Declines of pressure head in the artesian aquifer have ranged from 3 to 12 feet since 1974 when increased ground-water pumping began. A comparison of water-level measurements made in September 1957 and September 1977 shows declines of more than 30 feet in places in the artesian aquifer. Camas Prairie aquifers are recharged by percolation from streams and by precipitation on the valley floor. Estimated mean annual recharge to the artesian aquifer is 37,000 acre-feet. Vertical recharge from the artesian aquifer to the overlying water-table aquifer is estimated to be 20,000 acre-feet annually. Declines in artesian pressure caused by increased irrigation pumping will result in a reduction of recharge from the artesian aquifer to the water-table aquifer. Yields from irrigation wells in the prairie ranged from 400 to slightly more than 2,000 gallons per minute. Flows in Camas Creek in the 1977 drought year averaged 9,400 acre-feet, compared with 138,000 acre-feet in a normal year. Surface and ground waters sampled in the basin were either a sodium or calcium bicarbonate type water. Dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 61 to 284 milligrams per liter. Coastal Plain, South Carolina and Georgia, and examines their potential for deep-well waste storage. For mapping purposes a waste-storage \"operational unit\" is established and defined. It is a sand or sandstone layer, 20 feet or more in thickness, that is immediately overlain and underlain by a layer of shale or clay, 20 feet or more in thickness, and which occurs in regional chronostratigraphic units (Units A, B, C, D, E, F, G(?), and H(?)) of Mesozoic age in areas where each of these units contains nonusable ground water. Nonusable ground water is defined as water that contains sodium chloride in excess of 10,000 mg/L.</p><p>Using a group of geohydrologic parameters derived from or combining 21 categories of basic data, established from study and interpretation of well cuttings and geophysical logs, a series of 32 regional maps and 8 stratigraphic cross sections was constructed. The guidelines include requirements for surface slopes of less than 5 percent, 61 m of alluvium beneath the site, an area free of active erosion or deposition, lack of faults, a minimum area of 5 km2, no potential for flooding, and as many logistical support facilities as possible.</p><p>The geology of the Jackass Flats area is similar to the rest of the Nevada Test Site in topographic relief (305-1,200 m), stratigraphy (complexly folded and faulted Paleozoic sediments overlain by Tertiary ash-flow tuffs and lavas overlain in turn by younger alluvium), and structure (Paleozoic thrust faults and folds, strike-slip faults, proximity to volcanic centers, and Basin and Range normal faults). Of the stratigraphic units at the potential Spent Unreprocessed Fuel Facility site in Jackass Flats, only the thickness and stability of the alluvium are of immediate importance. Basin and Range faults and a possible extension of the Mine Mountain fault need further investigation.</p><p>The combination of a slope map and a simplified geologic and physiographic map into one map shows several potential sites for a Spent Unreprocessed Fuel Facility in Jackass Flats. The potential areas have slopes of less than 5 percent and contain only desert pavement or segmented desert pavement--the two physiographic categories having the greatest geomorphic and hydraulic stability.</p><p>Before further work can be done, specific criteria for a Spent Unreprocessed Fuel Facility site must be defined. It consists of four distinctive physiographic regions: 1) part of the northern cratered plains which forms an incomplete annulus around the north polar region, 2) smooth lowland plains of Utopia Planitia across the central and southeastern part of the map, 3) mountainous terrain, in the Nilosyrtis Mensae region south of the lowland plains, consisting of distinct mountains with hummocky surfaces, and 4) cratered plateau in the southwest part of the map, forming the northern part of the large complex cratered region in the mid-latitudes of Mars. This map shows the changes that have occurred in the location of the main channel of the river from 1936 to 1974. The map indicated that certain reaches of the river are subject to different rates of channel migration. Also shown is the boundary of the flood plain, which is mapped at the point of abrupt break in slope. This map documents the position of the river channel prior to any withdrawals of water or alteration of the flow characteristics of the white river that may occur in order to meet water requirements principally associated with the proposed oil-shale industry or other development in the area.</p><p>The channel locations were determined from aerial photographs taken at four different time periods for the following Federal agencies: In 1936, U.S. Soil Conservation Services; 1953, U.S. Corps of Engineers; 1965, U.S. Geological Survey; and in 1974, U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The 1936 delineation, which is actually based upon photographs that were taken in 1936 and 1937, was made by projection of the original photographs on a base map that was prepared from 1:24,000 scale topographic maps. The 1953, 1965, and 1974 delineations were produced from stereographic models. The 1965 delineation was compiled from photographs that were taken during 1962-65. These formations strike east to west and crop out over the north coast of the island. Structurally, the rocks form a simple wedge abutting southward against a mountain chain of volcanic origin and thickening northward to about 1,400 meters by the seashore. All stages of karstification are present: from the incipient, found at the western end of the belt to the residual, found at the eastern end. Maximum development of sinkholes occurs on the Aguada Limestone and upper part of the Aymanom Limestone. These formations have a CaCO<sub>3</sub> content range from about 85 to 95 percent. The model is quasi three-dimensional in that it simulates ground-water flow in a multiaquifer system by assuming horizontal flow in the aquifers and vertical flow through the confining layers separating the aquifers. The model uses the iterative alternating-direction implicit procedure to solve the finite-difference flow equations. The digital model is documented by a program listing and flow charts. Data used in the model and sample output are presented to document the simulation of steady-state flow in the aquifer system.
