Regional studies suggest that three granitic plutons within the wildemess, the Running Creek pluton on the southwestern border of the wildemess, the Painted Rocks pluton on the southern border of the wildemess, and the Whistling Pig pluton in the west-central portion of the wildemess, have low potential for molybdenite deposits, but detailed surface investigations failed to recognize a deposit. Placer deposits in the Elk Summit area on the north side of the wildemess contain subeconomic resources of niobium- (columbium-) bearing ilmenite. A vein on the northeast side of the wildemess at t~e Cliff mine at Saint Joseph Peak contains subeconomic silver-copper-lead resources. The wilderness has no known potential for oil and gas, coal, geothermal resources, or other energy-related commodities.

In this way, water deficiencies occurring during the annual dry season can be offset by surplus water obtained during the wet season and injected underground. Most of south Florida is underlain by several deep, confined, carbonate waterbearing zones which might be suitable for freshwater storage. These zones are in the Avon Park, Ocala, Suwannee, Tampa, and Hawthorn Formations. Experimental freshwater injection systems have been operated at five locations with promising, but not fully definitive, results. A determination of the feasibility of freshwater injection at a selected site begins with an assessment of the local geologic suitability. Verification of feasibility, however, requires injection and recovery tests to be performed at the site. Recovery efficiency, a measure of the success of the operation, is the amount of potable water, expressed as a percentage of the volume injected, which can be recovered before its salinity, or the concentration of other chemical constituents present in the native aquifer water, increases to the point that the recovered water is no longer useable.

Multiple-regression techniques were used to define the relationship between a suite of basin and climatic characteristics and flood peaks in three flood-frequency regions at a total of 95 sites. Station flood-frequency data were computed following guidelines in Bulletin 17A of the U.S. Water Resources Council. The frequency analyses are based upon weighted skew values, adjustments for high and low outliers, and historic peak data. \r\n\r\nRegression equations for estimation of peak discharges for 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.04, 0.02, and 0.01 exceedance probabilities are provided for ungaged sites. An improved sample of flood peaks and gaging stations and the definition of three flood-frequency regions reduced the standard errors of estimate by about 5 percent over those for the 1977 relations. Included in this analysis were the synthetic flood-frequency data at 8 sites computed using historic climatic data and 10 parameters optimized by calibration of the U.S. Geological Survey's rainfall-runoff model with storm data observed over 11 years. \r\n\r\nThe equations are applicable to streams unaffected by regulation where the usable manmade storage is less than 4.5 million cubic feet per square mile, or by diversions or urbanization. The equations are restricted to sites where the basin indices are within a specified range outside of eastern Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, or Nantucket Counties. The purpose of this report is to release a preferred set of correlations based upon marine mollusk biostratigraphy. The senior author, with the help of B. E. Law, has acquired, synthesized, compiled, and interpreted data from various sources. These include selected published documents (see \"References Cited\") and unpublished reports of fossil identifications by W. A. Cobban who examined collections made by the late J. R. Gill. Numerous measured sections of Gill's were also utilized. It must be emphasized that all interpretations on this chart are based on information obtained from these sources and the senior author has yet to substantiate these correlations in the field. Not all data from the area of this study is included herein because it is either repetitive in nature or its reliability is uncertain. This uncertainty is due to the ambiguity inherent in both fossil identification and stratigraphic interpretation. Questionable unpublished material has been omitted while published data which is inconsistent with the senior author's correlations may be found in the footnotes portion of this report. The rock units are assigned to a range of ammonites that have been related to an absolute time scale. The ammonite zonation and age boundaries are adapted from Obradovich and Cobban (1975). \"D\" numbers are provided for each geographic locality where fossils were collected and described by personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey. These fossils may be accessed at the offices of the Survey in Lakewood, Colorado.
