Some irrigation water used in this area obtained from surface sources, but a significant amount is obtained from wells. The principal aquifer in the area is the Columbia River Basalt Group. Wells in the basalt are commonly drilled to depths of 500 to 1,200 ft and many produce more than 1,000 gal/min. A cooperative ground-water modeling study by the U.S. Geological Survey and Oregon Water Resources Department has resulted in the compilation of data from drillers logs and well inspections for wells completed in the basalt aquifer. Water-level measurements have been made in some wells in the area since the 1950's. The wells with longest periods of record are those that are part of a Statewide network of observation wells measured by the U. S. Geological Survey and Oregon Water Resources Department. This report includes a table of well information, representative hydrographs, and well location maps. Helium concentrations in 510 samples ranged from -147 to 441 ppb He with respect to ambient air. The median helium value for the study area was 36 ppb. Concentrations of more than 100 ppb He, and less than -20 ppb He, occur more commonly in the Ely Quadrangle and are especially numerous in the western one-half of this quadrangle. Other Cretaceous mollusks have been found in the glacial deposits in Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. \r\n\r\nThe oldest well dated marine mollusks are of earliest late Cenomanian age and occur in northwestern Iowa. Mollusks of marginal marine \r\nand nonmarine environments in northwestern Iowa and south-central Minnesota are probably of slightly younger late Cenomanian age. The youngest mollusks treated in this report are bivalves of Santonian age found in the Niobrara Formation in eastern North and South Dakota. \r\n\r\nThe collections indicate the presence or former presence of the following ammonite zones in the northeastern part of the Western Interior seaway: \r\n\r\nSantonian: Scaphites depressus-Clioscaphites choteauensis \r\n\r\nConiacian: Scaphites uentrocosus; Scaphites preuentricosus \r\n\r\nTuronian: Scaphites coruensis; Scaphites whitfieldi; Prionocyclus hyatti; Subprionocyclus percarinatus; Collignoniceras woollgari; Watinoceras coloradoense \r\n\r\nCenomanian: Dunueganoceras albertense; Dunueganoceras pondi\r\n\r\nPART B: Sedimentary rocks of early Late Cretaceous age occur in the eastern parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska, and in Minnesota and western Iowa. They are generally included in, from oldest to youngest, the Dakota Formation, Graneros Shale, Greenhorn Formation, Carlile Shale, and Niobrara Formation. However, in eastern North Dakota, they are also assigned to, in ascending order, the Belle Fourche Shale, Greenhorn Formation, Carlile Shale, and Niobrara Formation. The Graneros Shale and laterally equivalent strata in the Belle Fourche Shale grade eastward into the Coleraine Formation of northeastern Minnesota and probably into the Windrow Formation of southeastern Minnesota. Cretaceous beds locally overlie rocks of Precambrian, Paleozoic, and Jurassic ages, and they are generally overlain by glacial drift and alluvium of Quaternary age. In Minnesota and adjoining areas, formations of mid-Cretaceous age commonly overlap the dissected surface of Precambrian rocks. The thickness of the lower Upper Cretaceous sequence ranges from about 223 m in eastern North Dakota and about 200 m in northeastern Nebraska to a featheredge in Minnesota and Iowa. \r\n\r\nThese lower Upper Cretaceous formations are composed mainly of shale, siltstone, sandstone, and limestone units of marine and nonmarine origin and were deposited near the eastern shore of a transgressing and regressing epicontinental sea in Cenomanian Turonian Coniacian. and Santonian time. During the late Cenoanian, the strandline was in Minnesota and was oriented generally northnortheast. Interpretations of the depositional environments of the strata and of fossils from outcrops and from clasts in glacial drift indicate that the Cretaceous seaway extended from this region northeastward across Canada to Greenland in the Turonian Coniacian, and Santonian. \r\n\r\nThe Cretaceous formations are deformed into broad, shallow synclines in eastern North and South Dakota and in northeastern Nebraska. A west-trending anticline, the Sioux uplift, separates the synclines in southeastern South Dakota. Sparse evidence of minor faulting in the formations exists in northeastern South Dakota, along the strike of a major southwest-trending zone of tectonism in the Precambrian basement rocks. The well is one of a series of test wells drilled in and near Yucca Mountain adjacent to the Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy. These investigations are part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations to identify suitable sites for underground storage of high-level radioactive wastes. Test well USW H-6 was drilled to a total depth of 1,220 m. Rocks penetrated are predominantly ash-flow tuffs. Lava was encountered from 877 to 1 ,126 m. The composite static water level is approximately 526 m below land surface. The well was pumped during two periods. Maximum drawdown was about 18 m after pumping for 4,822 min at 28 L/sec, and 12 m after pumping for 2,226 min at 27 L/sec. A borehole flow survey showed that 91% of the water withdrawn from the well came from the depth intervals from 616 to 631 m, and from 777 to 788 m. Bedrock in the area is shale, siltstone, sandstone, and the McAlester (Stigler) and Hartshorne coals of the McAlester Formation and Hartshorne Sandstone of Pennsylvanian age. The two coal beds, upper and lower Hartshorne, associated with the Hartshorne Sandstone converge or are separated by a few feet or less of bony coal or shale in the McCurtain area. Many small faults cut the Hartshorne coal in all the McCurtain-area mines. The main avenues of water entry to and movement through the bedrock are the exposed bedding-plane openings between layers of sandstone, partings between laminae of shale, fractures and joints developed during folding and faulting laminae of shale, fractures and joints developed during folding and faulting of the brittle rocks, and openings caused by surface mining--the overburden being shattered and broken to form spoil. Water-table conditions exist in bedrock and spoil in the area. Mine pond water is in direct hydraulic connections with water in the spoil piles and the underlying Hartshorne Sandstone.