Leachates from these wastes are migrating from the disposal site in surface runoff, through shallow perched water zones, and through the local water-table aquifer. Compounds identified in the leachates included: dieldrin, endrin , chlordene, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, pentachlorocyclopentadiene, and hexachloro-bicycloheptadiene. The rate of migration of some of the leachate compounds in the water-table aquifer was found to be at least 80 feet per year. Data collected during a recent study of the hydrogeology of the county and updated records of earlier studies have been used to prepare contour maps that delineate the surfaces of the bedrock and the Upper Cretaceous and pre-Wisconsin Pleistocene deposits. The presence of diabase fragments apparently from the Hudson Palisades in a buried valley through the county suggests that the ancestral Hudson River was diverted into Queens County in Pleistocene time. The contour maps are useful to engineers, ground-water-supply managers, well drillers, and others concerned with subsurface geology in the area. A map showing the apleotopography and geology at the time of the ancestral Hudson River 's entrance into the county is useful in understanding the areal geomorphology. Stage and discharge data were collected during 1973-77 at 6 recording and 45 crest-stage gages within the basin and combined with discharge records on the main channel of the Sacramento River to determine total flow and flow distribution at the latitudes of Ord Ferry, Butte City, and Gridley Road. Water-surface profiles throughout the basin, inflow/change-in-storage/outflow relations of the Butte Sink, and channel changes of the Sacramento River are shown. During 1973-77, total peak flows decreased an average of 7 percent between the latitudes of Ord Ferry and Butte City, with measured peaks from 100,000 to 200,000 cfs (cubic feet per second). The largest floodflow measured was 195,000 cfs on January 17, 1974, at the latitude of Ord Ferry. For a given flood, overland flow did not change significantly in peak magnitude between Afton Boulevard, Butte City, and Gridley road. Overland flows of about 45,000 and about 24,000 cfs were measured on January 18 and April 1, 1974, respectively. The method was developed by multiple-regression techniques. The State is divided into two regions and sets of equations for calculating peak discharges based on physical basin characteristics are provided for each region. The boundary between regions generally corresponds with the division between the Piedmont and Coastal Plain provinces. In the northern region, flood-peak discharges were related to basin drainage area and storage. In the southern region, flood peaks were related to drainage area, slope, storage, forest cover, and two composite soil categories. Standard errors of estimate for the regression equations in the northern region ranged from 30 to 39 percent. For the southern region, the standard errors of estimate varied from 38 to 40 percent. Without using the two soil parameters in the southern region, the standard errors of estimate varied from 57 to 70 percent. Annual flood peaks, basin characteristics, and flood-frequency distributions are tabulated for the 60-gaged sites used in the regression analysis. At 23 of these sites, a rainfall-runoff model generated additional flood-peak data which were used in defining the flood-frequency distributions. The oil in shallow basins is directly associated with faulting extending out of the deepest parts of the basin. Evidence exists that some of these shallow basins have been much hotter in the past either from igneous activity or from a higher geothermal gradient. Uplift and erosion may also have removed substantial thicknesses of sediments in some of these basins. Oil on the stable shallow shelves of deep basins may have originated in the deeper part of the basin and undergone long lateral migration to the traps where it is now found. Conduits for such migration have been sandstones in delta-distributary systems (eastern Oklahoma and Kansas), reef trends (Alberta, Canada), or regional porosity and permeability in sheet carbonates (Anadarko basin, western Oklahoma and Kansas).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr781021","usgsCitation":"Price, L.C., 1978, Hot, deep origin of petroleum: shelf and shallow basin evidence and application: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-1021, 72 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr781021.","productDescription":"72 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153195,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1021/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50062,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/1021/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db688080","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Price, Leigh C.","contributorId":39379,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Price","given":"Leigh","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182822,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Analyses of samples of chiefly lacustrine rocks of Oligocene age collected by M. R. Mudge near Lincoln, Mont. showed as much as 1,500 ppm lithium. Since then we have sampled the area in greater detail, and have sampled rocks of similar ages in the Helena and Townsend valleys. \r\n\r\nThe lithium-rich beds crop out in a band about 1.3 km long by 0.3 km wide near the head of Beaver Creek, about 14 km northwest of Lincoln, Mont. These beds consist of laminated marlstone, oil shale, carbonaceous shale, limestone, conglomerate, and tuff. Some parts of this sequence average almost 0.1 percent lithium. The lithium-bearing rocks are too low in grade and volume to be economic. \r\n\r\nSamples of sedimentary rocks of Oligocene age from the Helena and Townsend valleys in the vicinity of Helena, Mont. were generally low in lithium (3-40 ppm). However, samples of rhyolites from the western side of the Helena valley and from the Lava Mountain area were slightly above average in lithium content (6-200 ppm).