An evaluation was made of the potential for potable-water supplies at 13 sites in or near Redwood National Park, Calif. The National Park Service is planning for the development of visitor facilities at these sites. At some sites, the report recommends using surface-water diversions. At other sites, locations are given for test-well drilling or springs are recommended for development. Chemical analyses of water are given for selected surface-water supplies and for some existing wells and springs. The chemical quality of the water is suitable at most of the sites, although concentrations of iron and chloride are excessively high in some areas.

Given upstream and downstream boundary conditions and channel geometry data, roughness coefficients, stage, and discharge can be calculated anywhere within the reach as a function of time.
The program uses a linear implicit finite-difference technique that discritizes the partial differential equations. Then it arranges the coefficients of the continuity and momentum equations into a. pentadiagonal matrix for solution. Because it is a reasonable compromise between computational accuracy, speed and ease of use, the technique is one of the most commonly used.
The upstream boundary condition is a depth hydrograph. However, options also allow the boundary condition to be discharge or water-surface elevation. The downstream boundary condition is a depth which may be constant, self-setting, or unsteady. The reach may be divided into uneven increments and the cross sections may be nonprismatic and may vary from one to the other. Tributary and lateral inflow may enter the reach.
The digital model will simulate such common problems as (1) flood waves, (2) releases from dams, and (3) channels where storage is a consideration. It may also supply the needed flow information for mass-transport simulation.

The major problems were determined to be: program justification, effective utilization of existing institutions, the individuality of State needs, the length of time over which benefits would accrue to such programs, the roles and interactions of different levels of government, an acceptable measure for program success, public involvement in program development, information and data handling problems, and program priorities.
The role of the Federal Government was thought to be a critical factor in developing such programs, especially in the western States where Federal land ownership may subordinate State planning efforts.
Priorities in Critical Environmental Areas Programs were seen to be closely tied to concern for preservation of ways-of-life, a concern which broadens the Critical Environmental Areas concept from mainly environmental to societal in scope.
The utility of the workshop format as a means of idea exchange is discussed in light of these examples.
Water resources data for the 1977 water year in Florida consist of discharge records for 271 streams, stage-only records for 223 streams, elevations for 228 lakes, 66 crest-stage partial records and water level measurements for 828 wells. Water quality data for approximately 680 surface sites and 930 wells are included.
The data in this Volume for Southwest Florida includes discharge records for 93 streams, stage-only records for 24 streams, elevations for 109 lakes, miscellaneous measurements, crest-stage partial records for 14 streams, and water quality data for approximately 315 surface water sites.
These data represent the National Water Data System records collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating local, state and federal agencies in Florida.

An electromagnetic (EM) controlled source survey was made during the period Nov. 30, 1977, to Dec. 13, 1977, in the Randsburg, California, Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA). This report summarizes the observed extra-low-frequency (ELF) data and least squares interpretation using a computer program developed by Anderson (1977). The results are given in tabular form along with observed and calculated amplitude and phase plots. In addition, one vertical electrical sounding (VES) was obtained and a graphical solution is included via a Schlumberger inversion program developed by Zohdy (1973).

More than half the coal reserves of the United States occur west of the Mississippi River; therefore, the program concentrates mostly on coal-producing regions in the Western interior. Additional studies involve the oil-shale region in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, and coal-related work in Alaska and Appalachia. The work is done both by USGS personnel and under USGS grants and contracts through the Energy Lands Program to universities, State Geological Surveys, and private individuals. Maps and reports characterizing many aspects of environmental earth science are being prepared for areas of Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. Types of studies underway include bedrock, surficial, and interpretive geology; engineering geology, geochemistry of surface materials and plants; climatic conditions as they influence rehabilitation potential of mined lands; and feasibility of surface vs. underground mining. investigation, Upper Santa Clara River Basin, California","docAbstract":"Water-quality data are summarized for the upper Santa Clara River basin, California from studies beginning August 1974 through June 1976 and during past monitoring programs. Data were collected for nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic carbon, trace elements, detergents, and pesticide compounds. Because of the limited number of samples, the data are only an estimate of conditions that existed in the basin. Sampling was designed so that samples from each site would represent seasonal variations in discharge. Most constituents were fairly low in concentration near the headwaters at Ravenna and higher below the urban and agricultural area near Saugus. Mean specific conductance in the river ranged from 745 micromhos per centimeter at 25 deg C below the headwaters near Lang to 2,640 micromhos at the Los Angeles-Ventura County line. Results also indicate that discharge was not the single factor controlling the concentration variance for most constituents. Regression analyses indicated a high correlation between specific conductance and most major inorganic chemical constituents, and between specific conductance and discharge.
