There are minor editorial changes, plus the following additions and modifications: \r\n\r\n(I) The representation of latitude and longitude using radian measure was added. \r\n\r\n(2) Alternate 2 for Representation of Hemispheric Information was deleted. \r\n\r\n(3) Use of the maximum precision for all numerical values was emphasized. Most of the known hydrothermal systems in southern Idaho have calculated reservoir temperatures of less than 150?C. Water from many of these systems is valuable for direct heat applications, but is lower than the temperature of interest for commercial generation of electricity at the present time. Most of the known and inferred geothermal resources of southern Idaho underlie the Snake River Plain. However, major uncertainties exist concerning the geology and temperatures beneath the plain. By far the largest hydrothermal system in Idaho is in the Bruneau-Grand View area of the western Snake River Plain with a calculated reservoir temperature of 107?C and an energy of 4.5? 10 20 joules. No evidence of higher temperature water associated with this system has been found. Although the geology of the eastern Snake River Plain suggests that a large thermal anomaly may underlie this area of the plain, direct evidence of high temperatures has not been found. Large volumes of water at temperatures between 90? and 150?C probably exist along the margins of the Snake River Plain and in local areas north and south of the plain. Recharge occurs largely from local precipitation, although small quantities of potable ground water from outside areas also recharge these aquifers. Water levels in the Pajaro and Salinas River valleys north and south of the study area are lower than most of the intervening area, and recharge from the east is blocked by faults and impervious rock. Ocean water moves in from the west to replace depleted freshwater storage in the upper part of the Aromas Sand, alluvium, and terrace deposits. The North County area was divided into subareas to estimate pumpage demands and to evaluate ground-water yields. Pumpage near the granitic ridge, an area of limited storage, nearly matches local recharge. West of the granitic ridge, pumpage exceeds available recharge but draws upon a large storage potential. Deeper units than those now tapped by wells in the Aromas Sand and the underlying Purisima Formation may have substantial water-bearing potential for additional ground-water development. Extensive development of water from these formations might be limited, however, by the remoteness of the recharge source and by the proximity to the ocean. Hydrogeologic units underlying the 350-square-mile bay include the surficial-sand aquifer, upper sand and clay confining bed, and limestone of the Floridan aquifer. The surficial aquifer and upper confining bed have been eroded away in several areas along the northern coast of the bay to directly expose the Floridan aquifer to saltwater. There also, the top of the aquifer is, has been, or will be exposed to saltwater in numerous channels dredged in the bay. Saltwater-freshwater relations indicate that the degree of bay-aquifer interconnection decreases from north to south. Saltwater intrusion is occurring along the coast of Tampa Bay, as indicated by reduction or reversal of potentiometric-surface gradients and increasing chloride concentrations in coastal monitoring wells. A computer model of ground-water flow developed for a 97-square-mile area was interrogated under five options of channelization and pumping. Model results indicate that the total impact of channelization upon bay-aquifer interconnection are expected to be small and may be imperceptible when considered over the long term with other unknown changes in climate and development. Hydrologic investigations of urban watersheds in Texas were begun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1954. Studies are now in progress in Austin, and Houston. Studies have been completed in the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the city of Houston, began studies in the Houston metropolitan area in 1964. The program was expanded in 1968 to include collection of water-quality data. The objectives of the Houston urban-hydrology study are as follows:

  1. To determine, on the basis of historical data and hydro!ogic analyses, the magnitude and frequency of flood peaks and flood volumes.
    2. \n
  2. To determine the effect of urban development on flood peaks and volumes.
    3. \n
  3. To ascertain the variation in water quality for different flow conditions and different seasons.
    4. \n

This report, the seventeenth in a series of reports to be published annually, is primarily applicable to objective 2. The report presents hydrologic data collected in the Houston urban area for the 1980 water year (October 1, 1979 to September 30, 1980).

Ground-water quality data, as well as data on construction, yield, water levels, and other physical well parameters collected prior to 1981 are available from the U.S. Geological Survey, Oklahoma District Office.\r\nAlthough water-quality data for wells, test holes, and springs have been published, they are scattered though a variety of reports and are not readily available on a statewide basis. The purpose of this report is to make available, annually, all of the ground-water quality data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in the Sate of Oklahoma. The northern quarter is covered by Cambrian Siq Sandstone and the southeastern corner is covered by Quaternary to Tertiary basalt. The remainder of the area is underlain by trachyandesite, andesite, and metasedimentary rocks of the lower part of the Hulayfah group and \r\nrhyolitic flows and ruffs of the upper part of the Hulayfah group. These rocks have been intruded by rocks that range in composition from gabbro to alkali-feldspar granite. Two small outcrops of Tertiary rhyolite are present in the quadrangle. \r\n\r\nThe predominant structures are folds and faults initiated by the formation of the caldera in the southwestern part of the area. Results indicate that deposits at 21?N and Juan de Fuca are very similar despite a geographic separation of 2300 km and are composed primarily of Zn, Fe, and S, with important minor concentrations of Ag, As, Cd and Ge. The Galapagos Rift massive sulfide is primarily Fe, Cu and S and with important minor contents of only Co and Mo. Au is low, ranging from below detection up to 0.17 ppm. Pt group metals are very low, and average about 0.001 ppm. Consideration of enrichment factors and relative metal abundance suggests that MORB is a sufficient source for all the metals enriched in the sea floor deposits. \r\n\r\nThe economically important metals for the 21?N and Juan de Fuca deposits are primarily Zn and Ag, (97%) with potential by-products of Cu, Cd and possibly, Ge. For the Galapagos Rift, the primary value is with Cu (86%) with potential by-products of Co and Mo. The Galapagos Rift deposit is similar to, but contains about twice the Cu content, of typical ore from the Skouriotisa mine of the Troodos complex of Cyprus. Between May and December 1980 data were collected as far south as the Coos River in Western Oregon, as far north as Baker Bay in Southwestern Washington and as far inland as Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. In an elutriation test, bottom material from a dredging site is mixed with native water and the filtrate is analysed. Elutriation test results showed variability in concentrates of dissolved chemicals as follows: in micrograms per liter (micro g/l), manganese ranged from 0 to 10,000, iron from 10 to 4300, zinc from 1 to 90, and phenols from 9 to 420; in milligrams per liter (mg/l), ammonia as nitrogen ranged from 0.03 to 46 and organic carbon from 0.5 to 45.
