Over the past 10,000 years this area was transformed from a V-shaped Pleistocene stream valley to a flat-floored arm of the San Francisco Bay estuary. \r\n\r\nA radiocarbon date obtained from a basal peat overlying nonmarine alluvial sand near the town of Mill Valley indicates that stable salt-marsh vegetation was present in the northwestern arm of Richardson Bay 4600?165 years ago and agrees within error limits with a Holocene sea-level curve developed by Atwater, Hedel, and Helley in 1977 for southern San Francisco Bay. The average sedimentation rate over the last 4600 years is estimated to be 0.2 cm/yr for the inner part of the bay. Comparison of early maps with updated versions as well as studies of marsh plant zonations in disturbed and nondisturbed areas shows that almost half of the marsh in Richardson Bay has been leveed or filled since 1899.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83312","usgsCitation":"Connor, C.L., 1983, Holocene sedimentation in Richardson Bay, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-312, 29 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83312.","productDescription":"29 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142287,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0312/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35975,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0312/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bf16","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Connor, Cathy L.","contributorId":20746,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Connor","given":"Cathy","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157666,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Over the period 1973 to 1982, the funding available for the programs supported in each category has increased, but when viewed without the effect of inflation the purchasing power of the programs has generally decreased. Funding for adjudications, compacts, and treaties increased continuously from $588,600 in 1973 to $1,035,500 in 1981, and then decreased to $1,014,200 in 1982. However, when adjusted for inflation, based on a 1972 constant dollar, the constant dollars decreased from $555,800 in 1973 to $411,900 in 1982, which indicates that purchasing power was 26% less in 1982 than in 1973. Funding for the other five categories--the National Stream Quality Accounting Network, National Benchmark Network, Other Federal Agencies within the Department of the Interior, and General Federal Agencies Outside the Department of the Interior, and General Federal Hydrologic Interests--increased during the period, but the funding increase did not keep pace with inflation. During this 1973-82 period the U.S. Geological Survey has worked to make the Federal Data Collection and Analysis Program more cost effective by more efficient operational procedures and improved instrumentation, laboratory, and computation procedures. This report is designed to be useful to mine owners, operators, regulatory authorities, citizens groups, and others by presenting information on existing hydrologic conditions and by identifying additional sources of hydrologic information. General hydrologic information is presented in a brief text accompanied by a map, chart, graph, or other illustration for each of a series of water resources-related topics. The summation of the topical discussions provides a description of the hydrology of the area.</p><p>The Eastern Coal Province has been divided into 24 hydrologic study areas which are shown on the cover of this report. The divisions are based on hydrologic factors, location, and size. Hydrologic units (surface drainage basins) or parts of units are combined to form each study area.</p><p>Area 1 covers 7,400 square miles of the Eastern Coal Province in part or all of 18 counties in west-central Pennsylvania. The major streams in the area are the West Branch Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers. Area 1 counties produced more than 20,000,000 tons of coal during 1979. About 66,000 acres of disturbed coal land in Area 1 counties are in need of reclamation.</p><p>Streamflow data have been collected at 146 locations in the area, and water-quality data have been collected at 123 locations. Interpretations of water quality in this report are generally based on a series of four water-quality samples collected at each of 113 locations during the 1979-80 water years. Water-quality data collected at these sites included: specific conductance; dissolved solids; pH; acidity; alkalinty; total and dissolved iron; total and dissolved manganese; sulfate; and bed-material iron, manganese, coal, and organic carbon. Most sites had benthic invertebrate populations sampled and analyses of bed-material constituents. A smaller set of sites was sampled for common constituents and minor elements.</p><p>Streams in Clearfield and Cambria Counties, the two leading coal producers in the area, had median specific conductances and dissolved-solids concentrations three to five times greater than those from other area counties. Clearfield County streams had the lowest median stream pH in the area. Most streams sampled in the area had acidity in excess of alkalinity. Streams in the three major coal producing counties in the area had median total-iron concentrations two to three times higher than those for other area counties, and the same general pattern was found for total manganese. The median sulfate concentration of a county's streams showed a close positive correlation with the amount of coal mined in the county. Iron and coal concentrations in bed material were higher in coal-producing counties, but manganese concentrations in bed material were not higher. Twenty-eight streams did not have a benthic biological community as defined by the Office of Surface Mining. Three-fourths of the sites with no biological community had levels of pH, acidity, iron, manganese, and sulfate indicative of acid mine drainage.</p><p>Statistics on low flow, mean flow, peak flow, and flow-duration can be computed from gaging station records for gaged streams. The same statistics can be estimated for ungaged streams through the use of regression or graphical techniques. This information may be useful in preparing and evaluating mine-permit applications.</p><p>Aquifers in the area receive most recharge from precipitation on outcrop areas. Highest ground-water levels generally occur in spring, decline during the summer, and begin to rise again during the fall. Water levels in valleys generally show less fluctuation than on hills. Median well yields in the area range from 5 to 50 gallons per minute. Ground-water supplies are obtained from more than 40 formations. Ground-water quality is generally suitable for most uses.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83223","usgsCitation":"Herb, W.J., Brown, D.E., Shaw, L.C., and Becher, A.E., 1983, Hydrology of Area 1, eastern coal province, Pennsylvania [West Branch Susquehanna River, Sinnemahoning Creek, Upper Juniata River, Clearfield Creek]: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-223, vi, 89 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83223.","productDescription":"vi, 89 p.