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78430","usgsCitation":"Brenner-Tourtelot, E.F., Meier, A.L., and Curtis, C.A., 1978, Lithium in rocks from the Lincoln, Helena, and Townsend areas, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-430, 27 leaves :fold. map (in pocket) ;30 cm.; (29 p., 1 sheet - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78430.","productDescription":"27 leaves :fold. map (in pocket) ;30 cm.; (29 p., 1 sheet - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140542,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0430/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35614,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0430/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35615,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0430/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b13e4b07f02db6a37f9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brenner-Tourtelot, Elizabeth F.","contributorId":103672,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brenner-Tourtelot","given":"Elizabeth","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157033,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Meier, Allen L.","contributorId":14384,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meier","given":"Allen","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157032,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Curtis, Craig A.","contributorId":103673,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curtis","given":"Craig","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157034,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The ground-water system in the Cypress Creek well-field area consists of a surficial sand aquifer, a semiconfining clay layer ranging from 2 to 25 feet in thickness, and a sequence of carbonate rocks, approximately 1,000 feet thick, called the Floridan aquifer. All recharge to the Floridan aquifer in the local area is derived from the overlying surficial sand aquifer by downward percolation through the semiconfining clay bed. The major proportion of water supplied to municipal wells open to the Floridan aquifer comes from a dolomitic section of the Avon Park Limestone containing two major cavernous zones. The area lies within the Coronado National Forest and forms a belt around the north, east, and south sides of the Saguaro National Monument (fig. 1). A mineral resource survey was made of the area in 1977 by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This study indicates that the potential for finding metallic or nonmetallic mineral deposits, petroleum or coal or geothermal energy in the study area is low. This appraisal is based on geologic and geochemical investigations and on examination of all mineralized prospects. A geologic map was made of the area and its immediate surrounding. Chemical and spectrographic analyses were made of 1.30 stream-sediment samples and of 143 rock samples. The locations of mining claims were compiled and samples from most of the claims were assayed. There has been no recorded mineral production from within the study area.</p><p>The geology of the Rincon Mountains is structurally complex. The core of the Rincon Mountains, lying mainly within the Saguaro National Monument, is underlain by igneous and metamorphic rocks chiefly of Precambrian and Tertiary ages. The study area lies on the flanks of the mountains in a terrain of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks mainly of Precambrian through mid-Tertiary age. The rocks of this area are cut by many faults, with low-angle or bedding-parallel faults abundant. the distribution of these faulted rocks around the flanks of the Rincon Mountains is the result of a doming in the core area, the sliding of rock masses from the high part of the dome down its flanks, and to the effects of erosion.</p><p>The potential for economic metallic mineral deposits is considered low because the known areas of anomalous concentrations of metals are small and the concentration of metals weak and erratic. The surface signs of mineralization are largely restricted to 4 locales in which some prospects exist (fig. 1): (1) east of Colossal Cave, southwest or the Rincon Mountains, (2) north of Happy Valley, east of the mountains, (3) between Roble and Youtcy Canyons, northeast of the mountains, and (4) near Italian Trap north of the mountains. Very little primary sulfide mineralization is present and signs of alteration are restricted to narrow zones along faults and fractures. The geochemical anomalies are weak. The sites at which anomalous values of copper, molybdenum, or silver were obtained are mainly controlled by faults.</p><p>Nonmetallic mineral resources occur in deposits that are too small and too remote to be economically attractive. Sand and gravel deposits in the main drainages are similar to larger deposits that occur closer to nearby highways and cities. Limestone and marble present in some of the metamorphic rocks are too impure and too broken for use as dimension stone. Use of this marble as decorative rock is limited by remote markets. Limestone suitable for making cement is not likely to be found in large quantities within the Rincon wilderness study area. Closely spaced fractures in the granitic rocks makes them of little value for building stone.