Minimum, median, and maximum concentrations and percentage of samples above the ' maximum contaminant levels ' established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are presented for all wells in the statewide network. More detailed areal statistical summaries are presented for all wells in the statewide network. More detailed areal statistical summaries are presented for nine chemical constituents for which more than 3% of the observed concentrations exceeded the ' maximum contaminate level ' for that constituent. The State was divided into 14 ground-water regions based on water-use and physiographic characteristics. Summaries for these nine constituents include quartile values and percentage of samples with concentrations above the ' maximum contaminant level ' for each ground-water region. Accompanying figures show median concentrations and percentages of concentrations exceeding the ' maximum contaminant levels ' established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for each ground-water region. The analytical values for lead, zinc, selenium, and cadmium in ash of tree branches are significantly higher in samples from areas of known mineralization (13 sites) than in samples from areas of no known mineralization (12 sites). Geometric mean concentrations of these elements in the two areas (mineralized; nonmineralized), quoted as parts per million in ash, are lead (122; 28), zinc (713; 443), selenium (1.2; 0.6), and cadmium (1.4; 0.5). \r\n\r\nThe range of molybdenum values in ash from the two areas is similar, but a cluster of four sites in an area classified as nonmineralized corresponds to an area where the U.S. Geological Survey reported anomalous molybdenum values in rock in 1965. Results for other elements were either equivocal (mercury, tellurium, silver) or showed no correspondence to the two areas. Mean values for barium, manganese, potassium, and sodium are significantly higher in areas of no known mineralization, but we conclude that this reflects a difference in country rock major-element chemistry rather than the effect of ore-forming processes. \r\n\r\nThe pattern of trace-metal values in Acacia ash is present whether the sampled tree grows on bedrock, on talus, or on residual or modern alluvium. The stockwork is built of countless quartz veins and veinlets, extensively argillized and containing sparsely disseminated gold, pyrite, arsenoDyrite, Dyrrhotite, fluorite, and other minerals. The stockwork developed along the outer ring-fracture zone of the Eocene Quartz Creek cauldron where subsidence strain, unrelieved by radial faulting, produced internal deformation and intense small-scale fracturing in rocks of the Idaho batholith. The stockwork, cropping out as a fault-bounded polygon 2,700 ft long and 2,000 ft wide, contains (underlies?) a large, virtually barren quartz body 1,350 ft long and 350 ft wide. Deformed, shattered granite flanks and presumably underlies the stockwork, which may plunge southward beneath inclusion-bearing granodiorite and alaskite of the Idaho batholith suite. Narrow dikes of rhyolite and latite radiate from two centers within the quartz body. Many dikes and small bosses of rhyolite and latite intrude stockwork and granite. The radial habit of some dikes and the high frequency of small intrusives concentrated within the sericite and kaolinite alteration zones suggest that a Tertiary porphyry is concealed beneath the mountain. Clay-mineral alteration zones mapped in residual soil extend far outward from the stockwork. Valleys filled with Quaternary deposits bound the stockwork-granite complex on the east, north, and west, effectively concealing elements of a crudely elliptical substructure that differs from the fault-dissected, mappable part of the complex. \r\n\r\nMetal anomalies in soil of the 3,600-ft x 8,400-ft gridded area are mostly weak and small. In contrast, metal anomalies in plants are strong, large, and consistent with the inference of a concealed elliptical substructure that may be hoodlike and may contain more than one mineralized zone. Gold in ashed sapwood of douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) indicates a major gold anomaly, peak value 14.2 ppm Au, on inclusion-bearing granodiorite in an unprospected area south of the exposed stockwork. Locally, the gold anomaly is accompanied by a sizable tin anomaly, peak value 100 ppm Sn, in douglas-fir. Molybdenum in ashed leaves of beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax), peak value >500 ppm Mo, indicates extensive anomalies within a 2-milelong semi-elliptical belt of Mo values exceeding the 20 ppm median. Most of the belt is on valley fill, but the southern segment of it, near the major gold anomaly, is mainly on inclusion-bearing granodiorite. Here, where beargrass is sparse, the peak value of Mo in beargrass drops to 70 ppm. Where beargrass is absent, ashed leaves of sedge (Carex geyeri) have anomalous values of 100 ppm Mo. An additional target for molybdenum is indicated by molybdenite from the inaccessible Dart of the main adit. The molybdenite, seen only in dump specimens, is in weakly