Both volcanoes are viewed from the north from 30 degrees above the horizon, with no vertical exaggeration. The ground area portrayed in each diagram is equal; the south edge of the Mount St. Helens drawing is lower than that of Crater Lake drawing because elevations drop away toward the south, whereas elevations are more constant at the north and south edges of the Crater Lake diagram.

procedures and methodology of coal description","docAbstract":"This document is the result of a workshop on coal description held for the Branch of Coal Resources of the U.S. Geological Survey in March 1982. It has been prepared to aid and encourage the field-oriented coal scientist to participate directly in petrographic coal-description activities. The objectives and past and current practices of coal description vary widely. These are briefly reviewed and illustrated with examples. Sampling approaches and techniques for collecting columnar samples of fresh coal are also discussed. The recommended procedures and methodology emphasize the fact that obtaining a good megascopic description of a coal bed is much better done in the laboratory with a binocular microscope and under good lighting conditions after the samples have been cut and quickly prepared. For better observation and cross-checking using a petrographic microscope for identification purposes, an in-place polishing procedure (requiring less than 2 min) is routinely used. Methods for using both the petrographic microscope and an automated image analysis system are also included for geologists who have access to such instruments. To describe the material characteristics of a coal bed in terms of microlithotypes or lithotypes, a new nomenclature of (V), (E), (1), (M). (S). (X1). (X2) and so on is used. The microscopic description of the modal composition of a megascopically observed lithologic type is expressed in terms of (VEIM); subscripts are used to denote the volume percentage of each constituent present. To describe a coal-bed profile, semiquantitative data (without microscopic study) and quantitative data (with microscopic study) are presented in ready-to-understand form. The average total composition of any thickness interval or of the entire coal bed can be plotted on a triangular diagram having V, E, and I+ M +S as the apices. The modal composition of any mixed lithologies such as (X1), (X2), and so on can also be plotted on such a triangular ternary diagram. The isostatic residual gravity map (fig. 1) primarily reflects lateral density variations within the upper crust beneath the region studied. The aeromagnetic map reflects the distribution of magnetization in the underlying rocks. Because different rock types are often characterized by different densities and magnetic properties, the geophysical maps can be used to extend the geologic mapping into areas covered by surficial deposits and to help determine the subsurface locations and attitudes of contacts between rock units with contrasting properties.

Results must be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report presents the results of an aeromagnetic survey of the Arnold Mesa Roadless Area (U.S. Forest Service number 03092) in the Prescott and Tonto National Forests, Yavapai County, Arizona. The Arnold Mesa Roadless Area was classified as a further planning area during the Second Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) by the U.S. Forest Service, January 1979.
\nThe Arnold Mesa Roadless Area is within the transition zone between the Colorado Plateaus to the northeast and the Basin and Range province to the southwest. The transition zone is a belt about 701 miles (120 km) wide that extends diagonally from northwest to south east across central Arizona and parallels the topographic margin of the plateaus. The study area is underlain by Precambrian rocks and gently dipping Paleozoic strata that are largely covered by basaltic lavas and pyroclastic deposits of Miocene age ( McKee and Anderson, 1971). Dacite breccia and tuff are locally interbedded with the basaltic rocks. Sedimentary deposits of late Cenozoic age are dominant in the Verde Valley from about Chasm Creek north; they accumulated in a depositional basin bounded on the west by the Verde fault.

Part of the area has been known as the Powderhorn Primitive Area. The mineral resource potential of the study area has been assessed by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines; this assessment involved, besides the geologic study and economic appraisal (Sharp and others, 1983), a geophysical survey (this report) by the Geological Survey, and a geochemical survey (Sharp and Lane, 1983) by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines.