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78596","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Mines","usgsCitation":"Thorman, C.H., Drewes, H., and Lane, M., 1978, Mineral resources of the Rincon wilderness study area, Pima County, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-596, iii, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78596.","productDescription":"iii, 58 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":413305,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0596/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140150,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0596/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","county":"Pima County","otherGeospatial":"Rincon wilderness study area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -110.76135252193272,\n              32.26816566918097\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.76135252193272,\n              32.088986940125736\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.3780838038202,\n              32.088986940125736\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.3780838038202,\n              32.26816566918097\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.76135252193272,\n              32.26816566918097\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e8e4b07f02db5e8f5f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thorman, Charles H. cthorman@usgs.gov","contributorId":254,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Thorman","given":"Charles","email":"cthorman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":7065,"text":"USGS emeritus","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":155357,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Drewes, Harald","contributorId":52567,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drewes","given":"Harald","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155359,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lane, Michael","contributorId":39756,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lane","given":"Michael","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155358,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The basin characteristics significant at the 5-percent probability level were drainage area and percentage imperviousness. Drainage area can be measured from maps, while percentage of imperviousness can either be measured from aerial photographs or estimated from land-use projections. These equations are based upon the analysis of hydrologic data collected at 30 continuous-recording gaging stations with drainage areas ranging from 0.8 to 39.0 square miles, and with impervious areas ranging from 1 to 32 percent.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri78139","usgsCitation":"Spencer, D.W., and Alexander, T.W., 1978, Technique for estimating We conclude that the most efficient way to search for exploration targets is to collect rock samples from the ledges and analyze for the following elements in decreasing order of priority: gold, lead and silver, bismuth, and mercury. These elements form relict hypogene aureoles restricted to the ledges and are not appreciably redistributed during supergene leaching.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr78228","usgsCitation":"Ashley, R.P., and Keith, W.J., 1978, Geochemical explorations for gold deposits at Goldfield, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-228, i, 8 leaves ;27 cm.; (17 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78228.","productDescription":"i, 8 leaves ;27 cm.; (17 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142265,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0228/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35236,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0228/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6ae2b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ashley, Roger P. ashley@usgs.gov","contributorId":2749,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ashley","given":"Roger","email":"ashley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":156555,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Keith, William J.","contributorId":21146,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keith","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156556,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The upper glacial aquifer is the sole source of freshwater supply for Shelter Island 's population, which currently ranges seasonally from 2,000 to 8,000. Fresh ground water seems to be limited to sand and gravel deposits in the aquifer, which is thin and can be readily infiltrated by surrounding saline ground water. The aquifer is underlain by confining clay formations that contain saline water, and the geologic formations below the clay probably contain saline water also. The fresh ground water is mostly soft and has low dissolved-solids concentrations; however, several wells near shorelines have yielded excessive amounts of chloride. Man-induced contamination of the aquifer is evident but not severe, as shown by somewhat elevated concentrations of nitrate nitrogen and methylene blue active substances (MBAS). Increased pumping will cause deterioration of the fresh ground-water supply by inducing saline-water infiltration and by adding greater volumes of septic-tank and cesspool effluents to the aquifer. Test drilling could help in water-supply management by determining the extent of the aquifer and of fresh ground-water storage, and observation wells could provide early detection of saline-water infiltration.