silicified granite that may underlie part of the stockwork. The source body of the molybdenite is blind, and no clue to it is given by samples of soil or plants. Just north of the major gold anomaly, 2 ppm values of W in beargrass coincide approximately with a tungsten anomaly in soil (peak value 22 ppm W) in an area of float containing disseminated scheelite in weakly silicified inclusion-bearing granodiorite. Other areas of 2 ppm W values in beargrass are nearly coextensive with the Moin-beargrass anomalies on Quaternary deposits of Quartz Creek valley. The goal of these investigations has been to discover the cause of the large intraplate Charleston earthquake of 1886, which dominates the record of seismicity in the Southeastern United States, through an understanding of the historic and modern seismicity at Charleston and of the tectonic setting of the seismicity. This goal is being pursued to evaluate the potential for additional large earthquakes in the Charleston area and surrounding regions and to determine whether the Charleston area differs tectonically in any significant fashion from other parts of the Southeastern United States. An understanding of the specific cause for the 1886 event and of the regional distribution of any structures that are generically related to or geometrically and mechanically similar to the source structure is essential for evaluation of seismic hazards throughout the Southeast.</p><p>The results given herein represent significant progress toward understanding the tectonic setting of the Charleston-area seismicity. Several chapters in the volume address the distribution and origin of pre-Cretaceous rocks and structures beneath Coastal Plain sediments in the Charleston area and regionally beneath the southern Atlantic Coastal Plain and adjacent Continental Shelf. The modern seismicity at Charleston is occurring at depths equal to or greater than the known extent of these older structures, and rejuvenation of an older fault in the modern stress field is a possible cause of the seismicity. Accordingly, several chapters discuss the possible relationships of the various pre-Cretaceous structures to faults identified near Charleston that have a known Cretaceous and Cenozoic movement history and to the historic and instrumentally recorded seismicity. However, at the present time, none of the young structures can be related unequivocally to the seismicity because earthquake fault-plane solutions and hypocenter distributions do not agree with the locations and orientations of these structures. These studies are now in progress in Austin and Houston. Studies were completed in the Fort Worth metropolitan area at the end of the 1977 water year, and in the Dallas metropolitan area at the end of the 1979 water year. The study in the San Antonio area was completed at the end of the 1981 water year.</p><p>The Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources, expanded the existing streamflow network in the San Antonio metropolitan area in May 1968 to begin urban hydrology studies in this area. In September 1968, the program was further expanded to include the collection of water-quality data. The Texas Department of Water Resources ended its participation in the project in 1979, and the city of San Antonio funded the program through the 1981 water year.</p><p>The operation and maintenance of stations 08178000, San Antonio River at San Antonio; 08178700, Salado Creek (upper station) at San Antonio; and 08178800, Salado Creek (lower station) at San Antonio are funded by the city of San Antonio and the U.S Geological Survey.</p><p>The operation and maintenance and collection of water-quality data at station 08178720, Lorence Creek at Thousand Oaks Blvd., San Antonio, station 08178640, West Elm Creek at San Antonio, and station 08178645, East Elm Creek at San Antonio, are funded by the Edwards Underground Water District in cooperation with the Texas Department of Hater Resources and the U.S. Geological Survey. Station 08178640, West Elm Creek at San Antonio, and station 08178645, East Elm Creek at San Antonio will provide hydrologic data on similar and adjacent watersheds. The West Elm watershed is still predominately rural but is undergoing extensive urbanization in some areas. Summary descriptions of individual lode gold deposits and districts which include those occurrences in the&nbsp;Medford&nbsp;1<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;x 2<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;quadrangle have been published by Brooks and Ramp (1968) and Hotz (1971) and by others cited in the reference lists in these two publications. As part of the Medford CUSMAP project between 1974 and 1980, some of these deposits were examined in the field during geologic mapping and geochemical sampling and most of the available information on individual deposits was compiled into a CRIB computer file (Computerized Resource Information Bank). This report is a summary of the more pertinent geologic and economic characteristics of the lode gold deposits for use in the resource evaluation part of the Medford CUSMAP project.
