Later study extended the known area of radioactivity to a total length of about 30 km. Mineralogic studies indicated that the samples were low in uranium and that the radioactivity was due principally to thorium in niobium-bearing minerals. Two samples were reexamined to identify the sources of radioactivity, but X-ray and alpha plate studies did not reveal the radioactive minerals, even though uranium mineralization was indicated by the alpha plates. Further sampling is suggested to isolate the sources of radioactivity. This study indicates that niobium occurrences are related to alkaline intrusives in many areas of western Saudi Arabia. These areas should be investigated for their possible niobium and rare earth contents; their uranium content is apparently too low to be of economic interest.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78773","usgsCitation":"Matzko, J., and Naqvi, M.I., 1978, A summary of niobium and rare earth localities from Ha'il and other areas in western Saudi Arabia: a preliminary study: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-773, i, 18 leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (20 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78773.","productDescription":"i, 18 leaves :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (20 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142530,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0773/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38082,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0773/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a600b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Matzko, John J.","contributorId":79459,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Matzko","given":"John J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161026,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Naqvi, Mohammed Ibne","contributorId":55826,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Naqvi","given":"Mohammed","email":"","middleInitial":"Ibne","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161025,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Red mudstone and limestone characterize the strata in the lower sequence, and sandstone and dolomite characterize the strata in the upper sequence. Initial deposits of the lower sequence are-red mudstone probably of no older age than about middle Morrowan, except in the subsurface of southwestern Wyoming where early Morrowan strata may be present. The basal red mudstone lies unconformably upon Mississippian strata except in the vicinity of the ancestral Rocky Mountain Front Range where they lie upon Precambrian rocks. The red beds grade upward to interbedded limestone and mudstone of late Morrowan and early Atokan age; but the limestone strata are absent at many places because of beveling on a Middle Pennsylvanian erosional surface.</p><p>Initial deposits of the upper sequence are heterogeneous and locally may be thinly bedded red, green, or varicolored mudstone, sandstone, or dolomite of late Atokan to early Des Moinesian age. Basal strata of the upper sequence lie unconformably upon lower Pennsylvanian strata at most places in Wyoming; but locally, where the lower Pennsylvanian strata are absent by erosion or possibly by nondeposition, the upper sequence lies upon Mississippian rocks. The upper sequence in central and northwestern Wyoming comprises mostly dolomite in the lower part but grades upward into mostly sandstone no younger than Des Moinesian. The upper sequence in eastern Wyoming comprises sandstone and dolomite about equally and also includes Upper Pennsylvanian strata as young as Virgilian. Upper Pennsylvanian strata also occur as part of the upper sequence in the thrust belt in western Wyoming. At the disposal site, wastewater is stored in two 850-acre (344-ha) lagoons and then spray-irrigated on crop land. About 70 miles (105 km) of drainage tile, which underlies the irrigated land, has caused the water table to be lowered substantially. The decline in water levels has been partially offset by irrigation and leakage from the lagoons; at some places the water table is higher than it was prior to construction. Predictive simulations by the model were used to study the effects of varying tile drainage, amount of irrigation water applied, lagoon leakage, and natural ground-water recharge. If the effectiveness of the tile to collect drainage is reduced by 75 percent, large areas within the wastewater site would become waterlogged. However, the effect outside of the wastewater site would be negligible.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7899","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Geology Division, Michigan Department of Natural Resources","usgsCitation":"McDonald, M.G., and Fleck, W.B., 1978, Model analysis of the impact on ground-water conditions of the Muskegon County wastewater disposal system, Michigan: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-99, iv, 63 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7899.","productDescription":"iv, 63 p.","costCenters":[{"id":382,"text":"Michigan Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":412958,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0099/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143091,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0099/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","county":"Muskegon County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -86.09264373779297,\n              43.21593563039921\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.09264373779297,\n              43.292200750082785\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.98518371582031,\n              43.292200750082785\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.98518371582031,\n              43.21593563039921\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.09264373779297,\n              43.21593563039921\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a26e4b07f02db60fdd6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McDonald, Michael G.","contributorId":47352,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McDonald","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161076,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fleck, William B.","contributorId":17587,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fleck","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161075,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The length of rupture of the fault as a function of earthquake magnitude is accounted for, and ground motion estimates at the site are made using the magnitude of the earthquake and the closest distance from the site to the rupture zone. Uncertainty in the earthquake magnitude, in the rupture given magnitude, in the location of the rupture zone on the fault, in the maximum possible magnitude of earthquakes, and in the ground motion at the site given the earthquake, its size, rupture length, and location, are accounted for explicitly. FRISK (Fault RISK) was written to take advantage of repeated calculations, so that seismic hazard analyses for several ground motion parameters (for instance, peak ground acceleration, velocity, and displacement), and for several sites, are most efficiently made with one execution of the program rather than with repeated executions.\r\n\r\nThe program uses a step-truncated exponential distribution for earthquake magnitude, a lognormal distribution for rupture length given magnitude, a uniform distribution for rupture location on faults, and a lognormal distribution of site amplitude given magnitude of the earthquake and distance from the rupture zone to the site. The program has been structured so that other functions may easily be substituted if this is appropriate for a particular problem; for example a wide range of deterministic or probabilistic geophysical models for estimating ground motion may be incorporated, and the program will yield probabilistic estimates of seismic hazard.