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":149364,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0223/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":94516,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0223/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -79.31579589843749,\n              39.87601941962116\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.47558593749999,\n              39.87601941962116\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.47558593749999,\n              41.93088998442502\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.31579589843749,\n              41.93088998442502\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.31579589843749,\n              39.87601941962116\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db604b72","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Herb, William J.","contributorId":79454,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Herb","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175611,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brown, Deborah E.","contributorId":92255,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brown","given":"Deborah","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175614,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Shaw, Lewis C.","contributorId":84433,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shaw","given":"Lewis","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175612,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Becher, Albert E.","contributorId":82979,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Becher","given":"Albert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175613,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Bedrock in the area is composed of a series of metamorphic and igneous rocks. Water from wells drilled in bedrock can be obtained in sufficient quantities for domestic use nearly anywhere in the area. The median well yield for 4 different bedrock hydrogeologic units ranges from 2 to 7 gallons per minute. Unconsolidated deposits in the Rutland area include till, clay, sand, and gravel. Saturated sand and gravel capable of yielding more than 200 gallons per minute is found in the major valleys of the area. Chemical analyses of water from 72 wells indicate that 29 percent of these sources contain one or more constituents that exceed the limits recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1977, 1978) for public drinking water supplies. The most common problem constituents are iron and manganese. In addition, elevated levels of chloride and nitrate suggest that 65 percent of the sampled sources have some water-quality deterioration. Ground-water levels showed a steeply rising trend in the alluvial aquifer underlying Louisville during the early and middle 1970 's in response to above average precipitation and a decrease in ground-water withdrawals. This rising trend flattened in 1979 and the water levels are stabilizing at 25 to 45 feet below land surface in the downtown area. Basements are generally 20 to 25 feet below land surface and some utility lines are as much as 40 feet below land surface in this area. Because of the shallow depth to water, any resumption of the upward trend would require preventive measures such as selective dewatering to avoid damage to some structures. In the study area 23,700 acre-feet of ground water from the basin-fill deposits was used to irrigate more than 5,000 acres in 1981. Surface water is not a reliable source for irrigation or public supply. Ground water enters the area as underflow from the north and east and as recharge from the mountains, moves through basin-margin sediments, around the basin-center clays, and exits the area to the west beneath the Rio Sonoyta. Ground-water withdrawals in the upper Rio Sonoyta area do not appear to have an effect on water levels in the Papago Farms-Great Plain area. Depth to water ranges from 500 feet near the southern boundary to 150 feet in the center of study area. About 10 million acre-feet of recoverable ground water is stored in the upper 400 feet of the aquifer. Storage is being depleted at a rate of 19,000 acre-feet per year. The ground water is a sodium and bicarbonate type and has an anomalously high content of arsenic and fluoride. The principle behind this approach is that heavy- mineral suites commonly contain radioactive minerals that, if the concentration of heavy minerals is exposed at or within inches of the surface, enable the deposit to be located by use of airborne instruments because of its radiometric contrast with the host sediment. \r\n\r\nDetailed and regional geologic maps, soil maps, land-use and land- cover maps, information on fertilizer use, and ground-spectrometer data were used to study aeroradiometric anomalies for efficient exploration. Aeroradiometric anomalies in the Coastal Plain of Virginia have three general causes. First, the most intense anomalies are associated with cultural features, such as roads made of granitic material. Second, most anomalies of high to intermediate intensity are associated with land used for agricultural purposes and evidently are caused by applications of radioactive fertilizer. Third, anomalies of intermediate to low intensity are associated with heavy-mineral deposits. \r\n\r\nResults of this study show that aeroradiometric anomalies associated with heavy-mineral accumulations in the Coastal Plain of Virginia have ground radiometric spectra in which thorium is the strongest component and uranium and potassium are lesser components. \r\n\r\nHeavy-mineral accumulations found in this study by use of the aeroradiometric data are not considered to be of economic importance, mostly because of the low percentage of economic minerals in the heavy-mineral suites and also because of other factors such as the very fine grained nature of the host sediments and competing land use.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1263","usgsCitation":"Grosz, A.E., and Kosanke, K.L., 1983, Application of total-count aeroradiometric maps to the exploration for heavy-mineral deposits in the coastal plain of Virginia, with a section on field-spectrometer-data reduction: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1263, Report: iii, 20 p.; 5 Plates: 41.00 × 29.00 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1263.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 20 p.; 5 Plates: 41.00 × 29.00 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":32871,"rank":301,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1263/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":32870,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1263/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":32869,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1263/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":32868,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1263/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":32867,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1263/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":32866,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1263/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124939,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1263/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":104587,"rank":8,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4775.