The study analyzed the probability of spill occurrence, likely paths of the spills, and locations in space and time of such objects as recreational and biological resources likely to be vulnerable. These results combined to yield estimates of the overall oilspill risk associated with development of the proposed lease area. This risk is compared to the existing oilspill risk from existing leases in the area. The analysis implicityly includes estimates of weathering rates and slick dispersion and an indication of the possible mitigating effects of cleanups. Fault plane solutions were obtained for 80 microearthquakes in a 900 square km area centered on the Busch fault during a one year period preceding the Thanksgiving Day, 1974 Hollister earthquake. Strike slip motion occurred in 65 of the quakes, mainly at active spots on the Sargent, Castro, Busch, and Calaveras faults. There are 11 thrust-type and 4 normal-type solutions. No discernable rotation of compressional axes was observed to precede the Thanksgiving Day earthquake.

In June 1967 the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a seismic-refraction survey consisting of two profiles parallel to the San Andreas fault; one in the Gabilan Range and one in the Diablo Range in central California. Each profile was about 200 km long and had five shot points distributed along it such that recording coverage is especially dense in the three inner shot points near the center of the profile. A description of the survey is provided by Stewart (1968). Shot-point locations are shown in Figure 1 and shot information is listed in Tables 1 and 2.

This report describes nuclear power reactor sites in the southeastern United States. The map indicates the location of all sites as of July 1976 in the conterminous United States, and a later published report will include all sites. The project is one of several in the National Environmental Overview Program of the U.S. Geological Survey which will identify and summarize geologic, hydrologic, and topographic topics associated with future energy, mineral resource, and land use development in the United States.

The increasing use of atomic energy creates a need for the dissemination of information about nuclear reactors. Because power plant safety is related, in part, to the geology and seismology of the plant area and surroundings, this study is focused primarily on that relationship.

Information about the geology and seismology is summarized from reports prepared by consultants to utility companies and submitted by the companies to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (formerly the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission) in support of the application for a construction permit.

Coordinates for site locations were established by the author from descriptive information in the reports. The U.S. Geological Survey 7-1/2 minute topographic maps were used in confirming the geographic location of the sites. The coordinates may in some cases represent the planned location rather than the exact actual location.

This map shows the relative amounts of soil and hard bedrock within the upper 6 feet (1.8 m) of the land surface.  (See schematic section.)  It provides information useful for broad-scale land-use decisions.  The map is based on reconnaissance field studies and aerial-photograph interpretation.  The depth of soil and weathered rock was measured directly in roadcuts and other excavations and was estimated from seismic profiles in areas of few or no excavations or outcrops.  Secondary characteristics of map units, such as percentage of outcrop in a given area, steepness of slope, type and amount of vegetation cover, and general appearance of the landscape, were used in drawing the boundaries between map units.  Localities were assigned to the different map units by field inspection; lines separating the different map units were then drawn by aerial-photograph interpretation and were transferred photogrammetrically to the base map.

A ground-water-quality monitoring network is being designed for Idaho. The primary objectives of the network are to (1) determine the present quality of the State's ground water, (2) provide continual monitoring of groundwater quality for water-management purposes, and (3) serve as a warning system of undesirable changes in ground-water quality.

\n

Data are compiled for geohydrologic conditions, groundwater quality, cultural elements, and pollution sources.  A \"Hydrologic Unit Priority Index\" is calculated from these data to select priority areas for monitoring purposes.

\n

New ground-water-quality data were collected where existing data were lacking and at some sites that were previously sampled. Old and new data at common sites correlated well, indicating that the water quality has not changed significantly. Most ground water in Idaho is of good quality for common uses; however, water quality may pose problems in local areas. The problems result from both natural and human causes.

\n

The potential for pollution of the aquifers is expected to be greatest in areas of greatest development. In Idaho, population centers and industries tend to be in areas of privately owned irrigated and arable · land. Therefore, these areas are of primary concern for monitoring ground-water quality. Other areas requiring monitoring include those with second-home development, mining and its related processes, and radioactive-waste disposal.

A mineral resource evaluation of the Rock River Canyon Wilderness Study Area, Alger County, Mich., was completed in 1975 by personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The area consists of approximately 22 km2 in the Hiawatha National Forest.

Rocks exposed in the area include sandstone, shaly sandstone, dolomitic sandstone, sandy dolomite, and a minor amount of conglomerate; these rocks range in age from possibly Precambrian to early Middle Ordovician. A minor amount of unconsolidated glacier-transported debris was deposited during Pleistocene time.

No deposits of either metallic or nonmetallic minerals were found. Although resources of stone, sand, and gravel exist in the study area, they are considered to have small economic potential; similar materials are readily available and easily accessible in the surrounding region.

Free gold and silver, tellurides, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite are in and associated with quartz veins and quartz veinlet stockworks. Country rocks consist of a sequence of pyroclastic and transported pyroclastic rocks of the Halaban Group that are locally highly silicified and potassium-feldspathized. \r\n\r\nTwo known ore zones occur in a north-trending zone of quartz veins and breccias, faults, alteration, and metallization approximately 400 m wide and 1,000 m long. The ancient and recent workings are located in the northern part of this zone, and a significant new discovery, the southern mineralized zone, is in the southern part. A potential resource of 1.1 million tons of 27 g/t Au and 73 g/t Ag ore is contained in the southern mineralized zone. \r\n\r\nGeologic setting of ore bodies is similar in both zones. Significant mineralization occurs only within altered and fractured agglomerate directly beneath a cap of fine-grained tuff and sedimentary rock where the layered rocks are cut by metalliferous quartz veins.
