Inherent dangers, associated with water analysis and research laboratories where hazardous samples, materials, and equipment are used, must be minimized to protect workers, buildings, and equipment. Managers, supervisors, analysts, and laboratory support personnel each have specific responsibilities to reduce hazards by maintaining a safe work environment. General rules of conduct and safety practices that involve personal protection, laboratory practices, chemical handling, compressed gases handling, use of equipment, and overall security must be practiced by everyone at all levels. \r\n\r\nRoutine and extensive inspections of all laboratories must be made regularly by qualified people. Personnel should be trained thoroughly and repetitively. Special hazards that may involve exposure to carcinogens, cryogenics, or radiation must be given special attention, and specific rules and operational procedures must be established to deal with them. The water was very hard (hardness greater than 180 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate). The concentrations of principal dissolved constituents varied in relation to releases from Lake Granbury and in relation to runoff from the intervening drainage area. Releases from upstream reservoirs associated with heavy rainfall during August 1978 showed a marked increase in concentrations of all dissolved constituents.</p>\n<p>Thermal stratification in Lake Whitney usually begins during April and persists until October. Stratification causes significant seasonal and areal variations in the concentration of dissolved oxygen, which cause variations in the concentrations of dissolved iron, dissolved manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Oxygen utilized in the decay of organic matter and bottom material is not replenished during periods of summer stagnation, and water below depths of 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 meters) usually contains less than 2.0 milligrams per liter of dissolved oxygen.</p>\n<p>During summer stagnation, reducing conditions result in the dissolution of iron and manganese from the bottom deposits in the lake. At site AC, a deep site near Whitney Darn, dissolved iron concentrations in water near the bottom during summer stagnation ranged from 90 to 400 micrograms per liter and averaged about 195 micrograms per liter. Dissolved manganese concentrations ranged from 240 to 2,100 micrograms per liter and averaged about 1,400 micrograms per liter. During winter circulation and in water near the surface during summer stagnation, both iron and manganese concentrations averaged less than 40 micrograms per liter.</p>\n<p>The concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus are greatest during summer stagnation in water near the bottom at deep sites. At site A c during the summer, the concentration of total inorganic nitrogen near the bottom averaged 1.3 milligrams per liter and the concentration of total phosphorus near the bottom averaged 0.28 milligram per liter. Derivative, wavelength-filtered, and trend maps were compiled to aid in properly locating major geophysical trends corresponding to faults, folds, and lithologic boundaries. The anomaly maps indicate that Paradox Basin is characterized by a heterogeneous Precambrian basement, essentially a metamorphic complex of gneisses and schist intruded by granitic rocks and mafic to ultramafic bodies. Interpreted Precambrian structures trend predominantly northwest and northeast although east-west trending features are evident. Prominent gravity lows define the salt anticlines. Structural and lithologic trends in the Gibson Dome area are closely examined. Of greatest interest is a series of circular magnetic highs trending west-northwest into the Gibson Dome area. The data are for 1979 and reflect the pumpage from about 1,100 wells in 485 communities. The distribution and amount of pumpage is estimated to be similar for subsequent years.</p>\n<p>Of the water pumped for public supplies, 95 percent comes from two major aquifers--the sand-and-gravel and the sandstone aquifers. Lesser amounts of water come from the Silurian dolomite, which is present onlyl in a narrow band in eastern Wisconsin, and from the generally low-yielding Precambrian basement rock that underlies the The aquifer, composed of upper sandstone units of the Arikaree Formation, and the overlying Ogallala and Sand Hills Formations, was simulated using a two-dimensional, finite-difference computer model. The maximum difference between simulated and measured potentiometric heads was less than 60 feet (1- to 4-percent error). Two-thirds of the simulated potentiometric heads were within 26 feet of the measured values (3-percent error). The estimated saturated thickness, computed from simulated potentiometric heads, was within 25-percent error of the known saturated thickness for 95 percent of the study area. Multiple-regression techniques were used to define the relationship between a suite of basin and climatic characteristics and flood peaks in three flood-frequency regions at a total of 95 sites. Station flood-frequency data were computed following guidelines in Bulletin 17A of the U.S. Water Resources Council. The frequency analyses are based upon weighted skew values, adjustments for high and low outliers, and historic peak data. \r\n\r\nRegression equations for estimation of peak discharges for 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.04, 0.02, and 0.01 exceedance probabilities are provided for ungaged sites. An improved sample of flood peaks and gaging stations and the definition of three flood-frequency regions reduced the standard errors of estimate by about 5 percent over those for the 1977 relations. Included in this analysis were the synthetic flood-frequency data at 8 sites computed using historic climatic data and 10 parameters optimized by calibration of the U.S. Geological Survey's rainfall-runoff model with storm data observed over 11 years. \r\n\r\nThe equations are applicable to streams unaffected by regulation where the usable manmade storage is less than 4.5 million cubic feet per square mile, or by diversions or urbanization. The equations are restricted to sites where the basin indices are within a specified range outside of eastern Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, or Nantucket Counties.
