The aeromagnetic data show marked correlation with the surface geology, and the resulting interpretation defines nine magnetic provinces inferred to reflect bodies of granitic rock possessing homogeneous magnetic properties. Several magnetic lineations of possible structural significance are identified and probably relate to Najd faulting. Older structures of the Hijaz tectonic cycle cannot unequivocally be defined.</p>\n<p>Four of the younger granitic bodies are interpreted to be tabular in cross-section and of finite thickness on the basis of magnetic anomalies defined by high-amplitude, short-wavelength, positive anomalies along the southern margin of the body and counterpart negative anomalies along the northern margin. One of these bodies, a granodiorite porphyry in the northwestern part of the Al Jurdhawiyah quadrangle, is estimated to be from 4 to 7 km thick on the basis of calculations of gravity data. Older granites possess no edge anomalies and therefore are interpreted to extend to greater depth. Peralkaline granites are distinctively nonmagnetic and are identifiable in the aeromagnetic data as areas of little magnetic relief.</p>\n<p>Correlation of aeromagnetic data and mineral deposit information provide justification for some prospecting guides. Small granodiorite-porphyry plutons with distinct edge anomalies in Murdama metasediments commonly are associated with copper-gold-bearing quartz veins. Vein orientations in these and most other known deposits in the northeastern Shield cannot be sensibly related to the stress field of the Najd fault system, and are believed to predate the Najd or to have been governed by local factors. A hydrologic study was conducted in the potential lease area in 1981 to describe the existing hydrologic system and to assess potential impacts of surface coal mining on local water resources. The hydrologic data collected from wells, test holes, and springs were used to identify aquifers in the alluvium (Pleistocene and Holocene age) and the Tongue River member of the Fort Union Formation (Paleocene age). Coal, clinker, and sandstone beds comprise the aquifers in the Tongue River Member. Most streams are ephemeral and flow only as a result of precipitation. The only perennial surface-water flow in the study area is along short reaches downstream from springs. A mine plan for the area is not available; thus, the location of mine cuts, direction and rate of the mine expansion, and duration of mining are unknown. The mining of the Sawyer and Knoblock coal beds in the Tonge River Member would effect ground-water flow in the area. Declines in the potentiometric surface would be caused by dewatering where the mine pits intersect the water table. Wells and springs would be removed in the mine area; however, deeper aquifers are available as replacement sources of water. The chemical quality of the ground water would change after moving through the spoils. The change would be an increase in the concentration of dissolved solids. It shows that the Hazard Number 9 coal seam produces the largest quantities of acid and sulfate. The study also shows that most of the acid mine drainage is neutralized by carbonate minerals or is replaced by exchangeable bases from the aquifer materials before it reaches the streams. The generation of sediment is probably the most damaging effect of strip mining on water quality in the basin. The technique is a method of electromagnetic sounding of the Earth and is based upon the skin depth effect in conductive media. The electric and magnetic fields arising from natural sources are measured at the surface of the earth over broad frequency bands. An excellent review of the technique is provided in the paper by Vozoff (1972). The sources of the natural fields are found in two basic mechanisms. At frequencies above a few hertz, most of the energy arises from lightning in thunderstorm belts around the equatorial regions. This energy is propagated in a wave-guide formed by the earthionospheric cavity. Energy levels are higher at fundamental modes for this cavity, but sufficient energy exists over most of the audio range to be useful for sounding at these frequencies, in which case the technique is generally referred to as audio-magnetotellurics or AMT. At frequencies lower than audio, and in general below 1 Hz, the source of naturally occuring electromagnetic energy is found in ionospheric currents. Current systems flowing in the ionosphere generate EM waves which can be used in sounding of the earth. These fields generate a relatively complete spectrum of electromagnetic energy that extends from around 1 Hz to periods of one day. Figure 1 shows an amplitude spectrum characteristic of both the ionospheric and lightning sources, covering a frequency range from 0.0001 Hz to 1000 Hz.
