In a relatively short time, many of the new research projects have developed critical information on uranium habitats and improved methods of exploration. In FY 1979 a budget increase of approximately 20 percent is programmed, for a funding base of $6,600,000. The increase is scheduled for research grants and contracts outside the USGS in order to extend the basic program without additional personnel. These shales are composed predominately of 2M illite and illitic mixed-layer clay with minor amounts of chlorite and kaolinite. Preliminary data indicate that kaolinite, the only allogenic clay mineral, is present in successively older beds of the Ohio Shale from south to north in the southern and middle parts of the Appalachian basin. This trend in the distribution of kaolinite shows a paleocurrent direction to the southwest. Three well-known methods of preparing the clay fraction for X-ray diffraction analysis were tested and evaluated. Kaolinite was not identified in two of the methods because of layering due to differing settling rates of the clay minerals. (In addition, there were 131 cases where there was an overlap of acreage between a lease offered and receiving bids in 2 sales.)</p><p>Table 1 summarizes these exact re-bid leases which are in 2 categories: (1) Leases re-bid after rejection of any and all bids received as a result of a prior offering, and (2) Leases re-bid after prior offering, issue, and relinquishment of a lease. We will call the former category rejected re-bid leases, the latter relinquished re-bid leases. Table 1 shows there were 120 of the former and 58 of the latter.</p><p>The purpose of this study was simply development and analysis of the statistics of re-bid leases. The reasons why the data behave as they do are subjective and unavoidably involve nontechnical value judgments. Therefore, we do not speculate on the reasons in this report. Measured vertical changes as great as 3.5 cm per year indicate that two types of tectonic movement are occurring: (1) a downward regional tilt of the valley surface from the Mexican border northward toward Salton Sea, and (2) a deepening of the structural trough presently occupied by Salton Sea. A comparison of 1972-77 change contours with 1927 topographic contours shows gross parallelism, suggesting that the recent deformation is a continuation of the tectonism that formed the Salton trough. Ground movement since 1972 has tended to steepen slightly the gradients of streams, canals, and drains on the valley floor and to increase the capacity of Salton Sea. Evidence exists that some of these shallow basins have been much hotter in the past either from igneous activity or from a higher geothermal gradient. Uplift and erosion may also have removed substantial thicknesses of sediments in some of these basins. Oil on the stable shallow shelves of deep basins may have originated in the deeper part of the basin and undergone long lateral migration to the traps where it is now found. Ground-water levels ranged from 0.4 foot above to 0.5 foot below average. The highest and lowest ground water for the year were both 1 foot below their long-term averages. In the Hialeah-Miami Springs area, water levels in wells near the centers of the heaviest pumping ranged from 8.0 to 9.5 feet below msl (mean sea level, 1929); and in the southwest well-field area, ground-water levels near the centers of pumping ranged from 2.0 feet above to 3.0 feet below msl. The combined average daily discharge from nine major streams and canals that flow eastward into tidal waters was 1,666 cubic feet per second (cfs), 609 cfs above the combined average daily flow for the 1975 water year. The combined average daily flow through the Tamiami Canal outlets was 783 cfs, 215 cfs above that of the 1975 water year. The 1976 position of the salt fron in the coastal part of the Biscayne aquifer was about the same as in 1975 except in the vicinity of Mowry Canal south of Homestead Air Force Base where the salt front had encroached farther inland. Lineaments and alignments","docAbstract":"The first stages of a remote-sensing project on the Paradox basin, part of the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) radioactive waste-emplacement program, consisted of a review and selection of the best available satellite scanner images to use in geomorphologic and tectonic investigations of the region. High-quality Landsat images in several spectral bands (E-2260-17124 and E-5165-17030), taken under low sun angle October 9 and 10, 1975, were processed via computer for planimetric rectification, histogram analysis, linear transformation of radiance values, and edge enhancement. A