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr781007","usgsCitation":"McGuire, R.K., 1978, FRISK: computer program for seismic risk analysis using faults as earthquake sources: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-1007, 71 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr781007.","productDescription":"71 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143031,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1007/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38123,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1007/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e47b3e4b07f02db49eafb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McGuire, Robin K.","contributorId":86339,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McGuire","given":"Robin","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161101,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The area, defined as that in which the nodules contain more than 1.8 percent nickel plus copper, is about 2.5 million square kilometers in size, and about half of it is assumed to contain nodules in concentrations greater than 5 kg/m<sup>2</sup> and averaging 11.9 kg/m<sup>2</sup>. Assuming that 20 percent of the nodules in this area of 1.25 million square kilometers would be recoverable, its potentially recoverable resources are about 2.1 billion dry metric tons of nodules averaging about 25 percent Mn, 1.3 percent Ni, 1 percent Cu, 0.22 percent Co, and 0.05 percent Mo--enough to support about 27 mining operations each producing an average of 75 million metric tons of nodules over their lifetimes. Estimates based on other plausible assumptions would be higher or lower, but of the same order of magnitude. Thus it seems probable that the magnitude of the potentially recoverable nodule resources of the Clarion-Clipperton prime area--the most promising now known--is at most in the range of several tens of the average-size operations postulated.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78814","usgsCitation":"McKelvey, V., Wright, N.A., and Rowland, R.W., 1978, Manganese nodule resources in the northeastern equatorial Pacific: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-814, 36 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78814.","productDescription":"36 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":425091,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0814/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143391,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0814/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64ae2a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McKelvey, V.E.","contributorId":85161,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McKelvey","given":"V.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161137,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wright, Nancy A.","contributorId":28586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"Nancy","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161135,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Rowland, Robert W.","contributorId":42200,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rowland","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161136,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The last known eruption occurred about 200 radiocarbon years ago. Eruptions during the last 10,000 years produced lava flows and domes on and around the flanks of Mount Shasta, and pyroclastic flows from summit and flank vents extended as far as 20 km from the summit. Most of these eruptions also produced large mudflows, many of which reached more than several tens of kilometers from Mount Shasta. Future eruptions like those of the past may endanger the communities of Weed, Mount Shasta, McCloud, and Dunsmuir located on or near the flanks of Mount Shasta. This report describes the likely nature of future eruptions and the threat that they present to people and property situated around Mount Shasta; accompanying maps delineate areas likely to be affected during future eruptions in the vicinity of Mount Shasta. Future eruptions will most likely consist of lava flows, domes, and pyroclastic flows. Lava flows and pyroclastic flows may affect low and flat- lying ground almost anywhere within about 20 km of the summit of Mount Shasta, and mudflows may cover valley floors and other low areas as much as several tens of kilometers from the volcano. Mount Shasta is not likely to erupt large volumes of ash in the future; areas subject to the greatest risk from air-fall tephra are located mainly east and within about 50 km of the summit of the volcano.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78827","usgsCitation":"Miller, C.D., 1978, Potential hazards from future eruptions in the vicinity of Mount Shasta Volcano, northern California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-827, Report: iii, 36 p.; 3 Plates: 35.39 x 36.54 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78827.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 36 p.; 3 Plates: 35.39 x 36.54 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":426518,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0827/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426517,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0827/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426516,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0827/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":426515,"rank":2,"type":{"id":27,"text":"Table"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0827/table-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143459,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0827/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Mount Shasta","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.33155045949158,\n              41.49913881282572\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.33155045949158,\n              41.289319640887754\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.08122440150389,\n              41.289319640887754\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.08122440150389,\n              41.49913881282572\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.33155045949158,\n              41.49913881282572\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6ae014","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, C. Water for domestic and stock use is available from the upper part of the Hell Creek Formation of Late Cretaceous age and the lower part of the Fort Union Formation of Paleocene age. Water for irrigation can be obtained from alluvium of Holocene and Pleistocene age along the Powder River. The Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer yields as much as 188 gallons per minute to wells as deep as 999 feet, but most well yields are 20 gallons per minute or less. The upper part of the Hell Creek Formation yields as much as 12 gallons per minute to wells as deep as 465 feet. The lower part of the Fort Union Formation yields a maximum of 25 gallons per minute to wells as deep as 373 feet. The alluvium of the Powder River yields 600 gallons per minute to the only known irrigation well, which is 40 feet deep.</p><p>Water from the Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer generally contains sodium and bicarbonate or sulfate as the major ions; dissolved-solids concentration is as much as 1,700 milligrams per liter. Sodium, bicarbonate, and sulfate were the major ions in two samples from the upper part of the Hell Creek Formation; the dissolved-solids concentration was 840 milligrams per liter in both samples. Water from the Fort Union Formation contains principally sodium, sulfate, and bicarbonate ions; the dissolved-solids concentration ranges from 780 to 2,300 milligrams per liter. One water sample from the alluvium contained principally sodium and sulfate ions and had a dissolved-solids concentration of 2,300 milligrams per liter.