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"4775"}],"country":"United States","state":"Virginia","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.95898437499999,\n              36.527294814546245\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.146484375,\n              36.527294814546245\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.146484375,\n              38.788345355085625\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.95898437499999,\n              38.788345355085625\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.95898437499999,\n              36.527294814546245\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a567","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grosz, A. All waste is buried in the Nancy Member of the Borden Formation, and most is in the weathered shale (regolith) part of this member. Recharge to the rocks is probably by infiltration of rainfall through regolith at the top of the hill. At least two water tables are present: near the base of the regolith, at a depth of about 25 feet and; in the Ohio Shale, at a depth of about 300 feet. About 95 percent of ground-water discharge to streams is from colluvium on hillsides and valley alluvium. The remaining 5 percent is discharge from bedrock, of which about 0.5 percent is from rocks underlying the burial area. Waste radionuclides in the subsurface, other than tritium, were observed only in the regolith of the Nancy Member. Only tritium was observed with certainty in deeper rocks and in the adjacent valley alluvium. Other waste radionuclides were in streamwater and stream sediment, and may have been transported with overland runoff from the surface of the burial site. Very little information is available concerning AVM operation, performance, and limitations. The purpose of this report is to consolidate information in such a manner as to provide a better understanding about the application of this instrumentation to streamflow measurement. \r\n\r\nAVM instrumentation is highly accurate and nonmechanical. Most commercial AVM systems that measure streamflow use the time-of-travel method to determine a velocity between two points. The systems operate on the principle that point-to-point upstream travel-time of sound is longer than the downstream travel-time, and this difference can be monitored and measured accurately by electronics. \r\n\r\nAVM equipment has no practical upper limit of measurable velocity if sonic transducers are securely placed and adequately protected. AVM systems used in streamflow measurement generally operate with a resolution of ?0.01 meter per second but this is dependent on system frequency, path length, and signal attenuation. In some applications the performance of AVM equipment may be degraded by multipath interference, signal bending, signal attenuation, and variable streamline orientation. \r\n\r\nPresently used minicomputer systems, although expensive to purchase and maintain, perform well. Increased use of AVM systems probably will be realized as smaller, less expensive, and more conveniently operable microprocessor-based systems become readily available. \r\n\r\nAvailable AVM equipment should be capable of flow measurement in a wide variety of situations heretofore untried. New signal-detection techniques and communication linkages can provide additional flexibility to the systems so that operation is possible in more river and estuary situations.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2213","usgsCitation":"Laenen, A., and Smith, W., 1983, Acoustic systems for the measurement of streamflow: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2213, iv, 26 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2213.","productDescription":"iv, 26 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","numberOfPages":"30","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138434,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2213/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":27620,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2213/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b08e4b07f02db69bc60","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Laenen, Antonius","contributorId":107673,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laenen","given":"Antonius","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144627,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, Winchell","contributorId":20311,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Winchell","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144626,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Submarine canyons are the dominant morphologic feature in both areas. The Continental Slope in the Baltimore Canyon area has a general sea-floor gradient of 3?-4? and a width of approximately 40 km, whereas the study area north of Cape Hatteras has a general sea-floor gradient of approximately 9? and a width of 20 km. The dominant slope process differs in each area. In the Baltimore Canyon area, subbottom reflectors suggest that sediment deposition with progradation of the slope is related to canyon processes. In the study area north of Cape Hatteras, the canyons appear erosional and mass wasting is the dominant erosional process. Dominant slope processes appear to be correlated with the width and sea-floor gradient of the Continental Slope. Although the absolute age of the canyons is difficult to determine without rotary-drill cores for stratigraphic control, Baltimore Canyon is suggested to be older than the shelf-indenting canyon just north of Cape Hatteras. An anomalously large ridge flanking Baltimore Canyon on the upper rise appears to be related to canyon depositional and erosional processes.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83735","usgsCitation":"McGregor, B., 1983, Submarine canyon and slope processes of the U.S. Atlantic continental margin: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-735, ii, 34 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83735.","productDescription":"ii, 34 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153674,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0735/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":49618,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0735/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699bc5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McGregor, B.A.","contributorId":57072,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McGregor","given":"B.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181988,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
