This report covers 10 counties and parts of 6 others comprising the District. Data used to develop the report were retrieved from the water-quality files of the U.S. Geological Survey. Considerable vertical and areal variation of chemical constituents was found in ground water of the Floridan aquifer. In general, ground water becomes more mineralized with increasing depth and with increasing distance from recharge areas due to solution of minerals from the aquifer. Ground water was also more mineralized with proximity to the coast, due to saltwater intrusion. Water levels in most of the study area have not changed appreciably, except in parts of Hardee, Hillsborough, Manatee, Polk, and Sarasota Counties. In these areas, ground-water pumpage by industry and agriculture caused long-term declines of water levels. The largest declines are centered in the agricultural area of southern Hillsborough and northern Manatee Counties where pumpage lowered water levels more than 30 feet since 1964. Hydrographs of 10 wells show that, during 1976-80, the downward water-level trend discontinued in areas of heavy pumpage and, in areas not affected by pumping, water levels remained fairly unchanged. Water levels rose more than 20 feet from May 1975 to May 1980 in southwest Polk, Hardee , northeast Sarasota, northeast Manatee, and southwest Hillsborough Counties. In the heavily pumped area of northern Hillsborough County, water levels rose 5 to 10 feet. From September 1975 to September 1980, water levels in southwest Polk County rose more than 10 feet. Water in the bedrock occurs in fractures in the otherwise dense, poorly permeable rock. Deposits of sand and gravel in the glacial drift provide the best yields to wells drilled into unconsolidated materials. Specific capacities of bedrock wells are typically low, and those of glacial-drift wells considerably higher. Ground water is high in dissolved solids and hardness; 29 of 56 wells sampled had water classified as very hard. Sixteen percent of the 171 ground-water sites tested for indicator bacteria had positive counts of one or more of these bacteria: total coliform , fecal coliform, fecal streptococcus. Nine percent of the 279 wells sampled for chloride in September 1981, appear to be affected by seawater intrusion. All of these wells are located within a mile of the coast; 60 percent of these wells are on Lopez Island. In 1980 an estimated total of 220 million gallons of ground water was withdrawn for all uses. Ninety percent of all ground-water use is for domestic and public supply purposes. Heavy pumpage on northern and southern Lopez Island correlates with areas having high chloride concentrations. Part of the flooding is caused by the raising of Lake Audubon about 13 feet from an elevation of about 1,835 feet to 1,848 feet and its effect on ground-water levels in the upper unit of the Lake Nettie aquifer by way of leakage from the lower unit. The major part of the flooding is caused by the greater than normal precipitation and the resulting runoff. </p><p>Recharge to the aquifer is from the direct infiltration of precipitation and snowmelt, the lateral percolation of water from the adjacent Fort Union Formation and glacial-drift aquifers, and from Lake Audubon. Discharge is by evapotranspiration and by ground-water movement into undrained surface-water basins in the Lake Holmes-Lake Williams area and southward through Lake Ordway or westward to Lake Audubon. </p><p>Trends shown on hydrographs indicate that near equilibrium between recharge and discharge has been reestablished in the lower unit of the Lake Nettie aquifer in the area between Lake Audubon and Lake Nettie, but east of Lake Nettie water levels are still rising. As of 1982, water-level rises caused by the raising of Lake Audubon are as much as 4 feet in the lower unit of the Lake Nettie aquifer and are between 1 and 2 feet in the upper unit of the Lake Nettie aquifer, which is hydraulically connected to Lake Nettie, Crooked Lake, and Slough No. 1. There is a rise in Slough No. 1, about 2 miles east of Lake Audubon, that can be attributed to the higher levels of Lake Audubon. Apparently rises also have occurred in many other sloughs. </p><p>Water levels have risen in the Turtle Lake aquifer both as a result of raising the water level in Lake Audubon to an elevation of about 1,848 feet and the McClusky Canal to an elevation of about 1,844 feet. The area irrigated was 4 miles southwest of Tallahassee, Florida, on an area covered in part by pine forest and in part by selected grasses and forage crops. Hydrologic and geologic data were collected from 1972 to 1981. Hydrologic data include ground-water levels, water quality, and spray-irrigation rates. Ground-water level measurements were made at 60 wells. Water-quality samples were collected at 1 municipal wastewater effluent site, 3 springs, 17 soil sites, and 64 wells. Water-quality data were obtained from physical, chemical, and bacteriological analyses. Geologic data include geophysical logs and lithologic descriptions of 34 wells. Although occurring in limited area, forest communities add considerably to the total ecological diversity of the State. The forests of the Pembina Hills region in northeastern North Dakota are one of only three areas large enough to be considered of commercial value. During 1981 we studied the avifauna of the upper valley of the Pembina River in the Pembina Hills. Field work extended from 20 April to 23 July; breeding bird censuses were conducted 7 June to 2 July. Of the 120 bird species recorded during the study period, 79 species were recorded during the breeding season. The total breeding population was estimated at nearly 76,000 breeding pairs. The wood warblers (Parulidae) were the most numerous family, accounting for about 28,000 breeding pairs. The yellow warbler (Dendroica petechia) was the most abundant breeding species, making up 19.4% of the population. American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) was second in abundance, accounting for 10.5% of the breeding population. Largest breeding densities occurred in the willow (Salix sp.) shrub community. Although supporting the lowest mean breeding density, quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) forests supported the highest species diversity. First State breeding records were recorded for alder flycatcher (Empidonax alnorum) and golden-winged warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera). Records were obtained for 12 species considered rare or unusual in North Dakota during the breeding season. One modification, the Santee-Cooper diversion project, caused a twentyfold increase in freshwater inflow to the harbor. The other modification was deepening of the navigation channels in the harbor from 30 to 35 feet below mean low water. After field and model studies indicated that the diversion was the major cause of the increase in the sedimentation rate, plans were made to redivert most of the Santee River water back to its former channel. This report documents a review of existing data and literature that was made to evaluate rediversion as a means of reducing the rate of maintenance dredging. The postrediversion decrease in the rate of maintenance dredging can be estimated only within broad limits because some important questions lack reliable answers. Analysis of available information indicates that rediversion will eventually reduce the rate of maintenance dredging by about 40 to 75 percent.
