Accordingly, each of the four time series were first analyzed independently in the univariate mode of a spectral analysis. The two basic data sets were then analyzed in a paired cross-spectral analysis. \r\n\r\nThe prominent periodic cycles remaining in the data sets after linear trend removal, were: sea level surface from seismic stratigraphy--9.6 million years, updated version of sea level surface from seismic stratigraphy--9.5 million years, continental paleotemperatures from paleobotanical interpretations--9.6 million years, and marine paleotemperatures from foraminiferal isotopic data--12.7 million years. The cross-correlation properties between the data sets of continental paleotemperatures from paleobotanical interpretations and sea level surface from seismic stratigraphy at the common prominent period of 9.6 million years were: (1) The squared coherency value which measures cross correlation between the two data sets has the value 0.30, and (2) the amount by which the continental paleotemperatures from paleobotanical interpretations data lags the sea level surface from seismic stratigraphy data is 2.70 million years.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr83566","usgsCitation":"Rosenfield, G.H., and Huffman, T.E., 1983, Time series analysis of Cenozoic era sea level and paleotemperature data: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-566, iv, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83566.","productDescription":"iv, 42 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":142435,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0566/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38684,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0566/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62b6ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rosenfield, George H.","contributorId":103282,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rosenfield","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162206,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Huffman, Tod E.","contributorId":14823,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Huffman","given":"Tod","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162205,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Water-quality data were collected from March 1977 through September 1978 at six lake stations and four lake tributary stations. Data collected during and after the drought were compared. Lake water quality is described as a function of lake morphometry, climate, hydrology, and reservoir hydraulics. Results indicate Shasta Lake is a warm monomictic lake. Tributary inflow to the lake and outflow through the dam generate density currents which promote mixing at depth and the development of an extensive metalimnion. During the drought, record low lake levels resulted in the exposure of an extensive nearshore sediment zone. Resuspended sediments caused a deterioration of water quality. The most notable effects, in comparison with post-drought conditions, were decreased light penetration, increased dissolved-solids concentration and specific conductance, decreased dissolved-oxygen concentrations, and elevated nutrient levels. A hypolimnetic anoxic condition was observed at the upstream stations of the lake. The watershed was underlain by stratified sedimentary rocks containing three aquifers. The top and middle aquifers were perched above clay beds that underlay the major coal seams; the lowermost aquifer is part of a regional aquifer system and neither water levels nor water quality have been affected by mining. Replacement of the top aquifer by spoils during mining has caused many changes in the land surface, recharge rates, discharge rates, saturated thickness, water-table gradient, hydraulic conductivity, storage, and water quality. Changes in the middle aquifer include: the amount of recharge from precipitation, amount of leakage through the overlying clay bed, and water quality in some areas. Resaturation of the mining spoils during postmining has been slow and irregular, however, water levels in wells in the middle aquifer have remained virtually unchanged. The water quality in the mining spoils is significantly poorer than water in the original aquifer. Specific conductance concentration of water in the spoils is 2 ,020 micromhos per centimeter and sulfate is 940 milligrams per liter. Water levels and water quality in the deep aquifer have not been affected by mining. High-grade ore samples also contain diagenetic clausthalite. Microprobe and SEM/EDS study indicate high U concentrations along the contacts of organic matter and surrounding detrital grains. Three drill holes placed to test anomalies within these formations yielded negative results. \r\n\r\nStudies of a long, narrow anomaly north of the Rabathan area indicated a similar geological environment. This northern area also contains limited zones that are highly anomalous in copper and zinc and extensive zones that are slightly anomalous in those metals. Drilling was not undertaken in this area. \r\n\r\nThe Bilajimah airborne electromagnetic anomaly west of Wadi Bidah coincides with a broad synclinorium of layered felsic turfs and gossans. Geochemical studies indicated slightly anomalous copper, zinc, and silver values in gossans within the anomaly area. Two drill holes intersected carbonaceous rock that contained approximately 15 percent pyrrhotite and traces of sphalerite and chalcopyrite. \r\n\r\nTwo geophysically anomalous areas west of Wadi Bidah surround ancient mines at Mahawiyah and Khayal al Masna'ah. Results of geochemical sampling at these workings were positive. An airborne electromagnetic anomaly located in the Assifar area in the southwestern corner of the Wadi Bidah district is underlain principally by metasedimentary rocks that include large linear zones of cherty iron-manganese formation and a few gossans .containing secondary base metal minerals.\r\n\r\nDetailed mapping and sampling of the Mulhal ancient mine, located west of Wadi Bidah, revealed two types of polymetallic gossans : (1) stratiform deposits interlayered with ignimbrites and mafic volcanic rocks and (2) barite-bearing gossanous material in shear zones that grade into hydrothermally altered shear zones and extend beyond the mine area. The gossans and gossanous shear zones contain anomalous amounts of gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc, barium, and selenium. \r\n\r\nTwo gossans west of Wadi Bidah were mapped and sampled in detail; both gossans are interlayered, with siliceous volcanic rocks. Although the gossan at Jabal Mohr covers a large area, it contains low amounts of precious and base metals. The gossan at Mulhal No. 2 contains moderate to high amounts of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83672","usgsCitation":"Smith, C.W., Waters, B., Naqvi, M., Worl, R.G., Helaby, A., Flanigan, V.J., Sadek, H., and Samater, R., 1983, Geological and geochemical studies in the Wadi Bidah District, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-672, v, 101 p., 6 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;1983., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83672.","productDescription":"v, 101 p., 6 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;1983.