Hydrologic data collection and interpretive studies were underway in every State, Puerto Rico, and several U.S. territories with focus on such current concerns as ground-water contamination, floods, impacts of toxic wastes, acid precipitation, and stream quality. During the year, this 50-50 matching program was carried out in working partnership with more than 800 State, regional, and local agencies. Joint funding from all sources totaled approximately $92 million. Details of the program are mutually negotiated at the working level by representatives of the Survey and representatives of the cooperating agencies. The pooling of interests results in a balanced effort that directs combined resources to hydrologic investigations having the most significance to both parties. A few of the highlights for FY 1983, and how the program is developed with other agencies are described. \nA geochemical survey detected moderately anomalous amounts of lead, copper, and zinc and less anomalous concentrations of tungsten, gold, and silver. Elements in anomalous samples were grouped as suites known to form in various ore deposits. Four element suites that may be indicative of mineralization are recognized in the White Mountains: (1) lead, zinc, and silver in carbonate rocks; (2) copper, barite, and lead in veins and replacement bodies; (3) tungsten, molybdenum, and bismuth in skarns; and (4) gold and arsenic in mineralized quartz veins. The assessment of the areas of resource potential was made in part by the application of ore deposit models to the geochemical results.
\nA mineral deposit survey by the U.S. Bureau of Mines indicates that there are no properties with identified mineral resources in the Blanco Mountain Roadless Area. There is one active placer claim. In the Black Canyon Roadless Area, two properties have 40,000 tons of indicated and inferred low-grade gold, silver, or lead-bearing rock. Five properties near this roadless area have 150,000 tons of indicated and inferred low-grade gold, silver, lead, zinc, or tungsten-bearing rock. About 90 percent of this tonnage is estimated to occur at the Mirage-Mariposa and the Hope mines.
\nThe roadless areas have no known resource potential for geothermal energy, coal, oil, or gas.

Both lakes are in the Denver metropolitan area and provide a variety of recreational activities, including boating, camping, fishing, picnicking, and swimming. The projected increase of urban development in the drainage basins of Chatfield and Cherry Creek lakes could increase the constituent loads delivered to the lakes. Due to the eutrophic condition of Cherry Creek Lake and the potential eutrophic condition of Chatfield Lake, increased constituent loads could affect the suitability of the lakes for recreation. A monitoring program was started to determine the constituent loads of the drainage basins to both lakes. A network of monitoring stations was established to collect ambient water quality samples, storm runoff water quality samples, precipitation, and stream discharge. In the Cherry Creek basin 12 observation wells were established in the alluvium upgradient from Cherry Creek lake. Water levels and water quality data were collected to determine the quantity and quality of groundwater entering Cherry Creek lake. Data were collected from January through December 1982. The data may be used to evaluate the present and projected impact of urbanization in the drainage basins and the effect of increased constituent loads delivered to Chatfield and Cherry Creek lakes. Nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratios support the strategy of emphasizing total P for lake eutrophication assessment within the range of lake conditions represented. Relationships based on summer total P concentrations, rather than winter-spring total P, led to more successful prediction of mean summertime chlorophyll a concentrations and Secchi-disc transparencies. The 78 lakes evaluated in the study had an average mean concentration of total phosphorus in near-surface waters of 22 ?g/L during the summer with mean concentrations for individual lakes ranging from 7 to 76 ?g/L. For regression relationships based on summer total phosphorus concentrations, the standard error of predicted Secchi-disc transparencies is ?0.9 meters for phosphorus concentrations of 15 ?g/L or greater, and the standard error of predicted chlorophyll a concentrations is ?5 ?g/L. Predictions for the range of conditions evaluated favorably agreed with predictions from similar relationships developed by other researchers for different lakes. The results from 12 sites (152 samples) within these plutons show two types of remanence behavior that appear fairly consistent with rock composition. The more leucocratic rocks (9 sites) tend to yield single-component magnetizations, of generally lower coercivities and blocking temperatures relative to the other units, that are considered to represent a recent viscous overprint, The mesocratic to melanocratic rocks show both single- and multicomponent magnetizations, the latter giving characteristic directions isolated through remagnetization-plane analysis. Three sites are considered reliable and yield paleomagnetic poles, of inferred Early Devonian age, that may reflect a 30? southward displacement from stable North America. The streams studied include the West Nueces, Nueces, Dry Frio, Frio, and Sabinal Rivers, and Seco, Hondo, and Verde Creeks. Streamflow measurements made during the recession of storm flows identified direct recharge to outcrops of the Edwards aquifer and related limestones that ranged from as high as 393 cubic feet per second for the Dry Frio River to as low as 42 cubic feet per second for the Sabinal River. Recharge to outcrops of the Buda Limestone, Eagle Ford Shale, and Austin Group also eventually reaches the Edwards aquifer, and measurements identified losses to these formations ranging from as high as 174 cubic feet per second for the Frio River to near zero for Verde Creek.
\nStatistical evaluations of historical daily flow records for the streams that have gaging stations upstream and downstream from the recharge zone provided mathematical relationships that expressed downstream flow in terms of other significant parameters. For each stream, flow entering the recharge zone is most significant in defining downstream flow; for some streams, antecedent flows at the upstream site and ground-water levels are also significantly related to downstream flow. The analyses also determined the discharges required upstream from the recharge zone to sustain flow downstream from that zone. These discharges ranged from 355 cubic feet per second for the combined Frio and Dry Frio Rivers to 33 cubic feet per second for the Nueces River. The entire flows of lesser magnitude are generally lost to recharge to the aquifer.
