The general objectives of the project of which this work is a part are to provide an understanding of the nature, location, and extent of the engineering geology and environmental geology concerns in areas of potential coal development in the Cook Inlet region, Alaska. The lithologic, geotechnical, and geophysical data presented in this report include some of the data needed to evaluate geologic hazards, and to predict the response of geologic materials to large-scale coal mining and related development in the Chuitna West coal field of the Beluga coal resource area. Sulfate is the major anion in water associated with coal seams and in stream waters draining areas extensively disturbed by mining activities. Water found along a major linear feature in the Big Prater Creek valley and water from deep wells in Levisa Fork basin contain chloride as the predominant anion. Hydrogen ion activities (pH) in the ground water range from 5.2 to 8.4. Iron concentrations as high as 14,000 micrograms per liter are present in domestic wells. The chemical composition of most streams changes with diminishing discharge and at baseflow is similar to the composition of local ground water. Three stream-gages were identified as having insufficient reason to continue their operation. Operation of these stations were identified as having uses specific only to short-term studies; it is recommended that these stations be discontinued at the end of the data-collection phases of the studies. The remaining 45 stations should be maintained in the program for the foreseeable future. The current policy for operation of the 45-station program would require $180,300 per year. The average standard error of estimation of streamflow record is 18.5 percent. It was shown that this overall level of accuracy at the 45 sites could be maintained with a budget of \\$170,000 if the gaging resources were redistributed among the gages. A minimum budget of \\$155,000 is required to operate the 45-gage program; a budget less than this does not permit proper service and maintenance of the gages and recorders. At the minimum budget, the average standard error is 26.0 percent. The maximum budget analyzed was \\$350,000, which resulted in an average standard error of 9.2 percent. Large parts of Maine 's interior were identified as having sparse stream-flow data. It was recommended that this sparsity should be remedied as funds can be made available. The U.S. Geological Survey was requested to compile the available ground-water data, collect additional data, and assess the effects of the long-term development of ground water in the North Fort Hood area.</p>\n<p>Nearly all ground water in the North Fort Hood area is withdrawn from the Hensell and Hosston Members of the Travis Peak Formation. The total average annual rates of ground-water withdrawals, mostly for public supply, has steadily increased from nearly 0.5 million gallons per day during 1955 to mare than 1.5 million gallons per day during 1980.</p>\n<p>The principal effect of the long-term development of ground water in the area has been a large decline of water levels in wells. The water level in a well near Narth Fort Hood declined from a depth of 100 feet during 1943 to nearly 480 feet during 1982. The water level in a well at Gatesville was above ground level during 1898. A nearby well had a water level of 476 feet below land surface during 1982. The long-term average of water-level declines for wells in the area ranges from 8 to more than 9 feet per year.</p>\n<p>The historical confined (artesian) conditions of the principal aquifer have changed to water-table conditions in some areas as the artesian head 9 drops below the base of the confining layer due to pumping. The greater storage property of the unconfined system will decrease the rate of water-level declines. However, well yields will continue to decrease in relation to the general decline of hydraulic head in the aquifer.</p>\n<p>The ground water in the area is slightly saline and concentrations of some constituents generally exceed chemical-quality limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for public water supplies. Observations during drilling and initial development indicated small formation yields which would require considerable test times by conventional open-casing methods. A pressure-monitoring system was assembled for performance evaluation utilizing commercially available components. Formation pressures were monitored with a down-hole strain-gage transducer. An inflatable packer equipped with a 1/4-inch-diameter steel tube extending through the inflation element permitted sensing formation pressures in isolated test zones. Surface components of the monitoring system provided AC transducer excitation, signal conditioning for recording directly in engineering units, and both analog and digital recording. Continuous surface monitoring of formation pressures provided a means of determining test status and projecting completion times during any phase of testing. Maximum portability was afforded by battery operation with all surface components mounted in a small self-contained trailer. Geochemical arguments, including reaction mechanisms, are used to support these findings. Carbon-, hydrogen-, and oxygen-isotope data show that much of the recharge in the area occurred during late Wisconsin time. Absence of ground-water recharge prior to late Pleistocene is considered to indicate that either climatic conditions were unfavorable for recharge or that ground-water velocities were such that they transported this earlier recharge away from the study aea. The test hole was drilled in the SW 1/4 NE 1/4 sec. 32, T. 19 N., R. 1 W., Glenn County, California, about one-half mile south of the town of Butte City. Drilled to a depth of 1,432 feet below land surface, the hole is cased