The data were evaluated to assess the quantity and quality of water resources available in the area for use in hydraulic coal mining. Based on discharge records, surface-water supplies of most streams should be adequate to meet the demands for hydraulic mining of 1 million tons of coal per year with a recycled water system. However, on some of the smaller streams in the area, some storage of water may be required for use during low-flow periods to meet minimum-flow requirements for downstream reaches. Other potential sources of water include Rifle Gap Reservoir, Harvey Gap Reservoir, and ground water from valley-fill deposits along major streams and rivers. The surface water and ground water should be of adequate quality for use in hydraulic mining, with the possible exceptions of suspended-sediment concentrations that periodically may be as much as 18,800 milligrams per liter in streams in the Rifle Creek drainage, and dissolved-solids concentrations greater than 20,000 milligrams per liter in some aquifers. Data are insufficient to assess the potential impact of hydraulic coal mining on downstream water quality. The technique has been applied to the San Francisco Bay area. Ground shaking, ground failures of various kinds, surface faulting, tsunamis, and earthquake induced fires are all responsible for earthquake building losses. Only losses associated with ground shaking are considered in this report for a number of reasons. Losses associated with various types of ground failure such as landsliding and liquefaction are difficult to estimate because the conditions necessary for these effects to occur are not completely understood and/or may be difficult to identify. Losses related to surface faulting are believed to be small as a proportion of total losses (Algermissen and others, 1972), and losses related to tsunamis have been quite rare along the central California coast. Well-established methods are available for estimating fire losses, but these losses are beyond the scope of this report.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78440","usgsCitation":"Algermissen, S.T., McGrath, M., and Hanson, S., 1978, Development of a technique for the rapid estimation of earthquake losses: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-440, 98 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78440.","productDescription":"98 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140162,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0440/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":413065,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0440/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco Bay area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.75024414062499,\n              37.448696585910376\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.124267578125,\n              37.448696585910376\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.124267578125,\n              38.25543637637947\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.75024414062499,\n              38.25543637637947\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.75024414062499,\n              37.448696585910376\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65e0e3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Algermissen, Sylvester Theodore","contributorId":94300,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Algermissen","given":"Sylvester","email":"","middleInitial":"Theodore","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156453,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McGrath, M.B.","contributorId":99545,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McGrath","given":"M.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156454,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hanson, S.L.","contributorId":47361,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hanson","given":"S.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156452,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

To obtain samples from these small-diameter wells in order to monitor water quality, and to calibrate solute-transport models, a small-diameter pump with unique operating characteristics is required that causes a minimum alternation of samples during field sampling. A small-diameter gas-driven pump was designed and built to obtain water samples from wells of two-inch diameter or larger. The pump is a double-piston type with the following characteristics: (1) The water sample is isolated from the operating gas, (2) no source of electricity is ncessary, (3) operation is continuous, (4) use of compressed gas is efficient, and (5) operation is reliable over extended periods of time. The model is quasi three-dimensional in that it simulates ground-water flow in a multiaquifer system by assuming horizontal flow in the aquifers and vertical flow through the confining layers separating the aquifers. The model uses the iterative alternating-direction implicit procedure to solve the finite-difference flow equations. The digital model is documented by a program listing and flow charts. Data used in the model and sample output are presented to document the simulation of steady-state flow in the aquifer system. These shales are composed predominately of 2M illite and illitic mixed-layer clay with minor amounts of chlorite and kaolinite. Preliminary data indicate that kaolinite, the only allogenic clay mineral, is present in successively older beds of the Ohio Shale from south to north in the southern and middle parts of the Appalachian basin. This trend in the distribution of kaolinite shows a paleocurrent direction to the southwest. Three well-known methods of preparing the clay fraction for X-ray diffraction analysis were tested and evaluated. Kaolinite was not identified in two of the methods because of layering due to differing settling rates of the clay minerals. It is suggested that if one of the two settling methods of sample preparation is used, the clay film be thin enough for the X-ray beam to penetrate the entire thickness of clay.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr781084","usgsCitation":"Hosterman, J.W., and Loferski, P.J., 1978, Preliminary report on the clay mineralogy of the Upper Devonian Shales in the southern and middle Appalachian Basin: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-1084, 27 p. :map ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr781084.","productDescription":"27 p. :map ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151337,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1084/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48931,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1084/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48932,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1084/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48933,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1084/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48934,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1084/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66c9f5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hosterman, John W.","contributorId":48962,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hosterman","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":180948,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Loferski, Patricia J. ploferski@usgs.gov","contributorId":4096,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Loferski","given":"Patricia","email":"ploferski@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":180947,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The terms a and b are functions of temperature only. Where the total pressure and temperature are known, the concentration of methane, x(CH4), is found by iteration. The concentration of methane in a sodium chloride brine, y(CH4), is estimated using the function log y(CH4) = log x(CH4) - A I, where A is the salting out constant and I is the ionic strength. The unconfined aquifer beneath dunes on the barrier islands is estimated to yield as much as 30 gallons per minute of freshwater to a horizontal well, but this aquifer is subject to periodic overwash by the ocean, thus temporarily contaminating the aquifer with saltwater. The upper confined aquifer is about 90 to 150 feet deep, but is known to contain freshwater only in the Drum Inlet area. The potential yield of this aquifer where it is fresh is unknown because of the possibility of saltwater encroachment. The lower limestone aquifer (150 to 550 feet deep) contains freshwater southeast of Drum Inlet; potential yields is estimated to be as great as 500 gallons per minute per well.
