This Jurassic intrusion displays large and systematic chemical and mineralogical zonation over a horizontal distance of 5 km. Major-element variations compare closely with Dalyls average andesite-dacite-rhyolite over an SiO2 range of 63 to 76 percent. \r\n\r\nFor various reasons it was originally thought that assimilation played a dominant role in development of the Snake Creek-Williams Canyon pluton. However, based on modeling of more recently obtained trace element and isotopic data, we have concluded that the zonation is the result of in-situ fractional crystallization, with little assimilation at the level of crystallization. \r\n\r\nThis report summarizes data available for each of the mineral species present in the zoned intrusion. Special attention has been paid to trends We present oxygen and strontium isotopic data for olivine tholeiites, evolved (that is, differentiated and (or) contaminated) lavas, rhyolites, and crustal- derived xenoliths from the Snake River Plain. These data show that the olivine tholeiites are fairly uniform in d80 (5.1 to 6.2) and 87Sr/86Sr (0.7056 to 0.7076) and reveal no correlation between these ratios. The tholeiites are considered representative of mantle-derived magmas that have not interacted significantly with crustal material or meteoric water. The evolved lavas display a wider range in d 80 (5.6 to 7.6) and 87Sr/86Sr (0.708 to 0.717) with positive correlations between these ratios in some suites but not in others. Crustal xenoliths have high and variable 8?Sr/86Sr (0.715 to 0.830) and d80 values that vary widely (6.7 to 9.2) and are a few permil greater than d80 values of the Snake River basalts. Thus, isotopic data for the evolved lavas are permissive of small degrees of contamination by crustal rocks similar to the most d80-depleted xenoliths. The d80 enrichments in some evolved lavas also are consistent with crystal fractionation processes and do not necessarily require bulk interaction with crustal rocks. Enrichment in d80 but not in 87Sr/86Sr in one suite of evolved lavas suggests that crustal contamination may not be essential to the petrogenesis of those lavas. Other suites of evolved lavas display large variations in 87Sr/86Sr that reflect at least some selective contamination with 87St. \r\n\r\nBulk solid/liquid oxygen-isotope fractionation factors (a's) calculated for the evolved lavas from Craters of the Moon National Monument are comparatively large. These a's are dependent upon the nature and proportions of phases removed by crystal fractionation; basaltic lava a's differ from latitic lava a?s in accordance with different phenocryst assemblages in these rocks. \r\n\r\nSnake River Plain rhyolites are isotopically distinct from both the analyzed crustal xenoliths and olivine tholeiites. Their origin remains poorly understood, but crustal or sub-crustal sources may be viable. In the first case, they must be derived by anatexis of material distinct from the analyzed crustal xenoliths. In the second case, they must be derived from material unlike the source for tholeiites. No cogenetic relation with the tholeiites seems likely on the basis of available data. that might relate to the variation in the chemical petrology of the pluton.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83338","usgsCitation":"Leeman, W.P., and Whelan, J.F., 1983, Oxygen and strontium isotopic studies of basaltic lavas from the Snake River plain, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-338, 35 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83338.","productDescription":"35 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143338,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0338/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37775,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0338/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db68a0dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leeman, William P.","contributorId":87142,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leeman","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160600,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Whelan, Joseph F.","contributorId":29792,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whelan","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160599,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The flow-duration sediment-rating curve method, reservoir survey data, and Pacific southwest Inter-Agency Committee (PSIAC) formula were used. Daily suspended-sediment samples were collected at USGS gaging stations on the Ylig and Ugum Rivers for one year. Intermittent samples were collected from the Talofofo River for six months. Although limited, these data are used in the flow-duration sediment-rating-curve method to estimate mean suspended-sediment yields. Fena Reservoir sedimentation data are used to test the applicability of the PSIAC formula in the three basins. Estimates of suspended-sediment yields are 467 to 845, 678 to 977, and 634 to 855 tons per year per square mile for the Talofofo, Ylig, and Ugum basins, respectively. PSIAC estimates of total sediment yield are 1,200 tons/yr/mi2 for the Talofofo, 1,385 tons/yr/mi2 for the Ylig, and 1,210 tons/yr/mi2 for the Ugum basins. These values are comparable to estimates of sediment yields from several similar basins on Oahu, Hawaii. It appears that the PSIAC method can be a useful tool in estimating sediment yields in some tropical areas. The central part of the province is occupied by the Tatar arch, which contains the major share of the oil fields of the province. The Perm-Bashkir arch forms the northeastern part of the regional high, and the Zhigulevsko-Orenburg arch makes up the southern part. These arches are separated from one another by elongate downwarps. \r\n\r\nThe platform cover overlies an Archean crystalline basement and consists of seven main sedimentation cycles as follows: 1) Riphean (lower Bavly) continental sandstone, shale, and conglomerate beds from 500 to 5,000 m thick deposited in aulacogens. 2) Vendian (upper Bavly) continental and marine shale and sandstone up to 3,000 m thick. 3) Middle Devonian-Tournaisian transgressive deposits, which are sandstone, siltstone, and shale in the lower part and carbonates with abundant reefs in the upper; thickness is 300-1,000 m. In the upper carbonate part is the Kamsko-Kinel trough system, which consists of narrow interconnected deep-water troughs. 4) The Visean-Namurian-Bashkirian cycle, which began with deposition of Visean clastics that draped over reefs of the previous cycle and filled in an erosional relief that had formed in some places on the sediments of the previous cycle. The Visean clastics are overlain by marine carbonates. Thickness of the cycle is 50-800 m. 5) Early Moscovian-Early Permian terrigenous clastic deposits and marine carbonate beds 1,000-3,000 m thick. 6) The late Early Permian-Late Permian cycle, which reflects maximum growth of the Ural Mountains and associated Ural foredeep. Evaporites were first deposited, then marine limestones and dolomites, which intertongue eastward with clastic sediments from the Ural Mountains. 