Plates: 32.90 × 25.11 inches and 29.10 × 32.38 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78486.","productDescription":"Report: v, 161 p.; 2 Plates: 32.90 × 25.11 inches and 29.10 × 32.38 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":396392,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_53769.htm"},{"id":37062,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0486/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143055,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0486/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37064,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0486/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37063,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0486/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Humboldt County","otherGeospatial":"Redwood Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -124.1,\n 40.6833\n ],\n [\n -123.6883,\n 40.6833\n ],\n [\n -123.6883,\n 41.3597\n ],\n [\n -124.1,\n 41.3597\n ],\n [\n -124.1,\n 40.6833\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a26e4b07f02db60fd8e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harden, Deborah Reid","contributorId":10042,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harden","given":"Deborah","email":"","middleInitial":"Reid","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159520,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Janda, Richard J.","contributorId":13235,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Janda","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159521,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nolan, K. Generally, the type(s) of water in tributary streams in the south and southwest parts of the watershed was calcium bicarbonate and in other tributaries were calcium sulfate and magnesium sulfate. Dissolved-solids concentrations of discharge from top-spill reservoirs were lower and more consistent over a range of flows than concentrations from uncontrolled streams. Chemical characteristics of discharges from bottom-draw reservoirs differed from those of discharges from the other reservoirs. More than half the manganese concentrations equaled or exceeded 0.05 milligrams per liter, the maximum concentration recommended for domestic water supplies. Leaf fall in forested parts of the watershed are probably a source of this manganese. Nitrate (as nitrogen) concentration of streams ranged from 0.00 to 2.5 milligrams per liter; orthophosphate (as phosphorus), from 0.00 to 0.29 milligrams per liter, and total organic carbon, from 2.0 to 14 milligrams per liter.

Concentrations of fecal coliform bacteria and fecal streptococcal bacteria ranged from 5 to 65,000 colonies per 100 milliliters and from 5 to 24,000 colonies per 100 milliliters, respectively. Occasional human-waste contamination is indicated downstream from the towns of Borden and Speed. Data on periphyton, phytoplankton, and benthic communities collected during low flow in September 1975 indicate organic loading of Muddy Fork downstream from the town of Speed. Phytoplankton community structures varied temporally and spatially.

Ranges of concentration of various chlorinated hydrocarbons in samples of bed materials (in micrograms per kilogram) were: chlordane, from 0 to 14; DDT, from 0 to 19; and PCB's, from 0 to 11. Concentrations of aldrin, DDD, DDE, heptachlor, and heptachlor epoxide of 5.1 micrograms per kilogram or less were also detected. The presence of these compounds makes them potentially available for accumulation in the biological food chain.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78202","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service","usgsCitation":"Hardy, M.A., 1978, A water-quality assessment of the Muddy Fork Silver Creek watershed, Clark, Floyd, and Washington counties, Indiana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-202, v, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78202.","productDescription":"v, 41 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407888,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0202/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144146,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0202/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Indiana","county":"Clark County, Floyd County, Washington County","otherGeospatial":"Muddy Fork Silver Creek watershed","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -85.76374053955077,\n              38.41533320693671\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.7532262802124,\n              38.41533320693671\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.7532262802124,\n              38.428277802802775\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.76374053955077,\n              38.428277802802775\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.76374053955077,\n              38.41533320693671\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4dcb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hardy, Mark A.","contributorId":50902,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hardy","given":"Mark","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159526,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Precipitation ranges from 34 to 50 inches per year across the outcrop area which is well suited to allow high rates of infiltration. The aquifer contains an estimated 70,000,000 acre-feet of water having less than 1,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids. The average saturated sand thickness is 250 feet. Aquifer tests indicate the average transmissivity is 1,480 feet squared per day and the average storage coefficient is 0.0005. Large-capacity wells tapping the aquifer