These sea bed micro-features are regionally widespread but are not uniformly distributed. Furthermore, the microrelief, texture, and lithologic structure of sea bed sediments have been significantly modified by the disruptive processes associated with ice gouge formation. \r\n\r\nAn analysis of some 10,.200 individual gouges shows that the density of ice gouges increases with increasing latitude, increasing slope gradients, and decreasing water depth. Across the northern half of the shelf few trackline segments are free of ice gouges; in the southern portion numerous segments contain no ice gouges. However, ice gouges extend at least as far south as Cape Prince of Wales Shoal. Densities of over 200 gouges per km of trackline are not uncommon in water depths less than 30 m ,but no values higher than 50 km are encountered in water deeper than 50 m. No ice gouges have been observed in water depths exceeding 58 m. Saturation ice gouge densities (greater than 300/Pan) occur along the eastern side 6f Barrow Sea Valley and the northeast flank of Hanna Shoal. \r\n\r\nMaximum gouge incision depths per km of trackline are greatest in water 36 to 50 m deep . A maximum incision depth of 4.5 m occurs in the 35-40 m water depth interval. Individual ice gouge events wider than 100 m, most produced by multi-keeled ice fragments, are found between 31 and 45 m depths. The dominant azimuth of gouge furrows shows no preferred orientation on the Chukchi Sea shelf; only locally does bathmetric control of the trend of gouges appear. \r\n\r\nThe occurrence of current-produced bedforms within individual ice gouges suggests an interaction between slow-moving grounded or gouging ice keels and swift currents. The water supply for the city of Madison, Wisconsin, and for surrounding municipalities is obtained from the ground-water reservoir that underlies the area. This ground-water reservoir is composed of an upper aquifer and an underlying sandstone aquifer. High-capacity water-supply wells pump from the sandstone aquifer.

\n

Pumping from the sandstone aquifer has resulted in hydrologic changes. The water level has dropped in both the upper aquifer and underlying sandstone aquifer, and the flow of water in streams has been reduced.

\n

The effects of anticipated pumping were examined with the use of a digital model. The maximum water-level decline from the beginning of pumping in 1882 until 1975 was about 75 feet in the sandstone aquifer and 10 to 20 feet in the upper aquifer. Additional declines between 1975 and 2000 were computed to be 10 to 30 feet in the sandstone aquifer and 5 to 10 feet in the upper aquifer. The average annual streamflow of the Yahara River at the McFarland gaging station was reduced 32 percent from the beginning of pumping to 1975. An additional 7 percent reduction in streamflow was computed for the period 1975 to 2000.

Fourteen drainage basins above Fishtrap and Dewey Lakes in the Levisa Fork and Johns Creek drainage basins of eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia were studied to determine sedimentation rates and origin of sediment entering the two lakes. The basins ranged in size from 1.68 to 297 square miles. Sediment yields ranged from 2,890 to 21,000 tons per square mile where surface-mining techniques predominated, and from 732 to 3 ,470 tons per square mile where underground mining methods predominated. Yields, in terms of tons per acre-foot of runoff, ranged from 2.2 to 15 for surface-mined areas, and from 0.5 to 2.7 for underground-mined areas. Water and sediment discharges from direct runoff during storms were compared for selected surface-mined and underground-mined areas. Data points of two extensively surface-mined areas, one from the current project and one from a previous project in Beaver Creek basin, McCreary County, Kentucky, grouped similarly in magnitude and by season. Disturbed areas from mining activities determined from aerial photographs reached 17 percent in one study area where extensive surface mining was being practiced. For most areas where underground mining was practiced, percentage disturbed area was almost negligible. Trap efficiency of Fishtrap Lake was 89 percent, and was 62 percent for Dewey Lake. Average annual deposition rates were 464 and 146 acre-feet for Fishtrap and Dewey Lakes, respectively. The chemical quality of water in the Levisa Fork basin has been altered by man 's activities.

Four moderate earthquakes (M = 3.6 to 3.8) have occurred on the San Andreas fault in central California since October, 1977. These earthquakes are the first since 1974 to occur at this magnitude level within the array of tilt, strain, and magnetic instruments between Chalome (35.726N, 12.249 W) and San Francisco (37.79N, 122.23W) shown in Figure 1. They offer, therefore, one of the few opportunities to search for indications of precursive ground deformation. Furthermore, several other geophysical parameters such as resistivity, creek, radon, seismicity, geodetic strain, etc, are also monitored and allow comparisons for some of these events. This note reports comparative data and some possible implications in continuous strain, tilt, magnetic field and other measurements obtained from instruments within 10 km of the epicenters.

Water-level measurements were made in more than 600 wells in January 1978 in the northern High Plains of Colorado. Changes in water levels from January 1977 to January 1978 ranged from a rise of about 22 feet in Phillips County to a decline of about 14 feet in Yuma County. Measurements for January 1978 and the four preceding winters are given in a table.

The northern section of the Imperial Valley region in southern California is an area of known geothermal resources and an area of high seismicity. To study in detail the relationship between geothermal areas and earthquakes, the U.S. Geological Survey has been monitoring seismicity in the Imperial Valley with a 16-station network sines 1973. Six new stations were added to the network in November 1976. This catalog contains a description of the network and a list of preliminary data on earthquakes recorded by the network from January 1978 through March 1978.

The Tampa Reservoir Dam, constructed in 1945 on the lower Hillsborough River 10 miles above the mouth, provides 12.5 miles of natural channel storage for city water supply. Flow of the lower Hillsborough River and storage in Tampa Reservoir become deficient during annual dry periods. Excluding dead storage, Tampa Reservoir capacity is 2,000 million gallons at a maximum stage of 22.5 feet above mean sea level. For 20-year, annual-minimum-flow conditions, Hillsborough River flow is exceeded when the draft rate reaches 38 million gallons per day. In any year, at full capacity, Tampa Reservoir and Hillsborough River have a 5-percent chance of failing to supply at least 66 million gallons of water per day; and a 2-percent chance of failing to supply at least 59 million gallons per day.

Runoff and effluent from agricultural, industrial, and urban areas enter the stream system above Tampa Reservoir. A wide range of chemical constituents, including nutrients, metals, herbicides, and pesticides analyzed in samples taken at the reservoir, are all below the maximum acceptable limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for raw waters used for public supply. Water color exceeds the recommended level based on aesthetic considerations. The color is successfully removed through the treatment process at the Tampa water treatment plant.

Samples of surface water were collected and analyzed by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and its predecessor, the Stream Pollution Control Bureau of the Illinois Department of Public Health. The results for the period 1958 to 1974 are presented in tabular form and the history of sampling and analytical methods are summarized. Stream discharge data from records of the U.S. Geological Survey are included for all sites where samples were collected at gaging stations or near enough that reliable discharge estimates could be made. The report is contained in three volumes. This volume (Volume I) includes Des Plaines River basin and Lake Michigan. (See also W78-10035 and W78-10036).