7) Continental redbeds of Triassic age and mixed continental and marine elastic beds of Jurassic and Cretaceous age, which were deposited on the southern, southwestern, and northern margins of the Russian platform; they are generally absent in the Volga-Ural province, however. \r\n\r\nThe Volga-Ural oil and gas basin is a single artesian system that contains seven aquifers separated by seals. The areas of greatest hydraulic head are in the eastern parts of the basin near areas where the aquifers crop out on the western slopes of the Ural Mountains. The Peri-Caspian basin is the principal drainage area of the artesian system. \r\n\r\nApproximately 600 oil and gas fields and 2,000 pools have been found in the Volga-Ural province. Nine productive sequences are recognized as follows: 1) Upper Proterozoic (Bavly beds), which are promising but not yet commercial. 2) Clastic Devonian, which contains the major reserves and includes the main pays of the super-giant Romashkino field. 3) Carbonate Upper Devonian and lowermost Carboniferous, which is one of the main reef-bearing intervals. 4) Visean (Lower Carboniferous) elastics, which are the main pays in the super-giant Arian field. 5) Carbonate Lower and Middle Carboniferous. 6) Clastic Middle Carboniferous Moscovian. 7) Carbonate Middle and Upper Carboniferous. 8) Carbonate-evaporite Lower Permian, which contains the major gas reserves and the lower part of the Melekess tar deposits. 9) Clastic-carbonate Upper Permian, which contains the major part of the Melekess tar deposits.\r\n\r\nThe Volga-Ural province is divided into several productive regions on a basis of differences in structure, distribution of reservoir and source-rock facies, and general composition of the petroleum accumulations. These regions are the Tatar arch, Birsk saddle, Upper Kama depression, Perm-Bashkir arch, Ufa-Orenburg monocline, Melekess-Sernovodsko-Abdulino basin, Zhligulevsko-Orenburg arch, Ural foredeep, and north borders of the Peri-Casplan depression. \r\n\r\nExploration activity has declined in recent years; however, interest remains high in several parts of the province, particula","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83711","usgsCitation":"Peterson, J.A., and Clarke, J.W., 1983, Geology of the Volga-Ural petroleum province and detailed description of the Ramashkino and Arlan oil fields: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-711, vii, 175 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83711.","productDescription":"vii, 175 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143606,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0711/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38498,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0711/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c9b7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peterson, James A.","contributorId":106872,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterson","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161780,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Clarke, James W.","contributorId":35297,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clarke","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161779,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In a few places the anomalies are caused by intrusions. Correlation between magnetic properties measured from rock samples and those derived from rock unit-magnetic anomaly associations is excellent. Anomaly characteristics, extensive magnetic gradients, and marked changes in the regional magnetic field can be coupled with the magnetic properties of the rock units to delineate structural boundaries. Three major boundaries are indicated by contrasts in regional magnetic expressions. Less extensive but more clearly indicated boundaries in the immediate vicinity of Yucca Mountain are interpreted from a distinctive pairing of northerly-trending linear positive and negative anomalies which are caused by vertical displacement in generally gently dipping volcanic beds. The displacement between beds is located approximately along the border line between the linear anomaly pairs. One series of pairs of more northeasterly trend lies over the general location of a change from moderately thick to very thick volcanic units that was interpreted from gravity data. Several low amplitude but distinctively shaped anomalies in areas underlain primarily by sedimentary strata indicate the presence of intrusions and faults.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83616","usgsCitation":"Kane, M.F., and Bracken, R.E., 1983, Aeromagnetic map of Yucca Mountain and surrounding regions, southwest Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-616, i, 19 p. :maps ;28 cm.; 1 over-size sheet; scale 1:48000 (1 inch = 4000 feet), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83616.","productDescription":"i, 19 p. :maps ;28 cm.; 1 over-size sheet; scale 1:48000 (1 inch = 4000 feet)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":110628,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75697.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"75697"},{"id":143105,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0616/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37479,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0616/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37480,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0616/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"48000","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aeee4b07f02db6911ca","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kane, Martin Francis","contributorId":87923,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kane","given":"Martin","email":"","middleInitial":"Francis","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160213,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bracken, Robert E. 0000-0001-7759-2743 rbracken@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7759-2743","contributorId":2640,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bracken","given":"Robert","email":"rbracken@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":160212,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The U.S. Geological Survey has been collecting water-resource information for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management since the program was started. This report summarizes the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's hydrologic information needs in the different stages of the land-use planning and coal-leasing process and presents an evaluation of the use of the U.S. Geological Survey's precipitation-runoff model from a Bureau of Land Management perspective. Information collected by the U.S. Geological Survey for precipitation, surface water, ground water, and water quality has been used extensively in environmental assessments and site-specific analyses for coal leasing. \r\n\r\nThe U.S. Geological Survey also has been calibrating a precipitation-runoff model used to estimate the surface discharge of ungaged basins in northwestern Colorado. A test of the model shows that it will provide surface-discharge estimates for ungaged basins within the accuracy required for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's land-use planning and coal-leasing process. However, the model is most effective when applied by an experienced user. In addition, more verification of the model is needed before it will accurately predict the impacts of coal mining on surface water.