The results of these examinations were not used to derive quantitative predictions of the outcome of reclamation work but rather to determine the general requirements for revegetation success. Locally, reclamation efforts are affected by climate, especially precipitation; the landform of the restored surface; the nature of the overburden material; the nature of the surface soil; and the natural ecological system. The goals of reclamation efforts are now broader than ever. Regulations call not only for reducing the steepness of the final surface and establishing a cover of mostly perennial native vegetation, but for restoring the land for specific land uses, achieving diversity both in types of plants and in number of species, and reintroduction of biological and ecological processes. If specific sites are monitored over a long enough period of time, quantitative predictions of success for individual mines may be possible, and such predictions can be included in environmental impact statements to help in the decision-making process. The results of this study indicate that current reclamation objectives can be met when the reclamation effort is designed on the basis of site-specific needs and when existing technology is used.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir872","usgsCitation":"Narten, P., Litner, S., Allingham, J., Foster, L., Larsen, D., and McWreath, H., 1983, Reclamation of mined lands in the western coal region: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 872, xi, 56 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir872.","productDescription":"xi, 56 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":117658,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0872/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31484,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0872/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6ce4b07f02db63e7c9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Narten, Perry F.","contributorId":59780,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Narten","given":"Perry F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148989,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Litner, S.F.","contributorId":31742,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Litner","given":"S.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148987,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Allingham, J.W.","contributorId":85573,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Allingham","given":"J.W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148991,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Foster, Lee","contributorId":61403,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Foster","given":"Lee","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148990,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Larsen, D.M.","contributorId":32144,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Larsen","given":"D.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148988,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"McWreath, H.C.","contributorId":104475,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McWreath","given":"H.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148992,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

In connection with the proposed brine lake, the U.S. Geological Survey was requested to: (1) Define the existing ground-water conditions in the shallow fresh-water system of the project area; and (2) project the post-construction effects of the proposed lake on the fresh-water aquifer, especially in relation to hydraulic-head changes but also with respect to possible changes in the chemical quality of the ground water.
\n
The fresh-water aquifer in the project area is a shallow water-table system with relatively fresh water (generally a calcium sulfate type) that contains approximately 500 to 5,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids. The aquifer consists of Permian rocks with very small values of hydraulic conductivity and overlies a brine system (sodium chloride type) that is even less permeable. A thin transition zone separates the fresh-water aquifer and the brine system. Small quantities of infiltration from precipitation throughout the area's watershed constitute the recharge to the aquifer. Discharge from the aquifer consists of the small base flow along creeks; well discharge is negligible.
\n
Two-dimensional mathematical computer models were developed for aquifer simulation of: (1) Steady-state conditions in a fresh-water system and (2) transient conditions in a brine- fresh-water system where the density effects of the brine are considered. The main results 'of projecting the effects of the proposed Truscott Brine Lake on the fresh-water aquifer are: (1) Hydraulic head rises of 5 to 40 feet would be confined to areas near the proposed dam and along the lake shoreline, and (2) migration of salt water downstream from the dam generally would be limited to less than 1 mile and apparently would not reach equilibrium during the 100-year duration of the project. The modeling efforts did not include possible effects related to hydrodynamic dispersion in the brine- fresh-water system. Possible changes in the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer, due to physical and chemical interactions in the brine and fresh-water environments, also were not considered.