to a depth of 82 feet and equipped with three piezometer tubes to depths of 592 feet, 968 feet, and 1,330 feet. A 5-foot well screen is at the bottom of each piezometer. Each screened interval has a cement plug above and below it to isolate it from other parts of the aquifer , and the well bore is filled between the plugs with sediment. Nine cores and 49 sidewall cores were recovered. Laboratory tests were made for mineralogy, hydraulic conductivity, porosity , consolidation, grain-size distribution, Atterberg limits, X-ray diffraction, and chemical quality of water. Geophysical and thermal gradient logs were made. The hole is sampled periodically for chemical analysis and measured for water level in the three tapped zones. This report presents methods used to obtain field samples, laboratory procedures, and the data obtained. Surface-water discharge was determined at 11,076 stations; stage data on streams, reservoirs, and lakes were recorded at 2,136 stations; and surface-water quality was determined at 4,610 stations. Ground-water levels were measured at 35,621 stations, and the quality of ground water was determined at 7,648 stations nationwide. Information on precipitation quantity was collected at 800 stations, and quality of precipitation was analyzed at 121 stations. The atlas was begun as an effort to depict the areal distribution of surficial geologic deposits and other materials that accumulated or formed during the past 2+ million years, the period that includes all activities of the human species. These materials are at the surface of the earth. They make up the 'ground' on which we walk, the 'dirt' in which we dig foundations, and the 'soil' in which we grow crops. Most of our human activity is related in one way or another to these surface materials that are referred to collectively by many geologists as regolith, the mantle of fragmental and generally unconsolidated material that overlies the bedrock foundation of the continent. The maps were compiled at 1:1,000,000 scale.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/i1420(NK16)","usgsCitation":"Bleuer, N.K., Mickelson, D.M., Farrand, W.R., Goldthwait, R.P., and Fullerton, D.S., 1983, Quaternary geologic map of the Chicago 4 degrees x 6 degrees quadrangle, United States: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 1420(NK-16), 1 map :col. ;44 x 51 cm., on sheet 74 x 139 cm. folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/i1420(NK16).","productDescription":"1 map :col. ;44 x 51 cm., on sheet 74 x 139 cm. folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":187409,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":6074,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/i-1420/nk-16/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":100786,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/1420nk16/plate-1.pdf","size":"12692","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":106740,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_9218.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"9218"}],"scale":"1000000","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -90,40 ], [ -90,44 ], [ -84,44 ], [ -84,40 ], [ -90,40 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bff4","contributors":{"compilers":[{"text":"Lineback, Jerry A.","contributorId":61514,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lineback","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":749852,"contributorType":{"id":3,"text":"Compilers"},"rank":1}],"editors":[{"text":"Richmond, Gerald M.","contributorId":87165,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richmond","given":"Gerald M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":749851,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Bleuer, Ned K.","contributorId":14512,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bleuer","given":"Ned","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271546,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mickelson, David M.","contributorId":57544,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mickelson","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271547,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Farrand, William R.","contributorId":65542,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Farrand","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271548,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Goldthwait, Richard P.","contributorId":90392,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goldthwait","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271549,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Fullerton, David S. fullerton@usgs.gov","contributorId":448,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fullerton","given":"David","email":"fullerton@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":271545,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

In support of these investigations, the thickness of the lava sequence at more than 300 points was estimated by spectral analysis of low-level aeromagnetic profiles utilizing the integral Fourier transform of field intensity along overlapping profile segments. The optimum length of segment for analysis was determined to be about 40 km or 600 field samples. Contributions from two discrete magnetic source ensembles could be resolved on almost all spectra computed. The depths to these ensembles correspond closely to the flight height (300 m), and, presumably, to the mean depth to basement near the center of each profile segment. The latter association was confirmed in all three cases where spectral estimates could be directly compared with basement depths measured in drill holes. \r\n\r\nThe maximum thickness estimated for the lava section is 380 m and the mean about 150 m. Data from an isopach map prepared from these results suggest that thickness variations are strongly influenced by pre-harrat, north-northwest-trending topography probably consequent on Cenozoic faulting. The thickest zones show a rough correlation with three axially-disposed volcanic shields.