As this study progressed, it became apparent that further analysis would be a duplication of effort as the United States Flood Insurance Administration was requiring similar information. Therefore, it was decided to publish the cross-section data that had been obtained and not to go into further analysis with this study.</p><p>These cross section data can be used in Flood Insurance Administration studies and in other studies related to the planning, development, and management of flood plains. The data were collected by the Caribbean District of the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources. Correlation of crater densities and radiometric ages of Apollo landing sites provide estimates of the absolute age for the units. Results indicate that the far eastern maria were emplaced over a period of approximately 1.25 b.y., from about 3.75 b.y. to 2.5 b.y. before present. Extensive young mare units (~ 2.5 <span>±</span> 0.5 b.y.) occur in all three large far eastern maria. Major old units (~ 3.65 <span>±</span> 0.05 b.y.) occur in central Mare Crisium and eastern Mare Marginis. Correlation of the age data and remote sensing data suggests that: (1) both young and old units have relatively high Mg/A1 ratios and are relatively rich in Fe and Ti, whereas intermediate age units have lower Mg/Al ratios and less Fe and Ti. A similar relationship previously noted for other maria suggests that this applied throughout the lunar maria; (2) older units generally have higher remnant magnetism than younger units - a relationship also previously noted for other lunar maria and attributed to a steady decline of a primodial lunar magnetic field, and (3) all age units in the eastern maria have relatively low natural radioactivity or abundances of Th, K, and U compared to the western maria (particularly in the Mare Imbrium area). The presence of young lava flows in both the eastern and western maria suggests that the relative abundance of these radioactive elements has played only a minor role in controlling the duration and location of mare volcanism.</p><p>The crater-density relative age data presented here correlate in a linear fashion with crater-morphology relative age data. A combination of these data provides a nearly complete map of the distribution of units of uniform relative age of the lunar maria and shows that, as previously suggested, the older units (&gt; 3.5 b.y. old) are generally located along the basin edges and the younger units (&lt; 3.5 b.y. old) are generally in the basin centers. However, this map also shows that the vents for the flows of the young units must be located on the edges of the basins. The work consisted of geologic, geochemical, and geophysical investigations and diamond drilling in the subsurface. Thirteen holes were drilled, aggregating a length of 2,397 m. Drilling at three of the deposits, Gehab, Sha'ab El Tare, and Rabathan, indicated mineralized reserves aggregating 6,341,000 tons, the average grade of which is 0.95 percent copper.</p><p>The deposits are strata-bound in volcaniclastic rocks of the Baish Group and in quartz porphyry, all of which are Precambrian in age. Unlike earthquakes in the Maacama-Rodgers Creek fault zone to the south and west, earthquakes at The Geysers are confined to depths of less than 5 km. The present level of seismicity at The Geysers appears to be higher than the preproduction level and is higher and more continuous than the seismicity in the surrounding region. Earthquakes in the steam production zone at The Geysers resemble earthquakes in the surrounding region with regard to focal plane solutions, source characteristics and magnitude distribution (b slope). The system can be deployed for periods of 2-6 months to monitor intermittent processes of sediment movement such as storms, and to assess seasonal variability. One mission of the Geological Survey is to provide the hydrologic information and understanding needed for the optimum utilization and management of the Nation's water resources for the overall Unfortunately, final catalogs of earthquakes such as Hileman and others (1973), Hill and others (1975a), and Friedman and others (1976) lag in publication as long as two years beyond the end of the recording periods which they cover, owing to the time-consuming process of re-reading seismograms to improve earthquake locations. It is, thus, the intent of this report to make public a preliminary version of the catalog(s) that will cover the period October 1976 -September 1977. This catalog is similar to that of Fuis and others (1977) which covers a prior period of time from June 1974 -September 1976.</p><p>The three most serious problems with this catalog are 1) incomplete reporting of earthquake magnitudes, 2) use of more than one crustal model for locating earthquakes in a given area, and 3) inclusion of blasts.