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142103,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34537,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34538,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34532,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34533,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34534,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34535,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34536,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adee4b07f02db6876b4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, C. Comparison of the Smith Lake data with information from other primary deposits in the Grants uranium region and elsewhere in the Morrison Formation of the Colorado Plateau suggests that these elements, with the possible exceptions of zirconium and gallium and with the probable addition of aluminum and magnesium, are typically associated with primary, tabular uranium deposits. Chemical differences between the Ruby and Mariano Lake deposits are consistent with the interpretation that the Ruby deposit has been more affected by post-mineralization oxidizing solutions than has the Mariano Lake deposit.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83818","usgsCitation":"Pierson, C.T., Spirakis, C., and Robertson, J., 1983, Comparison of abundances of chemical elements in mineralized and unmineralized sandstone of the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation, Smith Lake District, Grants uranium region, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-818, 47 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83818.","productDescription":"47 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153322,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0818/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50002,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0818/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d489","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pierson, C. This economy is supported by imported surface water and 9 to 15 million acre-feet per year of ground water. Estimates of ground-water pumpage computed from power consumption have been compiled and summarized. Under ideal conditions, the accuracy of the methods used is about 3 percent. This level of accuracy is not sustained over the entire study area. When pumpage for the entire area is mapped, the estimates seem to be consistent areally and through time. A multiple linear-regression model was used to synthesize data for the years 1961 through 1977, when power data were not available. The model used a relation between ground-water pumpage and climatic indexes to develop a full suite of pumpage data to be used as input to a digital ground-water model, one of the products of the Central Valley Aquifer Project. Statistical analysis of well-perforation data from drillers ' logs and water-temperature data was used to determine the percentage of pumpage that was withdrawn from each of two horizontal layers. Transient-decay voltages in profile mode were measured across the Sha'ab at \r\nTare and Rabathan prospects by use of three transmitterreceiver loop configurations. At the Sha'ab at Tare prospect all of the loop configurations indicated the mineralized \r\nzone. Analysis of the coincident loop data at Sha'ab at Tare reveals that gossanous and altered rock of i0 ohm-m resistivity extends to a depth of 35 m, where there is an unweathered, dry mineralized zone of about 1 ohm-m resistivity. The model further suggests that the rocks at a depth of 55 m and below the water table are even less resistive (0. 1 ohm-m). The TDEM method successfully discriminated conductors within from those below the weathered zone at the Rabathan prospect. Conductors below the weathered zone are identified by a lack of transient response in the early part of the transient decay curve, followed by an increasing response in the middle to late parts of the transient decay curve. Results of these limited tests suggest the potential value of integrating TDEM with other geophysical tools in the Kingdom. Recommendations are made to expand these tests into a more comprehensive program that will evaluate the TDEM potential in various geologic environments that are host to mineral deposits of diverse origin.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83613","usgsCitation":"Flanigan, V.J., Sadek, H., Smith, B., and Tippens, C.L., 1983, Time-domain electromagnetic tests in the Wadi Bidah District, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-613, ii, 27 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83613.","productDescription":"ii, 27 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140730,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0613/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35040,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0613/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62b578","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Flanigan, Vincent J.","contributorId":37735,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Flanigan","given":"Vincent","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156208,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sadek, Hamdy","contributorId":97491,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sadek","given":"Hamdy","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156210,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Smith, Bruce 0000-0002-1643-2997","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1643-2997","contributorId":43350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Bruce","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156209,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Tippens, C. Annual sediment loads can be computed using these relations. For a site at Fairbanks, the annual loads in 1980 were 22.0 million metric tons of suspended sediment and 272,000 metric tons of bedload; in 1981, 27.3 million metric tons of suspended sediment and 333,000 metric tons of bedload passed the Fairbanks site. Data collected at five other locations within a 40 km reach of the river indicate very similar suspended-sediment transport relations, but bedload-transport relations vary from site to site and between 1980 and 1981. For all sites bedload is usually 1 to 1.5 percent of suspended-sediment load. Particle-size distribution for suspended sediment is similar at all six sites. Median particle size is generally in the silt range; only occasionally is it in the very fine sand range. Median particle size of bedload varied from the gravel range to the medium sand range for five of the six sampling sites in both years. At the sixth site, the most downstream location, median particle size of bedload was in the sand range. The area varies in altitude from less than 4,000 to more than 10,000 feet, and is comprised chiefly of plateaus, benches, and terraces that are dissected by deep, narrow canyons. Principal streams draining the area are the Virgin, Sevier, Escalante, and Paria Rivers, and Coal, Kanab, and Wahweap Creeks.

Most of the data included in this report were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey from October 1980 to September 1982. They were collected as part of a hydrologic study in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to evaluate potential impacts of coal mining on the area's water resources. The results of that study are to be published in a separate report.

Several earlier coal-related hydrologic studies have been made in the Alton and Kolob coal-fields area. Hydrologic data collected during those studies may be found in the following reports: Goode (1964, 1966), Sandberg (1979), and Cordova (1981).