\r\nSulfate is the best indicator of the presence of coal-mine drainage in both surface and ground water in the Oklahoma coal field. Median sulfate concentrations for four sites on Mule Creek ranged from 26 to 260 milligrams per liter. Median sulfate concentrations increased with increased drainage from unreclaimed mined areas. The median sulfate concentration in Mule Creek where it drains the reclaimed area is less than one-third of that at the next site downstream where the stream begins to drain abandoned (unreclaimed) mine lands.\r\n\r\nWater from Mule Creek predominantly is a sodium sulfate type. Maximum and median values for specific conductance and concentrations of calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulfate, chloride, dissolved solids, and alkalinity increase as Mule Creek flows downstream and drains increasing areas of abandoned (unreclaimed) mining lands. Constituent concentrations in Mule Creek, except those for dissolved solids, iron, manganese, and sulfate, generally do not exceed drinking-water limits. Reclamation likely would result in decreased concentrations of dissolved solids, calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulfate, and alkalinity in Mule Creek in the vicinity of the reclaimed area.\r\n\r\nGround water in the area is moderately hard to very hard alkaline water with a median pH of 7.2 to 7.6. It predominately is a sodium sulfate type and, except for dissolved solids, iron manganese, and sulfate, constituent concentrations generally do not exceed drinking-water limits. Ground-water quality would likely be unchanged by reclamation.\r\n\r\nThe quality of water in the two mine ponds is quite similar to that of the shallow ground water in the area. Constituents in water from both ponds generally do not exceed drinking-water limits and the water quality is unlikely to be changed by reclamation in the area.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wri834202","usgsCitation":"Slack, L.J., 1983, Hydrology of an abandoned coal-mining area near McCurtain, Haskell County, Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4202, v, 117 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834202.","productDescription":"v, 117 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124782,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4202/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58548,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4202/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58549,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4202/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dee4b07f02db5e2ef3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Slack, L. It comprises a total of about 400 square miles in Polk, Benton, and Marion Counties. Tertiary consolidated rocks underlie the entire area. These rocks include marine sandstone, siltstone, shale, tuff, basalt, and gabbro. In the lowlands, the consolidated rocks are overlain by unconsolidated deposits of clay, silt, sand, and gravel which reach a maximum thickness of about 125 feet locally. The consolidated rocks generally are poor water-bearing formations and yield only small quantities of ground water to wells. From 1956 to 1976, about 6 percent of all wells completed in basalt and 14 percent of those completed in marine sedimentary rocks were reported to be \"dry holes.\" The median yield of wells completed in the consolidated rocks was less than 10 gallons per minute, and the maximum reported yield was 200 gallons per minute. Shallow ground water in the consolidated rocks is generally of good quality, but with increasing depth in these rocks the water contains increasing concentrations of dissolved minerals. It is estimated that about 5 percent of all the wells completed in the consolidated rocks yield poor-quality water. The best water-bearing units are sand-and-gravel beds in the unconsolidated deposits. Near Independence, the sand-and-gravel beds are hydraulically continuous and exceed a saturated thickness of 10 feet over an area covering several tens of square miles chiefly within the Willamette River flood plain. Properly constructed wells in these deposits can generally obtain yields of 100 to 500 gallons per minute, and large quantities of additional ground water can be developed from this source. Outside the above area, sand-and-gravel beds generally are less than 10 feet thick, lenticular in shape, local in extent, and generally yield less than 30 gallons per minute to wells. Sand-and-gravel beds probably are absent in the Baskett Slough drainage basin, in the E. E. Wilson Wildlife Management area, and in the Luckiamute and Little Luckiamute River valleys upstream from the U.S. Highway 99W bridge.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80678","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with The United States Department of the Interior, Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Gonthier, J.B., 1983, Groundwater resources of the Dallas-Monmouth area, Polk, Benton, and Marion Counties, Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-678, Report: vi, 50 p.; 2 Plates: 23.18 x 34.68 inches and 18.78 x 12.85 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80678.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 50 p.; 2 Plates: 23.18 x 34.68 inches and 18.78 x 12.85 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405072,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_11734.