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri834026","usgsCitation":"Garza, S., 1983, Projected effects of proposed chloride-control projects on shallow ground water– Preliminary results for the Wichita River basin, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4026, Report: v, 40 p.; 8 Plates: 13.37 x 9.25 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834026.","productDescription":"Report: v, 40 p.; 8 Plates: 13.37 x 9.25 inches or smaller","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":56131,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4026/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56127,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4026/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56126,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4026/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56123,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4026/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56125,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4026/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158575,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4026/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":56124,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4026/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":110157,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35671.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"35671"},{"id":56130,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4026/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56129,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4026/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56128,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4026/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Wichita River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -99.782,\n              33.694\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.964,\n              33.694\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.964,\n              33.833\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.782,\n              33.833\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.782,\n              33.694\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d9d4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Garza, Sergio","contributorId":88713,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garza","given":"Sergio","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197811,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Channel capacities in Brown County are as little as 200 cubic feet per second, and spring flooding can be expected on an average of every other year. The river has potential for extended periods of flooding an average of once in 10 years. Extended periods of no flow during late-summer and winter also can be expected. Excluding flows of a very large magnitude, average travel time between Columbia and Scotland (a distance of 382 river miles) is estimated to be 25-30 days for most flows. The upstream reach of the James River within the Lake Dakota Plain generally loses discharge with distance whereas the downstream reach generally gains discharge with distance. Ground water - surface water interaction does not appear to be significant along upstream reaches of the James River. Some interaction, although not quantified, does occur in Hanson, Davison, and Yankton Counties. Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located just downsteam from the State line and containing Sand and Mud Lakes (combined capacity = 24,600 acre-feet), is a major source of water loss between LaMoure, N. Dak. and Columbia, S. Dak. Gross evaporation losses from the lakes during 1969-81 is estimated to have been slightly more than 29,000 acre-feet per year. Unaccounted-for losses in the lake system are estimated to have been slightly more than 19,000 acre-feet per year. In this technique, aluminum is complexed with 8-hydroxyquinoline at pH 8.3 to minimize interferences, then extracted with methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). The extract is analyzed colorimetrically at 395 nm. This technique is used to analyze two forms of monomeric Al, nonlabile (organic complexes) and labile (free, Al, Al sulfate, fluoride and hydroxide complexes). A detection limit 2 ug/L is possible with 25-ml samples and 10-ml extracts. The detection limit can be decreased by increasing the volume of the sample and (or) decreasing the volume of the methyl isobutyl ketone extract. The analytical uncertainty of this method is approximately + or - 5 percent. The standard addition technique provides a recovery test for this technique and ensures precision in samples of low Al concentrations. The average percentage recovery of the added Al plus the amount originally present was 99 percent. Data obtained from analyses of filtered standard solutions indicated that Al is adsorbed on various types of filters. However, the relationship between Al concentrations and adsorption remains linear. A test on standard solutions also indicated that Al is not adsorbed on nitric acid-washed polyethylene and polypropylene bottle wells. Gas production is mainly from Tertiary sandstone reservoirs of Miocene age. Major oil production, in order of importance, is from Cretaceous, Paleocene, and Jurassic carbonate reservoirs in the Reforma and offshore Campeche areas. Several small oil fields have been discovered in Cretaceous carbonate reservoirs in west-central Guatemala, and one major discovery has been reported in northwestern Guatemala. Small- to medium-sized oil accumulations also occur in Miocene sandstone reservoirs on salt structures in the Isthmus Saline basin of western Tabasco State, Mexico. Almost all important production is in salt structure traps or on domes and anticlines that may be related to deep-seated salt structures. Some minor oil production has occurred in Cretaceous carbonate reservoirs in a buried overthrust belt along the west flank of the Veracruz basin. \r\n\r\nThe sedimentary cover of Paleozoic through Tertiary rocks ranges in thickness from about 6,000 m (20,000 ft) to as much as 12,000 m (40,000 ft) or more in most of the region. Paleozoic marine carbonate and clastic rocks 1,000 to 2,000 m (3,300 to 6,500 ft) thick overlie the metamorphic and igneous basement in part of the region; Triassic through Middle Jurassic red beds and evaporite deposits, including halite, apparently are present throughout the region, deposited in part in a Triassic graben system. Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian) through Cretaceous rocks make up the bulk of the Mesozoic regional carbonate bank complex, which dominates most of the area. Tertiary marine and continental clastic rocks, some of deep water origin, 3,000 to 10,000 m (10,000 to 35,000 ft) thick, are present in the coastal plain Tertiary basins. These beds grade eastward into a carbonate sequence that overlies the Mesozoic carbonate complex on the Yucatan platform. \r\n\r\nDuring the past 10 years, about 50 large oil fields were discovered in the Reforma and offshore Campeche areas. Oil is produced from intensely microfractured Cretaceous, Paleocene, and Upper Jurassic dolomite reservoirs on blockfaulted salt swells or domes. Most fields are located in the \r\n\r\nMesozoic carbonate-bank margin and forebank talus (Tamabra) facies, which passes through the offshore Campeche and onshore Reforma areas. Oil source rocks are believed to be organic-rich shales and shaly carbonate rocks of latest Jurassic and possibly Early Cretaceous age. At least six of the Mesozoic discoveries are giant or supergiant fields. The largest is the Cantarell complex (about 8 billion to 10 billion barrels (BB)) in the offshore Campeche area and the Bermudez complex (about 8 BB) in the Reforma onshore area. Oil columns are unusually large (from 50 m to as much as 1,000 m, or 160 ft to 3,300 ft). Production rates are extremely high, averaging at least 3,000 to 5,000 barrels of oil per day (bo/d); some wells produce more than 20,000 bo/d, particularly in the offshore Campeche area, where 30,000- to 60,000-bo/d wells are reported. \r\n\r\nTertiary basin fields produce primarily from Miocene sandstone reservoirs. About 50 of these are oil fields ranging from 1 million barrels (MMB) to 200 MMB in size, located on faulted salt structures in the Isthmus Saline basin. Another 30 are gas or gas-condensate fields of a few billion cubic feet to 3 trillion to 4 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) located on salt structures or probable salt structures in the Macuspana, Comalcalco, Isthmus Saline, and Veracruz basins. Source rocks for the gas are believed to be carbonaceous shales interbedded with the sandstone reservoir bodies. \r\nIdentified reserves in the southeastern Mexico-Guatemala \r\narea, almost all in the Mesozoic fields, are about 53 BB of oil, \r\n3 BB of natural gas liquids, and 65 Tcf of gas. The Tar Sand Triangle area, which contains about 15 billion barrels of oil, is the largest. This area and the Sunnyside and P R Springs areas contain more than three-fourths of the Utah reserves. About 88,000 acre-feet of water per year would be required for a commercial tar-sand industry producing about 365,000 barrels per day. At this rate, most of the recoverable oil would be mined within 30 years. About 22,000 acre-feet of water per year would be required for a commercial tar-sand industry producing about 83,000 barrels per day. Impacts on local hydrology would be greatest in the Tar Sand Triangle, Sunnyside, and P R Springs areas. The water was moderately hard (hardness greater than 60 but less than 120 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate). The concentrations of each of these constituents were usually greatest during winter, especially during the first few years of the study, but decreased significantly as discharges of municipal wastes were systematically and progressively diverted to treatment facilities downstream from the reservoir.
\n
Thermal stratification in Lake Arlington usually begins during March or April and persists until October. Thermal stratification has resulted in significant seasonal and areal variations in the concentration of dissolved oxygen, dissolved iron, dissolved manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Oxygen utilized in the decay of organic matter is not replenished during periods of summer stagnation, and water below depths of 30 to 40 feet usually contains less than 2 milligrams per liter of dissolved oxygen during stagnation. Even though heated effluent from an electrical generating plant is returned to the reservoir at site GC and causes an elevation of water temperature, average dissolved oxygen levels at this site are not significantly different from levels at other sites.
\n
During summer stagnation, reducing conditions result in the dissolution of iron and manganese from bottom deposits at deep sites in the reservoir. At site AQ, a deep site near Arlington Dam, dissolved iron concentrations in water near the bottom during summer stagnation ranged from less than 10 to 1,100 micrograms per liter and averaged about 640 micrograms per liter. Dissolved manganese concentrations near the bottom at site AC during summer staynation ranged from 20 to 2,700 micrograms per liter and averaged about 1,500 micrograms per liter. The concentrations of dissolved iron and dissolved manganese in water throughout the reservoir during winter circulation and in water near the reservoir surface during summer stagnation averaged less than 50 micrograms per liter.
\n
Seasonal temperature and dissolved oxygen cycles resulted in the recycling of dissolved iron and dissolved manganese between the water and bottom sediments. However, no significant accumulation of these constituents within the reservoir was detected during the study.
\n
The concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus are greatest during summer stagnation in water near the bottom at deep sites. At site AC during the summer, the concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen in the hypolimnion averaged about 0.9 milligram per liter, and the concentration of total phosphorus near the bottom averaged about 0.2 milligram per liter. The concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen in the epilimnion at site AC averaged about 0.1 milligram per liter; the concentrations of total phosphorus averaged less than 0.1 milligram per liter.