lineament map of the northern Paradox basin was subsequently compiled at 1:400,000 using the enhanced Landsat base. Numerous previously unmapped northeast-trending lineaments between the Green River and Yellowcat dome; confirmatory detail on the structural control of major segments of the Colorado, Gunnison, and Dolores Rivers; and new evidence for late Phanerozoic reactivation of Precambrian basement structures are among the new contributions to the tectonics of the region. Lineament trends appear to be compatible with the postulated Colorado lineament zone, with geophysical potential-field anomalies, and with a northeast-trending basement fault pattern. Combined Landsat, geologic, and geophysical field evidence for this interpretation includes the sinuousity of the composite Salt Valley anticline, the transection of the Moab-Spanish Valley anticline on its southeastern end by northeast-striking faults, and possible transection (?) of the Moab diapir. Similarly, northeast-trending lineaments in Cottonwood Canyon and elsewhere are interpreted as manifestations of structures associated with northeasterly trends in the magnetic and gravity fields of the La Sal Mountains region. Other long northwesterly lineaments near the western termination of the Ryan Creek fault zone. may be associated with the fault zone separating the Uncompahgre horst uplift from the Paradox basin. \r\n\r\nImplications of the present investigation for a potential radioactive waste-emplacement site in Salt Valley include confirmation of lack of permanent surface drainage and absence of agricultural or other development in the area of northern Salt Valley. On the other hand, the existence of diapirism, salt-karst landforms, and extensive lineamentation of the northern Paradox basin suggest regional tectonic instability at least in the geologic past. Future reactivation of diapiric or other halokinetic processes, including lateral flow, would lead to plastic behavior of the halite that might cause emplaced waste containers to migrate within the diapir. At Salt Valley, existing diapiric boundary faults and intersecting joint sets in sandstone units on the anticlinal flanks could, if the hydraulic gradient is suitable, provide conduits to the halite core for circulating ground water from adjacent Mesozoic sandstones in synclinal areas between the salt diapirs. Moreover, the loci of major lineament intersections might be areas of somewhat elevated seismic risk. These data, consisting of records for 157 wells and 47 springs and chemical analyses of water for 135 of the wells and all 47 springs, are presented in tabular form. The tables contain data that were collected during the investigation , data compiled from reports published by the Colorado Water Conservation Board, and unpublished data from the files of the U.S. Geological Survey. State and local officials in the Colorado Springs--Castle Rock area may find these data useful in planning for residential, commercials, and industrial development. In addition, three local surveys were made that helped to fill in gaps in the gravity coverage. The resulting complete Bouguer gravity anomaly map and first- and third-order polynomial maps exhibit anomalies of great lateral extent and amplitudes that exceed 45 mGals. \r\n\r\nFive generalized geologic cross sections were constructed and analyzed by the two-dimensional method to investigate the thickness of the valley fill in Tularosa Valley and Jornada Del Muerto. Two granitic facies were found: a coarse-grained variety in the southern part of the body and near the edges of the pluton and a medium-grained porphyritic variety in the central and northern sections. Point-load strength tests indicate that the medium-grained porphyritic granite is stronger than the coarse-grained porphyritic or non-porphyritic granite. Results of bulk and grain density tests suggest that rock strength in the weaker granite samples is controlled by microfractures.</p><p>In the pluton, joint trends changed from a scattered pattern in the north to a preferred orientation in the south. Because it has a simple joint pattern and is homogeneous in texture, the southern part of the Lucerne Granite is a more suitable area for excavation and fluid storage than the northern The NX (7.6-cm (3in.)) bore hole is located in the NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of sec. 35, T. 51 N., R. 82 W., Johnson County, Wyo. (See index map in fig. 1.) The first 5.3 m (17.4 ft) was sampled by Shelby tube, the remainder by wire-line coring apparatus using a split inner tube. Bentonite-based drilling mud was used to drill that part of the hole below 30 m (98 ft).