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83640","usgsCitation":"Blank, H.R., and Sadek, H.S., 1983, Spectral analysis of the 1976 aeromagnetic survey of Harrat Rahat, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-640, 32 p., 2 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83640.","productDescription":"32 p., 2 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140734,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35500,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35501,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35502,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4c62","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blank, H. Emphasis is given to the Cape Fear River at Lock 1 near Kelly, where data are most complete. Other data included in the report were collected from the Cape Fear River at Lillington, the Haw River near the Jordan Dam, and the Deep River at Moncure. \r\n\r\nAvailable data indicate that concentrations of dissolved oxygen at study sites are almost always within U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criteria; however, on two sampling dates, the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the Cape Fear at Lock 1 fell slightly below the 5.0 mg/L recommended for fish populations. Measurements of pH from all stations were frequently below the lower limit of 6.5 pH units recommended for protection of freshwater aquatic life. \r\n\r\nMajor dissolved ions detected are sodium and bicarbonate. Sodium concentration averages 8.6 mg/L and bicarbonate averages 17.5 mg/L at Lock 1. Concentrations of dissolved substances and suspended sediment decrease in the downstream direction, presumably because the more heavily populated part of the basin is near the headwaters of the system. \r\n\r\nHeavy metals, with the exceptions of cadmium and mercury, rarely exceed Environmental Protection Agency criteria for the protection of aquatic life. Concentrations of mercury in the Haw River, which exceed the recommended 0.20 mg/L needed to protect aquatic life, have frequently been reported by other authors. Several of the most toxic metals, arsenic, cadmium, and cobalt, are about five times more concentrated in water from the Haw River site than from other study sites in the basin. Iron and manganese frequently exceed North Carolina water-quality standards. \r\n\r\nAvailable nitrogen averages 1.21 mg/L and available phosphorus averages 0.21 mg/L at Lock 1. Nuisance algal growths have not been identified as a problem in the river. \r\n\r\nComparisons of water-quality data for baseline (natural) and present conditions indicate that more than 50 percent of most dissolved substances and over 80 percent of certain forms of nitrogen and phosph6rus result from development.\r\n\r\nOver the past 25 years, increases in concentrations of specific conductance, dissolved magnesium, dissolved sodium, dissolved potassium, dissolved sulfate, dissolved solids, and total nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen were detected in the Cape Fear River at Lock 1. Values for pH and dissolved silica are decreasing. Concentrations of most dissolved constituents at Lock 1 are increasing. These increases are statistically related to increases in population and manufacturing employment in the basin but are unrelated to agricultural activity.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83526","usgsCitation":"Crawford, J.K., 1983, Water-quality characteristics for selected sites on the Cape Fear River, North Carolina, 1955-80: Variability, loads, and trends of selected constituents: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-526, vi, 66 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83526.","productDescription":"vi, 66 p.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":140544,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0526/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36023,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0526/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":410128,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14090.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","otherGeospatial":"Cape Fear River","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -77.904052734375,\n 33.75174787568194\n ],\n [\n -77.8546142578125,\n 33.988918483762156\n ],\n [\n -77.7996826171875,\n 34.17090836352573\n ],\n [\n -77.53051757812499,\n 34.384246040152185\n ],\n [\n -77.464599609375,\n 34.43409789359469\n ],\n [\n -77.882080078125,\n 35.02099970111467\n ],\n [\n -78.20068359374999,\n 35.133386854253075\n ],\n [\n -78.519287109375,\n 35.209721645221386\n ],\n [\n -78.7335205078125,\n 35.51881428123057\n ],\n [\n -78.83239746093749,\n 35.82226734114509\n ],\n [\n -78.88732910156249,\n 36.01800375871416\n ],\n [\n -79.4366455078125,\n 36.146746777814364\n ],\n [\n -80.03814697265625,\n 36.02189133007692\n ],\n [\n -80.0628662109375,\n 35.957443980673595\n ],\n [\n -80.06904602050781,\n 35.78941187118459\n ],\n [\n -79.815673828125,\n 35.382332329032984\n ],\n [\n -79.5684814453125,\n 35.22991591449646\n ],\n [\n -79.46685791015625,\n 35.074964853989556\n ],\n [\n -79.22515869140625,\n 34.9895035675793\n ],\n [\n -78.88732910156249,\n 34.77545980961412\n ],\n [\n -78.78021240234375,\n 34.70549341022544\n ],\n [\n -78.42041015625,\n 34.31621838080741\n ],\n [\n -78.22265625,\n 33.988918483762156\n ],\n [\n -77.904052734375,\n 33.75174787568194\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d552","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Crawford, J.