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":405018,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":405017,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141630,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":405016,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","county":"Benton County, Marion County, Polk County","otherGeospatial":"Dallas-Monmouth area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.35998535156249,\n              44.79937794671695\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.12927246093751,\n              44.79937794671695\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.12927246093751,\n              44.97451370563983\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.35998535156249,\n              44.97451370563983\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.35998535156249,\n              44.79937794671695\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a94e4b07f02db6589aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gonthier, Joseph B.","contributorId":74350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gonthier","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":159240,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Six age groups of volcanic centers, eruptive products, and explosion craters are recognized in the region based on their morphology, degree of dissection, stratigraphic relationships, and degree of weathering. These features range in age from tens of thousands of years to events that have occurred this century. No magmatic eruptions have occurred in the Dieng Mountains region for at least several thousand years; volcanic activity during this time interval has consisted of phreatic eruptions and non-explosive hydrothermal activity. If future volcanic events are similar to those of the last few thousand years, they will consist of phreatic eruptions, associated small hot mudflows, emission of suffocating gases, and hydrothermal activity. Future phreatic eruptions may follow, or accompany, periods of increased earthquake activity; the epicenters for the seismicity may suggest where eruptive activity will occur. Under such circumstances, the populace within several kilometers of a potential eruption site should be warned of a possible eruption, given instructions about what to do in the event of an eruption, or temporarily evacuated to a safer location.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8368","usgsCitation":"Miller, C.D., Sushyar, R., Santoso, and Hamidi, S., 1983, Eruptive history of the Dieng Mountains region, central Java, and potential hazards from future eruptions: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-68, 22 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8368.","productDescription":"22 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142119,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0068/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34435,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0068/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fde7e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, C. Recharge to the shallow ground-water system from direct infiltration of snowmelt and rainfall is about 50 ,000 acre-ft/yr. Discharge from the system is to perennial streams (about 5,000 acre-ft/yr to the Redwater River), withdrawal by wells (about 2,000 acre-ft/yr for livestock use and 2,500 acre-ft/yr for domestic use), and 34 to 45 in./yr to evapotranspiration. Primary constituents in water above the Hell Creek Formation are sodium, bicarbonate, and sulfate, and dissolved-solids concentrations are about 1,800 mg/L; water below a depth of about 200 feet contains more sodium and bicarbonate. Water in the Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer has an average dissolved-solids concentration of 1,180 mg/L. Flows in most streams have large seasonal variations, with the largest flows occurring in the spring as a result of snowmelt and rainfall. Dissolved-solids concentrations of streams generally are largest during low flow and smallest during high flow. Concentrations ranged from 160 to 6,960 mg/L in small streams and from 400 to 600 mg/L in the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers. The 410-foot well penetrates a series of very dense basaltic lava flows of the Hana Formation. At an elevation of 10 feet above mean sea level, the well penetrated a water-bearing zone of permeable basaltic rock. Water from this zone had a head of about 76 feet above sea level. In October of 1980, the well was pump tested for 9 hours at various discharge rates up to 350 gallons per minute with a maximum drawdown of about 12 feet. Based on the test data, the well should produce water at a rate of 200 gallons per minute with a drawdown of less than 3 feet. The water level in the well was continuously monitored from October 1980 to mid-November 1981, during which period a maximum decline of 20 feet was recorded. Water level fluctuations in the well can be correlated to the flow in nearby Palikea Stream. The long-term water level in the well should stabilize at about 75 feet above sea level. Water quality was excellent. The total dissolved-solids content was 49 milligrams per liter and the chloride content was 4.2 milligrams per liter.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri834066","usgsCitation":"Souza, W.R., 1983, Exploratory drilling and aquifer testing at the Kipahulu District, Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 83-4066, v, 26 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri834066.","productDescription":"v, 26 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":58671,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4066/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123551,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1983/4066/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":411586,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35701.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Haleakala National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -156.25717163085938,\n 20.580081709180345\n ],\n [\n -156.01547241210938,\n 20.580081709180345\n ],\n [\n -156.01547241210938,\n 20.78693059257028\n ],\n [\n -156.25717163085938,\n 20.78693059257028\n ],\n [\n -156.25717163085938,\n 20.580081709180345\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49ffe4b07f02db5f78f4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Souza, W.