</p><p>The Powder River is the only perennial stream in the study area. Because of this dynamic nature, special consideration must be made in planning for development, and. caution must be exercised in site selection for facilities to be emplaced in the coastal zone. All types of coastal processes from continuously active normal processes to the low frequency-high intensity rare event must be considered. Site-specific evaluation-s considering the broad range of possible processes must precede initiation of development. \r\n\r\nAn example of the relation between coastal processes and a proposed resource treatment facility is presented for Icy Bay, Alaska. Icy Bay is the only sheltered bay near many of the offshore tracts leased for petroleum exploration in the 1976 northern Gulf of Alaska OCS (Outer Continental Shelf) lease sale. Consequently, it has been selected as a primary onshore staging site for the support of offshore exploration and development. The environment of Icy Bay has many potentially hazardous features, including a submarine moraine at the bay mouth and actively calving glaciers at the bay's head which produce many icebergs. But most significant from the point of view of locating onshore facilities and pipeline corridors are the high rates of shoreline erosion and sediment deposition. If pipelines or any onshore staging facilities are to be placed in the coastal areas of Icy Bay, then the dynamic changes in shoreline position must be considered so that man-made structures will not be eroded away or be silted in before the completion of development.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791693","usgsCitation":"Molnia, B.F., 1978, Impact of coastal processes on resource development with an example from Icy Bay, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1693, 13 leaves, [6] leaves of plates :maps ;28 cm.; (20 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791693.","productDescription":"13 leaves, [6] leaves of plates :maps ;28 cm.; (20 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142318,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1693/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38212,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1693/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5f9c3e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Molnia, Bruce F. bmolnia@usgs.gov","contributorId":4002,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Molnia","given":"Bruce","email":"bmolnia@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":410,"text":"National Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":161289,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The three stages are interdependent, occur in sequence, and are of different duration. Deposits of the first stage--the largest in size--are removed to positions further downstream by the activity of second- and third-stage landslides. \r\n\r\nFirst-stage landslides are represented by huge slumped masses derived from steep bedrock slopes in the canyon heads; the material moves down the principal stream drainage, which may be completely filled with debris. Second-stage activity develops as streams cut a network of branching channels into the massive first-stage deposit. The second-stage landslides are chiefly slumps from the older slide mass and from adjacent bedrock slopes. The movement of these slides generally is downslope toward actively eroding drainages. Third-stage activity includes mudflows that accompany the spring melting of snowpack. The debris moves down the stream channels to depositional reaches on major fans. Removal of sufficient amounts of the first-stage landslide mass to the fan by second- and third-stage events resets the bedrock slope of the main drainage for another first-stage event.\r\n\r\nThe first-stage landslides in the Wrightwood area are of prehistoric origin, and their recurrence interval in any one canyon is probably several thousand years. The active duration of a first-stage landslide is one to several thousand years. Second-stage landslides last one to several years and are apparently preceded and triggered by a series of high-precipitation winters. The duration of observed third-stage (spring mudflow) sequences ranges from a few days to as much as six weeks; peak mudflow activity apparently results when a-heavy spring snowmelt occurs during a period of second-stage landslide activity.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr781079","usgsCitation":"Morton, D.M., and Campbell, R., 1978, Cyclic landsliding at Wrightwood, southern California: A preliminary report: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-1079, 23 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr781079.","productDescription":"23 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":38274,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1079/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143861,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1079/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":407189,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74957.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Wrightwood","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.6472,\n              34.3333\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.6083,\n              34.3333\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.6083,\n              34.3667\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.6472,\n              34.3667\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.6472,\n              34.3333\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67ebb3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Morton, Douglas M. scamp@usgs.gov","contributorId":4102,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morton","given":"Douglas","email":"scamp@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":161344,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Campbell, Russell H.","contributorId":91074,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Campbell","given":"Russell H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161345,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The annual mean and annual standard deviation were chosen to represent the development potential of the water resource, while the mean, standard deviation, and the 50-year recurrence interval of the annual flood series were chosen to represent flood potential. Low-flow characteristics were not used because of the inability to model them by regression analysis. Ephemeral streams in the vicinity of the Columbia Plateau were ignored for the same reason.</p><p>The results of the study indicate that the standard errors of estimate of the regression relations were good approximations of the medians of the Bayesian distributions of estimates of inaccuracy and that for the streamflow variables used in the study, little if any improvement can be expected in the regression relations by the collection of additional streamflow data. Improved transferability of streamflow information for these variables has a prerequisite of more accurate information-transfer models.</p><p>It is therefore recommended that the future streamflow-data network contain only those streamflow stations needed to provide data for (1) the design or operation of water-resources projects, (2) the investigation and study of water resources, and (3) monitoring long-term trends in streamflow.<br><br></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78167","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the