\n
The densities and composition of algal populations varied seasonally. At site AC, total algae counts ranged from 200 to 240,000 cells per mi Hi liter and averaged about 50,000 cells per milliliter. At site FC, total algae counts ranged from 1,000 to 290,000 cells per milliliter and averaged about 56,000 cells per milliliter. This report presents the results of using an automated constant-rate dyedilution technique to measure discharge at two sites in Madison, Wisconsin. The sites selected have well-defined stage-discharge ratings, developed during previous hydrologic studies. One site has a 60-inch diameter concrete storm sewer and the other a concrete-lined open trapezoidal channel.
\n
Equipment selected to automate the method included a portable automatic water sampler, a four-channel event recorder, and a variable-speed peristaltic pump for dye injection. The area is on the south flank of the Backbone anticline; the rocks dip to the south at 5o-45o. Alluvium along James Fork consists of sandy and clayey silt and may be as much as 30 feet thick.\r\nWater in bedrock is under artesian conditions. The depth to water in most wells is less than 20 feet below the surface; a few wells flow. Yields of most wells probably are less than 5 gallons per minute. Water from nine wells was a sodium carbonate or sodium mixed anion type; dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 294 to 1,250 milligrams per liter. No relationship between variations in chemistry of ground water and well depth, geographic distribution, or geologic formation is apparent.\r\n\r\nJames Fork has flow most of the time and discharge exceeds 25 cubic feet per second about one-half the time. The mean dissolved-solids concentration in James Fork water ranged from 224 milligrams per liter near Williams, Oklahoma, to 332 milligrams per liter near Hackett, Arkansas. Water in James Fork is a calcium magnesium sulfate type about 75 percent of the time. Maximum suspended sediment discharge was 2,720 tons per day. Silt-clay particles (diameters less than 0.062 millimeter) are the dominant sediment size.\r\n\r\nPotential hydrologic effects of surface mining for coal include: (1) Creation of additional water storage in surface-mine ponds, (2) changes in rock permeability and ground-water storage, (3) changes in runoff and streamflow characteristics, (4) changes in drainage patterns, and (5) changes in the chemical quality and sediment load of James Fork. Although mining may increase the quantities of sediment and dissolved minerals added to James Fork, detection of these increases would be difficult because the potentially mineable area is very small in proportion to the total area of the basin.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wri834013","usgsCitation":"Marcher, M., 1983, Preliminary appraisal of the hydrology of the Rock Island area, Le Flore County, Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4013, iv, 39 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834013.","productDescription":"iv, 39 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156904,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4013/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54480,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4013/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54481,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4013/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54482,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4013/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54483,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4013/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67ca7e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marcher, M.V.","contributorId":9267,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marcher","given":"M.V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":194784,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Kings Bay and Cumberland Sound , the site of the Poseidon Submarine Base in southeast Georgia, are experiencing high rates of sediment deposition and accumulation, which are causing serious navigational and operational problems. Velocity, bathymetry, turbidity, and bottom-material data suggest that the area in the vicinity of lower Kings Bay is accumulating deposits of suspended sediment transported from Cumberland Sound on the floodtide and from upper Kings Bay and the tidal marsh drained by Marianna Creek on the ebbtide. Suspended-sediment discharges computed for consecutive 13-hour ebbtides and floodtides showed that a net quantity of suspended sediment was transported seaward from upper Kings Bay and Marianna Creek. A net landward transport of suspended sediment computed at the St. Marys Entrance indicated areas seaward of St. Marys Entrance may be supplying sediment to the shoaling areas of the estuary, including lower Kings Bay. Excessive rainfall (12.6 inches in Raytown, MO) caused flash flooding during the nighttime and early daylight hours. Four deaths and damages unofficially estimated in excess of $30 million, occurred in the three-county area of Jackson, Cass, and Clay counties. Peak discharges were determined at 12 current or discontinued streamflow-gaging stations and 17 miscellaneous sites. Flood peaks and volumes at many locations exceeded estimated 100-year recurrence-interval floods and equaled or exceeded the 1977 floods in some drainage basins. Significant flooding occurred in the Blue, East Fork Little Blue, and Little Blue River basins and in the Rock, Wilkerson, Sni-A-Bar, Shoal, and Big Creek drainage basins.