commonly yield 100 to 500 gallons per minute; the maximum measured yield is 1,700 gallons per minute. Water usage from the aquifer is very small owing to the availability of an abundance of surface water. Water quality throughout the central and northern part of the aquifer is generally acceptable for municipal use. Preliminary studies by the U.S. Geological Survey and State agencies in Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota have indicated that these aquifers might provide a significant percentage of the water requirements for coal development. Geologic and water-temperature data for the Minnelusa Formation of Permian and Pennsylvanian age and for the Madison Limestone (Group where it is subdivided) of Mississippian and locally late Devonian age , and their equivalents, were compiled and interpreted. Maps were produced showing the altitude and ground-water temperatures of the top of these formations. The altitude (configuration) maps show the depth and position of the formations throughout the area. Temperature maps can be used to calculate changes in the viscosity of water caused by large temperature differences. The viscosity differences will be useful in adjusting calculated transmissivity aquifer values (the rate at which water can be transmitted through an aquifer). The data were collected to determine the feasibility of subsurface injection of storm runoff. An exploratory hole and five observation wells were constructed between October 1974 and April 1976. The lithology of the upper 185 feet at the test site is predominantly sand and marl. From 185 feet to 3,504 feet, limestone and dolomite predominate. Also , gypsum is present below 1.290 feet. Vertical intrinsic permeability, porosity, and compressibility of cores are reported. A 73-hour withdrawal test discharging 3,450 gallons per minute was run in the test injection well. At the site, chloride concentration in water from 192 to 340 feet, ranged from 150 to 680 milligrams per liter, and from 500 to 1,267 feet ranged from 16,000 to 20,000 milligrams per liter. Average annual yield in the Big Eau Pleine River near Stratford is 32.tons per square mile, with an annual yield ranging from 1.0 to 64 tons per square mile. Fenwood Creek at Bradley and Freeman Creek at Halder, two smaller tributary basins, have average annual yields of 3.3 and 7.9 tons per square mile, respectively. Suspended-sediment concentrations in the basin ranged from 0 to 960 milligrams per liter, with a median concentration at the Stratford site of 13 milligrams per liter. Ninety percent of the material transported by the streams of the Big Eau Pleine basin is finer than sand and is made up of about equal percentages of silt and clay.
\n
A l3-year average of about 9,400 tons per year of suspended sediment is transported to the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir by streamflow and overland flow, whereas about 2,500 tons per year leaves the reservoir in its outflow. Considering only sediment inflow and outflow by streamflow and overland flow, and assuming the 2,500 tons per year is approximately the long-term average, the reservoir trap efficiency would be greater than 70 percent. The actual trap efficiency of the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir probably is somewhat higher than 70 percent because bedload transport of the streams and sediment inflow from shoreline erosion were not measured.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78313","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources","usgsCitation":"Hindall, S.M., 1978, Suspended-sediment transport in the Big Eau Pleine River Basin, central Wisconsin: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-313, iv, 12 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78313.","productDescription":"iv, 12 p.","numberOfPages":"16","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":141847,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0313/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37203,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0313/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Clark County, Marathon County, Taylor County","otherGeospatial":"Big Eau Pleine River","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-90.3163,44.6852],[-90.3165,44.5989],[-90.3161,44.5127],[-90.3163,44.4247],[-90.4366,44.4226],[-90.5587,44.4221],[-90.6803,44.4225],[-90.8025,44.4227],[-90.8022,44.5093],[-90.9233,44.5099],[-90.9225,44.5961],[-90.9218,44.6833],[-90.9214,44.7558],[-90.9217,44.7704],[-90.9222,44.8576],[-90.9228,44.9443],[-90.9231,44.9913],[-90.9227,45.0311],[-90.924,45.0603],[-90.9226,45.1192],[-90.9271,45.1192],[-90.9257,45.2055],[-90.925,45.2919],[-90.9256,45.3796],[-90.8503,45.3781],[-90.823,45.3783],[-90.8022,45.3781],[-90.7017,45.3781],[-90.679,45.3778],[-90.5557,45.3775],[-90.4318,45.377],[-90.3533,45.3794],[-90.2904,45.3807],[-90.1671,45.3818],[-90.0419,45.3819],[-90.0464,45.2951],[-90.0465,45.2371],[-90.045,45.2083],[-90.0437,45.1206],[-90.0094,45.1198],[-89.9648,45.12],[-89.9202,45.1201],[-89.8439,45.1199],[-89.7968,45.12],[-89.7263,45.1197],[-89.6727,45.1198],[-89.6106,45.1198],[-89.5499,45.1199],[-89.4917,45.1194],[-89.4258,45.1189],[-89.3457,45.1184],[-89.3024,45.1184],[-89.2242,45.1187],[-89.2239,45.0297],[-89.2236,44.9429],[-89.224,44.8562],[-89.2243,44.769],[-89.2245,44.7161],[-89.2234,44.6814],[-89.346,44.6812],[-89.4899,44.6858],[-89.608,44.6853],[-89.7268,44.6852],[-89.8449,44.6849],[-89.9644,44.685],[-90.0793,44.685],[-90.1981,44.6854],[-90.3163,44.6852]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Clark\",\"state\":\"WI\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a25e4b07f02db60ebde","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hindall, S.