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821012","usgsCitation":"Herbert, R.A., 1983, An assessment of the hydrologic information required for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management-U.S. Geological Survey coal-hydrology program in the West: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1012, iv, 32 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821012.","productDescription":"iv, 32 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142205,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1012/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37155,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1012/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adae4b07f02db685721","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Herbert, Richard A.","contributorId":6451,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Herbert","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159700,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A total of 35.6 million cubic yards of mudflow material was deposited in the lower Cowlitz (downstream from the Union Pacific Railroad bridge) and Columbia Rivers. </p><p>The arrival of this material at the Columbia River, during a period of the daily tidal cycle, when the flow was at a minimum or quite probably reversed and flowing upstream resulted in its deposition in an area 7 miles upstream and 2 miles downstream from the junction of the Cowlitz and Columbia Rivers. The thickness of the deposit was at a maximum near Coffin Rock, where a hole 140 feet deep was filled with 90 feet of sediment. Incomplete filling, compaction, and (or) erosion caused a 1Q-foot depression to form in the surface of the newly deposited material at this location. </p><p>On May 23, 1980, the presence of two scour channels on each side of a tonguelike deposit (delta) of very fine sand and silt indicates that the coarse-grained sediment and water surge on the morning of May 19 initially scoured the lower 0.5 mile of the Cowlitz River bed. A minimum of 0.4 million cubic yard of material was scoured from the Cowlitz River bed and subsequently redeposited in the Columbia River before the 1.3-million-cubic-yard delta was formed.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir850K","usgsCitation":"Haeni, F., 1983, Sediment deposition in the Columbia and lower Cowlitz rivers, Washington-Oregon, caused by the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 850, v, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir850K.","productDescription":"v, 21 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":30913,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0850k/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123810,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0850k/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":407869,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_23831.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon, Washington","otherGeospatial":"Columbia River, Cowlitz River, Mount St. Helens","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.02490234375,\n              46.038922598236\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.04711914062499,\n              46.038922598236\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.04711914062499,\n              46.475699386607516\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.02490234375,\n              46.475699386607516\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.02490234375,\n              46.038922598236\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a26e4b07f02db60f5a6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Haeni, F.P.","contributorId":87105,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haeni","given":"F.P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147705,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Perhaps the most fundamental distinction between the digital representation of cartographic data and the conventional printed graphic is the need to explicitly and unambiguously code the attributes and spatial relationships among the various data elements. It is also necessary to follow acceptable practices for automated data processing. These requirements have led to the development by the USGS National Mapping Division of several documents that establish in-house digital cartographic standards. \r\n\r\nIn an effort to fulfill lead agency requirements for promulgation of Federal standards in the earth sciences, the documents have been assembled with explanatory text into a USGS Circular. This Circular describes some of the pertinent issues relative to digital cartographic data standards, documents the digital cartographic data standards currently in use within the USGS, and details the efforts of the USGS related to the definition of national digital cartographic data standards. It consists of several chapters; the first is a general overview, and each succeeding chapter is made up from documents that establish in-house standards for one of the various types of digital cartographic data currently produced.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir895A","usgsCitation":"McEwen, R.B., and Calkins, H.W., 1983, Overview and USGS activities: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 895, v, 20 p. ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir895A.","productDescription":"v, 20 p. ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":117472,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0895a/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30556,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1983/0895a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c739","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Ramey, Benjamin S.","contributorId":8083,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ramey","given":"Benjamin","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":749344,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"McEwen, Robert B.","contributorId":24335,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McEwen","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147123,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Calkins, Hugh W.","contributorId":28228,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Calkins","given":"Hugh","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147124,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
