High anomalous tungsten values were found in the southern part of the study area. Quartz-vein deposits with copper, lead, zinc, and silver may occur within the Jurassic granitic rock in the northwestern part of the area. </p><p>Stream-sediment and panned-concentrate samples from the northwestern part of the roadless area, reveal anomalous values in a number of elements. Some of these elements are indicative of mineral suites that form by hydrothermal alteration and are potential metallic-ore producers. Metals having anomalous values are antimony, copper, lead, molybdenum, tin, and zinc; their presence suggests the potential for deposits of the lead-zinc-silver or copper-molybdenum type. </p><p>Molybdenum and lead were identified by geochemical sampling as having low to moderate potential in the roadless area. </p><p>An estimated 190,000 tons (172,000 t) of subeconomic gold and silver resources are inside the roadless area at the Gold Crown, Gold Webb, and Gold Wedge mines; another 60,000 tons (54,000 t) of subeconomic gold and silver resources are just outside the area at the Tower, Gold Webb, and Gold Wedge mines (table 1). Most of the lode gold and silver deposits are in quartz veins and shear zones. Minor amounts of copper, lead, and zinc occur in some gold deposits. About 2,240 oz (70 kg) of gold, 8,450 oz (260 kg) of silver, and 4,600 lb of lead (2,090 kg) have been produced from the roadless area. Collectively, the participants had backgrounds in \ndisaster preparedness, disaster response and recovery, geology, geophysics, \nseismology, engineering, architecture, social science, law, insurance, and \nland-use planning. Two-thirds of them came from the Mississippi Valley area\nabout one half of these had also attended an earlier USGS-FEMA workshop held \nin Knoxville, Tennessee on September 16-18, 1981 (Hays, 1982).</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The St. Louis workshop is the 18th in the continuing series of \nconferences and workshops which the Geological Survey initiated in 1977 to \nimprove the transfer and application of research results throughout the \nNation. It is the second workshop to focus on dealing with the earthquake \nthreat in the Eastern United States. The first one, \"Preparing for and \nResponding to a Damaging Earthquake in the Eastern United States,\" was held in \nKnoxville, Tennessee, and emphasized the development of a draft 5-year plan to \nimprove the state-of-earthquake-preparedness. The Knoxville workshop \ndemonstrated that policymakers and members of the scientific-technical \ncommunity can assimilate and synthesize a great deal of information and work \ntogether to devise practical plans. The St. Louis workshop, a sequel to the \nKnoxville workshop, identified those actions out of the range of possible \nactions which are most achievable; that is, the actions having the highest\npayoff and trre lowest cost and effort requirements. These action plans, which \nidentify steps that can be undertaken immediately to reduce losses from \nearthquakes in each of the seven States in the Mississippi Valley area, are \ncontained in this report. The draft 5-year plan for the Central United \nStates, prepared in the Knoxville workshop, was the starting point of the \nsmall group discussions in the St. Louis workshop which lead to the action \nplans contained in this report. Samples were obtained during pumping of water from the entire well bore (composite sample) and in one instance by pumping water from a single isolated interval in well UE-25b number 1. Sodium is the most abundant cation and bicarbonate the most abundant anion in all water samples. Although the general chemical compositions of individual samples are similar, there are significant differences in uncorrected carbon-14 age and in inorganic and stable-isotope composition. Flow surveys of seven wells performed using iodine-131 as a tracer indicate that groundwater production is usually from one or more discrete zones of permeability. Va. main attraction is a combination of scenic wilderness, fishing, cultural resources, and whitewater boating. However, recreational quality, safety, and use of the river depends in part upon the amount and fluctuations in streamflow, manmade and natural. During 1981 and 1982, the U.S. Geological Survey found that the flood wave travels at an average speed of 6.8 miles per hour when streamflow is 15,000 cubic feet per second and 3.5 miles per hour when streamflow is 2,200 cubic feet per second. Curves have been developed to estimate traveltimes between any two points within the National River jurisdiction. \r\n\r\nThe gaging station at Thurmond, installed as part of this study, can be called by telephone, (304) 465-0493, to determine river stage. These induced compressive stresses are predicted by computer calculations, but have never been adequately confirmed by field measurements, owing primarily to the unique difficulties of obtaining such field data. Vibrating-wire stressmeter measurements made near the Mighty Epic nuclear detonation, however, qualitatively indicate that within 150 meters of the working point, permanent compressive stress increases of several megapascals were present 15 weeks after the event. Additionally, stress-change magnitudes interpreted from the stressmeter data between the 75- and 260-meter range from the working point compare favorably with calculational predictions of the stress changes believed to be present shortly after detonation of the event. The measurements and calculations differ, however, with regard to the pattern of stress change radial and transverse to the explosion source. For the range of the field measurements from the working point, computer models predict the largest compressive-stress increase to be radial to the explosion source, while the field data indicate the transverse component of. stress change to be the most compressive. The measurements, made at various depths in two exploratory boreholes, suggest that the local stress field is not uniform. Estimates of the least principal stress magnitude vary over distances of a few tens of meters, with the smaller values averaging 2.9 MPa and the larger values averaging 5.5 MPa. The smaller values are in agreement with the minimum-stress magnitude of 2.8 MPa determined in a nearby drift in 1979, using an overcoring technique.
